MUMBAI: At least 22 people were killed and several injured in a rush hour stampede on a foot over bridge linking Elphinstone Road and Parel suburban railway stations in Mumbai this morning, police said.

Railway minister Piyush Goyal, who happens to be in the city, is expected to visit the site of the tragedy, said railway officials.

Meanwhile, the blame game has already begun with the Shiv Sena targeting the Railways and the NDA government at the Centre, and asking for Goyal's resignation.

A combination of heavy rain, a loud sound and rush hour caused the tragedy, according to police.

It was raining heavily when the tragedy took place around 10.40 am. Being rush hour, the over bridge was heavily crowded. A possible short-circuit near the over bridge caused a loud bang. The resulting panic and haste to get away led to people running, resulting in the stampede.

Officials of the railways, the police and the fire brigade rushed to the site to carry out rescue operations. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals.

Some reports said people are shouting slogans against the rail ministry. Trains on the Western line are running 15 to 20 minutes late.

Haven't been in power in this century either in Maharashtra or as a crucial cog in the centre.

I don't even know why they're relevant anymore.

RIP! So sad to hear, life is so cheap in our part of the world :(

Shiv Sena always talked about capacity of Mumbai and its resources. They are indirectly anti immigration but can't do anything about it because of negative publicity. This is as much of a population disaster as it is of infrastructure.Mumbai already run to more than its full capacity and people just keep pouring.

The actual population issue is happening in rural areas where having more than 3 or 4 kids is still a norm. With no job opportunities, these poor people will just board a train to Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore etc hoping something will work for them. They have no other choice.

In over crowded areas, one little mishap means stampede and death. RIP to all people who died.

There were two moments when I could have been easily got injured:.
1- When I was around 8/9 years old, I was watching a local hockey (final ) match, and I got caught in the middle of a stampede and I fell down, fortunately someone picked me up quickly.
2- Liaquat gymnasium islamabad, and again I stuck in the middle as stampede like situation happened upon the arrival of Muhammad Ali

In Pakistan, stampede can happen anywhere...recently many died in some shrine.

wow, a hockey match final and a stampede?

$12 billion to spend on a bullet train, next to nothing to spend on the safety of a railway station bridge.

Meanwhile look at these disgusting creatures.

Elphinstone stampede: Dying woman molested on bridge by bystander, video shows

A woman victim of the stampede, seconds from breathing her last, was molested by a bystander as she lay atop a pile of victims on the foot overbridge (FOB) on Friday, a video clip shows. The woman, trapped by the bodies, reaches out weakly for help before dropping her hand and breathing her last.

Jayshree Kanade, who was at Parel station when the stampede occurred, said, “Many people stole purses and gold ornaments from women victims. This molestation video is really shameful. How can someone molest a girl fighting for life and asking for help? The culprits should be punished.”

Elphinstone Road resident Sandesh Bahadur added, “The molestation video is shameful and without even watching it, one feels like punishing the coward responsible. We rushed to help. Women were crying for help. We couldn’t save many of them due to the crowd on the bridge.” Bhandup resident Anjali Bhadauria said, “Many women were wearing sarees as it was Dussehra; their clothes tore while pulling them out of the pile of bodies.”

As the molestation video circulated among passengers and officials, the anger was apparent. Niket Kaushik, Commissioner, Government Railway Police, said, “This case comes under Mumbai Police, but I will also initiate an inquiry.”

You're right, it didn't collapse however the bridge was due to be widened on the grounds of making it safer however the railway administration never got round to it.

Stampedes can happen in any crowded area. Not fair to blame the narrow bridge, which people had been using safely since years.

Meanwhile look at these disgusting creatures.

I guess they are referring to robbing of purses and gold ornaments, not sexual molestation.....still pathetic from them.....

The videos are horrifying. Several bodies being stacked one over the other...Life has no value in our part of world.

This is the saddest thing I've read in a while

I've read/heard worst. 7/11 Bombings in Mumbai(seven bombs going off in different train stations), my sister was travelling in same train in which the last bomb went off at Borivli station. She was lucky that she wasn't in the compartment where bomb was placed, however what she saw post blast was something i never thought i would ever hear. She saw policemen stealing the purse/phones/gold stuff from the victims(some were dead). They were taking the money and tossing their purse/vallet on to the tracks. Instead of trying to identify the victims(checking for Id in purse or vallet) officers were busy stealing money from the dead ones. Mumbai police is not only the corrupt ones in the world but they also the most disgusting one.

So as a Mumbaikar im not totally surprised to see or hear such stories. City of Mumbai have worlds most evil people you can come across. I love city of Mumbai dearly, but not its people.

And people say Mumbai city of dreams?? I'm never leaving Chennai ,my parents are from Delhi and I have similar feelings about Delhi too but at least got family there, how do people go to Mumbai anjaan city.

Rohan Mistry wrote a book on this 'a fine balance' in 1996 and story was set in 1975 and Mumbai was same even then :/
