I'm not sure whose decision it was, but to send Zafar Gohar and Naseem Shah for media duties at the end of the 3rd day's play after they had combined figures of 58-2-300-0 was a ridiculous decision and one that really smells of cowardice.

Someone from the team management or a senior player should have been sent to face the music instead of two young guys just making their way in international cricket.

Really poor man-management and a total lack of responsibility from the management.

I mentioned this before in a post. Misbah generally comes out to speak to the media only after a good day. Now more than ever Misbah should speak fairly consistently keeping in mind he was the Chief Selector and Head Coach for this series.

Sending younger players to speak to the media, especially after a day where both struggled is really poor management as you mentioned.

I think Rizwan has been good when speaking to the media. Most importantly he makes sense when he speaks.

That said, Misbah needs to front up as does Waqar Younis(On-Leave).

I just came here to write this. It's absolutely disgraceful from the management. Why the hell would you do that, and what must those 2 be feeling

Cowardly , indeed,

I would have sent out Shan Masood to face the media after the day’s play - he speaks very good English, so good that he was a strong contender for captaincy too rumour has it - as clearly a captain able to speak fluent English is more useful to have in the team then his ability to bat or bowl.

Very very poor, I imagine they did that to them as ‘punishment’ and also because they don’t feel accountable. Entitled and cowardly brats, so much for a new look Pakistan etc you have some right pieces of work running the scenes

There are about 6 or 7 coaches with the team that could have come out there and done an interview instead.

Several players could have been interviewed instead, but no, they pick on these 2.

Absolutely ridiculous stuff.

This is awful stuff. After Naseem had been hammered why would you send him out? Totally unfair on him. Why couldn’t Azhar,Misbah, or Rizwan show their face? Cowardly behaviour from the management and senior players.

Make it mandatory for guys earning the big bucks to talk to media. And also take questions in a press conference type setting.

Anyone could have come out, sending those two was very deliberate

Just imagine the confidence killer of a move was this and what kind of assurance these young kids are going to get from this EXTREMELY inept and totally moronic coaching and management team?

How in the world, are Misbah and Waqar going to build a strong character into young players together with helping them with technical skills?

Both Misbah and Waqar totally fail on these two fronts. They have absolutely no idea about it!

I don't think its such a bad thing. These two players are playing international cricket and must be made to face the music so that they can toughen up.

we have seen this before from PCB as well when the same management personnel were involved before as well

no these players will also learn cowardice and how to survive just like the seniors instead of toughening them up

It's cowardice but it's also classic Misbah.

He failed in 5/6 innings in South Africa in 2012-13.

He failed in 8/8 innings in Australia and New Zealand in 2016-17.

It was never his fault. There was always someone else to scapegoat.

We STILL hear that Sami Aslam's career had to end because of his batting in that 2016-17 series.

But consider the actual FACTS:

SAMI ASLAM: 170 runs in 4 Tests, average 21,25
MISBAH-UL-HAQ: 120 runs in 4 Tests, average 15.00

It's never Misbah's fault. Especially when it actually is!

No one has ever said Sami was dropped due to that series and Misbah has never blamed anyone for his own batting failures. Why are you making lies up? Misbah needs to go but you don’t need to personally attack him because he doesn’t select your 11.

Lol Sami Aslam was dropped because he was caught cheating on his diet in his hotel room, enjoying Chicken Karhai in defiance of team management instructions and he never found his way back since

Reminds me of Akshay Kumar’s line in Welcome to Uday Shetty.

“Junaid bhai, yeh kis line main parh gaye hain aap”:ma

So he was dropped due to his own lack of intelligence. Hardly a surprise. I didn’t know this. I have been calling for him to be included before he ran off to USA. But if he was dropped due to this, he deserved to be dropped.

one of the most shameful things ive seen in recent times.

literally just throwing em under the bus hoping the medias kind on em cos they are the most junior members.

no one in pak media will hold management accountable however.

I am assuming it was the punishment for their mediocrity and incompetency. I think it's fair enough. You let the team down, you should face the music. Especially Naseem.

Or his ability to catch.

Doing that to a debutant is pretty ridiculous.

I agree that was actually harsh on my part. I don't think Zafar deserved it and my initial comment was borne out of frustration.

I think Naseem did to an extent but I also think it's getting to the point where we need to be questioning the people that keep selecting Naseem not the boy himself.

That being said, Waqar is a hard task master so I can see him wanting to do this to players he feels let down by.

Looks like the kiddy gloves are off from NZC as well. Look at the thumbnail they used for the video.

But, It is expected. It is Test Cricket. You will be exposed, tested and brutalised at every step.
16 year old Tendulkar was hit on the nose by a brutal bouncer, he was not treated as a kid.
Once you cross that white line, if its 16 year old, 25 year, 40 year it doesn't matter.

So, I would say the PCB and its player management is pretty bad. If it was a minnow team like Zimbabwe or Afghanistan throwing undercooked kids into Test cricket, it is understandable.
Pakistan, with a rich history of 70 years and a fully established and thriving first class structure, is pretty baffling. But, you live and learn.
All that can be done is let these kids play and learn some hard lessons on overseas tours, and hope that they come back better next time.
Remember, Kohli has a horrid first Test tour of England, but he came back strong and did not let that failure define him.
Lets see what these kids do.

Usually they send a senior player or best performing players afaik...So this seems like a punishment, which is quite counterproductive

Lol what a joke is this Management. I mean, how in the world could they hang these out to dry after what has been an absolutely disastrous day for them ever in their life ?

Or maybe the thinking was this was probably the last time they got to play for Pak and deserved a Press Con

I believe it's an indirect punishment for their awful performance. Next time, they will try harder in order to not to face the media.

Might work.

I agree with you. Misbah does not like taking responsibility for his team's bad performances. I guess he is of the opinion that his job is limited to coaching the players, and if he believes that he is doing his job well then it is not his responsibility if the players are not performing according to his plan or their potential.

This tough-love type of approach works for some coaches. However, he could have built some street-cred with his players if he had come out and taken responsibility for their bad performance. And in turn, the players might have given it their level best (and beyond) in the future just so they didn't disappoint their coach.

I wonder what would Immi have done after an equally bad performance when he was captain.

Damm, watching Naseem in that condition in the press conference made me depressed :(

Seriously dude, this is 17 year old kid, who had been thrown into test cricket by team management and now he is treated nothing but like a whipping dog. SHAME PAKISTAN MANAGEMENT SHAME

Naseem deserves this humiliation. He has a big mouth but zero talent. Did he make any big statements this time?

Very harsh on Zafar. Should have sent in hardworking Masood.

That is odd. Why are the senior players not coming out? That's just making a mockery of the whole process which is about understanding what went wrong.

Sometimes you just feel ashamed of being a Pakistani. Honest.

It was one statement man. Have we all not made such stupid statements when we were young? Just look at him in the video - poor guy seems to have been made the scapegoat along with a debutant when almost the entire team and management failed. Shame on Misbah and co.

Scapegoat? He is probably the biggest reason for this humiliation. Why should he be protected when he was the worst player on show?

He should have been there but I do agree that it was a terrible call to send Zafar.

However badly they performed, it was completely unacceptable by team management to throw those 2 newcomers under the bus & make them face the press. As a coach you can criticise them or drop them, but you cant & shouldnt publicly humiliate or demoralize them. Pretty disgusting they did that.

This isnt a kangaroo court.

Idea is not subject players to humiliation

I was shocked to see this video from NZC official channel. Can really smell the cowardice. Zafar and Naseem for media duties, really? How low can the management get? Misbah and Azhar should have come in all honesty. That could have at least increased the respect for them!

Mickey actually came and faced the music many times when Pakistan lost badly and some Ppers made fun of his "We are a proud team ..." Atleast he was man enough stand up for the team. Cant say the same for Misbah .

Cowardly act from Misbah. His man management skills are completely exposed. Mickey was way better in this department too.

Very very poor from the management Throwing newbies under the bus as a form of punishment Im beginning to see some justification in amirs act now if this is how management treats its players

Like other posters have said misbah and co shouldve fronted out and taken total responsibility instead of humiliating the new lads

I'm so thankful you are on this forum.

Pathetic stuff from team management and add to that we will probably see they two players sent out to do interviews being dropped from the team.

I have been pointing this out since the England series - Misbah and Younus only show up when the team has done reasonably well - like let's say at the end of the 3rd T20.

But I was expecting better of Rizwan.

All in all, a team in disarray, lacking confidence, hiding from the world and generally a culture of blame pervading.

The worst Pakistan team I have seen in 4 decades, not because it lacks ability, but because it punches far far below its weight due to other reasons.

I don't think its such a bad thing. These two players are playing international cricket and must be made to face the music so that they can toughen up.

May as well have sent the masseur today then after the match ended.

Very true.

I have sat in press conferences where Mickey Arthur faced the music after some terrible performances.

I wonder if this was the last straw for the PCB as far as Misbah was concerned.

Did Zafar & Naseem loose a bet? that they were sent to face the media. this was Zafar 's Debut and Naseem is like the youngest playerer from either side.

If the rumors of Misbah getting sacked are true, then this news must have reached Misbah before it got leaked to the media. No wonder he sent Naseem out there.

Misbah is basically getting sacked because of the rubbish bowling of Naseem.

PCB expected Pakistan to lose in NZ, but the manner in which they did, especially with the way Naseem was humiliated after PCB put all eggs in his basket and hyped
him to the moon and back, have forced PCB to reconsider Misbah’s position.

Misbah must be hating Naseem like the devil right now. He will never forgive him. However, it is hard to explain why Zafar was sent.

I have it on good authority that PCB hierarchy is fuming about this and want answers from Misbah and co.

The only "reason" they were sent is because if Misbah or Waqar went, the media would grill them extensively.

If they sent someone established or Rizwan, again the media would ask tough questions.

What can you ask a "freshie" like Gohar or "16 year old child" about Pakistan's performance.

And I think it worked.

No tough questions.

Lol, Misbah thought he was indispensable wasn't he being given such unparralled powers in Pakistan Cricket in 2019 i.e. the team's head coach, batting coach, chief selector, allowed to retain his Sui Gas high paying job, allowed to coach in the PSL. Lol, its all come crashing down for him.

The PCB were unhappy with the manner Pakistan lost that first test against England, then Misbah shot himself on the foot by approaching the PM to complain about the changes in the domestic structure behind PCB's back, the PCB take away his chief selector position, his batting coach position, told him that he had to choose between the PCB or Sui Gas, take away his PSL coaching position and lol now they are removing him for good.

Unlike past chairman's WK is not going to keep Misbah on perpetually without results

I'm stunned with them sending Zafar more than Naseem.

Zafar just had a horrible debut match and is likely terrified about his future as an international cricketer. You then send him into the lion's den when his mind is likely not even in the right place.

That's messed up.

Naseem is young but still has a few matches, press conferences, and positive performances under his belt. Doesn't make it right, but sending Zafar was just cruel and humiliating.

Zafar to his credit spoke fluently and handled it well

misbah once said a word to UA for not taking the 2nd run, today the same words for him for not taking the presser and sending these kids... zafar handled it well... i personally feel he was thrown under the bus by mngmnt for debuting him on that pitch....

I have lost all respect for Misbah. During his captaincy days, i considered him to be a limited, but gritty and honest man who took a team from the depth of the lowest moments to number 1 ranking in the world, with grit and respect. Agreed he had tough overseas tour, but more or less every team struggles overseas.

But, he has turned out to be cunning and dishonest.

Guys like Mansoor Rana, Shahid Aslam, Younis Khan or Misbah-ul-Haq should have been the ones sent for the press conference.

This just shows that they are cowards of the highest order. The PCB really needs to do something about this.

I'd sack Misbah and co on this behaviour alone let alone their inability to select, coach and manage the team.

Apparently this was the straw that broke the camels back as far as the PCB was concerned

Question really is - who decides which player goes for the presser? I am sure the Team Manager and the Media people decide this.

I wish the camel's back would have broken much sooner or the camel was never born in the first place. I love the changes Wasim khan has brought to domestic cricket but hiring Misbah as a coach just cannot be condoned. I respect the fact that he was able to win a few matches in UAE but I've always been so uninspired by Misbah. However, hiring Misbah may not have been his decision and I'm so glad that the that they are thinking of moving him out. I hope that it happens for everyone's sake including his.

I would expect it would be the Head Coach and the Team Manager who decide it.

This was really low from Misbah and co. This alone is enough of a reason to sack him.

One of several unprofessional things over the last few months which the PCB is not happy with.

I'm actually glad to hear this. Shows to me that the PCB is observant and unwilling to look past things that many people would consider insignificant.

It should be mandatory for the captain and the head coach to attend pressers. The idea of them sending others players in their stead should not be an option.

Others players can accompany them but the captain and the head coach have to be there.
