Afghanistan with their experienced players back in the squad will look to make most of the favourable conditions in Bangladesh and with Super League points at stake, both teams will be eyeing some crucial wins.

Overview

Bangladesh vs Afghanistan, first ODI

Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chattogram
23 February, 11:00 AM LOCAL

The three-match ODI series beginning in Chattogram is expected to be an even-sided contest with both teams playing for the coveted ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League points. While Bangladesh sit strong on the second spot with 80 points, Afghanistan are sixth with 60 points.

Bangladesh will be playing their first ODI in 2022 as their last stint came against Zimbabwe in July 2021, a series they won 3-0.

The likes of Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan, Mahmud Ullah and Mushfiqur Rahim will be expected to play significant roles in the batting department whereas the bowling department will mostly be handled by Shakib, Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed. The hosts have also included four uncapped players (Ebadot Hossain, Nasum Ahmed, Yasir Ali and Mahmudul Hasan Joy) in the squad and it will be interesting to see how they balance experience with opportunity to challenge Afghanistan.

The visiting players and some staff members had tested positive for Covid, putting the entire series in threat. However, after being kept in isolation, all of the players tested negative, allowing the series to be scheduled on time.

Afghanistan has always been a team that has stood up because of their team effort, and this has helped the team in making significant progress in international cricket. Their recent 3-0 win in ODIs against Netherland is also proof of the fact that they cannot be underestimated, especially in a place like Bangladesh which has spin favorable conditions. Bangladesh batters would undoubtedly be challenged by the presence of the spin trio of Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman in the squad.

Remember the last time:

The last time both teams faced off in an ODI match was at the 2019 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup. Shakib claimed five wickets after scoring a gritty half-century in the first innings, while Bangladesh’s wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim had scored a brilliant 83 off 87 to set up a total of 262/7 in 50 overs.

Afghanistan had started well in chase but Shakib's match-winning performance helped Bangladesh beat Afghanistan by 62 runs.

What they said:

Tamim Iqbal: "Certainly we are playing [ODIs] after a while, but everyone is excited because this is one of our favourite formats. We have to do well here because we have got a couple of ODIs this year that was not there because of the T20 World Cup. We have done well against them in ODIs and to get back into the rhythm is the main thing and everyone is playing and having good mental space."

Hashmatullah Shahidi: "To be honest, we think about the whole team. We plan for everyone. We know their strength and weak points. We are working on it. I care about our strengths, our boys, my team. We have a good team here. I have confidence in all our departments."

Afghanistan has surpassed Bangladesh in all aspects. Dooms day for us

BPL has shown us that our batters aren't capable of dominating any quality bowling

very good performance from Afganis...naveed ul haq is not playing and they have unearth a new pacer. Their batting seems to be getting better with Spin riches i am actually jealous off.

I think in a year or two they will be above Pak, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh

114 runs are needed from 27 overs.

This is doable but Afghans are still favorites.

solid comeback from BD but RK still got 3 overs left. Should be interesting.

29 needed from 30.

All the talk about young talent in Bangladesh. Its Afghanistan that actually has talent. If only they can get some calm middle order batsmen, they will be drubbing us every game, every series, everywhere.

Well done by the youngsters. Shouldn't have been this difficult.

Fantastic batting by Afif Hossain and Mehedi Hasan. An unbroken partnership of 174 runs after Bangladesh were 45/6

Healthy profit for Afghan guys for this match f...

I didn't think BD would win after being something like 50/6.

Well done, Afif and Mehidy.

One of the best partnership to win the game for BD in ODI history. Congrats to BD.

Afghanistan batsman need to find some shame and start performing. Your bowlers cannot work miracles everytime.

215 was a pathetic target.

Afif Hossain, Mehidy Hasan power Bangladesh to a dream chase

After being reduced to 45/6, Afif Hossain and Mehidy Hasan shared a record partnership to guide their side to a dream victory over Afghanistan.

The Bangladesh duo recorded the second-highest partnership for the seventh wicket in men's ODIs, stitching a match-winning 174*. From what looked like Afghanistan's game at one stage when they had reduced Bangladesh to 45/6 in 11.2 overs, Afif and Mehidy completely changed the script, helping Bangladesh seal a dream win by four wickets.

With this victory, Bangladesh consolidated their second position on the ICC Men's Cricket World cup Super League standings, sitting comfortably with 90 points, only behind England.

Chasing 216, Bangladesh got off to a shocking start. Fazalhaq Farooqi started the onslaught with a double-wicket over, sending the hosts’ openers Tamim Iqbal (8) and Liton Das (1) back to the hut in the third over.

The Afghanistan pacer repeated the feat in his next over as he sent back two more Bangladesh batters. He trapped the experienced Mushfiqur Rahim in front for 3 on the first ball of the fifth over, and struck again on the last ball of the over with the wicket of Yasir Ali, who walked back without getting off the mark.

Bangladesh were 18/4 in five overs. Nothing was going the hosts’ way as they soon lost the prized scalp of Shakib Al Hasan when Mujeeb Ur Rahman has him bowled for 10. They lost another big wicket, with Rashid Khan claiming his first wicket of the match, sending Mahmud Ullah back for 8.

Afghanistan had reduced Bangladesh to 45/6 in just 11.2 overs, with victory in clear sight. However, the two new batters Afif and Mehidy had other plans. Slowly, steadily and then all at once they took the game away from Afghanistan.

The duo stitched a match-defining century partnership, with Afif making an impressive 93* from 115 while Mehidy contributed with a gritty 81* from 120 balls.

Earlier, Afghanistan won the toss and opted to bat first. They lost their opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz early in the third over with Mustafizur Rahman drawing the first blood for Bangladesh. In an attempt to go big, the Afghanistan opener skied the ball towards mid-on where Tamim completed the catch comfortably.

Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmat Shah then batted with caution and steadied the innings. After settling in at the crease, Ibrahim struck Taskin Ahmed for a six and a four on back-to-back balls. Shah also struck a couple of fine boundaries off Shakib. Their 45-run partnership came to end when Shoriful Islam struck in the 14th over to remove Ibrahim for 19.

After a few overs Shah also fell for 34 while Afghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi fell after making 28 from 43. Bangladesh bowlers kept the tourists' batters in check, with regular wickets. It was Najibullah Zadran who played a crucial knock for Afghanistan. He stayed at the crease till the 48th over, top-scoring for his team with 67 runs from 84 balls.

Mohammad Nabi (20) and Gulbadin Naib (17) were the other two batters to have made runs in double-digits as the rest of the lineup crumbled.

Well then, saw the highlights. This match reminds me of the match you guys won against NZ in the Champion's trophy where Shakib and I can't remember who got twin 100 to win from the brink of defeat. But this one, considering the young guns won you guys the game, would probably help instill self-confidence.

Afg's pace bowler Farooqi guy, great bowling.

Bangladesh's journey to the top of CWCSL

Bangladesh have climbed atop the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League standings after their 88-run win over Afghanistan in Chattogram.

Bangladesh won their 10th game in the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League 2020-23 out of 14, taking their point tally to 100 with a net run rate of 0.422. They go past England, who currently occupy the second spot with 95 points. They also become the first team to breach the 100-point mark in the CWCSL.

The Tigers beat Afghanistan in the second ODI of the three-match series by 88 runs, taking an unassailable 2-0 series lead at home. Liton Das (136) and Mushfiqur Rahim (86) were the stars of the show with the bat, posting a daunting target of 307 for Afghanistan to chase down.

Afghanistan fought valiantly through half-centuries from Rahmat Shah and Najibullah Zadran but the target proved to be too steep for the visitors.

Bangladesh have been a force to reckon with so far in the CWCSL, especially at home where they have won seven of their eight games. Their only series loss in the Super League has come away from home, where they were swept 3-0 in New Zealand.

BANGLADESH'S CWCSL JOURNEY SO FAR
Bangladesh 3-0 West Indies

Bangladesh's CWCSL journey started out on a bright note with a 3-0 series win over West Indies in January 2021. The Tigers were absolutely dominant in the series, with West Indies failing to cross the 200-run mark in all three games.

In the first two matches, the visitors were bowled out for 122 and 148, with the spinners wreaking havoc. In the third match, when Bangladesh batted first, fifties from Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmud Ullah helped them post a huge target of 298, which were 120 runs too many for West Indies.

Shakib Al Hasan, who returned to ODI cricket after a gap of two years, did not miss a beat as he was named Player of the Series for 113 runs and six wickets.

New Zealand 3-0 Bangladesh

Bangladesh faltered in their first outing away from home – they were blanked by New Zealand in March 2021.

They were beaten convincingly in the first ODI where they were all out for 131, but put up a better performance in the second game. They still came up short, with Tom Latham century. They suffered a heavy 164-run loss in the final ODI.

Bangladesh 2-1 Sri Lanka

It did not take long for Bangladesh to bounce back. They registered yet another series win at home, this time against neighbours Sri Lanka.

Mushfiqur Rahim was the architect of their wins in the first two games, with scores of 84 and 125. Sri Lanka were beaten in the first and second ODIs by 33 and 103 runs respectively. They tasted defeat in the final ODI by 97 runs, which has been their only loss at home so far in the CWCSL.

Zimbabwe 0-3 Bangladesh

The Bangladesh juggernaut showed no signs of stopping when they travelled to Zimbabwe for a three-match series. A century by Liton Das and a fifer from Shakib Al Hasan helped them register a dominant 155-run win.

They were made to sweat in the second game, where they found themselves reduced to 145/6 chasing 241. Shakib bailed them out of trouble, batting through till the end to finish on 96* and Zimbabwe were beaten by three wickets in the last over.

Bangladesh were set a target of 299 in the final game, but a Tamim Iqbal ton and some brilliant finishing by Nurul Hasan and Afif Hossain got them home with an over to spare, thus completing their third CWCSL series win.

Bangladesh have three CWCSL series remaining after the completion of the current series against Afghanistan, where they are set to face South Africa (away), Ireland (away) and England (home). With 10 wins out of 14, they have put themselves in a strong position for automatic qualification for the 2023 World Cup.

The CWCSL 2020-23 will determine which teams qualify for the 2023 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in India. Apart from India, who qualify for the World Cup as hosts, the top 7 teams from the CWCSL will qualify directly for the tournament while the remaining teams will have to go through Qualifier tournaments to book a spot in the final group stages.

Afghanistan won by 7 wkts

After bowling out Bangladesh for 192, Afghanistan chased down the total effortlessly with seven wickets and 59 balls to spare. The win takes them to the No.4 spot in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League Table.

Chasing a 193-run target, Afghanistan's openers got off to a terrific start, displaying good form and picking boundaries right from the start of their innings. Openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Riaz Hassan added 57 runs in the first 10 overs and continued to carry on the momentum forward.

Bangladesh knew they needed to do something special to defend the total, so they brought in the spinners early. Although the plan didn't work at the start, Shakib Al Hasan managed to break the 79-run opening partnership in the 16th over, stumping out Riaz Hassan for 35. Rahmanullah Gurbaz was joined in the middle by Rahmat Shah, and the two continued to play sensibly, laying the foundation for an easy run chase.

Gurbaz, who was lucky to have gotten three lifelines, made full use of the reprieves as he got to his third ODI century.

Both the batters approached the target with the right mindset and picked boundaries at the right time. While Gurbaz slowly approached his third century, the handy knock of 67 balls 47 from Rahmat Shah came to an end in the 36th over when Mehidy Hasan Miraz got the better of him.

Mehidy got another in his very next over, dismissing Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi (2) after he had survived a leg-before wicket appeal off the previous delivery.

However, Gurbaz (106* off 110) soon brought up his century in the 39th over, finishing the chase in 40.1 overs and taking the last ODI by seven wickets.

Earlier in the day, Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal opted to bat first after winning the toss. Bangladesh's openers got off to a good start, scoring 43 runs in the first ten overs. Liton Das, who had made a brilliant century in the second ODI, continued his good form but Iqbal, who did have a good run in this series, once again fell prey to an inswinger of Fazalhaq Farooqi.

Shakib Al Hasan joined the Das in the middle and both the batters slowly started building a foundation of a good finish. Shakib took his time to settle in the middle while Liton kept ticking the scoreboard. They brought up a half-century partnership before Shakib played on and lost his wicket for 30, reducing Bangladesh to 104/2 in 21.2 overs.

Mushfiqur Rahim walked out to bat and joined Liton Das in the middle but couldn't replicate their heroics from the previous game. Rashid Khan picked Mushfiqur's wicket at the ideal time and followed it up with another wicket of Yasir Ali (1) to put Bangladesh under pressure.

The turning point came when Mohammad Nabi sent Das back to the pavilion in 36th over. Liton (86 off 113) top-edged a full-length delivery off Nabi and Gulbadin Naib did the rest to take a brilliant catch running forward from long-on.

Bangladesh lost the momentum and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Atif Hossain and Mehidy Hasan, stars of the first ODI also couldn't last long and lost their wickets early. Mahmudullah (29* off 53) tried anchoring the innings from the other end but Afghanistan spinners were on a roll as they kept taking wickets. Some poor running between the wickets from batters saw Bangladesh getting bowled out on 192 in 46.5 overs.

Liton Das (60) and Nasum Ahmed (4/10) played starring roles as Bangladesh beat Afghanistan by 61 runs to go 1-0 up in the series.

Having opted to bat first in the opening game of the series, Bangladesh were pegged back by early wickets inside the Powerplay. Fazalhaq Farooqi continued from where he left off in the ODIs, trapping opener Mohammad Naim in front of the stumps with a brilliant inswinging yorker. Initially given not out, DRS came to Afghanistan's rescue as the tracker showed three reds to bring an end to Naim's short stay.

Munim Shahriar tried to counter-attack, smashing consecutive fours off Mujeeb Ur Rahman's bowling, but the introduction of Rashid Khan became his undoing, as he too was adjudged leg before wicket.

Shakib Al Hasan's stay at the crease didn't last long either, but Liton Das at the other end kept the scoreboard ticking for Bangladesh. He stitched a crucial 33-run stand with skipper Mahmud Ullah in just 19 balls to give some much-needed impetus to the innings.

His sublime touch with the bat continued, as he posted his third 50+ score of the tour so far. Afif Hossain and him added 46 runs for the fifth wicket to help Bangladesh build towards posting a respectable total.

Das eventually fell to Farooqi for 60, after which Afghanistan fought back to restrict Bangladesh to 155/8.
Nasum Ahmed ran riot with the ball early on, scalping four wickets in his three overs. Rahmanullah Gurbaz made room to cut over the field on the offside but the miscued slash went into the hands Yasir Ali at cover-point. In his next over, Ahmed removed the dangerous Hazratullah Zazai and Darwish Rasooli before scalping Karim Janat in his third over, finishing the Powerplay with dream figures of 4/7.

Najibullah Zadran and Mohammad Nabi were cautious in their approach and bailed Afghanistan out of trouble. However, with the run-rate climbing over 10 runs an over at the halfway point, the 37-run partnership eventually came to an end when Nabi holed in the deep trying to up the ante.

Zadran too would follow suit, going for a hit but only finding a leading-edge as Shakib struck again to bring an end to his knock of 27.

Azmatullah Omarzai tried his best (20 off 18) but perished Mustafizur and Rashid Khan also contributed 1 run to the cause as the match was slipping away from the visitors.

They would eventually fall short by 61 runs, being bowled out on 94 in only 17.4 overs as the hosts went 1-0 up in the series.

This is the poorest T20 performance I have ever seen from Afghanistan. They normally do quite well in T20 format.

Well done, Bangladesh.

Afghan rely to much on there spinners to win every match

Problem you have is the spinners play T20 all over the world so are now getting worked out

Batsmen as well as pacers need to support the team more otherwise we will see a decline in results going forward

BAN Vs AFG, 2nd T20I: Afghanistan Beat Bangladesh By 8 Wickets To Draw Series

Afghanistan registered a big win against Bangladesh to end their tour on a high.

Chasing Bangladesh's 115/9, Afghanistan reached the target in 17.4 overs. Hazratullah Zazai hit 59 not out while Azmatullah Omarzai took 3/22.

Opener Hazratullah Zazai hit a half-century as Afghanistan beat Bangladesh by eight wickets in the second and final cricket Twenty20 to draw the series 1-1 in Dhaka on Saturday.

Afghanistan pulled off a massive win against Bangladesh in their second and final T20 International match to end the tour on a high. After losing the ODIs 1-2, the visitors needed a strong reply in the T20s, but they lost the opener by 61 runs on Thursday.

Two days later, Afghanistan played like a different team, a team that can beat any side.

Now, at least they will return home with some consolation after a big win against Bangladesh.

After losing the toss, Afghanistan restricted the hosts to 115/9 with pacers Fazalhaq Farooqi and Azmatullah Omarzai taking three wickets each at Shere Bangla National Stadium.

Opener Hazratullah Zazai then hit an unbeaten 59 off 45 with Darwish Rasooli sealing the win with a six. Usman Ghani scored a well-paced 47 off 48 also.
