I was always a fan of Aaqib Javed growing up and he supported Wasim Akram superbly in the 1992 WC (in placed of injured Waqar). Aaqib was a very underrated bowler and not talked about much. How will Aaqib compare to someone like Asif? Asif was clearly a better Test bowler but in ODI Aaqib proved himself to be a terrific medium pace bowler. Overall I think Aaqib was a better bowler based on his 1992 performance alone.

Aaqib was under rated but not after 92.. he had some great performances. But his star dwindled after 96. Overall I’ll rate Asif higher than him based on skills. Asif had unparalleled skills..

Is this a joke ?

Asif was arguable best new ball bowler ever from Asia , and probably among top 5 in the world.

Very few can compete with Asif when it came to skill, he was up there with Mcgrath in that regard.

Asif was comfortably a better bowler.

Asif wipes the floor and then some more when compared to the serial action hero/changer!!

A better comparison would be Rao Iftikhar/Rana Naveed/ and Aqib Javed.

Asif was better by a country mile. He would have been an all time great for sure had he still be playing. Aaqib though useful is simply not in that league of greats.

Asif as a Test bowler and Javed as the ODI bowler. Asif's ODI record is mediocre. He never was a good LOI bowler. Aaqib was a good LO bowler and took four 4 5 wicket hauls with best of 7/37 against India.

I am not sure about stats but Asif was hard to get away in LOIs though. He might not have picked up many wickets but he didnt give away many runs.

Asif is slightly overrated because people often forget his struggles on dead wickets.

More often than not, he trundled hopelessly on grass-less wickets. However, he was still better than a B grade operator like Aaqib.

Aaqib was in the league of Gul, Wahab, Amir, Junaid etc., while Asif was in-between that league and the league of Imran, Wasim, Fazal and Waqar.

Asif was probably in the same class as Sarfaraz Nawaz, and just below Shoaib Akhtar, who had one foot in the league of Imran, Wasim, Fazal and Waqar.

Aaqib was a bowler who got the best out of his skills due to hard work. He wasn't naturally gifted, rather largely relied on learning skills over the course of his career.

Asif was naturally gifted and had much more variety to his bowling compared with Aaqib. Sadly though Asif as we all know did not make the best use of his talents.

Aquib’s career was effected by team politics. His relation with Akram was not the best. Also he was out of the circle of the match fixers. Overall if I had the option of Aquib at his peak or Asif at his peak, I would pick Aquib in ODIs and Asif in tests.

Agree with most of what you said except for categorising Aaqib as Grade B operator. Ata ur Rehman was a Grade B. Shahid Nazeer was a Grade B. Not Aaqib Javed.
May be if we call Waseem and Waqar Grade A+, Aaqib can be Grade A.
Grade B just does not sound good for Aaqib’s class.

You are forgetting Aaqib helped us win the 1992 WC. He always took crucial wickets and was a brilliant ODI bowler.

Sorry one more thing, Aaqib cannot be the same category as Gul and Wahab as the later won us nothing.

Well these categories are arbitrary assigned: I have put greats of the game in category A, which means I will have to put Aaqib in a lower category because he was from from a great.

He was fantastic every now and then, but his lack of consistency meant that he was never really among the top bowlers in the world. I feel that he should be in the same category as bowlers like Amir, Gul, Junaid, Wahab etc.

He was closer to the level of the above mentioned bowlers than Wasim, Imran and Waqar.

Ata, Shahid Nazir, Mohammad Akram etc. should be grade C. In hindsight, perhaps Wahab should also be in grade C.

I think they are similarities between him and Gul. Both were excellent ODI bowlers in their prime, but they weren’t consistent in Test and generally did not do enough to be considered elite bowlers. Agree with Wahab, it is hard to club him with Aaqib and Gul.

Apart from two spells, neither of which won us the games, he has done nothing in his career.

Fair enough, he was no doubt a level below greatness, still a handy bowler and made big name for Pakistan. He got Sachin out with new ball when he was a giant. That amazing Sharjah hattrick! Then the WC 1992 wickets. Then numerous wickets in Sharjah which helped us win many throphies. There still so many highlightes of Aaqib’s career.
