India is one of the world’s largest fish producers, yet the sector is weighed down by systemic failures.

Around 20–25% of the catch is lost post-harvest due to weak cold chains, poor handling, and inadequate storage, directly cutting fisher incomes.

Marine stocks are under stress from overfishing and weak enforcement, while small fishers struggle with limited access to formal credit and insurance, leaving middlemen to capture most value.

Exports, especially shrimp, are over-dependent on the US and EU, exposing the sector to trade shocks. Climate variability is already reducing marine landings in some regions.

Like everything else in India, the entire system is corrupt to the core. Incompetent babus and corrupt middlemen will never let the country achieve its true potential.

Sectors like these should be flourishing and raking much more money for fishermen and the country.

It’s a shame.
