Quotes from TV discussion regarding 92 World Cup

Imran Khan

"Our team in 87 was the strongest and we were favourites in those conditions."

"Before 92 WC, we lost Saeed Anwar and Waqar Younis which was a huge blow as they were two match winners."

"Australian conditions were completely different from Pak conditions and a lot of our players were unfamiliar with the conditions so we went to Aus early so that players could gets accustomed to the conditions."

"Nowadays in ODI cricket, captains look to attack and get wickets to stop runs. Back then, they would look to contain."

"I have always believed that leg-spinners are wicket taking bowlers so my strategy was to take wickets to stop the runs rather than defend and try to stop the runs."

"When I joined Pak team as an 18 year old, I asked Asif Masood and Sarfraz Nawaz what training to do. They told me to do one round of the ground... I was thinking 'what?'"

"When I was training, they used to say 'what are you doing, you'll get tired' and when I was doing weight training, they'd tell me I'd become stiff."

"Our training happened in County cricket and it was still developing at the time and improved after Kerry Packer cricket. Nowadays fitness standards are much improved."

"I remembering when I was young we went on a tour of WI. Asif Masood was standing at fine leg and Viv Richards and Gordon Greenidge were batting, we were getting thrashed. Whenever they hit the ball 5 yards wide of Asif Masood, it would go for a four and he'd try to stop it with his foot. At lunch I asked the captain why he isn't fielding so he said "don't you know the fast bowler is resting at fine-leg?"

"When you think in your mind that you've lost the match, it becomes difficult to avoid defeat. When you think "I won't lose" and understand that philosophy, you can capture the art of winning."

"The team doesn't look at how well a captain is talking but his body language should show that he believes what he's saying."

"1986 onwards we used to win very difficult matches. Once during 89, a reporter asked me about Kashmir and I was taken aback. I said there's so much poverty in the 2 countries so there's no need to use weapons - instead we should make a decision in Sharjah. I wasn't serious but that in the headlines next day. We played so badly during the match and got out for around 140 but India couldn't even chase that."

"There were 2 new balls being used at the time and Inzamam was at 3 and he wasn't faring well at the time so I promoted myself to face the moving ball."

"I have rarely seen such a critical innings as the one Inzi played against NZ in that situation."

"Javed Miandad's biggest quality was that he would play according to the situation. He was a fighter. At critical times, he was a dependable batsman."

"Javed Miandad's two centuries in West Indies were amazing. Their team was so strong and the fight we gave in that series was the best fight."

"Javed Miandad and I batted slowly in 92 World Cup final to stop us collapsing like we did in the 99 World Cup final"

"Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's qawalis became a motivation for us in the 1992 World Cup especially Allah Hoo"

"a selector resigned & argued with me and said that why had I picked a safarshii like Inzamam-ul-Haq in the 92 World Cup"

"back in 92 I had no idea what to say when asked to do the speech after winning. Nowadays I have more practice in doing speeches"

"I always supported my players, but what made me angry were those players who never gave 100% effort & didn't work hard"

"We made Pakistanis all over the world, whether in Pakistan, England, USA or anywhere else, happy after the 92 WC win"

Wasim Akram

"I remember we lost all the practice matches before 92 WC. One of them was against a team of 40-year-olds."

"We came back from practice on a tour in 88 and Imran bhai went for a shower so Mudi pa (Mudassar Nazar) said to order a burger. I said "Imran bhai aa jayenge" so he said "nahi". So I ordered it and we were just about to start eating and then Imran bhai came and had it taken away."

"Imran bhai would try to give us confidence, even by saying something small that would touch the heart."

"it took us 6 hours from airport in Lahore to get to PC hotel when we landed in Pakistan after winning 92 World Cup"

"I had many great moments in my cricket career but nothing ever went close to winning the 1992 World Cup final"

Mushtaq Ahmed

"Imran bhai's leadership and encouragement helps us to this day in our careers"

"Once in Brisbane I was hit for many runs so I just said to Wasim bhai that I thought I bowled well and was just unlucky. During lunch, he was grinning at me and I felt that this might be my last match and I'd be dropped for another spinner. Imran bhai came and put his arm on my shoulder and said that I really was unlucky and could've taken 5 wickets."

"At the 1992 World Cup, Imran Khan encouraged us to wear our national clothes and be proud that we were Pakistani"

Moin Khan

"Keeping at the World Cup was enjoyable as the bounce was good in comparison to low bounce in Pakistan. The ball would hit the gloves hard"

"Imran Khan never talked bad about his players to the media. What was said in dressing room stayed in the dressing room"

Inzamam-ul-Haq

"Whenever I got out, Imran bhai said don't worry. I got out on 5 against NZ after hitting a four though we won the match. I was waiting to take a shower and a senior player said such things to me that when I went in, I was crying in the shower. Next day when I got my boarding pass, I saw I was sitting next to Imran bhai. I thought 'when problems come, they come from all four sides'. Imran bhai said 'you hit such a great boundary yesterday, I thought your form has come back'. He said this and went to sleep. It was such a confidence booster for me that he still trusted me so much."

"On the day of the match against NZ, I was feeling sick so I ended up telling Imran bhai I don't think I can play. He said that no matter what, I would play the match. When he got out, it was my turn to bat - on my way to the middle, he said to play my natural game. But when I got to the middle, Javed bhai said "don't hit big shots". That day the ball came onto my bat well and I played a good knock but got out at a crucial time so I was apprehensive. Imran bhai embraced me and said 'you played very well'."

Amazing memories these!

The 1992 bat slow and go to the end with wickets in hand strategy was fine as long as you had the likes of Imran and Javed.

I remember it like it was yesterday. We were one of the family families to have Sky in our town and the house was full during Ramadan.

Great to watch that show.

I felt Ramiz spoilt it a bit with his childish antics and constant interrupting.

Finals are great tests of nerves. Teams making to the finals are always in great form but the one with stronger leader , win it generally.

IK opted to bat at one down in 1992 WC final to take the pressure himself. Our 1999 side was the all time best but Wasim Akram was no match to IK in leadership and mental strength.

Steve Waugh, Dhoni, Ranatunga, and other WC winners were all exceptionally mentally strong individuals.

The tactics he used wer great for 1992

The problem is our ODI teams have been replicating or trying to replicate those strategies ever since

Cricket has moved on

Imran was a great thinker of the game. It was an amazing achievement to win the World Cup. Even more so without Waqar and Anwar.

The 92 team although weren't in great form but had proven match-winners, X factor and players who used their brain and played according to the situation and the team's requirements.

Nowadays we have players who even in great form lack intelligence and mental strength.

Amazing to think that we've regressed so terribly as a one-day side 25 years on from our greatest LOI triumph.

So we celebrate a great moment and our friends get pained by who led it. If you dont want to celebrate, well just stay away from the thread.

It pains them because a certain person was captain. If anybody else was captain these same hawkeye bullseye types would be bumping every possible thread about the 92 WC.

For those of us that stayed up the nights and lived every moment, its the greatest sporting moment in our lives. If it pains the serfs because good honest leadership bought the success , well tough.
