Pakistan leg-spinner Yasir Shah grabbed the key wicket of Dinesh Chandimal to leave Sri Lanka fighting to avoid defeat after the fourth day of the first Test in Abu Dhabi on Sunday.

The prolific wicket-taker took 2-25 as Sri Lanka struggled to 69-4, needing a rearguard action to save the Test.

Pakistan will be expecting to push for victory in the opening match of a two-Test series on the fifth and final day.

It was tough to negotiate spin on a fourth-day Sheikh Zayed Stadium pitch, but despite a 32nd Test five-wicket haul for veteran Sri Lankan spinner Rangana Herath, Pakistan posted 422 to take a slender three-run lead.

Sri Lanka had made 419 in their first innings.

At the close, Kusal Mendis was batting on 16, with nightwatchman Suranga Lakmal on two, after a day of fluctuating fortunes.

Herath's 5-93 in 40 overs were well foiled by a brilliant 76 by Test debutant Haris Sohail, as initially it looked as though Sri Lanka would take a first-innings lead.

Pakistan then hit back in the second innings through Shah, who first had opener Dimuth Karunaratne caught for 10 and then dismissed first-innings centurion Chandimal, caught at slip, for seven.

Sohail followed his responsible knock by claiming Kaushal Silva's wicket, whom he trapped leg before for 25, while part-timer Asad Shafiq had Lahiru Thirimanne for seven.

Earlier in the day, Pakistan too were struggling at 316-6 and were in danger of conceding a healthy lead with Herath using all his experience and guile.

The 39-year-old left-arm spinner, who now has 394 wickets in 84 Tests, gave his team the much-needed wicket of a resolute Azhar Ali, luring him into an uppish drive which was brilliantly caught at short mid-wicket by a diving Mendis.

Azhar's defiant knock of 85 lasted more than five hours and included four boundaries, but with his dismissal Pakistan's hopes of building a lead looked slim.

But Sohail had other ideas as he added an invaluable 50 for the ninth wicket with tail-ender Hasan Ali to lift Pakistan from 340-8.

Sohail hit seven fours and two sixes before holing out to paceman Nuwan Pradeep, who finished with 2-77. Hasan's whirlwind 25-ball 29 featured three sixes and two fours.

The second and final Test — a day-night affair — will be played in Dubai from October 6.

Its likely to be a draw . Unless Pakistan produce something special and get through rest of lanka wickets for another 50 - 60 runs

I would not rule it out. They've already lost Chandimal. They still have Dickwella and Mendis. It would have been nice to get Lakmal out quickly so they were reeling with 5 wickets down going into the final day.

The final day will be tricky if the ball is turning as much as it is turning now, but they can afford to go at 2 RPO if it marches them to the victory.

The way Sri Lanka has batted in the 2nd inning, it will be surprising if they are not all out within 110 Max. Match should be over by tea .Yasir will take another 5 fer within an hour of play tomorrow

Sri Lanka are in Trouble.

Imagine if Pak were in this position the knives would be out and the wrist slitting all over the place.

Sri Lanka can def be bundled under 150 if the right bowling combination along with attacking field settings are set in place.

A fairly lacklustre Test so far could turn into a thriller. Let's hope so.

One point I want to make is how Sarfraz uses the part timers. Misbah just seemed to use them to rest the main bowlers whilst Sarfraz is giving them confidence and also he is using them as he is trying to try different things.

Has anyone considered the possibility of Sri Lanka getting a 150 run lead and then bowling out Pakistan for 87, with Rangana Herath taking 6 wickets?

This Test match could turn out to be a similar battle of Karachi Test 2000, when Moin Khan's coward players were at the receving end. This time ball is in other court. Pakistan will be chasing something 175 in 50 overs.

If we had another proper spinner, the deal would be sealed. But mickey has made a huge goofy here playing so much pace.

Azhar Ali has come a very long way. Still is limited, but his grit and patience has gotten him to be a very good test player. He is only moving closer and close to a 50 average, whereas his "all shots in the book" partner has seen his average dwindle year after year. Shafiq is in the high thirties now and is no longer protected by Misbah and YK.

Hmm good observation

But it's really a Plan C type of situation and ideally we shouldn't have to come to it

We made a selection blunder by not including Bilal or Asghar. But credit to Sarfraz for giving confidence and for trusting Shafiq and Harris.

Yep that's true but I am also surprised as to why Azhar hasn't bowled he's probably the best part timer we have. Should roll an arm tomorrow.

He's got a dodgy knee. Playing this game only after taking injections.

Need to knock over Mendis quickly tomorrow, he has a habit of producing big knocks in such situations.

He was batting for a long period and was only just cleared to play the game. It's not necessary to risk him.
