South Africa superstar reportedly close to calling it quits from the longest format to focus on limited-overs matches

AB de Villiers faces crunch talks with South Africa officials as the superstar batsman ponders ditching Test cricket to extend his career in limited-overs formats. De Villiers has been struggling with a long-term elbow injury that has seen him out of action since mid-2016. He stood down from the Test captaincy after a Faf du Plessis-led side completed a memorable 2-1 series victory against Australia in December. The 32-year-old has recovered from his elbow issue sufficiently to make his return in South Africa's domestic 50-over competition, and is scheduled to play his first match next Sunday. He continues to be South Africa's one-day international captain, and could be back in Proteas colours for the third T20 match against Sri Lanka, ahead of an ODI series.

However, his involvement in the longest format is the subject of increasing speculation. "I'm not sure how AB will feel in terms of Test cricket so we will have to see," du Plessis said after wrapping up victory against Sri Lanka. "We are excited to have him back in the one-day team. I am hoping he decides to play (Tests) for us. "He is obviously a world-class batter and I, as a captain, would love to have him as a leader in our team, and obviously as a batter. He is a fantastic player.

"He hasn't played for a while. The plan was for him to play in this series and then the one-dayers start, but now we will see what AB's plans are – whether he wants to play," du Plessis said. Proteas coach Russell Domingo said team officials would discuss his playing future with de Villiers in looming talks. "We need to sit down with him and plan his future," Domingo said. "AB has got to make that decision, I can't decide on whether he plays or not. "When I say that, I mean AB has got to make the decision about whether he is available and the selectors have got to make the decision whether he plays. "He has obviously got to make some decision about his future in cricket."

Complicating matters for de Villiers is Cricket South Africa's commitment to transformation – commonly known as the quota system – with conjecture about how a man who has scored 21 Test centuries and averages more than 50 would fit back into a team that has won six of their past eight Tests while he has been out injured. Temba Bavuma is the man most under pressure to retain his position after a poor run of form that’s seen him average just seven from his past seven Test innings. But Bavuma, a black African, has been publicly backed to retain his position by South Africa's selectors. If de Villiers did pull the pin on a Test career that has netted him 8,074 runs in 106 matches in more than 12 years, it would put KFC Big Bash League clubs on high alert. De Villiers was heavily courted by the Sydney Thunder after their BBL|05 win following the retirements of Michael Hussey and Jaques Kallis, a close friend of de Villiers. The Melbourne Stars would also be understood to be interested in the South African's services.

International-calibre South Africans are typically unavailable for the Big Bash as their season coincides with the premier domestic T20 tournament. But with the BBL coinciding with South Africa's Test season, De Villiers could conceivably play part of the season before returning to lead South Africa's one-day team, much like England players such as Jason Roy, Sam Billings and David Willey have all done in BBL|06. De Villiers also has lucrative playing contracts in the Indian Premier League, where he plays alongside Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle for Royal Challengers Bangalore, and the Caribbean Premier League.

Another great era about to end - he will be missed.

Not sure if his heart is fully in test cricket. Add to that, the quota system which I am sure he is not happy with. He is more interested in the IPL and seems to enjoy it.

All in all, end to a great test career. Advantage RCB/IPL.

Wants to prolong his IPL career*

Hate players like this, SA are better without gutless players like him.

Will lose a lot of respect for AB if he doesn't stick around at least until the tour of England. After that, South Africa have a long home season and they can use that to phase out the seniors and bring in some fresh blood.

He's represented his country at the senior level almost 400 times keeping wicket for many of them. If that's "gutless" then I think cricket could do with more gutless players.

I hope he sticks around, South Africa could do with him in the test format.

He is right.. shouldn't end up being a burden like Amla

This was totally obvious like months ago now.

He is no great of the game.

Could see it coming, was extremely obvious to me the moment he resigned as captain. He has no future in Test cricket.

Why is there any doubt that AB would or should return straight to the test team? Adding him to the current linup will make SA near invincible. He only has a few years left in him, lets make the most of it

It will be a very very sad day if AB does not play anymore test cricket but how great AB is, he isn't greater than cricket. And just about every 6 months there is something about him changing his mind/commitment

If he has to play IPL long and quitting test cricket for that then that is beyond pathetic

I think his heart simply wasn't in it.Don't agree with him being an ATG.A South Africa great for sure though.

As someone who has followed him since his debut, de Villiers to me comes across as a player who doesn't like to have the responsibility of leading the team, either as captain or as senior player.

For pretty much the entirety of his Test career, he was cushioned by players like Kallis, Smith, Amla and Steyn, who all had bigger impact and influence on SA's dominance in Tests. Now that the former are gone and the latter are on their last legs, SA need de Villiers more than ever and he doesn't seem up for it.

I can't help but feel that the resignation of Amla last year (could be a sacking behind closed doors) and abruptly making him captain could have been CSA's ploy to stop him from retiring, which obviously did not work.

He doesn't like captaincy which is very clear. Not many players have the mentality to lead a struggling side. His comments after South Africa were eliminated in the SF two years ago at the World Cup that 'I can't win the World Cup alone' was one of the poorer statements any captain can make.

He will retire from international cricket after the 2019 World Cup and probably wants to save his body to have final shots at the Champions Trophy this year, the WT20 next year and the World Cup in two years time, because he is desperate to win a trophy with South Africa.

RCB needs him in Internationals to keep his skills and fitness sharp. And an international player is more marketable.

So for IPL, you have to continue Ab.

Nothing to do with IPL. He wants to win a WC for his country. At the age of almost 33, he probably wants to focus on that. SA test team are fine without him anyway.

The IPL is a retirement home for so many, and someone like AB can continue playing the IPL for the next five years even if he doesn't play a single international game from now on.

He will play even if he retires but as I said his market value will be diminished and that is an important thing in tournament like IPL and for a popular team like RCB.

AB de Villiers 'Opts Out' of the upcoming Test Series against New Zealand

Strange decision, especially when he's now completely fit and South Africa could use him in the middle-order. Says that he wants to win the 2019 WC so he's managing his workload. Has not retired from the test format, however.

Thoughts? :sanga

All he needs to do is to say yes to playing in PSL. No one will suddenly have an issue with him not being too keen on Tests :P

Jokes apart, someone who has played 100+ tests and 200+ ODIs, scoring 18000+ international runs with 45 100s, has given it all for his country. Even if he was to totally retire from international cricket now, will go down a SA legend and SA's best ever batsman in shorter formats.

What a shame. Hope he sorts things out and returns to Test cricket soon.

So he hasn't retired from test cricket but he doesn't have any major goal when it comes to the longer format.

Not sure if staying away from test matches would turn things around in odis, particularly in WCs.

I am indifferent and opposing to these decisions made by him.

If he wins a WC then great but if he doesn't it is worth criticism.

"I've made myself unavailable for the New Zealand Test series. I will be there for the ODIs, and I'm definitely not retiring from Test cricket because I have plans to come back at some stage. For me, for now the most important thing is the 2019 World Cup. I want to make sure we get there. I want to make sure we lift that trophy. Obviously there are other factors that play a role like family and time away from home, but the main reason for me is that World Cup and I feel that if I play all formats all the time, then mentally and physically I won't be at my best."

Not something the Test cricket elitists would like to hear. It clearly bursts the myth that players don't care about ODI cricket.

My general take on the issue is that he is keen to retire from Tests but is not willing to make a public declaration yet because he fears the negative reaction and the criticism. However at some point, he will have to bit the bullet - it is abundantly clear that he is done with Test cricket.

If he does not want to play test cricket anymore, he should simply retire from that format. No shame in doing that when you have played over 100 tests.

Chris Gayle gets a lot of hate for not playing test cricket but people forget that he has played 103 tests.

I think its the quota thing and the CSA have called his bluff here. Ab has not been the same since the 2015 Wc semi and the birth of his first kid. morkel himself has been injured since god knows when.

He wants to convince everyone that ODIs are what he cares about. Who does he think he's kidding? Just retire already and go to the IPL and take your money like Chris from the West Indies.

He's ruled himself out of the Tests against England aswell.

No matter who the player is, no one is bigger than the game. He shouldn't be allowed to pick and choose when he plays. If he doesn't want to play Test cricket then retire.

My only gripe is that he will return to the test team just when we embark on the south african shores.

And will proceed to belt us to avenge the 2015 series.:sree

He should just retire now.Skipping all the important tours is,to be quite frank, pathetic.Whats the point of playing if you're missing all of the big matches?

Unless,of course, those reasons are big enough to miss those matches.I mean family life and so.

AB de Villiers is facing an uncertain time in his cricketing career. After opting out of the three-Test series against New Zealand in March, the star South Africa batsman has ruled himself out of the four-Test series against England in July, which follows the Champions Trophy in that country.

Not only the England series, de Villiers has put himself out of reckoning for the two-Test home series against Bangladesh as well. This has only increased the speculation surrounding his Test future. However, in an interview with a South African radio station, de Villiers has ruled out retiring from Tests while stating that he wants to stay fresh for the 2019 World Cup.

“I’m not retiring out of Test cricket. I’m not retiring out of any format, that’s for sure. We haven’t won a World Cup yet. For me, for now the most important thing is the 2019 World Cup. I want to make sure we get there. I want to make sure we lift that trophy. I feel that if I play all formats all the time, then mentally and physically I won’t be at my best,” said the batsman who holds the record for the fastest ODI century --- off just 31 balls against West Indies in 2015.

De Villiers was plagued by a persistent elbow problem that required surgery after the end of the England series in July 2016. The injury ruled him out of the New Zealand Tests at home, the three-match series in Australia and the ongoing three-Test series against Sri Lanka.

However, there is still no clarity on his return. According to some reports, de Villiers is targeting a return to the Test team towards the end of the 2017/18 season. India and Australia are the teams scheduled to tour South Africa, according to the Future Tours Programme.

There is good news for Indian fans though as de Villiers has made himself available for the Indian Premier League but for no other Twenty20 league. De Villiers, who is Virat Kohli’s team-mate at Royal Challengers Bangalore, is one of the key players with Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle in a team that finished runners-up last season.

The dashing right-hander is all set to comeback in the limited-overs format in the three Twenty20 Internationals against Sri Lanka starting on January 20. South Africa will play three T20Is and five ODIs against Sri Lanka ahead of the Champions Trophy that begins in England in June.

This is nauseating..

Just make the damn decision!

Irony much?:)))

Should just call it a day in test cricket already.

This is poor stuff from De Villiers, picking and choosing series as if the South African Test team is his personal plaything. Retire and let South Africa build for the future with their Test middle order.

Well Test cricket is easy when you come after Smith, Amla and Kallis with the score at 200/3.
Now things are a bit tough he wants to run away.

He has made himself unavailable for a crucial series in England after compromising his fitness for the tour of Australia, but will play a full IPL season?
That doesn't sound like a guy whose got his priorities in order.
Players can't pick and choose when they feel like playing for their country anyway. CSA should have made him retire.

My general observation is that this guy is a fairweather cricketer. When Kallis, Amla and Smith were winning matches he was more than happy to score soft runs and rep his country. That route is no longer available, hence he's looking for an easy way out.
It's clear to see that he has given up on his country. In my opinion i think he wants to retire from all forms of international cricket, he doesn't have the gall bladder to say he wants to play IPL over his country. Which sickens me to the pit of my stomach. I would rather have a half talented player who is fully committed and hungry to play for his country. No matter how much he's earning at the IPL, AB can never be bigger than his country. He should gracefully retire.
He was a passenger, a very good passenger, but a passenger non the less. That will be his legacy, when he needed to step up after the greats who carried and babysat him retired he found the pot too hot to handle and jumped ship.

Overhyped cricketer who never really amounted to much other than his stints in IPL.

When was the last time he won Saffers a match? If hitting a classy boundary once or twice and then getting out makes one an ATG, then make Afridi an ATG too.

Yeah, he's been soft in tests. Brilliant in ODIs though.

Averages 53 at a SR of 100. You might be selling him a little short here.

So you can play a full season of the IPL but not for your country in a test series vs England in England? Thanks for showing your true colours AB, it's clear he wants to retire from tests. Don't let the door hit you on your way out.

To be honest ABD doesn't have that many memorable knocks in ODIs, like saving his team from trouble and leading to impossible wins (the ones you see from VK). He has scored many good knocks when there was little pressure and his runs were of little consequence at the end. ABD crumbled under pressure more often than not and that's what most important in ODIs.

He has a better World Cup record than Kohli however, is far more explosive and has a balanced record everywhere and against all types of bowling. Which is why I rate de Villiers as the best of his era and Kohli somewhere in the top four, along with Amla and Dhoni.

I don't count world cup records unless it leads to the finals. ABD has choked in crucial world cup moments and SAF hasn't won a cup yet. Tendulkar had two awesome world cups (2003 and 2011) in which India became runner up and winner. ABD needs to score in semi finals and finals, otherwise his WC stats don't hold much value

He did. In the latest edition and all but won South Africa the match but the bowling was sub-par towards the end. I wasn't even speaking of Tendulker, I was speaking of Kohli who failed spectacularly in his own World Cup semi-final.

Speaking of test cricket, AB might not be an ATG but he's still pretty good and a modern great. With that being said, this is really shameful and he should just be open and explicitly tell what is priorities are. If SAF doesn't let him play anymore in test in it's very well in their rights to do so. If a guy has time to play IPL and CPL but test then he should better remain outside the team. No individual is bigger than the sport and ABD's inclusion will only hurt future prospects. Can't keep a guy who's not committed to the team.

I fully understand his personal reasons for wanting to earn more money, but us fans only judge a cricketer by his contribution to national team. If ABD thinks he can play test for SAF whenever he wants then he's disrespecting the game. So be honest and speak up your mind ABD.

He is great one of the greats the game has ever seen.I don't think anyone doubt his caliber as a player

The problem is i didn't get why AB is giving too much hype on 2019 WC. It will only raise expectations and create pressure.I can really smell an early choke next time He need to think that he alone can't win the WC.Last time he had an exceptional wc but still SA fainted under pressure

Yes neither we fans nor csa is feeding him so for the betterment of his life he need to look forward may be thats why he is not interested in test cricket no more and prefered ipl

But this is sad extremely sad from such a great player...if playing for the country is no more the priority what is left in the sport....He may think that he served the country over 100 test matches and done enough but when we talk about the player AB after 10-15 years this is going to kill his reputation however he deserves that

I'm quite confused by this behaviour. AB played 96 tests in a row since debut and now seems to be sending contradictory signals. First he says he isn't retiring from tests and isn't picking and choosing which tests to play. Then goes on to pick and choose which tests to play.

I do however think there is something going on in the background we're not aware of. Maybe he feels Faf stabbed him in the back and stole his captaincy? Maybe CSA first gave his "rightful" captaincy to Amla, which turned into a disaster. Then gave it to him as soon as it became apparent that their decision was a huge mistake. Now they give it away as soon as he's injured and his competent friend, entrusted with his team, takes his captaincy.

It's pretty much all speculation. For all we know AB is in reality this contradictory character and such a bad person as a lot of posters make him out to be. In my opinion, AB has been a servant of cricket for a long time. Maybe he should be given the benefit of the doubt as he is clearly sending uncharacteristic signals.

Should retire from tests. It's his choice, I don't blame him. But if he doesn't really want to play, just blocking a space for someone else especially with the quota system in place. Don't think you can just come back in and out here and there, it's unfair on the other players. Either has to aim to be a regular player or not. It's not like SA have no other batsmen.

I think he just doesn't enjoy test cricket much anymore. He looks being more innovative and loose with his shots, which I'm sure he loves stuff like IPL (not just for money). He's also probably seeing how the team doesn't really need him, not as a player or as captain (think he knows Faf is the better captain, and knows his own captaincy hasn't been up to the mark).

He also feels more needed in LOI cricket where there are few in the team or the world that can play like him. While he's just a very good player in tests, but not one of the best like in LOI.

Why should he take the decision to retire now ? He's still just 32 yrs old.

cowardly decision to back out of the England tour when Saffers will really need his experience in Tests he had it easy for a long time behind the Colossus Smith Amla and Kallis who were churning out runs for fun while AB comes in and smashes a tired bowling attack. Not a Test Great. He will go down as a Saffer Great but had the talent to become an ATG but never fulfilled that

Argh this was perfect time to get A.Cook to retire off from INTL cricket, damn u ABD!

I don't think it would be too bad if he retires from test cricket. He has played a hundred tests and contributed to his nation. He probably feels he wants to secure his future in the IPL with the rand deteriorating and his comrades jumping ship to England to secure their own futures. Atleast he hasn't done so and still wants to win the elusive world cup for his nation which is commendable. He probably feels it will be tough to play all formats simultaneously at this age.

But I think he should announce his retirement if he feels playing tests are a burden to his body. Another youngster can be groomed for his position in the south african test side. Picking and choosing series will not do any good unfortunately. I understand that he wants to contribute in test cricket as well but should take a decision on it.

He averages like 17 against Bangladesh so not surprised that he's sitting out.

Absolutely pathetic

Especially the England tour

Should just announce his retirement

I feel AB should retire from test with some dignity. His last 11 innings were 0, 9, 42, 43, 49, 37, 88, 36, 0, 0, 0 with 4 ducks and just a single half century, at an average of 27.63 which reflects his declining interest in the format. He could have been excused for poor form had he not opt in and out of the team. With such mentality he's being a hindrance to other players who're trying to play for the national team. AB is better off playing IPL and CPL, shameful really.

Has always been a grade A coward. I personally made up my mind when he sent a bowling all-rounder Peterson ahead of himself in the CT semifinal 4 years ago when Anderson and Broad were swinging the ball square, only to show up when the ball stopped swinging and still got a duck.

Cricket is a game of character more than anything else, and he doesn't have an ounce of character, in spite of having an exceptional gift for the game.

That's why Graeme Smith is Imo one of the all time greats. AB while being much more talented, doesn't have 1/10th of his mental strength. Lost respect for AB over the past 2 years.

Smith was brilliant. An ATG cricketer for me without any doubt. He was a top class opener but more than that, he had some serious guts and a big heart.

Believe he should be relieved of the one-day captaincy too. Deplorable example to set for all the youngsters coming through SA cricket. What has happened to the hard-nosed South African cricket professional? Guys like Kepler Wessels, Allan Lamb, Peter Kirsten, Pat Symcox, Jimmy Cook would be quivering at such disrespect for the team. Compare and contrast with the patience and endurance shown by Stephen Cook over the past decade and a half to bide his time and grab his opportunity at the highest level. De Villiers has been pampered and cosseted by the game too long. This just betrays him as the fraudulent coward of a cricketer that he has always been accused of by his detractors. I reckon this will prove a lasting mark against his legacy.

Disappointed with him

Pretty gutless and downright disgusting if you ask me

He should remember 10 years down the line no one will care for his exploits in IPL or CPL or whatever
