Afghanistan have named two 16-member squads for their white-ball tour of Zimbabwe, which begins on 4 June.

The two teams will first play three ODIs, which form a part of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League. Afghanistan are currently fifth on the CWCSL table with 70 points, while Zimbabwe are 12th with just 35 points.

The ODI series will be followed by three T20Is, beginning 11 June. All matches will be played at the Harare Sports Club.

Twenty-four-year-old Zia-ur-Rahman Akbar, who was the leading wicket-taker in the Green Afghanistan One-Day Cup, has got his maiden call-up. The left-arm spinner picked up 14 wickets in the tournament in just five matches in his team Hindukush Strikers' winning campaign.

All-rounder Gulbadin Naib, who was a part of the Afghanistan squad that played the ODI series against Bangladesh in February this year, has been left out. Left-arm spinner Noor Ahmad and medium-pacer Nijat Masoud have been named as reserves.

Missing from the T20I list is off-spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who is named in the ODI squad and was a part of the T20Is against Bangladesh. Joining him is 21-year-old leg-spinner Qais Ahmad. They have been replaced by Noor Ahmad and right-handed batter Ihsanullah Janat.

Left-arm wrist-spinner Zahir Khan and the left-arm fast bowler Sayed Ahmad Shirzad are the reserves.

Afghanistan have announced that Umar Gul is the new bowling coach of the national men’s cricket team.

The former Pakistan international will begin his new role during the white-ball tour of Zimbabwe in June, when Afghanistan will play three ODIs followed by a further trio of T20Is in Harare.

Gul’s appointment comes after a successful stint as a bowling consultant at an Afghanistan’s training camp in April.

The 39-year-old made 237 international appearances for Pakistan across formats, making a particularly notable impact in the white-ball game, taking 179 wickets in 130 ODI matches and bagging 85 in 60 T20Is with a miserly career economy of 7.19.

Gul was the top wicket taker at the ICC T20 Cricket World Cups in both 2007 and 2009, and is seventh in the all-time list for wicket-takers in T20 Internationals.

Of the six players above him, only Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan can better Gul’s average of 16.97 or strike rate of 14.1.

Gul’s first job will be to steer Afghanistan’s bowlers through a three-match ICC Cricket World Cup Super League series against Zimbabwe as they push towards automatic qualification for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023.

Afghanistan are fifth in the Super League Standings having won seven of their nine matches to-date, while opponents Zimbabwe are above only Netherlands at the foot of the table.

A three-match T20I series follows the 50-over matches, with Afghanistan continuing their preparation towards the ICC T20 World Cup later this year, for which they are one of eight teams already confirmed in the Super 12.

ODI squad: Hashmatullah Shahidi (c), Rahmat Shah (vc), Azmatullah Omarzai, Farid Malik, Fazal Haq Farooqi, Ibrahim Zadran, Ikram Alikhail (wk), Mohammad Nabi, Mujib ur Rahman, Najibullah Zadran, Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Rashid Khan, Riaz Hassan, Shahidullah Kamal, Yamin Ahmadzai, Zia ur Rahman Akbar

Zimbabwe have named a 15-member squad for their upcoming ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League ODIs against Afghanistan, starting 4 June.

Zimbabwe's highest-ranking bowler on the MRF Tyres ICC Men's ODI Rankings list, Blessing Muzarabani, makes a return to the national side after coming back from the recently-concluded Indian Premier League.

The side will be led by Craig Ervine, and features eleven players from the squad that toured Sri Lanka in January for a three-match ODI contest, which the hosts won 2-1.

Two players could be in line for their ODI debuts: uncapped Clive Madande, a wicketkeeper-batter, who is yet to make his first international appearance, and Tanaka Chivanga, who made his T20I debut against Namibia last month.

Notable absentees are Richard Ngarava and Wellington Masakadza, who are recovering from lower back and right shoulder injuries respectively, while Tino Mutombodzi has failed to make a cut this time. Sean Williams is still on compassionate leave, granted to him by Zimbabwe Cricket.

Zimbabwe are currently placed at No.12 on the CWCSL standings, only above Netherlands, with 35 points in 12 matches. Their opposition, Afghanistan, are among the top teams – sitting at No.5 with 70 points.

The three matches are slated for 4, 6 and 9 June at the Harare Sports Club.

Squad: Craig Ervine (c), Ryan Burl, Regis Chakabva, Tendai Chatara, Tanaka Chivanga, Luke Jongwe, Takudzwanashe Kaitano, Clive Madande, Wesley Madhevere, Blessing Muzarabani, Dion Myers, Ainsley Ndlovu, Sikandar Raza, Milton Shumba, Donald Tiripano

Afghanistan moved up to the third spot above India in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League standings with a 60-run win over Zimbabwe in the first ODI.

After winning the toss, Zimbabwe opted to bowl first and handed debut caps to Tanaka Chivanga and Innocent Kaia. The decision to bowl first paid immediate dividends with the quicks wickets of the Afghanistan openers, before Hasmatullah and Rahmat came to the rescue of the visitors.

Chasing 277, Zimbabwe lost Regis Chakbva early in the chase, but Innocent Kaia and skipper Craig Ervine kept the chase under control. However, they lost wickets in the middle overs and had half their side back in the hut within the 32nd over.

Sikandar Raza stood tall from one end and continued to take Zimbabwe closer to the total. But Rashid Khan dismissed Raza at the right time to end Zimbabwe’s hopes of a win. Afghanistan bowlers then ran through Zimbabwe’s tail and restricted them to 216 in 50 overs to win the first ODI by 60 runs.

Mohammad Nabi spins a web

Off-spinner Mohammad Nabi was in the mood in Harare, bamboozling the Zimbabwe batters in his brilliant spell that ended with figures of 4/34. On a surface where Zimbabwe spinners failed to pick wickets, Nabi led the Afghanistan attack and dismantled the opposition.

His first scalp was Wesely Madhevere, who gave a simple return catch to Rabi for 11. Set batter Innocent Kaia was then done by the flight as Nabi tossed up the delivery to trap him in front of the stumps 39.

Nabi then dismissed Milton Shuba on 5 before dismissing Ryan Burl on 13 in his final over.

Hashmatullah, Rahmat make Zimbabwe bowlers toil in middle overs

Afghanistan got off to a shaky start but skipper Hasmatullah Shahidi (88) and Rahmat Saha (96) stitched up a 181-run partnership for the third wicket. The batters laid the foundation for flourish in the end, batting sensibly from the start. They rotated the strike continuously and once set, they soon started finding the boundaries. Rahmat in 36th over brought up his half-century and Hashmatullah followed it up with his half-century in the very next over.

The batters then switched gears and started attacking; Rahmat immediately after his fifty collected a six and a four in Chivanga’s over. Hashmatullah then hit a flurry of boundaries and Afghanistan reached the 200 mark in the 43rd over.

The batters continued to collect runs quickly but lost their wickets to Muzarbani, falling short of their individual centuries.

Muzarbani delivers at crucial times for Zimbabwe

Pacer Blessing Muzarbani was the pick of the bowlers for Zimbabwe as he finished with the bowling figures of 4 for 52.

Muzarbani first dismissed opener Ibrahim Zadran with the new ball before scalping Rahmat Shah on 94 to end the excellent third-wicket partnership of 181 runs. He followed it up with another wicket by getting another set batter Hasmatullah Shahidi on 88 and then piled more pressure on Afghanistan by picking up the important wicket of Mohamad Nabi on 10.

Rashid continues his fine form

Three quick wickets of Rahmat Shah, Hamatullah Shahidi and Mohammad Nabi in the final overs put Afgnaistan under pressure. However, Rashid Khan came to the rescue and played a fiery knock of 39 runs in 17 balls. He came out to bat in the 47th over and smashed two sixes and four boundaries to help Afghanistan finish at 276/5.

With the ball in hand, Rashid kept the batters in check as he took two wickets and conceded only 39 runs in his spell. He first took the crucial wicket of Sikander Raza on 67, who was the highest scorer for Zimbabwe. In his final over, Rashid dismissed Donald Tripano on 15.

A record 195-run stand between Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmat Shah helped Afghanistan to a comprehensive eight-wicket victory against Zimbabwe in the second ODI. They take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.

The victory has not only helped Afghanistan seal the series but also consolidated their position in the top half of the CWCSL table.

At 4/1 after the first over, Zimbabwe needed to regroup early and make the most of Afghanistan's decision of sending them in to bat first. Opener Innocent Kaia took it upon himself to stabilise the hosts' innings. Kaia and Craig Ervine batted cautiously and added 43 runs for the second wicket but with Ervine gone at the beginning of the 13th over and Wesley Madhevere perishing soon, the job of rebuilding fell back on Kaia again.

Together with Sikandar Raza he stitched a solid 67-run stand and scored a 74-ball 63 to lay the foundation of a decent total.

Fareed Ahmad leads Afghan bowlers

Left-arm pacer Fareed Ahmad was instrumental in Afghanistan restricting Zimbabwe to just 228. Ahmad first broke the Ervine-Kaia stand, trapping the Zimbabwe skipper for 32 and reviewing successfully.

He then got the important wicket of Kaia, having him caught behind in the 32nd over. His third wicket was that of Milton Shumba, who could only manage 1 run. He finished with figures of 3/56 in his 10 overs and was ably supported by Mohammad Nabi (2/31), Fazalhaq Farooqi (2/34) and Rashid Khan (2/56).

The record partnership

Afghanistan lost Rahmanullah Gurbaz in the third over in the chase of 229. But that wicket was just one tiny hiccup in their otherwise smooth batting performance. Both Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmat Shah look unflustered as they propelled Afghanistan. Little bothered them as Zimbabwe failed to create any real chances. They were unhurried in the chase, taking no unnecessary risks but taking full advantage of the poor deliveries to score their shots.

Their respective half-centuries did not take long to come as the second-wicket stand kept ballooning. Ibrahim Zadran brought up his maiden ODI hundred in just his fourth match. He scored an unbeaten 120, studded with 16 fours.

Rahmat Shah smashed a 116-ball 88 and fell when Afghanistan needed just 17 runs to win. They eventually got there in the 45th over.

With 10 more CWCSL points, Afghanistan take their total points up to 90. While they are still at No.3 on the table, they are just five points behind the No.2 England. A clean sweep in the series will see them leapfrog England to the second position and just 20 points behind first-ranked Bangladesh.

With 10 losses in 14 games now, Zimbabwe continue languishing at the 13th spot, just above the Netherlands.

In the MRF Tyres ICC Men's ODI Rankings, Afghanistan remain at No.10 but have gained one rating point, going from 67 to 68. Zimbabwe, meanwhile, have lost one rating point.

Does anyone of the boards make any money out of these tours?

Not much, Dafabet is sponsor and they only sponsor where others don't want to spend money.

But these matches count in direct qualification for the ODI World Cup, so they are very important.

Najibullah Zadran slammed a six off the second ball of the final over to give Afghanistan a six-wicket win against Zimbabwe on Saturday after a thrilling run chase in the first of three Twenty20 internationals. The dramatic climax seemed unlikely with 10 overs gone as the tourists scored 83 without loss after Zimbabwe posted 159-8 in 20 overs at Harare Sports Club.

Ryan Burl then wreaked havoc with the ball, capturing the wickets of openers Hazratullah Zazai (45) and Rahmanullah Gurbaz (33) and Usman Ghani (1) within six balls.

A leading edge from Gurbaz led to a catch for wicketkeeper Regis Chakabva. Zazai followed one ball caught by Sikandar Raza at long on.

Burl claimed his third wicket off the final ball of the over as another Chakabva catch ended the Ghani's two-ball innings.

Batting at number five, Zadran stopped the rot but took time to regain the initiative and the tourists needed 60 runs from the final five overs to triumph.

The run rate gradually increased and when Blessing Muzurabani stepped up to bowl the final over, the Afghans required eight runs, and Zadran wasted no time getting them.

He hit two off the first delivery, then walloped his third six of a 25-ball stand to lift the Afghans to 160-4 and continue a successful tour after a 3-0 victory in a one-day international series.

Zadran, a 30-year-old left-hand batsman, struck two fours and three sixes in his unbeaten 41-minute stay at the crease.

Earlier, middle-order batsman Raza top scored with 45 for Zimbabwe on a hard, brown-grass, batting-friendly track.

Opener Wessley Madhevere (32) and Regis Chakabva (29) were the other Zimbabweans to make significant contributions while six of their teammates failed to reach 10.

Debutant Najit Masood, a right-arm medium pacer, was the most impressive Afghan bowler taking three wickets, including those of Raza and Chakabva.

Pakistan-born Raza, whose T20 batting average is a modest 13.4, was out to a brilliant catch at third man by Hazratullah Zazai having faced 31 deliveries and struck three fours and two sixes.

A googly from Rashid Khan spelt the end of Madhevere while a leading edge from Chakabva was caught at mid-off by captain Mohammad Nabi.

The remaining two T20 internationals will also be in Harare, on Sunday and Tuesday.
