Security personnel were on their toes after the recovery of more than 400 tonnes of beef from two illegal slaughterhouses in Muzaffarpur by a team of Delhi-based Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) with the help of district police on Tuesday night.
Most of the stock was recovered from Alpha Leathers located in BIADA industrial area under the Bela police station area on Monday. The factory is owned by Ankit Kapoor and Dr Parwez. Ankit also owns Global Food International, which deals in meat export. He had earlier been arrested for illegal beef trade. Both are absconding.
Town DSP Ashish Anand said a local court on Wednesday issued arrest warrants against Ankit and Parwez. He said the second factory (Alam Industries) from where 500kg beef was recovered on Tuesday night is also in the industrial area.
Parwez belongs to Bramhapura in Muzaffarpur. "There were several big halls filled with beef in Alpha Leathers," the DSP said.
Muzaffarpur SSP Vivek Kumar said police teams would be sent to Delhi to arrest Ankit. "Six persons were arrested from Alpha Leathers. However, no one was arrested from Alam Industries," he said. "Bela SHO Kashi Nath Manjhi was suspended," he said. He said samples of beef collected from the factories would be sent for forensic test to know about the animals slaughtered there.
The DSP said an agitating group of youths thrashed refrigerator truck driver Mohammad Ishteyak near Alam Industries on Tuesday night. He had gone there to pick up the consignment. "Ankit is a Delhi-based meat trader. He exports beef to several countries," he said.
