Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann has caused outrage on social media after posting a photograph of himself blackface as part of a fancy dress costume.

The Manchester United target, who came close to joining the Old Trafford club in the summer before having a change of heart, posted the photo on his Twitter account, with the caption “80s Party” with a basketball emoji and a laughing emoji.

He was dressing up as an NBA allstar basketball player.

The responses were all negative with many of his followers urging the striker to remove the photo immediately and delete the post.

There were also fans of Manchester United responding by saying they don’t want the player anywhere near the club, despite being voted the third best player in the world last year.

Griezmann is expected to leave Atletico Madrid in the summer with The Independent understanding that Barcelona are thought to be winning the race for his signature.

it's like the black & white minstrel show, lampooning black skin

So because of this, no person can ever imitate their black sports hero's?

The world has gone PC made while true racism by governments and others is swept under the carpet.

It’s sad that we live in an era where a harmless incident like this creates so much noise on social media and elsewhere yet real racism, and there is enough of it in France, won’t even get mentioned by the same people who are apparently outraged by Griezmann.

so who was he impersonating? is it just a generic nba player?

Harlem Globetrotters.

It's a comedic basketball act performed around the country (world?). I believe they've been around for a LONG time.

Very naive of Greizmann to assume it would be welcomed.

The face is dark because the light is either behind or over his head.

I have clicked several pictures where the subjects came out real dark because of lack of light.

Either way, this picture should never get the wrong attention it is getting.

He probably didn’t mean any harm but a lot of people will be upset by such a clumsy display of atavism.

This sort of thing touches a nerve because it harks back to a time where blackface was a common practice demeaning black people, particularly in the USA, but even in the U.K. relatively recently where the Black and White Minstrel Show was on telly until the early eighties.
