I have taken up hiking in the UK in the last 2-3yrs. I find it helps with mental physical fitness. There is something about going to the hills & breathing in the fresh air.

its something id like to get into, but have been time strapped. usually, walk a lot of holidays, but not so much at home.

anyone got any recommendation for blisters, the front of my my sole blisters badly, and the only option i really have is taping it up, or using plasters, but this usually leaves my skin unable to breathe, and very itchy at night after.

anyone had any success with specialist socks, or is taping the only way to go?

I use leukotape on blister hotspots…does the job. You can try hiking socks which keep moisture away. Over time, both of my toenails have fallen off.

I do not like hiking because you never know what kind of wild animal or a crazy hippie you may encounter. I mean a lot can go wrong.

It is much better to hit the gym than hiking.

Bizarre take that

It’s something I started doing during the pandemic since hikes were one of the few activities which is socially distant and accessible.

Def a good workout and if the end of the hike is a great view then even better

Also wow never knew UK had such diverse topography.. I always assumed it’s just lush rolling hills at most

I try to once every 1-2 months. Agree it’s great for both your mental and physical fitness, the views are just breathtaking. It’s one big adventure and you encounter various obstacles, so long you prep well it’s fine but you’re literally on edge and that can be thrilling. British countryside is stunning

i used leukotape and it worked, went to the peak district with a friend, found it quite tough on ascents, but i am fairly out of shape, was well worth it all in all, hopefully work on my fitness some more and try to get out later in the year again...

Well done! Looks awesome..where in the Peak District this is?

Hiking is probably one of the best activities you can do. Yosemite park. Isle of Skye, Swiss mountains are some memorable ones. Highly suggest people to get into it or plan vacation with a number of hikes instead of simply touring through buses ike old people....not that those aren't fun but walking long with breathtaking views and fresh air is a magical experience.

Avoid secluded unknown remote areas or do those with a few people

I love hiking. In my younger days I did a fair amount of Pakistan. In my 20s I did parts of Colombia. My current place to hike in northern Spain where I spend my summers . I dont camp though. Never.Day hikes and back to my warm bed

Mental benefits of hiking are huge. You just feel refreshed, get to spend time with yourself. True soul vitalist.

I love upstate NY, perhaps one of the most beautiful place in the world with lakes, hills and forest. My wife and I go for hiking frequently there . Went twice last year, both time in Catskill area. Planning to go again this year in June ( hopefully ) and one in fall, October .

Assuming rain levels are low then go up the pyg trail and come down the miners. The car parks do fill up in summer so get there early.

It is much more fun this route and better views than llanberis family trial. Give yourself 2-3 hours to go up and 2 hours to come down - any quicker then it’s a bonus.

Hikers:

What exercises do you tend to do out of season to rebuild your endurance?

I do weights, sport and look to introduce new workouts actively

Walking and walking, whether it be incline treadmill or Chiltern hills near to where I live.

If I’m training for Mont Blanc then around 7 hours a week split in 1 hour sessions on 15 incline is adequate. I’ll keep my speed varied as long as stage in zone 2 or my heart rate. I use training peaks app as their formula I feel to calculate fitness is pretty good. Most of my hikes are in my heavy B1 hiking boots and depending on how fit I am, I’ll add weight to my back pack too. I try and not drink water during my training hikes and treadmill jobs as carrying 5 litres of water on Mont Blanc is torturous so I’ll train to limit water dependency.

You’re a boxer right? Your legs will be fine but I do power lift movements such as weighted squats and deadlifts, minimum one a week all year round.

Unfortunately I haven’t trained how I use to since my club relocated and in that period, that level of fitness declined. I train individually now but Boxing is a team sport from a training/fighting POV. But I would otherwise agree the circuit training is helpful. Thanks for the walking tips, I will try it, although due to time I tend to do HIT on the treadmill 1 min walk and 1 min sprint for 10 min and then bag work. I can try the HIT on incline to I guess.

Carrying the water can be a pain, although I haven’t carried anything more that 2 litres. I did Kinder Scout once on 500-750ml once, that wasn’t fun lol

I tried skiing , couldn't be good in it and had some injuries, also . It must be great enjoyment i you are comfortable and good in it .

Last time we rented a nice cottage through airbnb in a forest near Phoneacia in Catskill and hiked in many tails in the area. Only thing which we didn;t like was the signs of " beaware of bears ", luckily din;t meet with any.

Planning to go to Lake Placid area later this summer.

It’s a bit far off but finger lakes area is great also. I don’t know it much. Only been once. Too far from nyc . Lake George by Saratoga is nice also. Yes lake placid is magical.

Have been to finger lakes also , stayed at the town of Sylvan Beach ( Oneida Lake ) last year and hiked in the area . Have been to lake George but too cowded for me .

Until recent years I had a HIIT mindset for everything thing I and thought I was fit but realised different energy systems.

Using boxing again as an analogy, I have seen ultra marathon runners, cyclists and even ironmen enter a boxing ring for sparring. You’d think they would be fitter than a fat guy like me but they train in zones 2 whereas my HR going into 180s was normal for me. These athletes barely had a round in them yet much fitter than me in a traditional sense.

Around a decade ago when I was boxing fit, I went on a Mont Blanc intro course in the lane district and struggled despite hitting a heavy bag daily for 12 rounds. Different energy systems again.

To excel in something like a Snowdon mountain, you need to just train in a low intensity manner and lower the weight if possible

That's useful advice, will look into it

Plan is to drive down on the Friday, be up early on Saturday to do the climb and then drive back on the Sunday. Did that for Ben Nevis and liked making a full weekend of it as otherwise squeezing into a day or two gets a bit much

Do you mean Mount Snowdon in Snowdonia? Can easily be done in 5hrs up and down. Done it twice. You will love it.

Awesome stuff, I’d like to jump on board one day if you allow me. Many of my friends say that want to hike but come up with excuses the day before leaving.

Of course..jump on board. The group has grown substantially.

I know exactly how you feel re friends. I am the only hiker in my circle.

Also, the main Pen Y Pass car park is online prebook only. There is also Nant Peris car park about 3miles down. Think it’s around £5 all day and you would catch a bus to Pen Y Pas for the start point.

I have been living in Oman for the last few months. There are a lot of mountains nearby and I do hiking quite a bit. Its a good workout and you get into nature. I really find it fun. Recently in Pakistan I did the Miranjani trail in Nathia Gali. That was just stunning. Almost felt like I was in Switzerland.

did the seven sister cliffs in east sussex, amazing weather, amazing views, had to detour cos of a river, took abt 5 hours with a few stops along the way. almost slipped at one point which was a squeaky bum moment but managed to hold on, lol.
