"After this series, Babar & Rizwan will get a lot more respect from media & the nation": Shadab Khan

Shadab Khan, whilst speaking to media after the seven-wicket loss to Afghanistan:

“People criticise Babar and Rizwan regardless of whether they perform or not. There is always a sword hanging over them of strike rate. As a nation, we wanted youngsters to come in international cricket, as they were performing in PSL, so we thought they would play with a better strike rate"

“But finally, our nation will realize that experience matters and our seniors didn’t get the respect they deserved considering their performances. So after this series, they will get a lot more respect from media and the nation,”

Stating the truth.

Anyone who has played in the same team as Babar and Rizwan have their utmost respect for them. Why?

Individuals meddling by watching on TV should not be taken seriously especially the media. They're only running after ratings.

Like I said in another thread, the criticism on Babar and Rizwan has gone below the belt.

It was definitely a reality check for everyone who thought that we have better openers sitting on the bench as compared to Rizwan and Babar. I think not playing this series is going to help Babar Azam gain more confidence as a captain as well.

There you go

He’s clearly out there to just protect their supremacy

I don’t think so. He is simply saying the truth. However, I would still say that it was a good move not to play the senior players in this series. Youngsters need to get experience at International Level against good bowling attacks in tough conditions, even it comes at the expense of losing a series here or there.

It’s all about Babar and Rizwan it seems no matter what happens so let’s look at some facts.

There were actually 8 changes not just 2 including different batsmen with little or no international experience being asked to bat against spinners who excel in these conditions.

Consider that a full strength team almost lost to Afghanistan which with all the changes the result is not surprising as Afghanistan is better than some countries on spinning wickets and low scoring matches.

How would Babar and Rizwan do on these wickets the likelihood is strike rates in the 100-110 range based on the pitch conditions and what they’ve shown in the past batting when the pitches favour the bowlers.

What this does do is make them look good and when they inevitably return and make runs against B teams on flat wickets similar over the top praise will come but expect a lot lesser performance when Asia Cups World Cups are played.

If they wanted to try the younger batsmen a series at home on more favourable pitches was ideal not under these conditions as you can’t expect undercooked younger batsmen to perform well and express themselves with little experience of the pitches they are playing on.

Babar and Rizwan are very good no doubt. They deserve a lot of credit for their consistent performances undeterred by undue criticism by some really toxic fans and media. It’s ridiculous that non performers are hardly mentioned but these two are blamed for losses even when they are not part of the squad.
But cricket is played for team results not individuals image or anything. The decision to try new players was a good step towards building a stronger side.
Did Shadab talk about his own poor performance?

It’s starting to make sense why shadab batted first in both matches - to put the new openers under the sword

As a nation we need to stop this hero worship.

You need to build a modern team, not go gaga over some stats (that have big holes) of individuals and post pictures.

Can you imagine Jos Butler saying:

“After this series Ben Stokes will get a lot more respect from fans and media” after losing to Bangladesh?

Dude get on with it! Why are you trashing the players representing your country??

This is a terrible statement from Shadab. Basically saying that the debutants/new comers are not good enough. What confidence will this statement give to the team currently playing the series?

For Pakistan to advance, the following people cannot be trusted with leadership:

1. Babar Azam
2. Mohammad Rizwan
3. Shaheen Afridi
4. Shadab Khan

Side kicks

5. Mohammad Nawaz
6. Iftikhar Ahmed
7. Shan Masood

These 7 players need to be kept far away from any leadership roles

Lol this guy is somehow even worse captain than I thought.

His captaincy in PSl, especially the last group stage match of United, already exposed him badly.

He is even worse than Babar.

Now it's between Shaheen, Rizwan, and Imad. None are ideal, but all are much better than Shadab.

There you go

He’s clearly out there to just protect their supremacy

OMG! What am I hearing? Let's just throw the youngsters under the bus now shall we!

There was no need to bring these two into the conversation, wow what a fool.

Someone will else turn up and form a similar set up?..What then?

There is no hero worship, it’s just basic acknowledgment of facts.

Beggars cannot be choosers, when Pakistan gets better batsmen than Babar or Rizwan to open the innings and play at a better tempo consistently than both of them, they will themselves let go of their spot to maximize their chances of winning. No captain wants to lose and I’m quite certain Babar is no different.

Immature people here forget the reason Rizwan and Babar had to open was to accommodate for the numerous failures of Fakhar Zaman at the top. We also tried the nation’s hero Sharjeel Khan in one series in South Africa, where he bombed horribly and we went back to square one.

The likes of Saim and Haris need a lot of time to be ready for international cricket, simple as that.

Didn't think Babar commanded this sort of respect from his team mates. I for one am loving the sochna bhi mana hai mentality. Clear message to management, don't mess with the core!

Strange thing to say in the middle of the series and a slap in the face for the young guys who have been picked.

A more experienced and streetwise skipper would avoid such statements.

Lets see how true this is - results against NZ will be the main driver for this.

Totally agree, why bring up this, unless some journalist asked him to compare the seniors and youngsters, but even then he should have used different wording.

We won the last match and who knows if this was 5 match series, we might even have won it.

Rizwan really is a gem of Pakistan cricket. Mohammad Amir should take notes on how to tweet from him.

Says the guy who was desperate not to get rested in order to maintain his rankings

Afghanistan's spinners in T20Is are no push overs. There's no guarantees he would have performed so to question his intent of why he wanted to play is futile.

Horrible statement from someone who is captaining a national side. He is not there to prove how important Babar and Rizwan are for the team or to prove their replacements are worse. His job is to captain the team and try to win. When sending a second string team there is a chance that the results might not go your way but still teams take that risk to check out their options for the future. If Babar, Rizwan and Shaheen play all games till they retire Pakistan are never going to groom anyone to replace them.

This is a poor statement after losing a series. This is not the time to make such statements and this shows that Shadab isn't a leadership material. By that statement he also put down the young players who are trying to make a name by calling them not good enough.

Just for that statement alone he should never be a captain. He is there as a leader, not to convince why others are better options even though it is probably true. Not the best way to go about your business, this is a professional sport; Imad may have some attitude issues but he is bang on the friendship culture in the team

You got to be careful what you say publicly these days

This isn’t the Ramiz Raja “player empowerment” era anymore

Wonder when PCB will start briefing our guys on what to say in pressers - seems like a free for all with some of them. Say what comes to their minds.

It was a needless and strange statement from Shadab and one that was going to come back and haunt him.

Sometimes our players have no clue what to say and when to say it.

there was nothing wrong in the statement, it shows how the players back their captain..

Anyways guys like Sheikh Shakeel didnt take this lightly

If you see nothing wrong with this, I’m afraid there is something wrong with your understanding of how cricket works

Yep and it's all because Shadab is part of Misbah's clique.

Statements like this would ensure Cat A central contracts under Wasim Khan/Ramiz Raja era

Well those are two different eras. But at any rate, Najam Sethi's latest stint feels like a breath of fresh air so far. Especially after the Ramiz era.

Well it looks like they've got respect from the selectors who have hurriedly recalled them after resting them for the series against Afghanistan.
