Just finished the first 5 issues of 'Kill Or Be Killed'...excellent premise and excellent execution so far...just wait that I have to wait a month for each issue...

Premise is a guy is told he by a demon that he can live providing he kills a new person every month...

Got into graphic novels quite late in life...and haven't really gone the Marvel/DC route but generally crime and politics...

Non fiction stuff is excellent...i'm surprised actually that this medium isn't utilised more...the success of memoirs such as Persepolis or Arab of the Future...Joe Sacco's work...Maus etc...

Pakistan got any graphic novel culture?...

graphic novels/comics aren't big among Pakistanis, you'll find a lot of novel readers but not graphic novels/comic readers

I have read most of the high profile DC stuff. Think you'd really enjoy Arkham Assylum and how it drives the narrative through symbolism but it won't be everyone's cup of tea stylistically. Black Mirror is a great crime psychological thriller and off course The Dark Knight Returns was quality. Am a big fan of the dark and gritty material.

On Spiderman: Blue at the moment, it's a pretty sad story.

I've always preferred the Graphic Novel format.

Not sure but Mamoon reads a fair amount, he'd answer your Q better

Used to be, big time. Love Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, Garth Ennis, Grant Morrison.

John Constantine is my favourite comic character (the original, not the watered-down New 52 version).

V for Vendetta & Watchmen ! nuff said !.. Best standalone graphic novels in the comic book mould..

If you are into more established series try :

1) Batman - Year One, Dark Knight Returns, The Long Halloween, Dark Victory,The Killing Joke, Arkham Asylum, Batman-The Cult, Batman and The Monster men, Batman- Hush etc, some of these were initially published as multi-part comic series but later consolidated as graphic novels

2) Sin City - The Hard Goodbye, Big Fat Kill, That Yellow *******, A dame to kill for

Graphics novels/comics are not really big in Pakistan. Personally, I'm not much of a fan either. Unfortunately the reading culture itself is slowly dying out. Young children these days are busy playing games on iPads while we used to eagerly wait for the next Harry Potter book. Adults and young teens are too busy with academics etc. to indulge in this pleasure.

Nothing beats reading a good book though, and I mean real books, not these nonsense e-books etc.

They both started as monthly books though.

Have a look at From Hell. Took me a weekend to read. Very dense and very scary.

See also Promethea and Top Ten - the latter a SF pastiche of '80s Cop show Hill Street Blues.

I read them sometimes if I get my hands on them for free.

There are some decent releases in that format but I prefer the actual physical copy and would never buy an e-book, they seem to be popular amongst the folk who use tablets frequently. Yeah true, responsibilities tend to get in the way of reading as you grow older; in my free time I read the Shining but I've been on the book for like 2 years lol. Comics are easier to get through. When I was in Pakistan a long time ago there were many novels in Urdu by Pakistani writers which were very popular and would sell well at the market; they seemed like short-stories which revolved around themes such as family life and the Jin/Ghosts :))

Tintin is the greatest comic book series of all time imo. So damn realistic and ahead of its time. Everyone who hasn't read it should. It's as good as the best action movies and games

Those who are interested in Indian mythology , should definitely try out "Amar Chithra Katha" series of graphic novels.. Capture the essence of ancient Indian culture & Mythology and was a great source of mythological info for a good number of Indian kids till the late 90's !

Some great suggestions in this thread...i'll be sure to check some out...

Just completed Velvet...cool espionage thriller by Ed Brubaker...although I think the most recent parts are a lot weaker than the first couple thirds...

I'm looking into getting some of the rest of Brubakers stuff at the end of the month...anyone read any of his stuff?...

The Fade Out, Incognito, Fatale, Sleeper and Incognito are due to be ordered...

I've read his version of Captain America is brilliant...

DC is darker than marvel. I prefer that.

DC way better. Too bad the movies they are making are money grabbing trash. I find it hilarious when these hardcore comic book fans try to defend these movies by saying saying you can only like them if you read the comics. Comic book fans are often really annoying.
