Faisal Hussain Awan and Ahsan Khursheed were initially suspected of being involved in the September 2016 attack at 12 Infantry Brigade Headquarters at Uri in north Kashmir which left 19 Army soldiers dead.

Two days after their release by National Investigation Agency (NIA), the two boys from Pakistan Administered Kashmir (PaK) were handed over to Pakistan Army on Friday.

The boys were handed over Pakistan Army Friday morning by their Indian counter parts at the Wagah-Attari border. Besides, Pakistan Army, the boys were received by their families. Pertinently, three days after the Uri attack, Army nabbed Faisal Hussain Awan and Ahsan Khursheed, two school friends for allegedly guiding the militants to the Army base.

The Army had said the duo was working for the Pakistan based Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) and guiding militants to cross the Line of Control (LoC). They were first caught by a patrol team of the paramilitary Border Security Force (BSF) at a village near Uri and then handed over to the Army.
Khursheed hails from Khaliana Kalan and Awan from Pottha Jahangir. The villages are close to the LoC near PaK.

The investigations into attack were taken over by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Both the boys were handed over to them. However, NIA in their findings said that Faisal Hussain Awan and Ahsan Khursheed, the two suspects who were arrested in connection with the attack at Uri Brigade Headquarters on 18th September 2016, have been released and handed over to the Army 16 Corps Headquarters on Wednesday. “They are not involved in the attack and have been set free,” a senior NIA official told Greater Kashmir.

The decision to release these two boys is said to be a goodwill gesture as Pakistan last Saturday had released two Indian boys.A month ago, Pakistan handed over a mentally deranged Bengali woman to Army and Police in Uri Sector of Baramulla district.

The last line is the most important part of the entire narrative:

So had we not released the latter two individuals previously, after deeming them "innocent" India would've continued to hold two genuinely innocent boys torn away from their family and loved ones ??? What a shame :(

This seemed more like a trade off where we had to let go of genuine mischief makers just to bring back reunite a torn family. Could be costly but I'd say it was worth the risk..

Seems like there is a never ending supply of prisoners to be released as a goodwill gesture. Like the white doves which are bred so that politicians can have a photo op by releasing them.

The goodwill gesture part irked me. Why should it be called a goodwill gesture when they are innocent? It's their right to walk free but i guess it's about being that part of the world.

All this is coming from someone who supports Afgans being shot at sight for crossing border?? :))

It indeed is a goodwill gesture irrespective of which side it comes from. Crossing border illegaly is a serious offence, and to do this in the most terror-affected region is almost suicidal.

I know what you're saying but There are people who unknowingly cross the border. These two boys were school boys as well. Nevertheless, like i said it's about being from that part of the world.
