Ashley Cole has retired from international football after being left out of the England World Cup squad by Roy Hodgson. According to the Daily Mirror, Manchester United's Ashley Young, Michael Carrick and Tom Cleverley will also miss out. The players confirmed to make it to Brazil are Steven Gerrard, Joe Hart, Wayne Rooney, Ross Barkley, Leighton Baines, Glenn Johnson, Phil Jagielka, Luke Shaw, Jordan Henderson, Frank Lampard, Adam Lallana, James Milner and Daniel Sturridge. Chris Smalling, Danny Welbeck, Rickie Lambert and Phil Jones are also expected to make the cut, while Kyle Walker might miss out.

Ashley Cole has retired from international football after being told he would not be in England's World Cup squad.

Chelsea left-back Cole, 33, has struggled for playing time with his club this season, with Spaniard Cesar Azpilicueta having been preferred by Jose Mourinho.

Although he has been involved more towards the end of the campaign, Cole has been supplanted by Everton's Leighton Baines and, most likely, Southampton teenager Luke Shaw.

The decision brings an end to a lengthy international career for Cole, who made his England debut against Albania in 2001 and has won 107 caps since.

Cole wrote on his Twitter feed: "I got the call from Roy and agree England team should be about the young players. I think it best I retire from England team now.

"We have a great manager and team and I wish them only success. I will be supporting them like a true fan. Thanks to everyone for everything.

"Baines and Shaw are great players, proved this season, and are the future of this country, it was a pleasure to get 107 caps."

The full-back positions have been subject of plenty of conjecture ahead of Roy Hodgson's squad announcement on Monday afternoon, with Cole's position in question and worries about the availability of Tottenham right-back Kyle Walker.

Walker is struggling with a pelvic injury and if Hodgson's medical staff fear he will not be 100% fit, it could be Manchester United's Phil Jones - also under an injury cloud - heading to Brazil as a back-up to likely starter Glen Johnson.

Cole's omission suggests Hodgson is happy to take a youthful squad to Brazil and could mean a call for Everton midfielder Ross Barkley, who enjoyed a productive end to the season.

Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling and midfielder Jordan Henderson, Arsenal forward Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Southampton winger Adam Lallana - all lacking international experience - are also in contention for the 23-man squad which will be named at 2pm.

Former England international Ashley Cole has retired at the age of 38.

The left-back won the Champions League, Premier League, League Cup and Europa League throughout his career, as well as a record seven FA Cups.

Cole represented his country 107 times, while making 338 appearances for Chelsea and 227 for Arsenal at club level.

He spent two seasons at Roma between 2014 and 2016 before moving to MLS side LA Galaxy.

Cole joined Derby County in January, playing under former Chelsea teammate Frank Lampard for six months before calling time on his career.

Footballer Ashley Cole tied up during violent robbery and threatened with having fingers cut off, court hears

The gang is also accused of targeting the home of ex-Spurs midfielder Tom Huddlestone and of stealing a historically-important diamond tiara worn at Edward VII's coronation.

Both Ashley Cole and Tom Huddlestone were victims of a 'extremely serious, high-profile, carefully planned' robberies

A robber threatened to cut former England footballer Ashley Cole's fingers off with pliers during a violent break-in at his home, a court has heard.

Nottingham Crown Court was told the ex-Arsenal, Chelsea and Derby County left-back was cable-tied and led around the house in just a pair of shorts during the ordeal.

Kurtis Dilks, 34, is accused of being part of a four-strong gang who in January 2020 smashed their way into the home of the former England defender and his partner Sharon Canu with a sledgehammer before stealing jewellery, mobile phones and a BMW key.

The couple's two young children were in the house at the time and Ms Canu had tried to call police as she hid in a wardrobe.

But, prosecutor Michael Brady QC, told the court: "The next thing Ms Canu knew was when one of the robbers opened the wardrobe door and took the phone from her while she was talking to the police.

"She then saw Mr Cole on his knees with his hands tied behind his back."

Mr Brady said the robbers then tried to bound Ms Canu's hands but at first "rather bravely" she refused.

"That bravery understandably evaporated to a certain extent when she was threatened with a knife," he added.

The court heard Dilks was also accused of raiding the home of ex-Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Tom Huddlestone - and is further facing accusations of being part of a six-strong gang who allegedly stole the £3.75 million Portland Tiara from the Welbeck Estate in 2018.

The tiara was worn to the coronation of Edward VII.

Prosecutors said its theft, previously described as a "national treasure", was a "shocking event" and it will never again be seen in its original state.

Mr Brady told jurors Mr Huddlestone's home was targeted in a "well-planned operation" while he was playing a match for Derby County.

Dilks, Ashley Cumberpatch and Andrew MacDonald are accused of conspiring to rob Mr Huddlestone's wife, Joanna Dixon, of £500,000 of jewellery and handbags, including her wedding and engagement rings.

Jurors were told robbers tied Ms Dixon's hands behind her back with cable ties, with one saying: "Don't make this difficult, we don't want to manhandle you."

Mr Brady told the jury the defendants were "to a greater or lesser extent involved in a series of extremely serious, high-profile, carefully planned and at times ruthlessly executed burglaries and violent robberies".

He said the accused had not been deterred by people in the houses as they were "armed with weapons and the means to subdue them" and even the presence of children "did not perturb them".

Mr Brady told jurors that property stolen during the burglaries and robberies was passed to professional handlers Tevfik Guccuk and Sercan Evsin, who were tasked with selling it.

At the time they ran an "ostensibly legitimate jewellery business in Hatton Garden".

He continued: "Such was the value and conspicuous nature of some of the items stolen that it was not possible to sell them in the UK.

"The inference to be drawn from the evidence is that at times the property had to be disposed of abroad."

Historical importance

The court heard the diamond-encrusted Portland Tiara - and an associated brooch - that was stolen in a separate raid had a combined value of £3.75 million.

The 6th Duke of Portland had commissioned Cartier to create the Portland Tiara for his wife, Winifred, Duchess of Portland.

She wore the headpiece, whose centrepiece is the Portland Diamond, to the coronation of King Edward VII, the Queen's great-grandfather, in 1902.

Mr Brady said: "It is difficult to overstate the importance and cultural value of these pieces of jewellery.

"Other works of art that formed part of the same collection included masterpieces by Michelangelo, van Dyck, Stubbs and a pearl earring worn by Charles I at his execution.

"These were trophy pieces of the gallery's exhibition - extremely valuable, unique and of significant historical importance.

"They were displayed for the public's enjoyment. Their theft is a shocking event and means that they will never again be seen in their original state.

"It is self-evident that burglaries of this nature require detailed and careful planning, including consideration of how to dispose of such unique pieces."

Cumberpatch, his partner Kelly Duong, MacDonald, Dilks, and fellow defendants Matthew Johnson and Adrian Eddishaw are all accused of conspiracy to burgle in relation to the theft of the tiara.

The defendants deny all charges.

The trial continues.

Robberies of footballers houses are a regular thing now.

I dont understand why they dont have expert secuirty guards taking care of their homes 24/7. The money they have its nothing.

Ronaldo does it the best, he has two ex elite special forces soldiers following him everywhere he goes.

Former England star Ashley Cole told police "I knew now, I am going to die" as masked raiders smashed into his home and tied his hands.

Kurtis Dilks, 34, is charged with being part of the gang who allegedly smashed their way into Mr Cole and his partner Sharon Canu's home with a sledgehammer and threatened to cut the ex-footballer's fingers off.

A man has been convicted of breaking into the house of Ashley Cole with the star receiving threats during the raid that he would have his fingers cut off.

Kurtis Dilks, 35, was part of a gang that smashed into the former Premier League defender's house wearing masks on 21 January 2020.

"I was on my knees, waiting to be killed," Cole said in footage of an interview shown at Nottingham Crown Court.

He told police he "knew" he was going to die as the raiders tied his hands behind his back despite him holding his young daughter.

Dilks was the only one of the gang to be caught after his DNA was found on cable ties used to restrain Cole and his partner, Sharon Canu, the court heard.

The 35-year-old courier claimed his DNA was discovered on the ties, and also on a knife recovered from the scene in Fetcham, Surrey, because those items had previously been stolen from his van.

Nevertheless, he was convicted alongside five others over a string of robberies and burglaries between October 2018 and January 2020.

A man who broke in to the home of former England footballer Ashley Cole with a sledgehammer and threatened to cut off his fingers has been jailed for 30 years.

Kurtis Dilks, 35, was part of a gang that smashed into Cole's house wearing masks in January 2020.

Dilks was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court after the judge described them as "intelligent, violent and chillingly ruthless men".

The former England footballer told police he "knew" he was going to die as they tied his hands behind his back despite him holding his young daughter.

Cole told officers: "I was on my knees, waiting to be killed."

He said in a statement read in court: "The terror and confusion on my children's face is something that will never leave me.

"These images and thoughts will never, ever leave my mind and can pop up any time."
