Pakistan gear up for U19 tri-series final

Pakistan are all set to take on Afghanistan in the final of the U19 tri-series at the ICC Cricket Academy Ground on Tuesday. The toss will take place at 10am PKT, with the first ball of the final to be bowled at 10.30am PKT.

In the seven-match series, both finalists have played four matches each, winning three and losing one, while hosts UAE remained winless. The Saad Baig-led Pakistan side defeated Afghanistan by 13 runs in the two sides’ last encounter held on 20 November. However, Mahboob Khan-led Afghanistan secured a 100-run victory in their first match against Pakistan on 15 November.

Pakistan registered convincing victories in their two encounters against the hosts, winning by 10 wickets and 191 runs, respectively.

For Pakistan, the opening duo of Shahzaib Khan and Usman Khan has been in great form and have scored runs consistently. Left-handed Usman has amassed 306 runs from four matches at an average of 102, which included one century and three half-centuries. His fellow southpaw Shahzaib has accumulated 277 runs at an average of 92.33, which also includes one century and two half-centuries from four matches. Both the batters have also provided two century-run partnerships while opening, including an unbeaten 192-run stand against UAE on 13 November.

In the bowling unit, pacers Abdul Subhan, Ali Raza and Mohammad Ahmed have picked six wickets each, while Faham-ul-Haq has grabbed five wickets. Left-armer Ahmed is the only bowler to take a five-fer in the event, while Ali’s best figures of four for 57 came in a 13-run win against Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Hassan Khan has been ruled out of the final as well as the forthcoming ACC U19 Men’s Asia Cup, after the left-arm spinner injured his left ankle during a training session. Hassan’s replacement for the Asia Cup will be made in due course.

Saad Baig talking to PCB Digital on the eve of the tournament, said:

“We have performed well in the tournament, and now we look forward to doing well against Afghanistan in the final. The coaches have clearly defined the players’ roles, and they have responded positively in crucial situations, which has helped the team win matches in the competition.

“The tri-series has also given the players confidence to perform well in the upcoming Asia Cup.”

Pakistan U19 captain Saad Baig shared his thoughts and expectations with PCB Media ahead of the highly anticipated Tri-Series Final against Afghanistan U19:

"The preparation has been very good. Today, we had a practice session, and obviously, we have already played two matches, so we are hopeful to perform well in the final match as well."

"The team's momentum is excellent, and we are gelling well. The goal is to play with the same unity and determination as we did in the last match."

"Everyone has been given a specific role. For instance, Ali Raza, in the second spell, provided us with a breakthrough in the last match. Everyone knows their role, whether it’s bowling in a specific channel or executing the plan effectively."

"In the last match, we targeted them [Afghanistan] with a proper plan and succeeded. During practice, we prepare for different roles, like the fast bowlers having one role in the first spell and a different one in the second. We have different plans, and thankfully, we have executed them well."

"This Tri-Nation Series has been very important for us. The players have learned a lot, the team has developed unity and gelled together, and we have seen how players perform under pressure situations and enhance their performances."

"Our preparation is going very well. First, we aim to win the final, and after that, we will focus on the Asia Cup."

This is going to be a great contest. Pak u19 should win this.

Muhammad Ahmed can bowl up to 140k but only in first few overs and after that he slow down considerably. Why these players don't look after their fitness even at this level?

Toss Update:

Afghanistan have won the toss and are batting first against Pakistan

Fantastic start for pakistan u19...Ali Raza strikes

Afg U19 1/1

I am following live scores only. No live stream is available for this game, unfortunately.

Naveed khan is a good off spinner. I was highly impressed with him in u 19 World Cup. Pakistan should invest in him.

Would love to see if Asia Cup has live streaming , The pace bowlers this time are tall and very quick , They steams in and hit the deck hard and get good bounce.

they need to get rid of this guy Faisal Khan Shinozada. He is a good player. scoring runs heavily in this event.

11 wides bowled by Umar Zaib so far. That is something he needs to work on. That is not good

I am pretty sure all ASIA u 19s have live streams they always do.

Not sure why saad is trying part-timers here. Usman should not be bowling here

Go for the kill now. Afghans have already scored more than they should have

155/6

That is a good comeback from Afghan boys.

181/6 and still 8 overs there to bat. Score already good

Pakistan has just thrown this game away. 214/6 and still 5 overs there.

Afghans in good position.

Captain needs to be blamed for this. Congratulation Afghanistan for winning the tournament.

250 target how on earth have they managed that...does every team in the world bat deep apart from us.

This chase is not easy at all. Already 1 down for 31 runs in 9 overs.

Pathetic captaincy by saad, let them score 100 runs more than they should have.

Riazullah also gone.

Pak U19 are done here I guess. they are not chasing this score. 2/55 now

yep. Slower than a turtle

Strike rate of 71 overall and today even less than 50 LOL
indeed no awareness of the game. But without our openers in this tournament we would have lost top UAE. We are doomed as no talent what so ever why cant we borrow some from Afganistan surely that is an option :p

Pak lost by 22 runs. Talent is dry in Pakistan. Afghanistan side is more talented than Pakistan.

Haroon Arshad’s 59-ball 70 went in vain as Pakistan fell 21 runs short against Afghanistan in the final of the U19 tri-series on Tuesday evening at the ICC Academy in Dubai

Chasing 251 to win, the opening pair of Shahzaib Khan and Usman Khan couldn’t provide a solid start as Usman got out for eight with 11 runs on the board. Shahzaib was then joined by right-hand batter Mohammad Riazullah and the pair stitched a 44-run partnership for the second wicket before Riazullah was adjudged leg-before-wicket to Naseer Khan Maroofkhil for a 38-ball 21, which included two fours.

Captain Saad Baig (14, 22b, 1x6) was the next batter to return to the pavilion with score reading 87 for three in 24.5 overs. Shahzaib, who has scored one century and two half-centuries before today’s game, went on to score yet another half-century keeping the innings intact. He was dismissed for a 98-ball 53, smashing five boundaries.

Right-hand batter Haroon, in at No.5, and Farhan Yousaf got together and knitted a 51-run partnership for the fifth wicket before Farhan (29, 30b, 4x4s) was dismissed in the 40th over with 83 runs required off 64 balls. Haroon hit four boundaries and his stay at the crease was cut short by Nooristani Omarzai.

Pakistan could only add 31 runs for the last four wickets as they were bowled out for 229 with 12 balls to spare.

Earlier, after opting to bat first, Afghanistan slipped to 91 for six in 26 overs. At that juncture of the innings, Barkat Ibrahimzai and Nazifullah Amiri got together and knitted a 130-run partnership for the seventh wicket to take their team out of trouble.

Barkat top-scored for his side with a 90-ball 79, which included six fours and three sixes. Nazifullah scored a 60-ball 56, hitting five fours and two sixes. Afghanistan ended up scoring 250 for nine in their 50 overs.

For Pakistan, right-arm fast bowlers Ali Raza and Subhan bagged three wickets apiece, while Faham-ul-Haq and Umar Zaib snapped a wicket each.

Pakistan will now feature in the eight-team ACC U19 Men’s Asia Cup scheduled to take place in Dubai and Sharjah from 29 November to 8 December.

Scores in brief:

Final - Afghanistan beat Pakistan by 21 runs at the ICC Academy Ground

Afghanistan 250-9, 50 overs (Barkat Ibrahimzai 79, Nazifullah Amiri 56, Faisal Shinozada 41; Abdul Subhan 3-41, Ali Raza 3-61)

Pakistan 229 all out, 48 overs (Haroon Arshad 70, Shahzaib Khan 53, Farhan Yousuf 29, Muhammad Riazullah 21; Nooristani Omarzai 2-36, Naseer Khan Maroofkhil 2-38)

Haha! That's a very good point.

Anyway, they have been doing well at senior level too (won a series against South Africa recently).
They are on par if not better than us. They are producing natural talent unlike us. For them to go any better they will need better systems and that isn't happening because afterall they are our cousins and just as useless at creating proper systems

Scarcity of talent in Pakistan. It is just the fans don't accept the reality and keep having hopes with the ones who are either sitting on bench or not part of squad.

I have noticed that all our batters bat with a survival mentality and trying to use the pace of the bowler and trying to just push the ball in the gaps , it’s because they play on under prepared wickets where they have to bat with a survival mentality, batting is all about confidence and unless you start dominating the bowler from ball one you will actually get out sooner or later, Saad Baig is the only fearless batter in the lineup but sadly he is just not good enough to actually play in the XI other than him all batters are really timid, the only confident batter Ali Hasnain Badshah is not selected for unknown reasons. Other than him none of the batters in the youth tournament has a high batting strike rate and average.
Riaz Ullah is a good player of spin and really dominant one but sadly he can’t play anything over 130k as his reaction times are slow.

Saad threw this game away with his captaincy. you had then 80-90 runs for 6 and then they scored 250 that too in the final of an event. Pathetic. The batting is mediocre but the bowling has a bright light for Pakistan.

Well our pacers even though they are quick this time but they are not much accurate and definitely not skillful enough to pickup wickets , Saad tried all three pacers and Naveed but they didn't respond so he resort to part timers , yes agreed for a bit too long. But it's the skills of the bowlers which matters more here rather than captaincy.

This time collectively we probably have the quickest U19 bowlers in our history of U19 cricket but too bad they will not feature in Worldcup 2026 as they are already 19 now.
