Wasn’t everyone praising Shan until 2 days ago?
They were brilliant this year. If not for the break due to covid they would have stormed to the title in all likelihood the form they were in earlier in the year.
True they have some old players but they performed well on the whole and justified the faith in them. Shan was the best captain of the tournament and though he’s an average t20 player he certainly performed well to be retained.
Though I agree with you on the fact that they need to get some young players in their squad . . there is a lot of heavy lifting from old players (probably caused their losses) . .
but just out of curiosity, what makes you say that? They topped the league . . they were very well lead both on and off the field (at least in my opinion) . . from the get go, no one game them a chance because of their old squad, lack of quality, captain masood . in fact, most analysts called them the worst side in the tournament . . which was probably true too . . howeever - they were clinical . .
So I don't quite understand your comment . . seems like a comment for a team that has been hapless through the tournament

I do feel Shan has executed some of the backroom (data-driven) decisions pretty well and though Multan couldn’t find that momentum in the playoffs, he did lead them to the top of the rankings table. I also feel they made a mistake demoting him to number 3 in the batting order, his natural position is as opener where he previously performed well anchoring the innings in a Babar type role.
At 3, he’s way too slow and that showed today. I also feel that this decision to demote him was a data-driven one as Adam Lyth is the fastest scorer in the powerplay in the world, indicating they wanted him to open with Zeeshan Ashraf to get them going quickly, though I feel the tactical error was pairing Lyth with Ashraf instead of Shan.
Some things we can maybe point out in retrospect, but I thought Shan did well throughout most of the tournament and fell victim to a blunder in these last two matches (which were still competitive).
As far as retaining or replacing him goes, I think since Multan will likely phase out Afridi, Irfan, and maybe Tanvir (though Tahir will probably stick around another year) they’ll need an old face present in Shan who consolidates the dressing room. Tactically, go back to a Zeeshan-Shan or Lyth-Shan pairing. As long as Shan can consistently score 30-40 runs at 130 strike rate, he’ll have done his job with Lyth or Zeeshan at the other end there to perform aggressor.
Topping the table means nothing if you don't win the tournament.
There are obvious issues with the squad in that it needs an injection of youth and a captain who leads from the front and is a T20 cricketer.

I would also like to add that Multan fell victim to a collapsing middle order in Afridi and Bopara, while Khushdil could have showed more fight at the end if he was better with his offside strokes. Pinning it on Shan’s innings would be unfair, as Multan were in the hunt throughout until that collapse of wickets following Shan’s dismissal. Another 10 runs from Bopara and a six or two for Afridi, and Multan could have taken this game home.
Fair point on the injection of youth . . I agree! Have a lot of players who are way past their use by date . .
I thought they were well led (both by Shan and Andy Flower) . . any leader who can make a team do better than the sum of its parts is a very good leader (something that has been missing from the national team) . . There's no question Multan over performed expectations . . I still remember vast majority saying it was a good for nothing, useless squad at the beginning of the tournament which is going to finish last . .
So, not sure I agree about the captain aspect but we can agree to disagree there . . Though again, I agree that Shan is not a T20 player but I think he has done better than I would have expected him to . .
Just for your consumption: Shan is the 6th highest scorer in this edition (the last 2 innigns didn't help) at a strike rate of 128. For comparison, the 3 pakistani players above him in total runs scored are: Fakhar with a SR of 130, Mohammad Hafeez SR of 126 and Babar with a SR of 123!
So he hasn't done that badly . . let's give him credit for that
Lastly, topping the table means you were over a long period of time the most consistent team . . Surely, you can't completely discount that . . Losing Moeen Ali, James Vince arguably hurt them too!

Multan's team is full of trundlers Junaid trundler khan seems to be the leader of the pack then there is Sohail trundler and they have another young trundler ilyas and buzurg irfan they should kick them out if they want to have any chance next season
But Andy and his team are the ones who selected/persisted with a lot of these oldies.
As everyone has said, they definitely need to replace many of them in the next season with younger players.

Karachi: Pakistan’s former fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has revealed that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to axe current head coach Misbah-ul-Haq.
According to the 45-year-old Akhtar, Zimbabwe’s Andy Flower will replace after the conclusion of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season six.
“The decision has been finalized of Misbah’s removal. Flower has been sanctioned and he will take over as the head coach after the PSL 6,” he revealed on his YouTube channel.
Akhtar termed PCB’s Cricket Committee as ‘Rubbish’ and thinks that the committee is formed by the PCB to avoid the blame.
“There’s no such thing as the committee. They just tow the PCB’s line. PCB in order to keep away from criticism puts the blame on the committee. It’s totally rubbish that they say they have made decisions based on the committee’s recommendations,” he added.
The world’s fastest bowlers went on to say that no member of the coaching staff will stay as Flower is bringing his own people.
Note, PCB’s cricket committee yesterday gave the last chance to Misbah and bowling coach Waqar Younis to prove themselves in the series against South Africa.

This post aged well
regardless of international performance it’s a formula that clearly worked for MultanAgree, Kristen and A Flower are the best coaches in cricket. But I don't know if an overseas resident could be an effective chief selector. For that matter, need a chief selector who's fully focused on selection, who can travel to domestic games, spend time and speak with domestic players, etc.
Coach can't do that, they're generally preoccupied and travelling with the national team.

To be honest, there is a huge talent crisis in Pakistan. The players coming through are bog average. Little talent, little skill, no mentality. They are like club level cricketers.
You cannot expect someone like A Flower to do magic with a hopeless lot. That is why there is no reason to get excited over the idea of him replacing Misbah because the results will not look much different.
At the end of the day, every coach need good players to work with. Same goes for inferior coaches as well. Misbah might not be very good, but you make him India, England, Australia and New Zealand coach and they will still be ranked in the top 4, simply because they have much better players than Pakistan.
Nevertheless, as a cricket board, you cannot hire mediocre coaches just because the players are mediocre as well.
It is better to have an elite coach and a mediocre bunch of players than have a mediocre coach and a mediocre bunch of players.
The only real positive that could come out of A Flower’s appointment is that he will get the best out of the 2-3 quality players that Pakistan has, such as Babar, Shaheen and Rizwan.
He is a beast of a coach who has and will do wonders when you give him quality players.

Interesting comments by Flower.
Even with the superhuman Rizwan replacing him, there seem to be some hints that people really respect Shan as captain. Say what you want, but there’s something there. It’s not like Flower would be nepotistic. Shan was brilliant last season with an underwhelming but smart team.

Andy is a good coach and never compromises on discipline. But his coaching methodology is better suited to Tests and ODIs. In t20s an over can change the whole match, and it does happen quite often in the shortest format.
For shan, think it has been pretty obvious that he is quite an astute captain who leads well but the problem is Shan the batter. His batting is just too limited to be a constant presence in the top order for t20s.

I feel talent wise we are okay but the young players play dumb cricket. They have very little strategic thought. We also place an emphasis on things like pace with little said about finer aspects like wrist position, Control, and tactical awareness.

If he takes charge of Pak team, then there will be lot of changes from what Misbah is doing right now and so stubborn about it.. Especially team selection and batting orders which Pak always lack... Repeatedly playing Asif ali lol

The analysis driven coaching paid off, looks like he got the players onboard after a slow start, good coach would do well with Pakistan, this title may sweeten him up a bit.

However, he's just shook his hand in the build-up to the game at the Oval and Flower gave him a big smile, which he found really heartwarming. He said it's funny that he is here talking about franchise cricket when it was franchise cricket that destroyed his relationship with Flower.
Sammy responded by saying that he doesn't know the Andy Flower that Pietersen's been talking about all these years. For him Flower's always been a relaxed and easy-going personality with whom he's loved working with at St Lucia in the CPL.

Andy Flower has been confirmed as the head coach for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, succeeding director of cricket operations, Mike Hesson, whose tenure with the franchise has ended. The contracts of remaining members of the RCB support staff, including head coach Sanjay Bangar, have also not been extended.

What's the reason of MS letting go off Andy Flower? Flower was one of the main reasons of MS became so good in last few seasons.

It is because a month ago, Flower, who is one of the most decorated coaches in the game, was appointed head coach of Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL for a three-year term.

There’s no way Multan would sack him. He’s done so well, even though Multan were placed at a disadvantage joining late, they had to start with discards from other teams. Good luck to him, I thought there might have been an outside chance he could become Pakistan coach but that ship has sailed now, I don’t think he wanted the job.

Multan developed ZERO middle order batsmen for Pakistan. A big, fat ZERO. And pakistan need middle order batsmen.
All he did well was to ensure that the middle order is stacked with World cricket middle order heavy weights such as David, Pollard, Russouw and Miller.
Flower is a rubbish coach for Pakistani cricketers just as anyone

I think Abdul Rehman has more than earned the right to coach in the PSL. His KPK team had been very successful.

He rightfully deserves the role of the national team coach, not to mention the position of a PSL team coach. I believe his quieter demeanor may be the reason why he hasn't received fair treatment, which unfortunately tends to be typical in this country.

But IPL and PSL's schedules don't clash. Flower coaches in the hundred as well I believe.

Yes but MS should have made a statement as to whether Andy Flower was let go or negotiations failed or Flower wanted to move on from MS.
It's the bearded guy who does a lot of coaching in domestic cricket and has been around for many years.
