Are today's people more interested to show the world they were there instead of enjoying the moment?

You go to any event, concert, function anything.

ANything interesting comes up, instead of watching it people pull out their smart phones to record it and then post it online.

To me it seems as if people just want t show everyone that they were their instead of enjoying the actual event in real time.

This is a false binary. People are enjoying the moment, as well as recording it for memories or showing to their friends. The enjoyment gets multiplied.

Absolutely. It is a classic gen X versus gen Y situation. The experience of the moment to oneself is being replaced with the self-gratification of a share, like, comment which is becoming a mainstay of most global media organisations (in pushing their ATL strategies to be incresasingly driven by social and the intersection between paid, owned and earned media).

And being, personally the former, I find it quite tragic and quite an insecure way of viewing the world and our place within it. Everything from being in a remarkable place of beauty to watching your child take their first step - and rather than savour the moment, there is a need to record and send to all and sundry - which to me is a very fickle and disingenuous way to appreciate life.

I also find it quite tragic and foolish way to lead a life where people don't record their special moments, probably they don't find it worthy enough to be remembered. Their choice, but such a waste of life.

Good point.. people now a days are interested in showing people that they are having fun rather than actually having fun. Its all about the likes you get on Facebook or the retweets you get on Twitter or how lit your Snapchat story is.

You’re already born with the single best means of capturing, storing and recording events. At present technology cannot give you the kind of emotional recollection ones own natural means of recalling events can.

What you are describing is where the value of an event is linked to its ability to share. Not the same thing.

They are more into X1 vs X2........Xn

I agree. People are competing with each other on social media to get most likes/comments and this is all by design by these companies. Social media and smart phones have changed society so much in such a short period of time now you are considered a weirdo for not having your phone out when you are just sitting down looking out of the window.

I pity those people who are soo caught up in these social media battles, they don't know the meaning of enjoying simple things in life and appreciating all that is around you.

Couldn't agree more. Sports events are the worst example of this. You go to Premier League football grounds and some folks are more interesting in taking selfies than contributing to the atmosphere.

I think ppl can enjoy a moment while capturing it as well. I think the thing is that people like to always show that they are enjoying a moment by capturing it even if they aren’t

the worst is when they go to Mekkah and start taking selfies in front of the Kaaba. The saudi's should imprison idiots who do that!!

Partly agree , it was nothing different from past just that these days people have multiple means to show through social networking sites etc

Interesting OP, one advantage to this approach is that there will certainly never be another "dark age" of history - since the popularity explosion of the Internet, and of smartphones also, we can be confident that the majority of what human beings 'do' will now be documented; digital footprints have the potential to last forever.

It makes no difference to me, I don't really use social media except to be polite now and then. People can take all the pictures they want of food, landmarks, cute babies, whatever. I'm still trying to work out what is the point of SnapChat?

I put it on my stories on apps such as Snapchat when I go out clubbing etc. I save it to my memories and I still have fun as it only takes like 5-10 seconds to film

i really don't get people filming such moments because it makes them enjoy less and for me its kind of ruining it for yourself

There is nothing wrong with taking a selfie in the holy cities as long as you are doing it for memories and not trying to be funny etc.

As for the OP, there has been stupidity which has hurt people but overall nothing wrong with taking photos, you can still enjoy the event or your experience.

Whenever I go clubbing in University I always put it on snapchat because I'm loving the moment. I end up having a good night and the same goes for any other rave I go to or concert. However, I will agree that there are some people who do this to show off.

I disagree. I believe it sullies the whole umrah/hajj experience and your entering into some narcissism. I went to Hajj many years ago and still remember every moment. I didnt need a selfie. Its simply showing off and we all know what Allah swt says about that.
