Are Kamal Haasan movies popular in Pakistan?

Did any of you in Pakistan watch Vishwaroop?

North Indians hardly watch Kamal movies.

Let alone Pakistanis.

So answer is no.

And Kamal movies have been rubbish in recent times due to his obsession to make movies for his acting rather than the other way around.

I didn't even bother to watch his recent movies cos my friends (who watched it) told me it was all garbage.

Dasavatharam was his last movie I saw in theater and it was as bad as Mani Rathnam's Raavan (another director who has completely lost the plot and makes rubbish movies these days). Wanted to walk out of the theater after first half.

But in general...as an actor...he is simply simply phenomenal.

His acting skills and the range of roles he can play is astounding.

If he had debuted in this era, he would be hailed by all Indians.

What idd you think of Hey Ram?

Mutual cultural values if any are only shared by Pakistanis with North Indians.

Kamal Hassan is a south indian actor (as per google) so dont expect many to know about him.

I have read that after partition many Tamils and Keralites of Muslim faith did went over to Karachi...so there might be a chance of some of them keeping track of south Indian movies... sensible-indian-fan have u ever come across any Tamil Pakistani? I remember one Mr. Kutty a socialist communist activist of Pakistan who is actually a mallu

He used to make/be part of better films but not anymore. As a Kamalahaasan fan, I was very disappointed with most of his recent films. Much hyped flicks like Vishwaroopam, Uttama Villain were nothing but damp squib. I felt even the commercially successful Dasavathaaram was not of kamal's usual standards. BTW, last film that I really liked which had Kamalahaasan in it was Anbey Sivam.

Didn't read this post before posting mine. You are echoing my thoughts!

dhoni183 has watched the movie and gave his review in the thread " what was the last film you watched" here is the review

Vishwaroopam' (2013)

To my own surprise I have watched a Tamil film. I have been looking for its dubbed version into Hindi since three months (as my friend RWAC would testify).

I heard about the film in relation to 'PK' (2014), which being that like 'PK' did with Hindus, this one hurt the sentiment of Muslims, making it a controversial film that had to bear a loss of 30 Crore Rupees or something due to the reactions to it.

The other reason to watch the film being Kamal Hassan. I have not watched too many of his Bollywood films either, but got to know that film 'Virasat' (1997) was in fact a remake of a South Indian film that he had written (and also acted in) and was greatly impressed by the story of the film. So I was quite eager to watch this one.

Now, coming to the review of the film, the action is brilliant, some of the killings etc. are in such a brutal and original manner that you get the feel of being there present on the spot.

As for it being controversial, that's beyond me really. The film nowhere puts Islam into question and neither portrays it to be that all Muslims are terrorists.

Overall a good film but the ending looked very sudden, forced upon and out of shape. So that was disappointing.

I will give it seven out of 10.

What idd you think of Hey Ram?

Watched it as a kid so don't remember every detail.

Great movie and in that Kamal was astounding as usual.

I have got to watch his past movies now. Will be fun.

One of my most favourite Kamal movie (if not the most favourite) is Panchatantram. By far, the best comedy movie I have seen in any language. Comedy woven layer by layer. One has to watch the movie atleast 5-10 times to get all the jokes. Great acting by all actors in that movie. :)

No bro.

Haven't seen anyone like that online.

Virasaat the tamil one was massiely inspired by Godfather so was Nayagan (Dayavan in Hindi).

Kamal has become too selfish as an actor he is still good at acting but now he is just not realizing the value of script and direction. And the north Indians(similar to Pakistanis) that even do watch South Indian movies are either of Surya,Rajni or some dubbed Telugu fighting movie on random Hindi channel defn not good cinema!

nayagan was based on a true story of a gangster and i have seen the hindi version i did not find any resemblance to godfather story wise

Kamal hassan has become narcissistic sometimes does more acting in a scene than needed! Dubbed telugu movies has a huge market and audience in North.

If you are not into Tamil cinema, you can never appreciate this guy. You see the sheer variety in the roles that he has played, and you realize that there has never been an actor in Indian mainstream cinema who has experimented so much with his roles. It is a pity that we do not celebrate this man and his exploits a little more.

At the risk of sounding like a Greek to my fellow Pakistani brothers here, here's a sample of his performances over the last 50 years:

Absolute Classics

Nayakan: Won the national award for what can only be described as a cult performance in a cult movie (listed by the Time magazine as one of the 50 films one must see before one dies!!).

Pushpak: An absolutely delightful comedy presented in a silent movie format, with a gorgeous Amala thrown in as a bonus!

Moondram Pirai: Another masterpiece, and another national award. A moving story of platonic love between a man and a beautiful woman who slips back in memory to the level of a 5 year old. Added attraction - Indian cinema’s best ever lullaby rendered beautifully by Yesudas. remade in Hindi as 'Sadma'.

Mahanadi: A poignant tale of a desperate father rescuing his teenage daughter who gets abducted and thrown into the red-light district of Bengal – and dealing with its traumatic aftermath. I thought he deserved a National Award for this one.

Sippikkul Muththu: Another moving 'biopic' like movie made by K Vishwanath about the life of a differently abled man (Remade in Hindi by Anil Kapoor as Eashwar).

Silangai Oli: Another K Vishwanath movie, which starts off showing Kamal as an alcoholic dance critic and unfolds backwards into his past.

Anbe Shivam: A beautiful take on Capitalism versus Socialism/Humanism, and a must watch. Delightfully well written and witty screenplay. Kamal brilliant with an almost equally good performance by Madhavan.

Intense Drama

Thevar Magan: Watch it for some riveting scenes involving Shivaji and Kamal. About caste wars in rural Tamil Nadu.

Virumandi: Yet another tale on the ills of caste. Kamal won high praise.

Oru Kaidiyin Diary: A slightly ‘over the top’ revenge drama – with Kamal excelling in a double role.

Thrillers

Kurudhi Punal: An edge of the seat thriller, with terrorism as its back drop. Remade in Hindi with Ashish Vidyarthi and Om puri, which just did not measure up.

Vettayadu Vilayadu: A slick Gautam Menon thriller – featuring Kamal playing a crime branch officer with great style and effect. It's about how he chases down two medical students who are serial rapists.

Comedies

Thenali: A situational comedy in which Kamal plays a Sri Lankan Tamil who is unintentionally (& delightfully) funny.

Meendum Kokila: A Kamal-Sridevi masterpiece, where our man (playing a jobless lawyer) gets carried away by the attention he gets from a lady movie star.

Panchtantram: A tale of 4 friends who try desperately to wash their hands off a murder they never committed.

Pammal K Sambandham: A comedy which has Kamal playing a misogynist who ends up falling for the very woman he sets out to hate.

Sati Leelavati: This time Kamal plays a marriage counselor. Used 'Coimbatore' Tamil very effectively to enhance the comic effect.

Romance

Ek Duje Ke Liye: Perhaps the only movie in this list that I do not need to create much awareness about for my friends who do not see/get to see Tamil cinema.

Raja Parvai: This love story has Kamal playing a blind violinist, with the lovely Madhavi playing his lady love.

Apoorva Ragangal: A K Balachander classic. Kamal plays a young rebel who falls in love with a much older woman only to eventually find her estranged daughter in love with his father, whom he rebelled against.

16 Vaithinile: A love story of a mentally challenged country bumpkin, set in the interiors of Tamil Nadu.

Punnagai Mannan: A story of two people who come out of failed suicide attempts to fall in love with each other.

Full blown commercial ‘masala entertainers, (each with a standout performance from Kamal)

Indran Chandran: A commercial pot boiler, with a solid performance by Kamal in a double role .

Michael Madana Kamarajan: You simply have to applaud the Palakkad Iyer character, out of the 4 that Kamal plays in this movie

Apoorva Sahodarargal: Yet another double role, with one being a dwarf! A little over the top – yes; but watchable.

Indian: A father – son dual role. Kamal is excellent as the father. Bagged the National Award yet again.

Others

Kalaththur Kannamma: Kamal’s first National Award. Should rank amongst the top 5 performances by child artistes in Indian cinema.

Vaumayin Niram Sigappu: Another K Balachander movie that deals with unemployment and its fallouts in the lives of a few friends.

Guna: Shows an abnormal and ‘possessed’ individual developing a fatal attraction towards a young girl, leading him to kidnap her and run away into the wilderness.

Chanakya: A Malayalam movie that deals with political crimes and corruption.

Hey Ram: Has Kamal playing a normal person, who gets sucked into extreme right wing ideology because of the personal loss he suffers during the 1947 riots.

Great post bro.

honestly never have even heard of the guy.

only south indian actor I know is the legendary Rajnikanth :))

We know of him.

Only from his urdu movies. Those also were from a while back, I am going to guess the 80s or so. So only expect older guys like me to know him, I dont think the younger Pakistani generation know him that much.

By the way I liked him in a movie where he plays an old freedom fighter. I dont remember the name of that movie. But I thought he did very well in it. He also played his son who was a corrupt hustler.

I found him a good actor. Your quote more appropriately describes Shahrukh Khan.

Shahrukh and Amir are equally good actors (at the same level, both overact sometimes) . Kamal does it OTT. You need to watch some of the movies where he goes OTT.

Comparing Shah Rukh and Aamir to Kamal is like comparing normal batsmen to ABDV. :))

Its a no competition. Not even close.

And I am no Kamal maniac myself.

And no...ABDV was used for comparison point of view. Not calling Kamal the greatest ever or the most versatile ever.

LOL.... I guess Indians have a different level of determining who is a good actor.

Shahrukh does not even hold a candle to Amir and Kamaal, in my opinion. They are both versatile, flexible actors who immerse themselves in their roles. Shahrukh does not act. He just plays the same old himself in every role, movie after movie. I will bet you he talks like that in real life too with over exaggerated movements and enunciation.

I wasn't comparing them to Kamal.. I was comparing them with each other when I said "both are equally good"

I know him. At first I thought he was a muslim actor because of his name but my Indian friend set me straight that Kamal Hassan is not muslim.

He is pretty good actor. I have only watched his urdu/hindi movies. There was a movie where he was in love with a girl of his village but would not tell her as she likes someone else kind of story; his acting was easily on way above level than anybody else in that movie; forgot the name of the movie.

I have seen his old Hindi movies - Saagar et all, not his Tamil ones. But yeah i have heard about one of his from an old college room-mate- the one which is a silent movie. Meant to watch it, but never did :)

You need to watch both Shahrukh and Amir in more movies.

I am sorry I dont need to watch anything. I usually dont have the stomach for Indian movies so maybe I am the wrong person to be declared an expert here or even commenting on this thread. But from what I have seen of Amir khan and Shah Rukh Khan, I like the former much more than the latter.

Could be a personal choice but I prefer the odd Indian movies than the traditional song and dance ones. I liked the more recent Amir khan movie where he played an alien. But I dont watch the traditional romantic garbage SRK stars in.

Lol @ SRK at same level as Kamal nothing is more hilarious when people mention SRK as an actor. He is a star and is going to along the lines of Akshay,Salman,Rajnikanth

Shahrukh and Amir are equally good actors (at the same level, both overact sometimes) . Kamal does it OTT. You need to watch some of the movies where he goes OTT.

Go back to watching Salman Khan coming shirtless out of water, while running his hair through his hair. Kamal Hassan is a better actor than Amir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan noobs.

Kamal fans think he is equally popular as DiCaprio. Kamal is out of touch with current fans. Current people of TN aren't smart as he thinks. He needs to calm down and do movies where the story isn't too complicated, he isn't gonna make money from well educated audience, he has to make money from his fanatics who pay 10X to watch his film on the first day.

I watched it on my TV, there is this app available for Smart Tvs and Desktop that lets you watch Tamil movies in 1080P. You gotta pay per month but the quality is amazing. The movie started of pretty well. Kamal is a famous actor in the film. His movies are horrible like Vijay's but he is well loved by his fans, actress Urvasi is his wife and he has a grown son who hates all of his dad's(Kamal's) movie. Sounds good so far doesn't it ? Well thinks kinda go kookoo from there.

Only watched that one movie where he dresses up as a grannny. I might be hallucinating, but is there a movie with Kamal Haasan where he's a vigilante killing people?

Only saw his Bollywood movies in the 80s. But since then never watched any. Well I stopped watching b-wood anyways since early 2000s. Felt it was too long, copied, and a waste of time.

Your personal choice is fine, but when you claim it to be correct, and laugh at the other person's views, you need to be at least watching those movies. At his worst, Amir is a bigger over-actor than Shahrukh.

Don't think so

There is an old famous movie where he kills women who does wrong doings (illicit affairs etc)

dhoni183 has watched the movie and gave his review in the thread " what was the last film you watched" here is the review

That controversy had nothing to with religion in reality it was created becoz of local politics.

No idea about a movie where he is a vigilante but the one where he dresses up as a granny is the Indian remake of Mrs. Doubtfire.

Read the comment properly before jumping to respond.

Where the hell does Kamal go over the top over SRK and Amir Khan ? Kamal can actually act, if he wants the audience to be ****** off, he'll **** you off. If he wants the audience to love him, they'll love him. Kamal doesn't go OTT. Never mention Kamal and SRK in the same sentence.

Basically it was an eruption from built up of frustration from the muslim community. There is nothing wrong with making a terrorist movie. But there is no single movie that makes a muslim look good in a Tamil film other than Vijay Anony's Salim. Everyone from Vijakanth to Vigay to Kamal continue to fight islamic terrorists. This just gives a bad name for muslims. As usual, cinema audience in TN are full of retards, total retards. Once my little cousin who had been shoved down with Tamil cinema asked if there are good muslims.

You didn't watch Kamal's Hindi movies, did you ?

You didn't watch Kamal's Hindi movies, did you ?

I watched kamal's hindi movies saagar where he overshadowed rishi kapoor, his debut hindi movie ek dhujje ke liye , he rocked in it and then i watched sadma that last scene in the movie where he chases after sridevi that one scene is greater than all the movies of srk and aamir.. He was fun in Chachi 420 too.. He is a very very good actor. I love SRK a lot My childhood crush but come on SRK is nowwhere near kaamal in acting. it's only lately that he is being doing crap movies and over acting for some reason.

Thats Sigappu Rojakkal (Red Roses). A thriller..

I think Pushpak is pure poetry on celluloid.. Even Charlie Chaplin films had some dialogues displayed on screen..But Pushpak is fully silent movie (except for some background noises)..A wonderful experiment in cinema..

His daughter is more known than him in Pakistan.

do you peoples understand the regional languages of india :O

Nothing great was the acting in Chachi 420.. other actors like Om puri/Amrish Puri and even Paresh Rawal acted better than him. It was all make up and no acting. You should watch other movies like Giraftaar to realize what I am saying about Kamal.

Who is comparing Shahrukh to Kamal by the way?

Don't think he is much known in Pakistan. Even his daughters would have more fan base than him. Hardly ever heard his name from anyone here.

I only waatched his Urdu movies. He used to do a lot of them back in the 80s and 90s.. I understand he doesnt do them so much anymore.

do you peoples understand the regional languages of india :O

only watched some of his urdu movies. would not mind watching his good movies in other languages of India provided there are subtitles in urdu or english.

His Heryram film was released about 25 years earlier than it should have been. People weren't exposed to good cinema, hence it flopped. LOL at people who thinks SRK and Amir Khan acts better than Kamal.

Just watched Papanasam today.

What a thriller. The way it was constructed was simply amazing.

And what a performance by Kamal.

After a long time, he is acting for a movie instead of the other way around and the results are immediately noticeable.

Loved this movie.

I watched the Malayalam Original (MohanLal) and telugu remake (Venkatesh)....Kamal still did the 'See...I can do this as well' in this movie also with type of tamil he choose to speak ...I really really wish Kamal stops doing that ! He is phenomenal actor but these days he is quite often going over the movie.....even refer to the last conversation between the parents and mohanlal/Kamal and look at the difference...Kamal I am afraid has lost the subtle nature in his acting ! Still a mindblowing actor...but this is one of complaints I have these days for Kamal..especially his movies since 2005 !

Don't know bro.

The same director made the movie right?

The new type of Tamil would have been chosen based on where the story was based so I didn't have the issue with it cos he playd that part without overdoing it.

Last conversation part - maybe. Personally, I found it great with his guilt coming out.

Maybe its just that he has notorious in this regard all these years that we look at him suspiciously these days.

Or maybe I may have a different view if I watch Mohanlal's version.

Dunno.

This could be it ! It is so hard for him to pull of a common man character these days because of this...even in unnaipol oruvan...you knew there would be a backstory behind the actions because it is kamal..and that suspicion just spoils the whole movie !

True.

In Unnaipol Oruvan Kamal screwed up due to this issue.

Mohanlal owned him in that movie playing the police cop to such perfection. Naseerudin Shah was much better in Kamal's role in the Hindi version.

But here in this case...its more complicated.

For example, when I heard Alvida song from Life In A Metro, I loved it and when I heard Alvida Reprised, I thought that the singer totally destroyed the whole Alvia song.

Then soon.....I started loving Alvida Reprised and didn't like the Alvida song.

Now I like both. :))

I thought Hey Ram was absolutely fantastic.

I think those growing up in the early 90's would know of Kamal Hassan because of his emergence in the hindi cinema during that time but he was never a big celebrity.

Can't edit the previous post. Wanted to add

I remember some of his movies from the mid-eighties which I watched on TV when growing up. Movies like Saagar, Geraftaar and Sadma.

I think one of his most memorable movies is Sanam Teri Kasam primarily due to the 'Kitne Bhi Tu Kar Le Sitam' song.

Appu Raja is one of my favourite films of all time.

Nobody can remake that movie with the technique Kamal used at that time. Nowadays they will use computer effects to get the draft character

Was it cleared by the censor boards in Pakistan for release?

This has been the problem with Kamal over the last decade or so. JMO, he has become way too narcissistic/self-indulgent for his own good. This is getting reflected in many of his post 90's flick (blatantly).

It wasn't released in Pakistan. There was a ban on Indian movies being screened at that time. I think the ban was lifted in 2005, If I'm not mistaken.

Glad to find this thread. A confused politician/activist now but what a body of work in his younger days.
