Russia's foreign minister has been criticised for claiming Adolf Hitler "had Jewish origins" and "some of the worst antisemites are Jews".

Sergei Lavrov hit out at Ukraine's president during an interview with Italian media, saying Volodymyr Zelenskyy's Jewish ancestry "doesn't mean anything" while trying to justify Vladimir Putin's call to "denazify" the nation.

When Russia invaded Ukraine in February, President Putin described it as a "special military operation" to remove leaders he claimed were neo-Nazis.

Israel has called Mr Lavrov's remarks "unforgiveable" and summoned Russia's ambassador for an explanation.

Speaking through an interpreter, Mr Lavrov told Italian media: "So what if Zelenskyy is Jewish? The fact does not negate the Nazi elements in Ukraine.

"Hitler also had Jewish origins, so it doesn't mean anything. Some of the worst antisemites are Jews."

Israeli foreign minister Yair Lapid said the comments were "scandalous and a horrible historical error".

He added: "The Jews did not murder themselves in the Holocaust. The lowest level of racism against Jews is to blame Jews themselves for antisemitism."

Israel has tried to hold a position of neutrality during the war and has been measured in its criticism of Russia, who it relies on for security coordination in the Middle East.

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has also tried mediating between Russia and Ukraine.

In his bid to legitimise the war to Russian citizens, President Putin has portrayed the battle as a struggle against Nazis in Ukraine, even though the country has a democratically-elected government and a Jewish president whose relatives were killed in the Holocaust.

Just hours into the invasion, Mr Putin appealed directly to Ukrainian troops and said it was "easier to negotiate with you" than the "gang of Nazis that has captured Kyiv".

In February, Mr Lavrov said "we will do everything possible to ensure that the Ukrainian government is independent", adding: "At the moment it is under external control with the aim to support or encourage Nazi philosophy and it is under Western control."

What is the controversy?

Boychenko, like his leader and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, called the Russian invasion and destruction "genocide". The mayor said there have been more than 20,000 civilian deaths in Mariupol since the war started, claiming it's more than double the killings carried out by German Nazis.

Lavrov hit back, comparing Zelensky to Hitler. According to a transcript of his interview posted on the Russian foreign ministry website, Lavrov said that Zelensky "puts forward an argument of what kind of Nazism can they have if he himself is Jewish".

"I could be wrong, but Hitler also had Jewish blood," he added

Moscow has previously said it wants to "de-militarise" and "de-Nazify" Ukraine.

Israel slams Lavrov's remarks
Israel, which has sought to keep a delicate balance between Russia and Ukraine since the war began on February 24, slammed Lavrov and summoned Moscow's ambassador for "clarifications".

Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid condemned the “outrageous” remarks in a statement. "Jews did not murder themselves in the Holocaust," Lapid said, adding: "The lowest level of racism against Jews is to accuse Jews themselves of anti-semitism."

What is known about Hitler's ancestry?

According to the BBC, unproven facts have been swirling around for decades that Hitler had Jewish blood. This was based on the claims made by Hitler's lawyer Hans Frank in his memoir, which was published in 1953.

The BBC report further said that Frank had been instructed by Hitler himself to find out if he indeed had Jewish roots. The Nazi Party member claimed to have uncovered evidence that Hitler's grandfather was indeed Jewish, the publication further said.

However, many mainstream historians had rubbished these claims.

Other things to know about Hitler

According to Encyclopedia Britannica, a Swedish legislator nominated Hitler for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1939. Though he intended it as a joke, the announcement created uproar and the nomination was quickly withdrawn. Encyclopedia Britannica further said that Hitler's career as an artist was a failure after he was rejected by the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. He lived in poverty trying to sell his work.

Asked about this earlier, the Russian foreign minister had said: "So when they say ‘How can Nazification exist if we’re Jewish?’ In my opinion, Hitler also had Jewish origins, so it doesn't mean absolutely anything. The remarks have since been condemned by Western leaders as untrue and absurd.

Interesting claims are emerging from the Russian foreign ministry this morning.

Moscow has alleged that Israeli mercenaries are fighting alongside the far-right Azov Regiment in Ukraine.

This comes after Russia suggested Adolf Hitler had "Jewish blood".

"Israeli mercenaries are practically shoulder to shoulder with Azov militants in Ukraine," Maria Zakharova told Sputnik radio.

The Azov Regiment is a far-right, all-volunteer infantry military unit whose members are often accused of harbouring neo-Nazi ideology.

In 2014, the Azov Regiment took up arms to fight pro-Russian separatists in the eastern Donbas region.

It has been fighting Russian troops alongside Ukrainian defence forces since the invasion was launched in late February.
