I am not a facebook user but i do use whatsapp regularly and there are reports facebook have been using your whatsapp data including the so called encrypted calls, messages to show you related ads based on your interests and conversations and they have been sharing the data with companies. There were always rumors about these companies using our data but after these recent reports it's confirmed now.

So it looks there is no privacy these days specially if you are into computers, gadgets, mobiles etc. So my question is are you ok with it?

I deleted my Facebook and Instagram long ago. Can't trust these people anymore.

As long as it's done through algorithms and it's not some creepy guy going through my conversations, I don't actually mind targeted ads.

Many people reported that as soon as they used some words in their facebook, whatsapp conversations and calls they were shown related ads next time they opened facebook website.

Facebook value is gone down $75 billion within a week so there must be something serious not just allegations.

Are you using WhatsAapp? WhatsAapp is also owned by Facebook and they use Whatsapp data too.

I do use it sometimes but it's more of a mazboori than anything else.
Planning to delete it soon as well.

I believe every other company and app is doing it these days so it's hard to avoid and some govts do know it and allow it because it saves them lot of time and money when they can use 3rd party to access their citizens data without any effort

I find it funny whem people complain about facebook but use Google products. Android, Chrome, Youtube, Google search have a lot more data than FB does.

It's also funny when people that own home devices like Amazon Echo or Google Home complain cause that's even more invasive.

True thats why i said "other servcies too". Google is the biggest evil they have access to most of the data even when you visit other websites with google tracking code involve you are installing their cookies in your browser and sharing data without your knowledge.

Guys I have this question to ask.
Stuff that we search on Google, can it lend you in some sort of trouble in future (not asking about illegal things)? Do authorities know about it?

Yeah and they also have access to your mic and webcam. There are many reports that people have noticed ads after they were talking about something (not over the phone). Try changing permissions granted on your phone.

That's nor enough. Facebook collects data through those little facebook plugins they have on almost every single website including this website. They also have 'pixels' installed on websites, which you isn't visible.

They do share data with govts and it can be used in case there is any investigation involved related to that.

Saves them a lot of legal troubles too. Govts aee bound by the constitution however companies make you sign this "terms & conditions" which most of us don't bother to read , authorizing them to do this. They're very manipulative.

People deleting themselves from FB et Al need to have a word with selves.

Google is the biggest culprit when it comes to data collection.

Yea it's like CIA hiring private contractors like black water to do their dirty work.

One thing is confirmed now that AI technology is already practical in some shape.

Another one is genetic testing companies, they sell your dna to companies and researchers and can do anything with it. Even something as bizarre as cloning you or framing you for something.

Google is tracking you. Even when you're in Airplane Mode

MUST WATCH!

TOR is known as the most secure and anonymous communication system compared to proxies and vpn but guess what there are many TOR nodes being operated by govts to use as honeypots to see what people do after fooling them that they are anonymous :yk

FB, Whatsapp, Instagram all of them are kids in front of Google.

True there is no match specially when you realize google owns the biggest browser chrome, search engine system and mobile browser android. There is no way you can avoid google while using internet because even if you don't use chrome, android and google.com still they can access your data through other websites when you visit them and they have google code like analytics installed.

Yes. It seems you are aware of FB Campaigns. They track eveything from people's interests, age, likes on posts to pages they visit and ads are displayed according to that. So if you have shown your interest in basketball and liked posts related to that you will see some ads about basketball in your FB page.

This is nothing. Google can even keep track of your voice chats and record them for better searching experience.

If you don't want google to track your searches then do it without logging in. If you regularly keep your browser cache clean and search without logging in you will only see ads for that session and those keywords you typed in google only.

Yea using incognito window/tab helps and also disabling cookies and disabling javascript can help but most sites these days block content if you disable cookies or javascript in your browser

If you don't want google to keep track of what you are searching then do it without logging in. If you regularly clean your browser cache after every session you will not see ads for the keywords you searched for few days ago. You will see ads related to those keywords you searched during that session. Google still knows about your IP address and device you used for that session. :inti

Facebook and other companies are working on the project to make internet free across the world. They make it seem like they're doing it for a good cause but they just want everybody in their ecosystem.

True they are not doing any charity. Google already started offering this free internet thingy. I laugh when some people think Facebook paid $17 billion to buy whatsapp and offer it for free without gaining anything lol

I personally don't mind, I can't expect my parents to remember all passwords, also google reminders on movies flights and everything i wonderful, facebook is absolutely useless even while suggesting ads ,google does much more invasive stuff but its handy, facebook is so pointless, bday reminders memories lol, everything is a distraction.

The only thing is Google data shouldn't be allowed to summon by court, I personally don't care about analytics or personalized ads, reminders.

Who thinks that?Plus whatsapp has improved a lot under facebook without worrying of going bankrupt.

People forget that even their email is mined by these companies for advertisement and ect... As long as these services are free I don't see anything wrong with them. I don't put out any useful information anyways.

LOL. You can't be "not ok" with it. You don't have a choice.

The moment you signed up, you agreed to it. Yeah I am talking about the terms and conditions you accepted.

what you need to realize is that this whole social networking is a new phenomena, its relatively a new industry so theres not much regulation in place and like anyother business they take advantage of the people for profit thats capitalism just like when europeans took over America they turned everyone into slaves killed them all from diseases then bought more from africa.

However as the industry evolves more regulation will come into place, so its good they are being exposed but its an industry in its infancy.

You can use VPN's and search engines that don't track your data to get around this. DuckDuckGo for example is one that is quite popular.

For past year , i have preferred Duck duck go over Google or Bing.
Tor Browser is little slower but is good for most web activity.

Data today is worth billions, soon it will be worth trillions. Facebook servers and AI utilizing my data isn't what bugs me, what bugs me is the fact that I don't get my deserved share from these tech giants. We get served pennies compared to the amount of money Facebook or Google are making of us.

The answer to this is decentralised applications. Democratisation of internet where all parties get a deserved share. Brave browser released last year was one such step in that direction, but we failed it. People need to understand that deleting Facebook or watsapp is not the answer, you simply cannot run away from it. The answer to most our concerns is supporting an alternate Internet ecosystem that isn't controlled by a handful of tech giants.

I don't know about other countries , but in India privacy just doesn't exist.
My Aadhaar card detail is pretty much spread around in many places.
Most fields like Insurance etc have made it mandatory to link policies with Aadhaar number.
For Nursery admission , i was forced to share 3 Aadhaar details (Myself , wife and my son) for which were mandatory for admission forms. So a dozen schools have this data and they are free to misuse to as they like.

Tor is a good option too, but its generally quite slow. Personally use Opera, has a built in VPN and tends to default to DuckDuckGo.

Tor is full of honeypots

Tor is only full of "honeypots" if you decide to go to that part of the internet. The browser doesn't instantly take you to these, or re-direct you to them. The search engine on Tor will not try to lead to you them purposely either, so I'm not sure what you're talking about here.

I am talking about Tor nodes the servers acting as the proxy between you and internet. Many of them are hosted by govt agencies like FBI etc so if you go through them your real ip is logged just like the vpn servers do log your ip and many vpn server also log your activity.

Oh, that makes more sense. I thought you were talking about the honey-pot websites which government agencies use to track data and IPs of people who are participating in illegal activities. As for the proxies that Tor use, I don't think they are hosted by agencies, there are only around 4000 nodes worldwide, so it's not really dependable for any resistance against any malicious activity.

I think the safest way is to enable vpn and use Tor over that vpn?

Yeah it is, make sure you use a VPN and if you want, a virtual machine. Depends on what you're using it for really. Some people go onto stuff like free-net and the deep web when they do this, but I'm assuming that's not what you're going to be using it for. :))

lol not interested to go that deep but there is no harm in learning :yk

What do they exactly do by sharing/selling data though? Give it to marketing companies? I don't see many identity theft.

They should invest in to reducing cost of internet, and help increase speed for the internet for everybody for a start.
