I have never understood, why is this guy even in PSL, playing T20?

He is rubbish, no offense, he should be no where near any ODI, let alone T20.

Most professional franchises would have ditched him but because the captain of the team is his best friend he won't be dropped. In all 3 years he's been rubbish but he is still a regular.

Sick of the team selections in the PSL this year. Apart from Islamabad (even they have there faults) no franchise seems interested in promoting Pakistani talent.

Sarfraz is comfortable yelling at his friends and juniors instead of overseas and senior players...

Its not just PSL but even in the international team as well. I don't understand how this guy keeps getting picked. Friendship shouldn't be the reason for a selection

Sarfu wants him in the team. What can we do. Nothing but get tortured.

lol where is his technique? His bat is always pointing to midwicket in all the shots he plays. Such a waste of space even in tests if he is still going to remain such a mediocre batsman.

Do you think his performances in the upcoming tests vs Ireland, England will be crucial to his place in the side? Or is he in it for the long haul until age catches up to him?

Asad shafiq: An unfair selection in the PSL

A lot of Pakistani domestic cricketers dream of playing in the PSL. It allows them a chance to express their talent to the world and earn a handsome pay. In my view, it’s very sad to see someone like Shafiq blocking ball after ball. He is clearly not a limited overs players.

Sure he is great friends with the Captain, but seriously how is this guy picked ahead of specialist t20 openers like Mukhtar Ahmed and Nauman Anwar?

The nice thing about leagues like PSL and IPL is that the people doing the selections have a strong desire to pick a winning team, unlike the selectors of the national team who often give greater weight to their biases. So if Shafiq has been picked ahead of another player, I would say that it may have been a mistake but was at least not favoritism.

Nope, not true for Quetta. They make most of their picks from a club in Karachi

Not that I support his place in the team, but you never know. For Asad in the upcoming games, when his back is against the wall, he could unleash the beast within :vk:warner (although I highly doubt it).

He's played better than the overrated Amin.

Lahore could use a player like him.

He's a young kid still. Playing games and taking names. The promised golden boy of our generation. Give him time.

same asad and khurram were making world record partnerships in domestic ODI cup and PPrs were calling for their selection

Asad Shafiq has a very poor international record in the shorter format. The average is poor but the damning statistic is his SR. His SR at the highest level is 67 and 103 in ODI and T20I respectively. So clearly looks not a LO material. His list A stats aren't bad though 41 at SR of 81. So probably that's the reason he is playing in PSL.

One thing is sure even if he fails 10 times in a row in PSL, Quetta will still select him 11th time.

To summarize Shafiq would be to quote him after he was in the spotlight after a great performance in ENG:
“I want to do things very simply and quietly”.
No motivation to be a star or punch above his weight. A chicken hearted frivolous player who will never achieve beyond the line of mediocrity.

He has had a terrible tournament so far.

Such a shame others aren't getting a chance instead of him.

Umar Amin is opening for Pakistan in T20Is. Yet he can't get a game over a man who isn't considered good enough to play limited over internationals. Regionalism and nepotism will always haunt Pakistan. And I say this while being from Karachi.

Saud and Saad should hand in transfer requests if they're not gonna get a game ahead of this Shafiq master blaster:shafiq2

I hope someone asks sarfraz ask why he plays him ramiz and Anwar Ali.

7 innings, 116 runs, average of 19, strike rate of 100. This season.

What performance by da Masta Blasta! :moyo2

Batting as an opener and struggling to hit over the top exposes his limitations as an attacking batsman.

I like Safraz but we can all agree that this is pure nepotism. Asad Shafiq does not deserve to play ahead of Saud and Saad who are two of the most highly rated young batting talents in Pakistan.

Moin Khan in the management doesn't help as well. He has already gotten his son a hefty paycheck for doing absolutely nothing.

it just ridiculous

Asad is one of the most fortunate men in the history of cricket. Both Misbah and Sarfraz love him and thats the main reason why he has played as much as he has.

Surely he has to go now for Quette. At least give Saad Ali a go

Really sick of watching batsmen like Asad, Kamran, Umar, and Sohaib getting opportunity after opportunity.

Nadeem Omar, Moin Khan and Sarfraz drilling holes into PP posters since 3 years now :))) :)))

He will continue to play! Make your peace with it :shafiq2

Anwar Ali's selection is more questionable.. he bats at number 8, bowls 2 overs somewhere and yet he has the highest economy in all of PSL

Painfully limited. He's the embodiment of the Misbah era and it's anti-dynamic style of batting. Painful to watch him in anything but tests. If you don't have the strokemaking ability, you are a wasted investment, move on and gamble on an unproven quantity instead of this guy.

Disgusted with this "youngster" full of technique that I fail to see. I pray he never plays televised cricket ever again.

Believe it or not these franchises don't give a damn if they win or loose or find some decent talent for Pakistan. These leagues are money making machine and PCB is ok with that as long they get a big chunk of money.
Only way to stop them to do this is
1. to select pool of players where deserving players get chances mostly young ones and no TTFS
2. Make 1 team to relegate each year
3. Let 2-3 emerging players play each team
4. Preferably make one PCB U-19 XI under reputable captain

With Jason Roy coming into the squad, Asad Shafiq's time is up.

Dream on. Jason roy's time is up even before joining the tournament. He isnt fit to tie Shafiq's shoe laces as per Quetta's logic.

Just because Shafiq is petite and slight , many people are forgetting he isnt a 19 year old out there to fill the emerging player quota.

Jason Roy is here. Quetta can now play him instead of Asad Shafiq.

Relegate to what? This isn't a multi tier league. Besides there are still only six teams and the goal is to try to add more teams rather than subtract. Just improve the quality of the players and management of a non performing team.

Nawaz, he's scored one boundary by chopping it, one top edge and one through the legs of the fielder. Yet to see him actually score a real run

If certified failures like Umar Akmal and Ahmed Shehzad can be awarded platinum and gold contracts then I don't see the issue of Asad being part of any squad.

PCB should not let Asad Shafiq in the draft for next PSL4.

1. Who is stopping that now? And, who is going to do that - Ul Haq? Misbah? Wasim? Sarfraz? Owners are filthy rich people, they have better things to do than analyzing cricket for 2 hours a day. Moin, Sarfraz, Eazzak, Viv ...... then Asad is playing and Anwar played all 11 games; while Ramdhin was hired for $..... (God knows) to keep wicket.

2. Not possible, until there are 2 divisions. You can't throw the last team out of PSL, after investing for 10 years

3. Horrible idea - then from son, to nephew will start to play PSL. Should be opposite - NO emerging quota, rather every player should be picked on merit. Put a cap on Buzurgs - 2 over 35, 5/6 (including those 2) over 29 including foreigners in playing XI. Put an average age cap for the teams - may be U29 for squad, & U28 for playing XI. Otherwise, what they'll do is from Saud, to Farhan (in between Fahim, Amad, Asghar, Shadab ...... even Hasan) - everyone in emerging quota and then 2 of them plays for $25K draft, rest carries kit bag; while Misbah will enjoy Diamond contract till 2035.

4. That'll dilute the quality and kids won't learn anything - if you take the best student in country of St. 10, to Engineering 1st year, bypassing High School (intermediate in south Asia) - chances are almost certain that he might drop out in 1st semester. Better idea is to force every PSL team to maintain a U19 & A team set-up; instead of those Hunting games (for Talunt) - proper coaching staff, a retainer fee (doesn't need to be $25K/year), kits & medical benefits .... and arrange PSL U19, PSL - A tournaments, during off seasons. And, for God's sake - not T20 for those tournaments - best is 4 day game, if not at least 50 overs game.
