Few sporting rivalries feed off each other's misery quite like India-Pakistan cricket. There's an undeniable if slightly guilty, pleasure fans on both sides take when their arch-nemesis stumbles - what Germans perfectly call schadenfreude.

Cricket here is not just a game; it's an emotional rollercoaster, and each match is a new chapter in the saga of mutual sporting obsession. What are your favorite memories from this rivalry?

What is the use of enjoying others defeat, cricket needs strong pakistan, my early memories of pakistan cricket is the 97 cb series with 2 dominant teams of that era Australia & west indies and they still won the series, having seen that kind of performance it's surprising to see their decline, nowadays India Pakistan clashes have become 1 sided, no nail biters, new zealand a team which was hammered by pakistan (their dominance) ended in early 2000s, cricket needs more top teams.

1. 96' World Cup Quarter Final against India.

2. 03' World Cup against India.

I’m not a sadist person who enjoys the misery of others, especially those whom i consider my brothers by heart. Maybe when i was a very young and stupid kind of guy i would have laughed at a Pakistan defeat. Not anymore. These days every time the team doesn’t perform i am reminded of genuine fans on PP like Saj, MenInG bhai who created this forum out of love for the game and not money and all the other posters who have been contributing here since decades who have seen tough phases of Pakistan cricket, potential and then again regressive cricket. To know that they’d be gutted again would never ever make me enjoy a Pakistan defeat unless of course it is against us and even then i am becoming more humble with it now and treating it as a man. Like it’s part of the game.

Any genuine and passionate fan of the game will never enjoy to see Pakistan, West Indies, Sri Lanka regress. They were the most colourful cricket nations who provided all the joy.

As an Indian , I only enjoy Bangladesh's losses . Not that I watch their useless, talentless, ugly, brainless, immoral team. But knowing that they are losing is very satisfying .

Pakistan has my sympathies. Most talented cricket nation with high pace and hard hitters galore. I only enjoyed Afghans beating you in the World Cup and USA in World T20 but that's about it.

Of the losses against India, has to be the 2007 WT20 final.

Of the losses against others, the WT20 2024 defeat against USA. Pakistan lost two games in one - the regular fixture and then the super over. Comically bad performance.

1. 2003 World Cup
2. 2011 World Cup
3. 2007 World T20 x 2
4. 3-2 ODI series win in 2004

These are the ones for me.

As long as India is doing fine and winning titles , I dont care where pak ends up.no need to take pleasure in ur opponents loss and behave like a wannabee with out conscience.

Sorry, it's 96' World Cup Quarter Final against India. It was the sweetest. Will never forget how Ajay Jadeja violated Waqar Younis's manhood.

There's nothing wrong with taking joy in your rivals' defeats. It's basic human nature. Unless you're taking it way overboard...

Many Indian fans were jubilant when Australia knocked Pakistan out in 2021 T20 WC. Same for Pakistanis in 2023 WC final.

Part and parcel of the game. :najam

It's good to see India beat Pakistan but now it's just getting boring.

Real fun is in seeing Pakistan lose to Zimbabwe, USA or even Afghanistan. The meltdown usually is quite epic. :viru
Will never get boring till we are lagging behind them in our head to head record in Tests and ODI's.

Now a days I enjoy BD losing more, but that's hardly a rarity.

India deafening Pakistan makes me happy, rather then driving pleasure from Pakistan's loss.

However Pakistan's loss I really enjoyed involves BD in WC 99. Pakistan was freakishly good team in that world cup and seeing them struggling against micky mouse BD batters and bowlers was very funny.

Will never get boring till we are lagging behind them in our head to head record in Tests and ODI's.

No matter what the past records are, it'll eventually get boring to beat a team repeatedly as we humans are prone to recency bias. No one gives a rat's behind about what happened in the 20th century and the so called overall record which was phony as hell to even begin with.

We have beaten Pakistan 5 times in a row now and could have been 6 if not for rain in Pallekele. The last time Pakistan won even two consecutive games against us was when Manmohan Singh was the Indian PM. It's that long back... :inti

I don't object it.but the priority should be our game.as u know well, many pak fans are focussed on our loss then their improvement. I don't want ourselves to be like that as we have got a very good team to dominate for long.

It’s getting close now. In the next 10 years if h2h keeps going at the same rate, I see India winning 12 games to 2 easily. Including t20 and odi I mean

I liked Wasim Saqlain Inzi Anwar , so if PCT wasn’t playing India I liked them to win as a kid.
The Down under triangular series WI Aus and Pct, I supported PCT.
Not win a WC but such series yeah.

The only game I really enjoyed PCT lose was one with USA recently.
Against India it’s probably 2003

Every lose pf pakistan is enjoyable for me because pakistan fan's are most delusional cricket fan's in The World cricket.

Pakistan ex player's along with fan's are always looking for the conspiracy theories whenever India win something important .

:kp

2018 Asia Cup Bangladesh defeat was very enjoyable but for different reasons

Before Asia Cup Pakistan fans were so gung ho. They were super confident that Pakistan were now superior to India. Hassan Ali even said he wants to take all 10 wickets

Then India threashed Pakistan not once but twice with Hasssan Ali getting bullied badly by Rohit & Shikhar DHawan. But Pakistan fans were still not done. They claimed their team will make it to final and then take revenge - just like CT 2017. Only to end up getting thrashed by Bangladesh and got knocked out of tournament. That was so hilarious - given all the big statements coming from Pakistan fans for so many days

That defeat actually brought a lot of Pakistan fans back to ground after they were flying high since CT 2017

The last time Pakistan won even two consecutive games against us was when Manmohan Singh was the Indian PM. It's that long back... :inti
Those 2 defeats were actually a blessing in disguise for India. After that series out went Sehwag & Gambhir and in came Rohit & SHikhar DHawan as new openers in white ball cricket. Rest was history

So many games should be listed

- The 2003 ODI WC game was symbolic because it was the beginning of the turning of the tide of Indo Pak games in India's favour and the India's 90's team, young blood got their final revenge against Pakistan's aging 90's team

- 2022 T20 WC game where Pakistan lost a perfectly winnable game on a spicy bouncy pacy pitch thanks to Kohlis brilliance and Babars captaincy choking and Pakistan's pace attack ie Shaheen, Naseem, Rauf choking, Nawaz choking in the final over. This game was symbolic of the mental hold the Indian team had on the Pakistani team

- The Asia Cup ODI game in Sri Lanka. On a green Sri Lankan slow wicket, India bashed Pakistan's over hyped bowling attack of Shaheen, Naseem, Rauf to score 359 runs. Pakistan were basking on their ODI number ranking which the PCB marketed to the fullest and it took just a few hours for the Indian team to put the Pakistani team and the over rated, over hyped Pakistani players in their place. The Pakistani team never recovered from this shelacking and our super star players never recovered either.

Mohali one was a bottle job

Bro it was far more sinister than that. I watched every ball of that game live and to summarise Misbah was playing for his place in the side.

The commentators, including Ravi Shastri were perplexed by what Misbah was doing and Nick Knight, in the Sky sports studio, mentioned “I’m really angry by what I’ve just seen”. I know what he wanted to say but it’s not something an individual of his profile can say in the public domain.

Going back to the game, Misbah only started showing intent after he reached his half century. This should have been his last game of white ball cricket.

This is a bit of a myth really. Pakistan had a pretty competitive record against India even during that 2003-2006 phase and India never looked like they were clearly a better side.

The real turning point was when MSD took charge of the Indian team and beat Pakistan in the final in 2007. Pakistan has been playing catch up with India ever since that tournament and have never really come close at any point apart from one off wins.

India vs Pakistan since 2007

India won - 29

Pakistan won - 12

I feel 1996 QF was what turned the tide in India vs Pak contests. No one saw the Jadeja assault coming. It totally took out the fear factor and the aura/confidence Pakistan team used to have against India in the late 80s and early- mid 90s.

Now Pakistan might have had a better record after that 1996 game in head to head matches but that is because Pakistan had a better team than India’s during that period but still India managed to win the 99 wc match, 4-1 in the Sahara series, the epic 300+ chase in Dhaka final which was world record at that time.

2003 onwards Indian team in general has been on the upward trend with Pakistan team on the decline trend. The odd roadblocks or triumphs are there but speaking from overall perspective .

For me it is against the minnow nations..
But over the years.. We have won and lost many against Pakistan. But the most and most satisyfying loss of Pakistan for me was the 2021 Pakistan SF loss to Australia.
The kind of things ex cricketers of Pakistan said.. Kufr toot gaya, Hinduon mein Namazz etc. Babar Azam's father along with Saya Corp PR was putting reels after reels of himself as if his son has won the WC final. Statements like Islam ki jeet had just shown the kind of hatred carried against Hindus by the Pakistan ministers, ex-cricket players etc. All this was inside them but they kept losing in the World Cups.. All came out.
Afridi made fun of Indian batters for one spell. I mean it was just one spell and he was made out to be some next Wasim Akram lol. All came crashing today with that catch drop and those 3 sixes by Wade.. low and behold off Afridi.
Very very satisfying.

May be against minnows. Honestly I don't feel the rivalry at all with Pak anymore. Most of the time the excitement is due to infrequency of the matches rather than the quality of the contest

However I do enjoy routine painthas awful BD team gets from just about anyone

What about Waqar Younis's comment about Pakistani players doing Namaaz in front of 'Hindu' India in that match giving him the maximum pleasure?

i don't find pleasure in some one elses team defeats.....

But i must say Pak media and the absolute diamond Saazish pot boiliers and churners....these are gold dust - match ko chhodo yaaron....!

My pak mates do a good job of sending me these talk shows and other such 'worthies' and i must say the 'creativity' and 'imagination' in the 'doosron ka saazish' hit the spot give za buzz flicks a switch and keeps lot of boats afloat!!!! :) :ua

So you hate Pakistan cause of the fans themselves and not the actual players in the same way you hate Australia cause of me?

Weird logic, just isolate yourself from the crowd and problem solved 🤣

My most memorable India vs Pakistan matches are as follows:

1992 Sydney – I didn’t watch this match live since I was an infant back then, but I later watched it on YouTube. Sachin Tendulkar’s innings, the infamous Kiran More vs. Javed Miandad altercation, and Javagal Srinath’s yorker to Miandad were the standout moments.

1996 Bangalore – I barely remember watching this live as a very young boy. Wasim Akram’s absence in the morning became big news. Then came Ajay Jadeja’s blitz with Tony Greig’s legendary commentary, followed by the heated exchange between Aamir Sohail and Venkatesh Prasad.

1999 Manchester – India was already out of the tournament by then, and beating Pakistan was the only saving grace. Tendulkar charging down Wasim Akram in the very first over, in swinging conditions, was a statement of confidence. He was going well before playing a mindless shot to get out—still hurts. I remember a dropped catch off Debashish Mohanty’s bowling, Azharuddin taking some brilliant catches in the slips, and the prized wicket of Moin Khan. Once Moin got out, I knew we were winning. We then went out and burst firecrackers to rub it in the faces of the Jaychands in our mohalla who used to support Pakistan.

2003 Centurion – Ah, where do I even start? So many memories. Due to a power cut, I couldn’t watch the toss live, and my cousin called our landline to tell me Pakistan was batting. Saeed Anwar played a masterful knock, giving me flashbacks of those 90s Sharjah matches. But then I reminded myself—this was the new India under Sourav Ganguly. Zaheer Khan flooring Rashid Latif with a bouncer was the statement. For me that was the turning point and kind of passing the baton moment in Ind Pak rivalry. That bouncer shifted the mindset which started by that Miandad six. Nevertheless, going back into the match, a good late flourish by Wasim Akram, and then that knock by Tendulkar. His first cover drive off Wasim, the crisp sound of the bat—ufff! And then, those boundaries and six off Shoaib Akhtar in the next over—uffffff! Another power cut struck, and when the power came back, India was 2 down with Ganguly gone first ball. But this was the new India remember? So no panic. Along with Sachin, Kaif, Dravid and Yuvraj ensured victory. Post-match, Sachin revealed how he had been waiting for this game for years. Once again, we went out to rub it in the faces of the Bihari Jaychands in my neighbourhood.

2007 Durban – What even is this format? A bowl-out? Ah, this felt good when the likes of Umar Gul, Yasir Arafat, and Shahid Afridi missed the stumps, while Sehwag, Harbhajan, and Uthappa hit the timber. MS Dhoni completely outsmarted Pakistan.

2007 Johannesburg – Who is this opener, Yusuf Pathan? Smashing Mohammad Asif for a six first ball? Must be good. Imran Nazir was taking the game away, but India made a stunning comeback. Then came the introduction of Misbah-ul-Haq and that scoop shot. This game gave birth to the IPL.

2011 Mohali – The greatest Indo-Pak match of all time. This game had a build up of 5 days when the only thing news channels were talking about was this match. I still remember our HR emailing us to spend a few hours in the office before we could watch the game on big screens in the cafeteria. What a start by Sehwag! Saeed Ajmal was doing crazy things with the ball, and how lucky was Sachin with four dropped chances? Brilliant Raina at the end, a terrible shot by Hafeez, an awful innings from Misbah, Munaf Patel’s dream delivery to Razzaq, and finally, that last catch by Kohli. Feels like yesterday.

2012 Colombo – By this time, I had moved to the UK and was looking for a cricket discussion forum. That’s how I discovered this platform, initially as a lurker. I remember this match for Balaji's bowling and, of course, Kohli, who came in after that monstrous 183 a month prior.

2013 Edgbaston – Indian fans were only thinking about Junaid Khan and getting revenge for the Aane Do series. In the end, it was a boring one-sided win for India, with Dhawan charging down and smacking Junaid all over the park.

2014 Dhaka – By this time, Kohli had already established his dominance over Pakistan. However, India came into this match after losing to Pakistan in the Asia Cup, where Afridi smashed two sixes off Ashwin. This time, though, India was at full strength, with Dhoni and MVP Raina back. A one-sided victory for India—or rather, Kohli single-handedly beating Pakistan. The only highlight for Pakistan was Bilawal Bhatti dismissing Yuvraj Singh first ball.

2015 Adelaide – I was a forum member by then :censored:, and Break the Streak was the slogan here, amplified by the Mauka Mauka ad. Then came Sohail Khan’s “Ghar ka Kohli” comment. The hype was surreal. Kohli’s century was scratchy but effective, with Raina providing momentum. Younis Khan opening the batting and getting bounced out by Shami in the first over set the tone. Umesh Yadav getting back to back wickets of Sehzad and Maqsood. Afridi slogging mindlessly as usual and Misbah tried to do only as much. Sohail Khan tried to pick a silly fight with Kohli but Misbah scolded him and asked him to focus on the game. Pakistan never looked in the game—it was no contest.

2016 Kolkata – A rain-shortened 18-over contest, but as expected, no real competition. Mohammad Amir dismissing Rohit Sharma early and Shami getting Raina for a golden duck was Pakistan’s only moment. But once again, Kohli took the game away single-handedly.

2019 Manchester – Again, no contest. Rohit Sharma smashing Pakistan all over, Kohli doing his thing, and Hardik Pandya causing havoc with the ball. This game will always be remembered for the "Ekdum se waqt badal diye, jazbaat badal diye" meme. :ROFLMAO:

2022 MCG – One of the best T20 matches ever. This was during that brief period, starting in October 2021, when Pakistan was on par or slightly ahead of India in T20s. Even in this game, Pakistan was winning until the 17th over of the second innings. Then those two Kohli sixes changed everything. What a knock. What a game.

2023 Ahmedabad – From the start, the crowd was in full WWE Attitude Era mode, booing Pakistan. As expected, it was one-sided, but the hostile atmosphere made it even more memorable.

2024 New York – The least-watched India vs. Pakistan game in India due to the general elections. However, this game was all about Bumrah and how he single-handedly defended 120 runs. Imad Wasim’s knock and his running between the wickets looked fishy at times. :censored:

2025 Dubai – Hahaha! This game will always be remembered for battles off the ground—the hybrid model and PCB’s stance on not bowing down to money. The match itself was as one-sided as expected, with Pakistan never in the contest. Kohli’s century, even at this stage of his career, was a breath of fresh air.

Chip in the ball to Baees pandits.. the journey continues to be awesome

I know there has been some epic wins for India against Pakistan but the 2 wins in Asia cup 2018 were the most enjoyable and satisfactory. Pakistan deserved all the plaudits and appreciations for their Champions Trophy win but I think the players actually went overboard at that time. To bring them down to earth in that fashion was particularly satisfying. Also the 2019 WC game following the Asia cup wins. Also those 3 wins started another streak for India as Pakistan is yet to win an ODI game against India since that CT 2017 finals.

My personal opinions 2011WC SF and 2007 WC were the best bcos that led to tournament victories. For pure visceral nature, the 96 QF watching live was bonkers. Pak was the huge fave in 96 and Ind shattered the Miandad bubble forever from this game.

Have been happy/relieved regarding quite a few wins -
1996 QF @ Bangalore
2011 WC @ Mohali
2007 T20 WC final
2022 T20 WC @ MCG
2024 T20 WC @ NYC

But the most satisfying was that 2023 Asia cup epic phainty of the ‘no.1 ranked ODI team’ & the ‘no.1 bowling attack in the world’. PCT never recovered after that match.

The number of times Kohli has been mentioned here, what a beast. :kohli

My personal opinions 2011WC SF and 2007 WC were the best bcos that led to tournament victories. For pure visceral nature, the 96 QF watching live was bonkers. Pak was the huge fave in 96 and Ind shattered the Miandad bubble forever from this game.

And to top it off it was the manner in which he got out trying for his usual method of running quick singles and twos without realizing that he was almost 40 yrs old lol.

Bonus points for the Bengaluru crowd for giving him a very hostile send-off in what would be his final match for Pakistan.

And I am most certain that he regrets considering that he will most likely never see Pakistan top Ind in ICC events in his lifetime.

To me this is the most electric Cricket match ever played between any 2 teams in the history of cricket. Period!. I was sweating just watching the match when was in the peak age and fitness of my life !!! What a day that was !!

You're a legend man, I always enjoy your posts whilst I breeze through some others lol. We need posters like you on this forum to give it a soul!

Keep it going Bhaijaan ...

For a small period of time I put myself in the shoes of an Indian fan. It was a horrible experiment

Apart from India defeating Pakistan I reckon Pak losing to USA would have given the most joy as Pakistan were humbled by a software developer.

So you hate Pakistan cause of the fans themselves and not the actual players in the same way you hate Australia cause of me?

Weird logic, just isolate yourself from the crowd and problem solved 🤣
Why wud u hate the players ?

they are mostly nice humble chaps. None of them behave like a Floyd Mayweather. Its the fans who generally create toxic environment

True for most sports tbh

Pakistan fans generally go overboard after a win. They don't know the limits of decency & dignity. Saw this after the 2021 T20 WC win. Remember seeing posts about Pakistani players are bigger & stronger bcoz of superior diet / beef / religion - bit weird given Rizwan is so tiny and Babar looks so skinny. Waqar Younis proudly telling how he liked watching Rizwan doing Namaz in front of Hindu players - weird bcoz Pakistan keeps telling that religion / politics should be kept away from sport. These things are very distasteful and unsportsmanlike. No wonder Indian fans now come hard after every win !

I would never put myself in the shoes of a Pakistani fan.. I will explode out of fear.

@DeadlyVenom - from my list (post#41), which one is your most memorable match from a Pakistani pov?

:qdkcheeky
Mohali. I watched it with friends. We had belief we would win. One of the best moments of my cricket watching experience was wahabs ball to Yuvraj. Uff the way we celebrated that ball after a moment of stunned silence.

The match ended tamely but it had some good moments that i will always remember.

followed by MCG- You have to admire Kohlis cool nature to finish the game in a tense situation infront of a packed crowd.

Then don't interact with the crowd. No one is forcing you to take comments online seriously, it's none of your business.

I really like the banter between Devdal and you, it's like watching Wasim Akram vs Adam Gichrist.

Its the era of social media. U cannot stay away from the noise. Ugly reality of modern day sport
It's still a you problem lol. 🤣🤣.

I don't take any of you all seriously to the point that I'd associate actual hate for something.

Great list @Rajdeep 👍. One more memorable game for me apart from the ones Rajdeep listed is the independence cup final vs Pakistan in 1998 where India made a world record chase (for that time) 300+. In those days team batting first got 300 means game over 9/10 times. That too India was still a middling team and didn’t score 300 often till that point.

Mods it would be interesting to see the other side of this in a separate thread ...

So:

As a Pak fan, which of Indian losses have you enjoyed the most?

No matter what the past records are, it'll eventually get boring to beat a team repeatedly as we humans are prone to recency bias.

The fun to be had starts after the match is over. The meltdown on Social media and here on PP ... that invariably follows any hammering of Pakistan is just priceless entertainment.

Who are those delusional fans expecting pak victory with that squad .one of my pak friend here in Aus said most of the pak fans here have given up before it starts and other few delusion fans who brought tickets were waiting in their car in Adelaide as there was no accommodation. Those guys were later ridiculed by pak fans themselves .

2003 World Cup. A Tendulkar special to the end the careers of Wasim and Waqar and to thoroughly emasculate Shoaib that he would never recover for the rest of his career, but would go on to have an eating disorder.

Close at its heel, 1996 World Cup. Ended Miandad and the Prasad - Sohail confrontation is the textbook example of hubris followed by nemesis.
