I think most isloo posters here know about the afghani burger.

For those who do not know, Afghani Burger is a Wrap stuffed with French Fries, Hot Dog(s) and Salami Slice, Mayo and Mint Chatni. It is made on Afghani bread. Its made mostly by Afghanis in Islamabad and Peshawar

Its the main snack of Islamabad, and has been very popular here as its the only good hygienic cheap meal you could find around here.

Whats your take?

The Indian version of the same by Afghans although Its without meat ,they have a chicken version.

One of the greatest things under RNGesus' blue heaven. Najeeb in F-10 has the best Afghani burgers, even better than what you can get in Peshawar now, although some of the vendors there before the deportation spree began would make Najeeb look like an amateur. I could easily live on a diet of Najeeb's Jumbo Afghan Burgers (265 Wala) for the rest of my life which may not be too long on account of the inevitable morbid obesity and cholesterol issues they would cause but it would still be totally worth it.

That looks.... vile. Onions and cabbage on an Afghani burger is like fried rice without rice. The real thing is just french fries, meat loaf and/or sausages with spices and a special sauce.

Afghani burger got nothing on this bad boy :altaf

the king of street food.:corleone

Authentic Shawarma is close second.:baelish

I don't like french fries in a wrap....

Prefer chicken shawarma or a yufka doner than this.

I have found Najeeb very mediocre compared to others. The one in khawaja market (g-9/4) and the one in blue area in front of Shaheen are the best things in existence. I've been having 2 afghani burgers from blue area every week for about 6 months now. You must try it if you haven't already.

Najeeb is amazing. Haven't tried the one in Blue Area but none of the vendors in G-9 hold a candle to Najeeb.

That's why i said its a version of it suitable to locals, similar to Biryani ,we have a mushroom version too now.

Mushrooms in biryani sounds good as long as it's not the core ingredient the biryani is based on but then I'm one of those people who thinks anything can be improved by adding one or both of shrimps and mushrooms. The idea of onions or cabbage in an Afghani burger, on the other hand, sounds all kind of wrong. The idea of onions in anything is wrong. I flat out refused to eat anything with onions in it and our Indian chef here thinks that onions should constitute no less than 75% of any given dish resulting in about a quarter of my salary going to eating out every day.

what's afghani about it apart from the vendor and maybe the bread...

This reminds me of a Garhwal Dosa shop in Bareilly. The only thing Afgan about the food here is name. Btw, why do they call it a burger?

I have seen this trend in Delhi. They serve desi stuff in inflated oversized rotis, and call it Afgan food.

I always believed that the afghani burger could be soo much better if they changed the sauces.

Mayo and mint chutney are not proper sauces. Chatney is digisting.

Afghani burger should have mustard or a tzatziki kind of sauce. The mayo just makes the whole thing heavy.

Afghani burger needs to get the sauce right. Or else very dry

I get your point but you need to realize onion is such an important part of Indian cuisine that govnts fall if the price rises not to forget personally i prefer white onions which imho would be awesome in any dish

And mushroom is the core, its vegan and vegetarian dish.

It's similar(ish) in Pakistan though not nearly to that extent and it's much easier to avoid onions there. The stuff our chef makes is just inedible though because of the sheer amount of onions in any given dish. On the flip side, it's been a great experience ordering from a new place every day so more power to him. Half day today so going to cook and school that idiot in how to cook a proper meal that doesn't look or taste like things I'd rather not name here.

Not in ISB any more. Why would I have an Indian chef there? Haven't tried the Biryani you're talking about but Biryani in ISB is usually pretty bad. Not a huge fan of biryani anyway.

Where in Islamabad can you get it from??

F-10 and G-9. Other places too(there's a guy in I-10 who sets up his stall after sunset). The one in F-10 makes arguably the best Afghani burger in Pakistan.

They guy in front of Shaheen blue area (the Shaheen next to D Watson and not the corner one) is the best. There is another one who sits in front of corner Shaheen but he's crap. The one in khawaja market g9/4 (name is tasty bites) imo is better than Najeeb but Najeeb isn't bad either . Blue area is the best tho

Dont you think this food could.improve if better sauce is use like mustard or some other instead of chutny and mayo

So its more like a Mediterranean Chicken Wrap available in USA. You can find a similar one in all Greek Takeouts.

You said this earlier in the thread and I had to reply to that but I was in class. It could be but I don't think they could afford it, the burger is already priced quite low. I personally really like the green chutney, not a big fan of mayo but I still like it when it's in small quantities. The biggest thing that I hate is the inconsistency, one day you'll eat the burger and it'll be the best ever and the next days the same person could serve you with something barely half as good. The very subtle differences in the mixture of ingredients makes a big difference.

The guy I referred to in blue area has his own sauce, it's white in color but it's not mayo. I really love that and that's the reasons that makes him stand out from others along with the use of bbq chicken rather than sausages.

don't get how something with hotdogs and salami is remotely close to a burger?

Sorry that doesn't look vile at all. The OP mentioned that that's an Indian version of it or maybe a different dish altogether - onion and cabbage/lettuce is quite commonly used in wraps and burgers.

I've heard the street food in Delhi is amazing ! I follow Mark Wiens on youtube and that guy's video makes me wanna take the next flight out to delhi and have some chane bhature / gol gappe / thali's and all that . My stomach would be messed to no ends but hey. it'd be worth it

He wrote a book on Delhi as well no kidding,he loved it there and pretty great i agree, they also have a good fusion scene, heard of Tandoori momos(dumplings) remarkable thing.

The only issue I have with Delhi is ,its pretty rude except the street food vendors surprisingly polite.

No I haven't been to Delhi for more than a decade. but I'v heard there are various types of dumplings and sauces and all. The street food scene there has been quite vibrant since forever. I haven't read his book but his videos are just mouth watering

He does have good videos, saw his whole European tour ,I'm a vegetarian but like the way he goes on about it.Apparently got a kid now and he shares his videos somewhat late.

Show me a picture of this afghani burger

Doesn't seem so appetising with the overload of fries lmao more like a fries wrap then anything else. But does it tastes alright have you had it? does the bread itself taste really nice? that should be the most important and tasteful ingredient from the afghan perspective

Yeah, I've tried it, it tastes great but I'm not crazy about it tbh. Prefer a good chicken shawarma over this.

What is the place that offers the best Afghani Burgers in Isb? I've tried them in Bahria Town at Munnu's Afghani Burger (pretty popular in the area) but didn't really like it. Maybe because I don't like sausages.

Was a big fan of Najeeb but Munno's in Bahria has surpassed him IMO - much cleaner.

Najeeb's in F-10 is probably the most popular and well known one but it's not that different from Munnu's tbh.

Red Devil managed to find some pics online,

You can't see the chicken inside as there is salad on top of it but look at the bread, it tastes even better!

Will give them a shot. I'm a forever Muchies Roll Paratha fan though. Nothing tops that. New things came and left but nothing will beat the Roll. Not the Shawarma, not an arabian sandwich and not this Afghani burger. :p

It's soft on the inside and the outside is incredibly crunchy, crispy; similar to stuffed crust. I will make a video of myself eating it so you can see how scrumptious it is :ronaldo

Try the ones in G-9/4 bro. Also the one in F-10.

It does to me. Is the idea of certain things, such as choice of food and what looks appealing or otherwise, being subjective alien to you? Onions are a big no-no for me and I make it a point to order burgers etc. without onions and if the order gets messed up I wouldn't so much as touch them. There's a reason I've been spending more on eating out in a week than most of my colleagues do on food in a month and that has to do with our idiotic chef's love affair with onions. Cabbage I don't mind though but cabbage in an Afghani burger is like chicken tandoori with Sushi.

One of three in G-9/4 market is GOLD. Did you try all 3 ?

I have, a long time ago though. Most of the time, if I want an Afghani burger, Najib is where I go. The gulf in quality between them and the others is huge and F-10 is closer to me than G-9 anyway.

Definitely not, but the idea of calling any sort of food "vile" to look at is alien to me and I rather keep it that way. Well the next time someone accidentally puts some onions in there for you, just make sure you don't throw it away but give it to any homeless or a needy person around. They'd appreciate that quite a bit even though it may not be a perfect presentation.

Yeah, spare me the lecture.

Btw why Afgani burger isn't famous in other big cities like Lahore, Karachi and Faisalabad (I have lived in these three cities for few months each). Is it because there arent many Afganis there?

That's not an afghani burger! it's a Turkish Chicken Shawarma! head to a decent Turkish place for such snacks and with regards to afghani cuisine try to nab their naan breads and shami kebabs they make them best

The food has potential, only if the sauces are corrected. Problem is its very dry and tasteless without a good sauce

the reason its popular is because its the only clean food one could afford at cheap rates.

Collage students dont have money on them, thus its popular with them this food.

Yeh, i also buy from Bahria town Munnus.

The Afghani Burgers popularity is on the rise in islamabad because of its cheap rates.

Food in Pindi and Islamabad is very pricey and not even good

I think it depends if food in Lahore, Karachi or Faisalabad is cheap or not. If its cheap, then dont think people would buy an Afghani burger.

and yes, Afghanis make them.

Food in Islamabad is very good if you have an open mind and aren't one of those pretentious snobs who think that anyone who likes anything other than Pakistani food is a pretentious snob. The variety is great, as is the quality. Pindi is a hole and a cultural wasteland, not to mention right next to Islamabad where all the good restaurants etc prefer to set up shop, so it's not surprising that food there isn't great.

Islamabad food isn't as good as their prices are listed.

the prices are wayyy high.

ofcourse there are fine dine restaurants which not only serve good food but deserve to have high rates due to being fine dine like saidpur villiages des pardes.

But there isn't a cheap meal for collage students.

There was a time Munchies had a magnificent Shawarma. But over the years their quality has dropped.
I have eaten savour alot.

There arn't that many options available.

Pindi is indeed a dump.

That's because Islamabad is an expensive place in general. Prices are high relative to other cities but they're about par for the course by local standards. Property prices and rents dictate the cost of living in any given city and rents in ISB are extortionate which is why cost of living, including food, is high. That doesn't mean the food is bad.

fine dine is separate.

there arn't that many cheap meal options(hygienic). Every meal is above the 500 margin.

The food isn't as good as their price. The food is bad. You have to pay 600 for 4 kababs its insane.

So your issue is with prices, not quality. Forget fine dining, you can get pretty much anything in ISB that you can in LHE or KHI, it's just going to cost more which is understandable since ISB is a more expensive place but income levels are also significantly higher than in other cities on average.

Fries in a bun with a bit of meat and sauce. It seems like an afghani version of a chip butty with a bit of meat.

I have found the best afghani burger

sufra.

located in bahria phase 2. near baba jani mart

Then you should say it is the best thing for a budget, and across the board in Pakistan the best thing on low budget is the bun kabab or the paratha roll

Can't hold a candle to the King of Falafel Chicken over Rice in NYC.

Bun kebab has lost it. Because you never know if the meat they use for shami kebab is clean or not.

The original Paratha roll were great. But then came hot and spicy and they ruined it. Paratha rolls jsut make you sick now.

You could probably pick up something like it from a doner kebab/pizza joint in the UK. Although the 'burger' looks more like a naan bread in the image shown.
