In this list I am ranking in order of merit the combination of 2 greatest cricketers ever who played together in a team .

1.Don Bradman-Keith Miller

The greatest batsmen ever with the best ever match-winner as an allrounder.Best of match-winners .

2.Gary Sobers -Rohan Kanhai

Sobers took al-round cricketing skill to depths never traversed or in metaphysical regions while Kanhai took batting art or skill to regions of divinty.Tow of cricket's greatest geniuses.

3.Viv Richards-Malcolm Marshall

Viv was the most intimidating batsmen who took domination to region s of the sublime while Marshall virtually took the art of fast bowling to regions unexplored .Viv dessicrated all bowling attacks while the best of batsmen could not cope with Marshall's skidding bounce or banana swing.

4.Barry Richards-Mike Procter

Hardly played at international level but morally in terms of skill the ultimate combination.Barry was the ultimate epitome of batting perfection while Procter took al-round skill to supreme heights.

5.Javed Miandad-Imran Khan

Javed was the ultimate bating connoiseur in a crisis with great ability to improvise or execute uncanny strokes .Imran was arguably the best all-rounder of his era or even amongst the top 3 all-rounders of al time in addition to being a great captain.

6.Jacques Kallis-Dale Steyn

Statistically the greatest all-rounder ever with the top 3 statistically best fast bowlers of al time.Steyn had supreme agression to back his great speed and diversity. In a total cricketing package in terms of skill Kallis would well make the top 5 of all cricketers.

7.Ricky Ponting-Shane Warne

2 of cricket's ultimate match-winners.Warne re-defined the role of a leg spinner with supreme skil while Ponting was statistically a giant of his era, overshadowing even Lara and Tendulkar.

8.Greg Chappell-Dennis Lillee

Both were simply the ultimate epitome of cricketing perfection.Greg was technically perfect and could tear any bowling attack, while Lillee posessed every component of a perfect fast bowler be it action, speed control, accuracy or movement.

9.Brian Lara-Curtly Ambrose

Lara took batting artistry to metaphysical proportions while Ambrose on his day was more devastating than any pacemen on a broken wicket or in a 4th innings. Both could single-handedly win games.

10.Inzamam Ul Haq-Wasim Akram

Inzy was arguably the best player of pace in his time with great flamboyance.Wasim took fast bowling art or wizardry to regions never traversed resembling a magician .Inzy was the best match-winner of his day while Wasim was the most lethal of bowlers.

11.Steve Waugh-Glen Mcgrath

2 of coolest and most calculating cricketers .No pacemen ever was more intelligent or posessed more control or ability to judge an opponent's weaknesses as Mcgrath. In a crisis Steve was the most effective batsmen in his time, particularly on bad wickets with greater mental tenacity than Sachin or Lara.

12.Sunil Gavaskar-Kapil Dev

Both truly great crusaders with completely contrasting styles.Gavaskar was the ultimate epitome of technical perfection, concentration and determination and the ultimate one to bat for your life.Kapil was amongst the most flamboyant batsmen and most effective or impactful fast-medium pace bowlers of all time.

Sangakkara and Muralitharan.

Kohli and Rohit (ODIs).

Op forgot about virat and Sachin. They did play together for a short period of time

Viv Richards and Malcolm Marshall - the best batsman of his era and the best fast bowler of his era in peak form playing in the same team is hard to beat. I was actually thinking if I should use the word arguably for both these gentlemen but decided against it. That itself says something.

Not quite as glamorous and recognised as those two , but two batsmen who I often thought when they batted together and all their teams hopes were on their shoulders , they raised their game and delivered time and again , showing guts and courage but also pride in representing their country - Arjuna Ranatunga and Aravinda De Silva.

Styn-Kallis

Holding-Roberts-Marshal-Viv-Gorden

Liilie-Chappel Brothers-

McGrath - Warna- Ponting - Gilly

Wasim Waqar

Broad-Anderson

Sanga-Murli-Mahela

Sachin - Dravid - Kumble

If it’s a batsman-bowler pair, I don’t think Sobers-Kanhai should come in top 10. In fact, even during their time probably Lindwall-Harvey, Fazal-Hanif, Truman-Dexter might come ahead.

My pairing will be

1. Viv - Marshall
2. Lillee - Greg
3. Bradman - O’Reiley
4/5. McGrath/Warne - Ponting
6. Imran - Javed

Rest are too close to call - some missing pairs in OP are
Lindwall - Hervey
Hammond - Larwood
Bradman - Miller
Miller - Hervey/Hasset
Lloyd-Roberts
Wasim-Saeed
Tendulkar- Kumble
Murali - Sanga
Syd Barnes - Jack Hobbs
KP - Anderson
Wes Hall - Kanhai/Sobers
Snow - Boycott ..

Kallis/ABDV-Steyn is scary good !!!! Best I have seen live, this combo could team up to win matches in Australia, England, SC.

Either that or Viv/Marshall will be my top pick.

Maybe in 2025 we will be talking about Smith-Cummins and Kohli-Bumrah in the same breath, former can be the GOAT test duo and latter the GOAT all format duo.

Statistically Cook-Anderson and Kohli/Pujara-Ashwin/Jadeja are very good but not in all conditions.

McGrath Warne hands down.

If you want a batter and a bowler, Viv and Marshall takes it.

Two batters?? Dravid- Tendulkar it will be for me.

I really believe the pairing of Rohit and Kohli can give anyone a run for their money. These two are just run machines.

10.Inzamam Ul Haq-Wasim Akram

Inzy was arguably the best player of pace in his time with great flamboyance.Wasim took fast bowling art or wizardry to regions never traversed resembling a magician .Inzy was the best match-winner of his day while Wasim was the most lethal of bowlers.
.

Inzi averaged 30 in Australia and SA the two places where pace bowling dominates. He was no where near the best at playing pace in his era, not even close.

Rule: have to have played together for at least 5 years, test cricket:
1. Bradman and McCabe
2. Viv and Marshall
3. Hobbs and Barnes
4. Warne and McGrath
5. G. Chappell and Lillee
6. Steyn and Kallis
7. Javed and Imran
8. Lara and Ambrose
9. Sachin and Dravid
10. Wasim and Waqar

Great record against West Indies which still had a strong attack and when at his best in South Africa.Read what Alan Donald felt about bowing to Inzy.

Imran and Wasim
Imran and Qadir
Cummins and Steve Smith
Hadlee and Crowe
Lara and Ambrose
Gavaskar and Kapil
Botham and Willis

Aginst SA 23 innings, 0 hundreds, ave 32

Not even close to being the best against pace.

Sanga and Murli almost there Not Kohli and Rohit in my view.Like my list and order?

The rest is good, but it is unfair to mention Inzamam and Wasim but ignore Sangakkara and Muralitharan.

Wasim and Muralitharan were roughly equal but Sangakkara was a superior batsman than Inzamam.

Ponting- warne
McGrath- warne
Ponting- McGrath
Sachin- dravid
Viv- Marshall
Lara- Ambrose
Kallis- Steyn
Sachin- kumble
Imran- javed

Greg Chappell-Lillee

Wasim Akram-Imran Khan

Tendulkar-Kapil Dev

Gavaskar-Kapil Dev

Viv-Richards-Marshall

Donald-Pollock

Hafeez and Malik might be at the batting crease together in the near future , don’t forget these two proven performers at the highest level with careers spanning two decades.

Am sure they will be leading pakistan to glory in the 2023 ODI world cup

Indeed, that’s the only reason I’m still following Pakistan cricket after all these years because I’m waiting for that to happen too, but yes let’s stay positive if not 2023 then definitely Hafeez and Malik will deliver in the 2027 World Cup and be asked to come out of retirement by PM Bilawal Butto just in time for the 2031 World Cup to do it all again..

The backbone of many a Pakistan rearguard.

The men to turn to when the going gets tough, the bowling is hostile and the pitch a tricky one.

Abdv and Kohli at RCB. Can't get better than that.

It is baffling how RCB are yet to win the IPL. 2016 was certainly their best chance.

Anyway, it is a spectacle two watch them batting together in full flow. It is limited overs batting at its absolute best.

On a serious note,

Mahela-Sanga
Inzimam-Yousuf
Flintoff-Pietersen
Pietersen-Swann
Kane W- Ross Taylor
Sachin-Dhoni

Thought you didn't like javelin throwers.

Thought you didn't like javelin throwers.

There is a difference between him and Ajmal. Ajmal lied about having a deformity, while Muralitharan’s case was genuine.

It gave him a considerable advantage over other spinners (which is why I consider Warne to be better), but you cannot argue with 1,300 international wickets.

Yes indeed , I have some really fond memories of their 280 run partnership on a bouncy Johannesburg wicket some years back in the 2nd innings of a test match , against Dale Steyn and Morkel at their peak - if I remember correctly they rescued Pakistan from 30-4 and saved the test. Legends.

Can anyone recall any other famous match saving or match winning test innings from these legendary batting duo?

Few batsman can boast of a match-saving (and also series-saving) 148 not out against a rampant Muralitharan on a day 5 Colombo wicket.

One was past it and the other not in his groove

I thought the thread is about past/present greats who played along side each other (didnt realize if OP asked if they were already in Great form or past their form)?

Fine list .any order?

3) Greg Chappell-Lillee
4) Wasim Akram-Imran Khan
5) Gavaskar-Kapil Dev
6) Steve Waugh-Border

Lol. If you are doubling up why not Chappell Border as well. Also Marshall-Ambrose, Viv-Ambrose. Dev was not that good, averaged like 30 or something with both bat and ball. Pollock >>> Dev, so where is Pollock-Kallis (and Donald-Kallis, and Steyn-Kallis). I might not agree with the rest of the list, but Dev is nowhere near the caliber of the rest of the players. The top Indian one should be Sachin and Dravid, or Sachin and Kohli.

Bradman and O'Reilly win easily though

Very good list.Respect for Kapil Dev which is praiseworthy. Why not Marshal-Viv at top instead of Warne-Mcgrath?
