20 men have been arrested in two separate regions of India for celebrating Pakistan's epic Champions Trophy victory against India, Indian media has reported.

Five men were arrested in India's Bikaner district for celebrating Pakistan's triumph, India Today reported.

Imran, Sanjay Khan, Tanveer, Shoaib and Wasim were celebrating Pakistan's victory by "dancing on the beats of dhol and chanting slogans in Pakistan's favour", according to the report.

Police took action on the complaint of right-wing organisation Vishwa Hindu Parishad, which demanded stern action against the individuals. A first information report of the incident has been registered.

"They have been arrested for disturbing peace. They were shouting slogans in favour of Pakistan." the station hose office (SHO) of the area said.

In a separate incident in Madhya Pradesh, 15 Muslims were arrested Monday and charged with sedition, Hindustan Times reported. The arrests were made following complaints by an individual for cracking firecrackers and chanting slogans in Pakistan's favour.

India is finding it difficult to recover from the shock defeat against a much lower-ranked Pakistan side which was followed by protests in the country.

Earlier, reports of celebrations in India-held Kashmir (IHK) had caused anger in India. Indian media outlets had reported 'widespread celebrations' in IHK following Pakistan's Champions Trophy victory against India.

Hurriyat leaders, especially Mirwaiz Umar Farooq had come under criticism for congratulating Pakistan on the win. "Fireworks all around, feels like an early Eid here. Better team took the day. Congratulations team #Pakistan," Farooq had tweeted.

There will always be Muslims who subscribe to Ummah more than the country they live in.

They will all be released after a day or two anyways. India has bigger problems to worry about than some celebrating the victory of Pak in a cricket match.

So why arrest them in the first place? Go attend to those bigger problems and leave trivial stuff for ordinary public to get on with.

Why then do we have plenty of Indian "Hindu" and "Seikh" Friends here in London celebrating Pakistan's win together with fans of pakistan?

This statement is a paradox. Indians are EVERYTHING in the whole, wide world but one thing they are not is party animals.

Didn't know there was a thread on this already, mods. This being the case the Indian government should imprison the entire IoK valley for cheering on Pak. Why the distinction?

It's punishable for life in prison??? Keep supporting us Kashmiris, but be SAFE... it is sad how indians get so aggressive and idiotic over a sport..

Arrested and possible life in prison for supporting someone in a cricket match?

what idiots.

dont understand why these idiots think that supporting some other country in sports is an act of treason.

Just let them go, creating more problems over sports is the last thing India needs.

So much for a democratic country!! Why can't we support another country!! Disgusting!! Difficult to express feelings!!Hard to live!!

Man physically abused after celebrating Pakistan in India.

From what was reported in news channel here it said the 15 people arrested were due to a complaint filed by some guy.. In the complaint filed it said they were shouting anti India slogans and pro Pakistan slogans.. Anti India slogans = sedition which can result in a harsh punishment..

It's somewhat like your blasphemy law where anyone can accuse a minority for blasphemy without much proof.. Same here they got accused for sedition..

As per the law supporting Pakistan in a cricket match won't get them in any trouble but if sedition charges are levelled then it might be a serious problem..

That country is not Australia or NZ or SA. It is Pak which is in a cold war with India over Kashmir. An enemy state.

My friend used to openly support Australia even when India played. No one cared. But if he supported Pak, definitely he would have been roughed up and a police complaint would have been made.

Does law allow a complaint against someone for supporting any other country in a sports match? I would assume the law is only for when someone says anything anti India which is sedition and should be dealt with???

It's not about the law it's about how it is implemented.. People in power can use it against anyone and twist and bend it for their own convenience.. But yes I guess if Gandhi was against this law he knew it will be mis used by the public in future..

Its in the nature of the law. Can be misused easily. U cant prove that someone used anti national words or blasphemic worda unless you get it on tape and the footage is checked in a lab. Unfortunately in most cases , word of the witness is taken to be enough. The law Should be scrapped.

These laws are fine in an ideal society where no one is corrupt and are genuinely concerned about their country..

Should be, could be, would be.. all hyperboles nothing happens, unless there is a massive case where the law was proven to have been misused no one would even bother raising voice to get it scrapped.. So it's here to stay and will stay..

Every Goddamn law from the British era has been misused by Indians :)))

Right from our freedom of expression laws to section 377 !

Thats how ugly the law is. You cant prove an accusation as true and you cant disprove it either.

Should be scrapped doesnt mean it will be. Just imo it has no place in modern states.

Amnesty International: fans arrested in India for cheering Pakistan win ‘must be freed’

Nineteen cricket fans arrested in India for celebrating Pakistan’s win against India in the Champions Trophy “should be released immediately”, according to Amnesty International.

On Monday police in Madhya Pradesh arrested 15 people in Burhanpur for allegedly committing “sedition” by shouting “pro-Pakistan” and “anti-India” slogans. Four more cricket fans were arrested in Karnataka allegedly for celebrating Pakistan’s 180-run win.

The 19 men were accused of spreading “communal disharmony” which is considered sedition and is punishable by life imprisonment.

“These arrests are patently absurd, and the 19 men should be released immediately,” said Amnesty International’s India programme director, Asmita Basu. “Even if the arrested men had supported Pakistan, as the police claim, that is not a crime. Supporting a sporting team is a matter of individual choice, and arresting someone for cheering a rival team clearly violates their right to freedom of expression.”

According to Amnesty International, the initial report by Madhya Pradesh police states: “[The accused] chanted ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ in support of the Pakistan cricket team … They celebrated Pakistan’s win by bursting crackers and distributing sweets … Their actions suggested that they were trying to conspire against the Indian government by supporting Pakistan in the cricket match … Because of them, there is an atmosphere of unrest in the village.”

India Today, however, reported that police were not concerned by which team the men supported but by the pro-Pakistan and anti-India slogans. But the local police chief, Raja Ram Parihar, told the AFP news agency the men were arrested after “a complaint from a local Hindu man who accused them of celebrating after India lost the match”.

Indian law defines sedition as any act or attempt “to bring into hatred or contempt, or … excite disaffection towards the government.”

Asmita Basu said: “These cases show just why the sedition law should be immediately repealed. This law is excessively broad and vague and makes it easy to silence people who are legitimately exercising their right to freedom of expression. Nobody should have to go to prison merely because they are accused of causing offense. The sedition law has no place in a rights-respecting society, let alone one that has a proud tradition of pluralism and debate.”

J-K lawyer showcaused by Bar for Facebook post hailing Pakistan cricket victory

The Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association has served a showcause notice to a young lawyer over a Facebook post in which he described Pakistan’s victory against India in Sunday’s Champions Trophy final as the “real surgical strike’’.

Stating that the post “reflects your anti-national mindset’’, the notice served on Altaf Hussain Janjua asked him to explain why he should not be expelled from primary membership of the Bar Association. The notice was served by the Association’s general secretary Prem K Sadotra.

“Pakistan’s score: 338; India’s: 158. This is the real surgical strike,’’ Janjua wrote on Facebook soon after India’s defeat. Following criticism from some people, he deleted the post the next evening. Janjua received the showcause notice on June 20.

“That after the conclusion of India vs Pakistan cricket match held on June 18, you have posted a post on Facebook which reflects your anti-national mindset,’’ reads the notice. “The meaning of your post is detrimental to the interest of the J&K High Court Bar Association, Jammu…members of the Association have shown resentment against your post.”

“I had written it in a lighter vein,’’ said Janjua, who hails from the Poonch district. He alleged that some fellow lawyers had sent him threat messages. He said he will reply to the notice, explaining his position. He said he will also write to Chief Justice of the High Court about the threat messages.

Sadotra said, “By describing Pakistan’s victory as the real surgical strike, he was, in fact, hinting that India’s surgical strike on terror launchpads in PoK was fake. In the name of freedom of speech, we will not tolerate anything against the country.”

Kerala youth did burst crackers but it was not to celebrate Pakistan’s victory, says panchayat head

On Tuesday, two days after Pakistan defeated India in the Champions League final, residents of Kumbadaje, a sleepy village in Kerala’s Kasargod district woke up to the news that the police had filed cases against 23 young men for allegedly celebrating Pakistan’s win.

The men were charged with unlawful assembly, rioting, intent to cause riot and under the section relating to “negligent conduct with respect to explosive substance”.

But unlike in Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka – where 21 people were arrested for sedition for allegedly shouting “pro-Pakistan” and “anti-India” slogans and bursting crackers after match – the Kerala police have not yet made any arrests.

Sub Inspector Ambadi of Badiyadka police station said cases have been registered against Razak Chakkula, Mashood and Siraj and 20 other “unknown persons” based on the complaint filed by a local Bharatiya Janata Party official named Rajesh Shetty.

He said the police are now trying to ascertain the veracity of the complaint. “There is no eyewitness to the incident,” Ambadi said. “It is not clear whether the crackers were burst to celebrate Pakistan’s victory or for some other purpose. Moreover, no one heard slogan shouting.”

However, Shetty claimed he had witnessed the celebrations. “I was returning home when I saw a group of people bursting crackers,” he said. “I do not follow cricket, so I didn’t know the reason for their celebration. After reaching home, I realised that they were celebrating Pakistan’s cricket victory. They were shouted anti-India slogans.”

Asked why he did not inform the police then, he claimed he did not know what was going on. “That is why I filed the complaint on Monday,” he explained.

Kumbadaje gram panchayat is home to 12,545 people, mostly Hindus and Muslims. The panchayat is ruled by the United Democratic Front, a multi-party coalition led by the Congress and the Indian Union Muslim League that won seven of the 13 wards in the last election in 2015. The BJP won the other six wards. Fathimath Suhara of the Indian Union Muslim League
is president of the grama panchayat.

Under a cloud

Kumbadaje has no history of communal violence but the BJP is determined to change that, alleged Suhara, and Shetty’s complaint is proof of that. “I enquired about the incident in my personal capacity,” she said. “It is true that a group of youngsters burst crackers that night. But it was not to celebrate Pakistan’s victory. Youngsters in Kasargod get together on Ramzan nights and start bursting firecrackers a few days before Eid.”

Suhara added, “It is a lie they raised anti-India slogans. The BJP is trying to vitiate the atmosphere and polarise the society communally.”

She also claimed that one of the accused men, Razak Chakkula, “was not even present” in the village when the incident supposedly took place. “He is working in the Gulf,” she said.

However, Shetty insisted he saw Razak on Sunday night. “I am sure Razak was present in the crowd,” he said. “That is why I mentioned his name in my complaint.”

A police official familiar with the investigation said on the condition of anonymity, because he was not authorised to speak publicly, that they could not verify Razak’s presence in the locality at the time of the incident.

Independent observers say that the police should have acted quickly to clear the air. Abdul Mujeeb, chief editor of Kasargod Vartha, a popular Malayalam online news portal in Kasargod, found fault with the police for complicating matters. “The police should have acted quickly to establish whether the incident actually happened,” he said. “I think they have erred in discharging their duties.”

Suhara hoped the accused youngsters would not be victimised anymore. “All of them are in their early 20s, and they have to look after their families,” she said. “I have told the police officials to conduct a counselling sessions on law for all youngsters in the panchayat.”

But Shetty said his party will intensify the agitation if the police fails to slap sedition charges on the accused. “They are anti-nationals and they should be punished,” he said.

Arrests draw condemnation

Meanwhile, Amnesty International India has condemned the arrest of 19 people in Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka for allegedly celebrating Pakistan’s victory. “These arrests are patently absurd, and the 19 men should be released immediately,” said Asmita Basu, Programmes Director, Amnesty International India. “Even if the arrested men had supported Pakistan, as the police claim, that is not a crime. Supporting a sporting team is a matter of individual choice, and arresting someone for cheering a rival team clearly violates their right to freedom of expression.”

The statement noted that Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code defines sedition as any act or attempt “to bring into hatred or contempt, or…excite disaffection towards the government”. Moreover, the Supreme Court of India has ruled that speech would amount to sedition only if it incites violence or leads to public disorder.

“In a 2015 case, the Court ruled: ‘Mere discussion or even advocacy of a particular cause howsoever unpopular is at the heart of [the right to freedom of expression],’” the statement added.

Those cheering Pakistan can go there: Minorities panel chief Ghayorul Hasan Rizvi

National Commission for Minorities chairman Ghayorul Hasan Rizvi has said that those who support Pakistan by celebrating their sporting achievements should cross the border and go to that country, “or better still, be deported there”.

Rizvi made the comments while attending an iftar party in Meerut on Tuesday. Speaking to The Indian Express later, he said, “I was asked about people, including those in Kashmir, who celebrated Pakistani win (in the Champions Trophy final). I said these are people whose mind and heart are actually in Pakistan, just their bodies are here, so they too should go there. Or better still, they should be deported across the border.”

Rizvi’s comments were in response to reports of celebrations in Kashmir following Pakistan’s victory over India in the final. On Tuesday, The Indian Express had reported that 17 men — 15 in Madhya Pradesh and two in Karnataka — had been charged with sedition, allegedly for celebrating Pakistan’s win.

Separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani had congratulated Pakistan on the win, while Mirwaiz Umar Farooq had tweeted, “Fireworks all around, feels like an early Eid here.

Better team took the day. Congratulations team #Pakistan.”

Rizvi, a former national general secretary of the BJP Minority Morcha, took over as chairman of the National Minorities Commission last month after a nearly four-month hiatus. One of the first statements he made was about his “personal belief” that Kashmiri pandits should be given minority status.

“It is unfortunate that some people say things like Pakistani victory has brought ‘Eid before Eid’. It is sad that they live in India, in Hindustan, and say ‘Pakistan zindabad’. As a Hindustani, this pains me a lot. My statement in Meerut came from those sentiments,” Rizvi said.

Asked why the commission, which is expected to take up pressing concerns pertaining to the six designated minority communities, is getting involved in who supports whom during a cricket match, he said, “I was asked a question. There were three things I could have done. I could have said ‘no comments’, I could have supported those people who live in India but root for Pakistan, or I could have criticised it. I did the last because that is my opinion. It is not as if the commission is taking this matter up at any level.”

Incidentally, on Tuesday, Rizvi was accused by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad of taking forward the “separatist agenda” after he announced a helpline to report atrocities against Muslims. “Rizvi, by implementing the agenda of the separatists, is strengthening the feelings of separatism in the Muslim community. (The helpline) makes one feel that the atrocities against the Muslim community have reached such proportions that the extreme step of opening a helpline for the Muslims had to be taken up,” said joint general secretary of the VHP, Surendra Jain.

Overreaction of high proportions from India. No wonder Indian muslims feel alienated and support Pakistan.

I think BJP is responsible for all this. They're the one who are promoting Pakistan Tourism.
They're the one who are alienating Muslims, and making them feel they're outsiders..
There one neta says "beef khana hai to Pakistan chale jao"
Ek kehta hai "Bharat mata ki jai bolo, warna Pakistan bhej denge"
Kabhi Vande Maatram, Kabhi Triple Talaq, kabhi kuch, kabhi kuch.. If you're Muslim and don't agree with them, you're a Pro-Pakistani.
A mature Muslim will never shout Anti-Indian slogans, and tackle this situation differently.. but youngsters who are 16-18 can be misguided easily, and some fringe elements are talking advantage of this. :(

Madhya Pradesh police drops sedition charges against 15 men held for cheering Pakistan

Three days after 15 Muslim men were charged with sedition for allegedly raising pro-Pakistan slogans and bursting crackers after Pakistan’s victory over India in the Champions Trophy cricket final, the Madhya Pradesh Police have withdrawn the sedition charge.

The 15 men, most of them youngsters, have now been charged with Section 153 A of the IPC for disturbing communal harmony. “It’s difficult to prove the sedition charge. Moreover, none of them has a criminal background. After initial investigation we found Section 153-A is more appropriate instead of Section 124-A,’’ Burhanpur SP RR Parihar told The Indian Express.

The accused, all of whom belong to Mohad village, about 25 km from Bhurnapur, have been sent to Khandwa jail. The police said the conspiracy charge (120 B of IPC) will remain.

The move follows a representation made by the families of the accused to the President of India, national and state human rights commissions and national and state minority commissions. They said the village has not witnessed any communal incident in the past. Gulzar Kasam Tadvi, the father of one of the accused, said the youngsters were innocent and that some miscreants may have burst crackers.

Earlier, when the families of the arrested men had visited the Burhanpur court premises, on Tuesday, they were cornered by some right-wing activists, advocates and common people who called them names and shouted slogans. “They raised slogans like ‘Hindustan Zindabad’. We also said ‘Hindustan Zindabad’ because we love the country,’’ said 62-year-old Gulzar Kasam, whose 23-year-old son Aitabar is among those arrested, told The Indian Express earlier.

A majority of those arrested by the Madhya Pradesh police on the sedition charge are daily wagers, while some own one or two acres of land.
On Monday, the police had charged the 15 arrested men with sedition for raising pro-Pakistani slogans and bursting crackers after India’s defeat in the ICC Champions Trophy final.

India is far backwards than what many of us originally believed. We are not doing any justice by comparing them to Pakistan. Stupid people in stupid country.

2 held for video wishing for Pak victory in cricket final

The video was shot before the Champion’s Trophy cricket final played on June 18, and was circulated “widely” in several WhatsApp groups in Sahibganj area, according to the police.

Two people were arrested in Jharkhand’s Sahibganj district in the last 24 hours for allegedly shooting a video and circulating it on social media with derogatory comments on PM Narendra Modi, and wishing a humiliating defeat for India against Pakistan.

The video was shot before the Champion’s Trophy cricket final played on June 18, and was circulated “widely” in several WhatsApp groups in Sahibganj area, according to the police.

“The video began circulating just ahead of the final…. We have booked them under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act and also for hurting religious sentiments,” Sahibganj’s SP P Murugan said.

The police said the video, of just over 30 seconds, showed one person, later identified as Sahibganj resident Sameer Ansari, using derogatory language for Modi, and then saying that Pakistan will teach a lesson to India in the final. The man who shot the video, Mohammad Adil Kamran, appeared to egg Ansari on to say more.

Yet we have fans(most of them are hiding currently) here who claim nobody gives a damn about india pak cricket matches and pakistan is not our rival in cricket. How many of you have seen people getting arrested for celebrating Australia's victory in India?

I think India has to take control of this situation. First it was the beef eating vigilantes and now this. I think it encourages people to harass others based on this without any evidence.

Abused And Assaulted In Jail, 15 Men Booked For Sedition In MP Recount Their 10-Day Horror

Getting back to normal life won't be easy for Anees Babu Mansoori, who, along with 14 others, was charged with sedition, in the Burhanpur district of Madhya Pradesh, for allegedly celebrating Pakistan's victory over India in the Champions Trophy.

"We were called traitors by the jail inmates," Mansoori recounted his horror at the Khandwa prison, where he was held for 10 days. "When we entered the jail, nearly a dozen senior jail inmates slapped each one of us and abused us," the Hindustan Times quoted him saying.

The accused were arrested by MP police on 20 June, soon after India lost to Pakistan in the ICC Champions Trophy finals, on the claim that some Muslim men have burst crackers to celebrate Pakistan's win.

But sticking to his stand, Mansoori said they did not do anything wrong.

"We are Muslims, but also Indians," he reportedly said, showing bruises on his body caused by the beating in the jail.

According to the same report, another accused, Sarfaraz Khan, said he was treated the worst because his name sounded similar to that of Pakistan's cricket team captain, Sarfraz Ahmed.

"I was beaten up mercilessly by the police. In jail the inmates did the same," the report quoted him as saying.

As the case caught the limelight and several questioned the police action against the men, the authorities dropped the charges a week later, saying "it's difficult to prove the sedition charge."

On accusations of any wrongdoing inside the jail, RRS Parihat, the superintendent of police, said that the matter will be investigated in an unbiased manner.

MP police have also come under the scanner after the complainant, one Subhash Laxman Koli, reportedly said he was forced to sign some papers and that he had not made any such complaint in the first place.
