To be fair to him tho did well for a bit around 2014 after the Sharjah meltdown. For a few months. Need that Mathews back if that's even possible. Someone needs to poke the bear again.

I don't think he is that good, he is out of form. In the last 12-18 months Chandimal had been the key player, Mathews has just been a supporter alongside Mendis and de Silva

He also looks to have gained weight and his bowling has been ineffectual for a long time too.

He needs to shape up in all departments, from captaincy to individual performance and fitness if he is to realise the potential he showed a couple of years ago.

I rate him highly as a batsman but as a captain he repeatedly fails to capitalise when his team are in the ascendancy or when a wicket falls.

Many times when a wicket is taken, instead of Mathews bringing on another frontline bowler - the next over you see some part-timer coming in allowing the new batsman to settle and all the pressure is relieved.

He's a great player. Very versatile. He's more of a mentor than a leader though.

You can't blame him at times. SL fast bowlers don't even bowl more than 10 to 15 overs/ inning in FC matches, so after a while they get tired and starts spraying all over the place and get tonked. It happened to today as well so you need to set defensive field for bowling. That being said, you have to blame him for picking 2 main fast bowlers, one main spinner and packing rest of the line up with "All rounders" that can't bat nor bowl in Lois. In some matches it would be just Lakmal or Pradeep being just the main fast bowler along with Herath and rest would be useless players filling in.
