Actions of Israeli forces in the occupied territories

Israel’s power comes from their influence over American Bible Belt pastors. I watched some American Gospel telly. These are fundamentalist people who believe the Book of Revelation word for word. They really do think Christ will return to Israel and rule. Sadly, no Congressman, Governor, Senator or POTUS can ignore this voting constituency.

I agree to some extent but Jews and Christians historically have been opposed, remember Christians believe Jews tried to kill Jesus(pbuh). Muslims saved Jews throughout against Christians, Islamic Spain being one good example.

But when fundamentalists/zionists Jews and Christians joined forces , things have changed. As both are not only waiting but are trying to bring about the end times.

The Quran addresses this and is pointing out such Christians and Jews not others.

"[5:52] O ye who believe! take not the Jews and the Christians for friends. They are friends one to another. And whoso among you takes them for friends is indeed one of them. Verily, Allah guides not the unjust people."

As much as it hurts to say it , the israel and Palestinian story is over. It’s like beating a dead horse. Israel will take all the land from Palestine in decades to come.

As a Pakistani from Lahore, your posts are very similar to RSS/BJP posters views.

You may fantasise over this but Israel is a temp outpost, nothing more. Crusaders kept the holy land for over 100 years but left eventually, same will happen here.

Senior Muslim leaders in Jerusalem have written to King Charles III expressing “deep concern” about UK Prime Minister Liz Truss’s decision to consider moving the British embassy from its current location in Tel Aviv, in a letter seen by Middle East Eye.

At a meeting with her Israeli counterpart, Yair Lapid, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in September, Truss said she was considering moving the embassy to Jerusalem. She later announced that she had launched a review into the issue.

A statement addressed to Britain's new monarch written by leaders of the Islamic Waqf, a Palestinian-Jordanian body that runs the affairs of al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem, and the current and former grand muftis of Jerusalem and Palestine, Sheikh Mohammad Hussein and Sheikh Ekrima Sabri, respectively, condemned the potential relocation.

“Jerusalem has been a great example of coexistence and peace between its religious communities for centuries,” the joint letter said.

“The International Community, including the United Kingdom, recognised the special historic and legal arrangement, also known as the 'Status Quo' since 1852.”

The letter stated that the special status of protecting the rights of different religions continued until 1967, “when Israel started to impose many unilateral measures in favor of its Jewish identity/community”.

It explained that the international community, through multiple United Nations resolutions, has denied Israel’s unilateral measures, and called on conserving the pre-1967 status quo.

“We oppose moving the British embassy to Jerusalem since we understand it, as a message to the universe that the UK, in contrary to the international law and the Status Quo, accepts the continuing Israeli illegal military occupation of the Palestinian territories, the Israeli unilateral annexation of East Jerusalem and the Israeli illegal Judaisation measures in the Holy City.”

It added that the move undermined a two-state solution and would inflame religious conflict in an “already unstable situation in Jerusalem”.

Middle East Eye reached out to Buckingham Palace for comment but did not receive a response by the time of publication.

King Charles III visited Jerusalem as Prince of Wales in 2020, when he expressed sympathy for Palestinians and wished them "freedom, justice and equality" in the future. His admiration and knowledge of Islamic history and theology have also been well documented.

CondemnationsThe letter is the latest in a long list of statements from senior religious figures to condemn the potential move.

On Monday, Christian leaders in Jerusalem described the review as a “further impediment to advancing the already moribund peace process”.

A spokesperson for Justin Welby, the archbishop of Canterbury, told Middle East Eye last week: “The archbishop is concerned about the potential impact of moving the British Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem before a negotiated settlement between Palestinians and Israelis has been reached.”

In addition, Cardinal Vincent Nichols, the most senior Catholic leader in the UK, said he saw “no valid reason” for the move, describing it as “seriously damaging”.

A briefing note circulated by the lobbying group, the Conservative Friends of Israel, to affiliated Conservative members of parliament stated that the UK government already owned land in west Jerusalem earmarked as a site for a new embassy.

In a shock intervention on Tuesday, former UK foreign secretary William Hague - who is an ex-Conservative Party leader - said moving the embassy would align Truss's government with former US President Donald Trump.

Trump broke with international convention by moving the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem in 2018 - a move which was then condemned by the British government.

Only three other UN member states have embassies in Jerusalem: Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.

Downing Street has said there are no plans to move the UK's embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Liz Truss had ordered a review of the embassy's location when she was prime minister.

The spokesperson of new PM Rishi Sunak said the idea "had been looked at" but the embassy would not be moving.

A move would have been contentious, with the Palestinians previously calling Ms Truss's proposal a "blatant violation of international law".

The opening of the US embassy in Jerusalem in 2018 was met with outrage across the Arab world.

Ms Truss raised the idea of relocating the embassy during this summer's Conservative leadership campaign.

During her brief period as prime minister she discussed it with her Israeli counterpart Yair Lapid when they met at the UN in New York.

Mr Lapid later tweeted his thanks to Ms Truss for "positively considering" it.

On Twitter, the Palestinian ambassador to the UK, Husam Zomlot, said: "Any embassy move would be a blatant violation of international law and the UK's historic responsibilities.... such a promise is immoral, illegal and irresponsible!"

Ms Truss was forced to quit as prime minister after just 45 days, after her tax plans triggered turmoil in the markets. Conservative MPs selected Rishi Sunak to replace her.

Benjamin Netanyahu set to form government after Israeli PM concedes defeat in election

Israeli prime minister Yair Lapid has conceded defeat to former PM Benjamin Netanyahu in this week's election.

Mr Netanyahu, 73, is expected to form the country's most right-wing government in history when he takes power, likely in the coming weeks.

Mr Lapid said he had congratulated Mr Netanyahu and had instructed his office to prepare an organised transition of power.

"The state of Israel comes before any political consideration," caretaker prime minister Mr Lapid said in a statement.

"I wish Netanyahu success, for the sake of the people of Israel and the State of Israel."

Although final results were still being tallied, Mr Lapid's concession indicates an official nod that Mr Netanyahu would be returning to power, securing a parliamentary majority with his religious and ultranationalist allies.

On Tuesday, Israel held its fifth election in four years which saw voters divided over Mr Netanyahu's fitness to serve while on trial for corruption.

Israeli election officials were tallying the final votes from national elections today, with Mr Netanyahu looking likely to reclaim the premiership with a comfortable majority backed by far-right allies.

Mr Netanyahu's top ally is expected to be the far-right Religious Zionism party, whose main candidate, Itamar Ben-Gvir, is a disciple of an anti-Arab rabbi and has promised to deport Arab legislators.

The controversial Mr Ben-Gvirn, who has been convicted for incitement to racism and was once declared unfit for office by Mr Netanyahu himself, is expected to seek a cabinet position as head of the ministry that oversees policing.
