Pakistan will lock horns against India on August 28 in Asia Cup 2022, as per reports.

According to details, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) will host the tournament next month. India, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh have already sealed their spots for the tournament, while the likes of UAE, Nepal, Oman, Hong Kong and others will play qualifiers, which are set to begin from August 21 as per reports.

The main round of the competition will start from August 27.

India will likely clash with Pakistan on August 28 and it will be the first time the two opponents square off on international stage since the 2021 T20 World Cup in UAE, where they met during the group stage.

Pakistan had beaten India by ten wickets then - their first ever victory against them in a world cup match. The Babar Azam-led team finished as the semi-finalist while India exited in the group stage.

The latest edition of Asia Cup will be played in T20 format. It was originally scheduled to be held in 2020 but was postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic. India are the defending champions, having beaten Bangladesh in the final in 2018 to win a record sixth title.

It must be noted India will enter the tournament as defending champions as they defeated Bangladesh in the final of the last edition of the Asia Cup.

What concerns me as a Pakistani supporter is that Pakistan are favourites and that is very concerning.

We barely do well when we are expected to do well.

That is an honest concern but India don't have players this time. There are news that Kohli will be dropped from T20 squad and Rahul won't be fit until mid September. Pakistan should be able to deal with below players:

India definitely better team atleast on paper. This chest thumping from most Pakistani posters will end up in a same way as it was in 2018 Asia Cup.

Where all Pakistani posters declared Pakistan as winners as soon as BCCI left Kohli out.

In that team, we should drop Jadeja as Hooda will fill sixth option. Pant is important in middle overs as he is a spin destroyer, a left hander and can play 360 degree cricket which quite a few greats of the game played and in process revolutionized modern day LOI cricket.

It's the other way round. Our ODI team is not that good. We are ranked lower than Pakistan and we got smashed 3-0 in SA not too long ago.

Despite that shocking 10 wicket thrashing, I think we still have a small chance of fluking a win against Pakistan in T20's.
 
India will win the Asia cup game, call it as revenge for WT20. Then following upto lose the match down under later when stakes will be a lot higher

Amid the ongoing crisis in Sri Lanka, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) will take a decision later this month on whether it is possible to host the Asia Cup in the island nation from August 27. While the Sri Lanka Cricket officials are optimistic, Bangladesh has been floated as a standby.

“The ACC is monitoring the situation and will make a decision in its meeting later this month, keeping all factors in mind,” a source aware of the development, told Sportstar.

Earlier, Sri Lanka Cricket had expressed its willingness to host the tournament after successfully conducting the men’s series against Australia and the tour of India’s women’s team.

But things took a dramatic turn last week as the Presidential Palace was stormed by protesters and the Prime Minister’s residence was set on fire. In the current scenario, the ACC does not want to take any chances, and with not much time left to find an alternative, Bangladesh is being considered as a back-up option.

India, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh have already sealed their spots, while the likes of UAE, Nepal, Oman, Hong Kong will play qualifiers, to be held from August 21. The Asia Cup was originally scheduled to be held in 2020, but it got postponed due to COVID-19.

With the T20 World Cup scheduled to be held in Australia in October-November, teams like India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are looking at the Asia Cup as a preparation ground for the ICC event. And, sources have indicated that with the volatile political situation in Sri Lanka, not many cricket Boards are confident of sending their teams, forcing the ACC to look at an alternative.

Neither the ACC officials nor the Bangladesh Cricket Board were available for a comment at the time of publishing the story.

The last time the Asia Cup was held in the United Arab Emirates in 2018, India won the title under Rohit Sharma, defeating Bangladesh in the final.

Ahead of Asia Cup scheduled to be held in August in Sri Lanka, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly on Thursday said that the board will keep monitoring the situation in the island nation amid the ongoing political and economic crisis there. "I cannot comment at the moment (about the possibility of India hosting the event). We will keep monitoring (the situation in Sri Lanka). Australia is playing there. The Sri Lankan team is also doing well. I cannot comment at the moment. Let us wait for a month," the BCCI president told ANI.

Sri Lanka had recently hosted Australia for a multi-format series. The series was highly competitive and saw good cricket from both sides. Australia won the T20I series 2-1, the ODI series was won by Sri Lanka 3-2, while the Warne-Murli Trophy in Tests was shared after the two-match series ended in a 1-1 draw.

Ganguly also spoke about the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic during his tenure as BCCI president.

"But we managed to get cricket going and as you know, broadcast rights have gone exceptionally well. Although I never equate money with the sport, but it is always good to have money because infrastructure is built that way. Indian cricket is in a solid position. As and when we will finish, someone else will come in and take it forward. It is the players and administrators who will take the game forward," said Ganguly.

The TV and digital rights for the 2023-2027 cycle went to Star India and Viacom18 respectively for a whopping Rs 48,390 crore for 410 matches at e-auctions in June.

The IPL digital rights went at a higher price than the TV as Viacom18 bought it for Rs 23,758 crore in comparison to Star India who won TV rights for Rs 23,575 crore. Reliance-owned Viacom-18 also won Australia, South Africa and United Kingdom rights. Times have got MENA (Middle East North Africa) and the United States and the Rest of the World Rights.

Two major ICC events are set to take place in the near future - the T20 World Cup in 2022 and the 50-over World Cup in 2023.

Speaking about the high expectations from India in these tournaments, the BCCI president said, "You do not win ICC tournaments all the time. They (India) were in the finals of the Champions Trophy in 2017 and they lost in the semis in the 2019 WC. It has not been that they have been absolutely poor in World Cups but as you rightly said whenever India plays the expectations are more of winning. They are a great side they have some fantastic players and hopefully when it comes to Australia this time, they will stand up and deliver."

Reports on Wednesday suggested that the Asian Cricket Council has also put Bangladesh on standby as hosts for the Asia Cup, which Sri Lanka was due to hold next month.

SLC chief executive Ashley de Silva said on Wednesday that not being able to host the Asia Cup would result in a loss of US$5-6 Million in revenue.

“Big revenues get generated by hosting teams like India and Pakistan,” de Silva was quoted as saying by the InsideSport website. “That’s why we are still trying to persuade the countries to play in Sri Lanka. For us revenues are critical. At this stage even for our country any incoming dollar is critical. We are all geared up to host the Asia Cup and we all are in a positive mood.”

The Asia Cup is "likely" to be moved out of Sri Lanka in the wake of political unrest in the island nation, SLC secretary Mohan de Silva said on Sunday, adding that the tournament could be played in the UAE. Sri Lanka, which has been battling an economic crisis, has witnessed widespread protests against the government for weeks.

However, the situation worsened with president Gotabaya Rajapaksa fleeing the country on a military jet.

"The Asia Cup is very likely that it will be held in the UAE," Sri Lanka Cricket secretary de Silva told PTI when asked about a possible change in the venue of the T20 tournament.

The dates for the six-team tournament are expected to remain the same as scheduled earlier from August 26 to September 11.

A qualifier will also take place before the main event with Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuwait and UAE battling out for the one qualification spot.

Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, India and Bangladesh will be the five full member teams.

With Australia tour of Sri Lanka going off smoothly and Pakistan currently playing Test cricket in Sri Lanka, there were hopes that the SLC might be able to host the continental event.

The tournament serves as good preparation for the Asian teams ahead of the T20 World Cup in Australia in October-November.

An official announcement from the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) on the change in tournament venue is expected soon. The ACC is headed by BCCI secretary Jay Shah.

Pakistan Cricket Board on Saturday said that it wanted Asia Cup to be played in Sri Lanka.

"Our first preference is to support Sri Lanka and play the Asia Cup there. If this tournament does not take place in Sri Lanka, it will be a huge cricketing and financial loss for them. Australia's recent tour of Sri Lanka went off without any problems," said PCB chief executive Faisal Hasnain in a statement.

If it's Bangladesh I hope pitches are of proper standard, not those low slow crumbly pitches which Bangladesh serve up visitors to rack up easy wins.

It is in Bangladesh's interest too, to put up good pitches.

Why isn't UAE being considered?
 
Will be a mouth watering contest with Indians trying hard to prove they are better. After the customary Rohit Sharma LBW or bowled to an indipper from Shaheen in the first over, it should be a good game.

Pros of games in UAE:

No chance of rain (monsoon season otherwise in subcontinent)

Fans can travel in large numbers due to ease of accesibility to and from Dubai.


Cons of games in UAE:

Very hot at time of the year. In last Asia cup, Pandya broke down in the very 1st game and had to be lifted out.

The development comes after the SLC recently postponed the third edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) due to the ongoing crisis.

"Sri Lankan cricket has conveyed that due to the existing political and economic situation in their country specially where foreign exchange is concerned it is not an ideal situation for them to host such a mega-event of six teams in the island," an ACC source said.

The official stated that the SLC officials conveyed that they would like to host the country in the UAE or some other country.

The official also added that the ACC is likely to make an announcement in the next few days, given the Asia Cup is slated to be held in August and September this year before the T20 World Cup in Australia.

"UAE is not the final replacement venue, it could be some other country, even India as the ACC, Sri Lanka cricket will first have to talk with Emirates Cricket Board officials to get final approval for the event," the official said.

The 2022 edition of the Asia Cup has been officially shifted to UAE due to the political turmoil in Sri Lanka. The country is going through a massive economical and political crisis and hosting a multi-national event was a massive task.

The Sri Lanka Cricket Board recently expressed its inability to host the marquee event in the country to the Asian Cricket Council post which it became certain that the tournament will be hosted in UAE. Sri Lanka though will retain the hosting rights.

The tournament will be played from August 27 to September 11.

“Considering the prevailing situation in Sri Lanka, the ACC after extensive deliberation has unanimously concluded that it would be appropriate to relocate the tournament from Sri Lanka to UAE,” a release from the Asian Cricket Council read.

Sri Lanka recently hosted Australia for a multi-format series and things were looking promising in terms of hosting the Asia Cup. However, the situation got worse when the president fled the country and new president took over.

“We were really looking forward to hosting our Asian neighbours in Sri Lanka for the much-anticipated Asia Cup,” SLC President Shammi Silva said.

“While I fully stand by the ACC’s decision to shift the Asia Cup to UAE considering the current context and magnitude of the event, Sri Lanka cricket will work closely with the ACC and the Emirates Cricket Board to ensure that we still have an exciting edition of the Asia Cup.”

The six-nation tournament will be played in the T20I format. India are the defending champions, however, the last edition was played in the 50-over format.

The Asian Cricket Council has confirmed that the Asia Cup will be held in the United Arab Emirates with Sri Lanka, the original hosts, retaining hosting rights.

The economic crisis in Sri Lanka has seen the Asia Cup moved out of the country although Sri Lanka will continue to retain the hosting rights. The tournament will now be held in UAE between August 27 and September 11.

"Every effort was made to host the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka and the decision to shift the venue to the UAE was taken after much deliberation," Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President Jay Shah said in a press release on Wednesday. "The UAE will be the new venue while Sri Lanka will continue to retain hosting rights."

"This edition of the Asia Cup is extremely important as it will help Asian nations prepare for the ICC World Cup, and I thank the SLC and the Emirates Cricket Board for their understanding and cooperation."

The ACC also expressed its solidarity with Sri Lanka Cricket in the release.

On one hand you can use it to prepare for T20 world cup, but the conditons are very different from Australia. So they might tweak the squad a bit and select a team that can do well in UAE conditions.

My only concern is if Pakistan were to win the Asia Cup, they might just select the exact same squad for the t20 world cup, and that will not be good since we need a team that will be fit for Australian conditons

Will be silly to select anything other than the World Cup squad or anything close to it and give the few fringe players opportunities.
 
Read somewhere that Asia Cup has not been picked up by a y television broadcaster in US and UK. But will be streaming on HotStar. Anyone cna confirm?

Ideally they should select the world cup squad, but i have a funny feeling PCB will select 2 or 3 players are specifically good for UAE conditions

I would like to see Haider Ali comeback and be given a shot. Iftikhar too and its worth keeping in mind he performed quite well last time Pakistan played in Australia.

Rizwan/Babar/Fakhar/Iftikhar/Haider/Khushdil is an interesting batting lineup to me.

I would personally take Haider over Iftikhar personally, but both should get a fair shot, before the world cup starts.

Not only the member countries, but a tournament of this magnitude requires other stakeholders, like the broadcasters, sponsors, etc," SLC secretary Mohan de Silva said during a media briefing.

"What they felt was that the negative publicity shown all over the world, with the petrol queues and all that, didn't help our cause," he added.

Further talking about the Asia Cup, SEL CEO Ashley de Silva said: "Sponsors were finding it difficult to get insured, and the security clearance for broadcast crews to enter Sri Lanka was also an issue. The delegates who wanted to come from the other countries also weren't prepared to come."

Earlier, while announcing the move of shifting the Asia Cup from Sri Lanka to UAE, the Asian Cricket Council President Jay Shah said:

"Considering the prevailing situation in Sri Lanka, the ACC after extensive deliberation has unanimously concluded that it would be appropriate to relocate the tournament from Sri Lanka to the UAE," the ACC said in a statement. "Every effort was made to host the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka and the decision to shift the venue to the UAE was taken after much deliberation. The UAE will be the new venue while Sri Lanka will continue to retain hosting rights."

"We were really looking forward to hosting our Asian neighbours in Sri Lanka for the much-anticipated Asia Cup. While I fully stand by the ACC's decision to shift the Asia Cup to UAE considering the current context and the magnitude of the event, Sri Lanka Cricket will work closely with the ACC and Emirates Cricket Board to ensure that we still have an exciting edition of the Asia Cup," Sri Lanka Cricket chief Shammi Silva said.

The T20 tournament will be played from August 27 to September 11.
 
The Asia Cricket Council (ACC) might cancel Sri Lanka’s Asia Cup 2022 Hosting Rights due to Baseless “Politically Motivated” Claims made by Island’s clueless politicians in last few days, Cricket Age exclusively learns.

The Asia Cup, scheduled to begin on August 27, was moved from Sri Lanka to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), ACC announced last week. The ACC said that Sri Lanka Cricket will retain hosting rights for the tournament.

However, following ACC’s announcement, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Nalin Bandara Jayamaha in parliament alleged that there was financial fraud behind the shift of the Asia Cup from Sri Lanka to the UAE.

“Officials of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) had shifted the venue of the Asia Cup by hoodwinking cricket officials of India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan,” he alleged.

“They claim countries such as India and Pakistan had refused to play in Sri Lanka. This is a blatant lie as no participating nation had refused to play in Sri Lanka,” he further suggested.

“SLC has claimed that it will get dollars 6 million as fees for hosting the tournament. However Sri Lanka could have earned a sum of dollars 50 million if the Asia cup was held in Sri Lanka,” he also alleged.

However, when Cricket Age Inquired, it learned that amid the ongoing political unrest in the Sri Lanka, majority of ACC members had raised questions over the security of International teams in the Island.

“At a time, when even country’s president and prime minister’s houses were burnt, what’s the insurance of International teams like India and Pakistan security. That was the main concerned of ACC members that prompted them to shift the venue of the Asia Cup” a source close to the development, told Cricket Age.

It has further learned that while SLC would have earned approximately 4 million USD by hosting Asia Cup In Sri Lanka, now the board could potentially earn 6.5 million dollars!

However, Bandara’s politically motivated untimely, baseless claims can deprive SLC from Asia Cup hosting rights this year.

“ACC is very much concerned about false claims like this. The decision to shift the venue of the Asia Cup was taken by the ACC members considering Sri Lanka’s political, financial instability, along with worsening law and order” an ACC source, close to the development, told Cricket Age.

Accordingly, following baseless claims by MP Bandara, ACC might considering giving Asia Cup 2022 hosting rights to Bangladesh or any other member country.

“Like any other Sport, Cricket also must not be Influenced by politics. However, In Sri Lanka, especially in last one and half month, clueles politicians like Bandara and his party’s president Sajith Premadasa are deliberately trying to destabilize country’s most cherished game. If this continues, Sri Lanka could be deprived of Asia Cup 2022 hosting rights and it will be a disaster” the source added further.

“As a party, SJB has done and dusted now and has lost it’s ground. So it seems that now party’s MP’s have shifted their focus in destroying the game of cricket in the country” a Sri Lanka Cricket Expert told Cricket Age.
