Upbeat Australia aim to take series

Match Facts

Tuesday, January 26, Adelaide Oval
Start time 13:55 (03:25 GMT)

The Big Picture

Australia can wrap up the series with victory in Adelaide after going 2-0 up at the SCG, where they enjoyed their third-greatest winning margin over Pakistan in terms of runs with a 140-run triumph. The visitors will find it difficult to come back in the five-match series but the first step must be to win on Australia Day to ensure the final two games in Perth do not become dead rubbers. To achieve that, they will need a much stronger batting performance than they showed in Sydney, where they were skittled for 127 chasing 268.

Pakistan continue to be haunted by questions over the captaincy. Mohammad Yousuf remains nominally in charge but according to the PCB, won't be for much longer, and Younis Khan was having some say in bowling changes and field placements at the SCG. Captaincy turmoil is a familiar feature of Pakistan sides and it certainly isn't helping their on-field performances. As well as lifting their batting game, they must find a way to restrict Australia through the middle overs and if possible dismiss the hosts, who have lost only five and six wickets in each of the first two ODIs.

Form guide (most recent first)

Australia WWNWW
Pakistan LLLLW

Watch out for...

Umar Akmal has the type of game that should be suited to the 50-over format but he has not yet fired in this series. His past four ODI innings read 9, 12, 23 and 0, and he will be searching for a big effort to ease any pressure over his place in the middle order. Adelaide, where the bounce is true and the square boundaries are short, is as good a place as any to turn his form around.

After several years of being a bits-and-pieces player, Cameron White has finally found his role in Australia's one-day team as a reliable and powerful No. 5. Since the start of the tour of India in October, White has averaged 47.25 in one-day internationals and has passed fifty in five out of eight innings. He started this series with 105 and 55 and on a good batting surface at Adelaide Oval he could easily take the series out of Pakistan's hands with another brutal display.

Team news

Australia are unlikely to make any changes to their winning side unless forced to and the only doubt surrounds Peter Siddle, who reported back soreness following Sunday's win. The Queensland fast man Ryan Harris has been added to the squad as a shadow player and could add to his sole ODI appearance if Siddle cannot play. "Peter Siddle experienced some back soreness after last night's ODI in Sydney," Alex Kountouris, the team physio said. "He'll be assessed during the course of the day tomorrow when a decision on his availability for the match at Adelaide Oval will be made."

Australia (probable) 1 Shane Watson, 2 Shaun Marsh, 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Clarke, 5 Cameron White, 6 Michael Hussey, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Nathan Hauritz, 9 Clint McKay, 10 Peter Siddle/Ryan Harris, 11 Doug Bollinger.

Pakistan lost Mohammad Asif to a hand injury sustained while fielding in the first ODI at the Gabba and he was replaced in Sydney by Umar Gul. They will be hoping Asif has recovered in time for the third match, while the poor batting in Sydney will have Fawad Alam and Khalid Latif thinking about a possible call-up.

Pakistan (possible) 1 Salman Butt, 2 Kamran Akmal (wk), 3 Younis Khan, 4 Mohammad Yousuf (capt), 5 Umar Akmal, 6 Shoaib Malik, 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, 9 Umar Gul, 10 Mohammed Aamer, 11 Saeed Ajmal.

Pitch and conditions

Adelaide is renowned as a batsman's paradise but in the past seven ODIs at the venue the highest team total was 255. And in five of the past six there the team batting first has lost the match. It's the sort of ground where batting doesn't get any harder as the day wears on and the team that bats first won't be confident with anything less than 260. The weather should be fine with a high temperature of 33C.

Stats and trivia

•Australia have won 28 of the 39 ODIs they've played at Adelaide Oval; Pakistan have won three of 14 there, including the most recent game between the two sides, in 1996
•Younis Khan is set to play his 200th one-day international. He will be the 12th Pakistan player to reach the milestone and the third in their current squad, behind Shahid Afridi and Mohammad Yousuf
•Australia's attack is so inexperienced in ODIs that their two leading wicket-takers are Shane Watson (104) and Michael Clarke (52)
•This will be the 13th one-day international to be held in Adelaide on Australia Day. The venue has also hosted Test cricket on 17 Australia Days over the years.

Quotes

Obvioulsy they are not aware of the Aamir injury yet...

Will the batting lineup be changed ?? How will Latif and Fawad fit in ?? That i would like to know!

On a side point Afridi should get a warm reception from the Adelaide crowd after a successful stint with South Australia. Lets hope he ensures there's not much for the crowd to cheer about tomorrow ;-)

if i would have been the captain my line up should have been :-

1.Khalid Latif
2.Sarfraz Ahmed
3.Younus Khan
4.Mohammad Yousuf
5.Umar Akmal
6.Shahid Afridi
7.Fawad Alam
8.Rana Naved
9.Umar Gul
10.Rao Iftikhar or Mohammad Asif if fit :asif
11.Saeed Ajmal

my line up drop butt , kamran akmal and malik and bring in sarfraz , khalid and fawad alam.

I'll be fast asleep in an hour.

InshaALLAH try to wake up but I'm not too bothered if I don't.

Anyway good luck Pakistan.

as ugly and non- supportive as this sounds, if we have any hope for a World Cup Final appearance, i feel this is actually a must- lose match so that we can clean house and groom a better middle order and give Afridi ODI captaincy and fire samosa alam.

is there a worse feeling ? i can't bare turn the PDA on to see what horror awaits. sub-100 score today ?

We will lose the series today. Can't see our players making a comeback after that disastrous batting display in the last game. We will probably win 4th &/or 5th ODI when it will be a matter of pride and dead-rubbers.

Still want to support my team, so GO PAKISTAN!!

I know what your saying. Gone are the days when I used to wake up 03:30am to watch Pakistani test matches, never mind ODI's.

I'll try waking up but I won't be upset if I wake up for Fazr and then go uni.

I hope Rana gets the new ball today, he is a new ball bowler, i remember his abilities to swing the new ball both ways.

loss on the cards for sure - this team doesn't look like winning anything on this tour

So :asif and :rana will bowl with the new ball. Not a bad bowling pair. Though, Rana can be wayward at times.

What's the latest on Asif ?

Any new regarding him ?

With Aamer out due to injury, we badly need Asif in the side, if we are to keep the series alive.

anyone heard any news on the squad other than the aamer news? Usually theres a few express/geo news leaks, haven't heard anything so far though

I thought you were Afridi_Fan until I saw your name.

Afridi_Fan give me profile picture to add as he change her profile picture. We decide to change both end.

we neeed Rao Iftikhar :p come on yousuf give him chance he is better ODI bowler than gully.

he does not swing it both ways..swing implies that it moves in the air..he can only swing it out and perhaps cut it back in of the pitch by luck

You know something that we don't.

I hope Latif and Fawad play. YK and one other need to be dropped.

I think Aussies will wrap up series 3-0 tonighit. Pakistan have been poor overall to often on this tour so far.

Isn't that arrogant?

Not arrogant, after all, Yousuf has pretty much given up and has one foot on the plane back home, at least Ponting backs his team.

Why is that arrogant? We deserve it.

When our own captain states "We can't beat them"

What do you expect Ponting to say?

Rana is the most hardworking guy in the team who will give his 100% percent every time and is also away from the politics of the team. If guy like him spoil your day then sadly you are a corrupt fan!

Australia to thrash Pakistan on Australia Day... Mark these words...

I have no faith in this crappy Pakistani lineup

No question that he works hard. We are talking about his bowling skills and perfromance. he is in the team for his bowling and some batting, or lack of it. He does bowl well on dry tracks and dry days but he over does his vriation. He bowled 4 balls per over like he should but then he has to always bowl two charity balls every over.

1990 WC Semi final was played between Arg vs Italy, it was played in Italy in the ground where Maradonna was part of their league, Maradonna assumed as he was famous in that league he expected the Italian fans to support him than Italy but ultimately what he saw was National Interest was overtaken with league interest ................ but the result was different Maradonna defeated Italy and went to final and Italian Crowds was very cheerfull in supporting Germany in Finals who ultimately won and the whole world saw Maradonna crying and making his exit ................ :)

You know things are bad, when Soccer is being discussed in a cricket match thread.

Are you aware of an on/off button on your tele?

Switch off tele
Close your laptop
Shutdown your PC

Dont check score on your blackberry
Avoid sports news on radio.

Now you made your day!!!

They stopped torturing you with Pak v Aus? Did you have to pay extra for that?

Since the second test I have been following it on Cricinfo even though I could be watching it in HD on television!

And here's the toss .. MoYo wins it and decides to forfeit the match stating that this is Australia so Pakistan can't possibly expect to win.

G'night :p

Me and you very alike, after the sydney test match i was so gutted and angry i said to myself no way in the world am i gona watch the 3rd test in Hobart. Yet come the night of that test here in the uk suprise suprise i actually stayed up during the nights and watched every single ball even tho it was a dead match as the series was over. Call me sad or whatever but at the end of the day pakistan is in the blood! Win lose or draw i'm right behind the boys!
