South Africa is eying number-one position in the ICC ODI Team Rankings after New Zealand defeated Australia by 2-0 in its three-match series which concluded in Hamilton on Sunday.

New Zealand’s series win means Australia has stayed as the top-ranked side in the world. However, it has dropped from 120 points to join South Africa on 118 points.

With South Africa leading Sri Lanka 3-0 in its five-match series, victories in the remaining two matches (in Cape Town on 7 February and in Centurion on 10 February) will help the Proteas to leapfrog Australia into number-one position. In this scenario, South Africa will finish one point ahead of Australia on 119 points.

The 2-0 series victory means New Zealand has risen to 113 points, one point clear of fourth-ranked India, which will be defending its ICC Champions Trophy title in the United Kingdom in June.

Don't highlight Pakistan in the ranking table man. Downright embarrassing

Quite concerning. I'm not sure how we can improve the teams we fielded in South Africa and New Zealand.

I still believe Australia are the best ODI team followed by England and South Africa.

for me these are the real ranking considering team actual potential and performance.

Honestly, which cricket fan bar the hardcores who frequent forums like this actually cares about the ICC rankings ?

This Aus-NZ series sums up how pointless bilateral series have become. No context, no meaning, no importance in the grand scheme of things.

Just hurriedly cobbled together to make some quick bucks despite the fact Australia and NZ have ALREADY played each other in two ODI series last year. Nobidy will remember this series in a month's time. The ODI league cannot come soon enough.

I don't bother about ranking much (unless I am in the mood of getting under some PAK skin😜), but SRL at 99 is not fair.

What I can see in every thread is that England are the most over rated team on earth in many many years, when it comes to LO cricket (was in Test as well, but job is half done - 1-5 so far in Asia, another 0-5 in AUS waiting for full cycle). They have artificiality taken the per score of match by 100 runs & that shines more who watch the game in cricinfo. Scores of 350 is a double edged knife - it indicates your bowling as well.

Since ENG cricket apparently was reborn after this Aussie guy took charge, what I can see is, this is ENG's ODI results -

3-1 PAK (A)
2-3 SAF (A) - after leading 2-0
3-2 NZ (H) - winning the decider after DWL made their target 180 from 280 & 7th/8th pair slogging away with the small target
2-3 AUS (H) - being robbed at the decider
3-0 SRL (H) - one tie & one wash out, otherwise it was 4-0
4-1 PAK (H)
2-1 BD (A)
1-2 IND (A) - that one was a dead rubber.

I didn't check CI, so there could be few errors, but this gives me a clear indication that this ENG side is a glorified minnow basher - apart from 13 ODI against Azhar Ali's PAK & SRL at home; they have been absolute flat - we goofed up to chase 38 in 48 balls with 6 wickets at hand, which saved them from another 2-0 & series not going to decider - that's probably their best achievement in these 2 years. SRL with all their nose dive, still will give Poms a good beating at home with their spinners.

Only time they faced a PAK LO side with Azhar not leading the charge, they lost that T20 almost by innings at home & got buried in the decider at Chennai - therefore I am not sure what is so exciting about their LO cricket. Slogging is not the only KPI in the game - I can go to net session & watch batsmen lofting it at every corner. They did make the WC final, but 5 years back an "old fashioned" ENG won the same Cup.

I wish Aussies play their first team against Poms next winter, just like they did against PAK this time - I'll count with calculator - how many LO games this dynamic Pom side wins there.

I share your sentiments about English team and it was quite irritating to hear Nasser Hussain go on and on about how this England team has a very strong batting in the series against india.

Finally they have put a decent odi team and sky sports hype machine is trying it's best to make you believe that they are one of the best odi sides. Cringeworthy really.

ICC LOI rankings are not taken seriously because jamodis are not taken seriously.

Only the ICC tournaments are relevant - even a CT win >>> #1 ranking in ODIs

ICC test rankings on the other hand are very relevant.

Agree with mmhs about England being overrated by their hype machine as always.

Indian ranking is a right representation of the state of our odi team with too many oldies, too many inconsistent players and one man army team

it's a recent tradition. probably australia experiment their odi team and south agrica and australia experiments through the t 20 series.
so i think your assessment is not right.

Aussies have always been the top OD side . They have won the WC title 5 times , it is no joke . Made finals seven times.

As if being at number 8 wasn't embarrassing enough, OP decided to highlight it in janitorial green so that it sticks out like a sore thumb.

Everything doesn't need to have a larger meaning or be a small plot in a big play.

It was a short, quick series which had a couple of exciting matches that brought pleasure to the thousands who watched it live or on TV. End of.
