Wars, violence and destruction - we humans seem very good at it. But equally some can argue that we are truly "ashraful maqhlooqat" (the best of ALL the Almighty's creations) ourselves so by default we should be less destructive - but that isnt always the case?!

Nope, the most complex but not the best. There are much better things, & other living beings, out there not trying to kill one another, or the earth, in the name of ~ well so many things!
Human beings are best of God's creation and in time to come that will be proven. At the moment people are like babies and they still have a lot of learning to do so that they could one day fulfil purpose of God for which he has created them and the rest of the universe and all things in it.
Human beings are created at a very basic level and they are provided with raw materials to interact with and show their creativity just like God himself. This is why God has created mankind with ability of choice. For a while people will keep on destroying each other because do not know any better as they have been created without knowing anything and that is why they are going to take time before they become a learned people. Why God created people as babies and gave them ability of choice and things to do along with his revelation is something for mankind to figure out for themselves.
It is all due to purpose God had in his mind for creating things which he revealed in his message for human beings. However people are busy doing other things rather than learning God's message as they are supposed to learn it and follow it. This situation will not last forever because humanity is slowly moving towards the end God has set for it to reach.
To be honest its very hard to give a convincing answer to it. Some would say the purpose of our creation is to worship God. Some say purpose of our creation is to pass this worldly test to live an eternal life in heaven or hell. Some would say you are a part of an infinitely big cosmic system and you would always exist in some form or the other.
You have to concede that a big part of Faith is blind. No shame in admitting the truth. You just have to see which version YOU consider worth accepting. You will get different answers for the purpose of life from diferent faiths. People would defend their beliefs because these beliefs are a part of their self now. Its the same for almost everyone including me. We all are guilty of it no matter what we believe in. It is because of primary and secondary socialization followed by reinforcements through social folkways, mores and religious institutions. It would require alienation and re-socialisation to readjust any such beliefs. This itself requires the circumstances and relevant atmosphere to fall in place.
Trust me, you can be a pedant and find faults with every one of such beliefs because we tend to look at things from a limited human perspective and our understanding is based on our limited senses. In my opinion we simply cannot understand everything no matter how hard we try. However some people, for clear tangible gains, use the same excuse and tell us that we cannot understand everything just to exploit us. We have to be aware of such people. At the other end of the spectrum are others who are in a constant quest to explain everything and think that they understand how this universe works.
While it is good to keep looking, it is also good to acknowledge the possiblity of our minds just not having the capability to comprehend certain universal facts on its own. It would make us more conscious and wise. Socrates knew that he knew nothing. That made him the wisest man in Greece.
They are good a both, population is always expanding due to lack of protection sometimes intended sometimes not intended. But also good at destruction as we can see all around the world
