Following are the Test series records for teams, when playing away outside of Asia.

1. South Africa

Series Played 17
Series Won 12
Series Lost 3
Series Drawn 2

Series W/L ratio = 4.0

2. Australia

Series Played 20

Series W/L ratio = 2.4

3. England

So, we can deduce the following from the above mentioned series records.

South Africa has been the most dominant team while playing away outside of Asia in the last 20 years.

2nd and 3rd spot goes to Australia and England respectively.

India who are at 4th spot, have been the best Asian travelling team outside Asia in the last 20 years.

Breakdown of South Africa's 12 away series wins outside of Asia is as follows.

3 series wins in Australia ( 2008/09, 2012 and 2016)

2 series wins in England ( 2008 and 2012)

2 series wins in New Zealand ( 2012 and 2017)

3 series wins in West Indies ( 2001, 2005 and 2010)

2 series wins in Zimbabwe ( 2001 and 2014)

So 12 series wins in total for SA, and only 3 series losses.

The breakdown of series losses is as follows.

2 series losses in Australia ( 2001/02 and 2005/06)

1 series loss in England ( 2017)

Thats a phenomenally good away record outside Asia for South Africa..

The breakdown for Australia's 5 series losses is as follows.

4 series losses in England ( 2005, 2009, 2013 and 2015)

1 series loss in South Africa (2018)

Thats a great away record for Australia outside of Asia.

Thats a good away record for England outside Asia, albeit they could have done better in the West Indies.

The breakdown for India's 14 series losses is as follows.

4 series losses in South Africa ( 2001, 2006/07, 2013 and 2017/18)

3 series losses in Australia ( 2007/08, 2011/12 and 2014/15)

3 series losses in England ( 2011, 2014 and 2018)

3 series losses in New Zealand ( 2002, 2014 and 2020)

So, Overall a decent away series record for India outside Asia.

2 series wins in New Zealand ( 2003 and 2011)

2 series wins in Zimbabwe ( 2002 and 2011)

1 series win in West Indies (2017)

1 series win in Ireland (2018)

The breakdown of Pakistan's 13 away series losses outside Asia is as follows.

4 series losses in Australia ( 2004/05, 2009/10, 2016/17 and 2019)

4 series losses in South Africa ( 2002/03, 2007, 2013 and 2019)

3 series losses in England ( 2006, 2010 and 2020)

2 series losses in New Zealand ( 2016 and 2020/21)

So, Overall an average away series record for Pakistan outside Asia.
 
Sri Lanka's 5 series wins are in England (2014), in South Africa (2019) and 3 series wins in Zimbabwe (2004. 2016 and 2020)
 
New Zealand's 5 series wins include 2 series wins in West Indies (2002 and 2014) and 3 series wins in Zimbabwe (2005, 2011 and 2016)
 
West Indie's all 3 series wins have come in Zimbabwe ( 2001, 2003 and 2017).

So West Indies easily have the worst away series record out of all teams outside of Asia in the last 20 years.
 
In my opinion, matches against West Indies and Zimbabwe shouldn't be counted in the stats.

West Indies have been borderline minnows since the millennium and have only started winning at home with some pace friendly pitches.

You cannot discount India's 4 series wins in the Caribbean ( 2006,2011,2016 and 2019). They have done quite well to win 4 consecutive series there.

Yes, but England haven't won a series in the Caribbean since 2004. New Zealand also lost in the Caribbean in 2012. And Sri Lanka are yet to win a Test series in the Caribbean. So, winning in the Caribbean still takes some effort, therefore it wouldn't be correct to remove the series played against West Indies in my opinion.

Lost to Curran and ABD last time in England and SA. After ABD’s retirement it should be easier for India to win a series in SA.

Have an outside chance to win in England.

Winning in NZ looks difficult for now. Their pitches are just too tough for Indians, or any sub continent team for that matter.

Winning in SENA is tough, but they can keep winning in West Indies to boost their overseas stats :inti

Pakistan have also won 2 series in NZL and 1 series in WI, but among SENA countries, its in Australia only where India have done way better than Pak.
 
Anyways... thanks for the thread OP.

But I think you should have added Bangladesh's records as well as they've won multiple series' outside Asia (once in West Indies and mayb twice in zimbabwe)..

No, Bangladesh only have won 1 series outside Asia and that was in West Indies in 2009. They haven't won any series in Zimbabwe.

That’s true. India has disappointed time and again, especially in England where they have the capability to do better.

India of 2000s drew with a peak SA side in their home and have won series in England and New Zealand and drew another series in England in early 2000s.

I'm not including the series wins in West Indies as they have been borderline minnows for some years now.

I know, like I said its only in Australia, India have done much better than Pak. Otherwise Pak has a better W/L ratio in England than India in the last 20 years. Pak also have a much better record than India in NZL in last 20 years.

So that leaves out South Africa, there India have done slightly better than Pak, Thats about it. Both teams have lost 4 series in South Africa in the last 20 years though.

Any analysis, which compares hard fought draws or loses, with series white washes, is bunk. As for England, Pakistan benefit from shorter 2 matches series, india would have won or drawn its last 2 series if they only had 2 test series

As far as I know, India lost the first two tests of their last series in England, so how would have they won if it was only a 2 match series? lol

FYI, Pak also drew a 4 match series 2-2 in England in 2016.

Pak have done much better in NZ than India despite India winning one series in the specified time period. Pak have historically done well in New Zealand.

The Indian team of the 2000s decade had better achievements in England than any Pak achieved (they won one and drew one series) in the last 20 years but the Indian team struggled very much in English conditions in the last decade despite winning the odd test here and there.

In South Africa, India played 13 tests, won three, drew 3 and lost 7. Pakistan played 11 tests and lost all but one test. When you combine this with the fact that India drew against the Saffers in 2010, India's record is much better.

In Australia, it's a no contest.

All that's fine and all but at the end of day, you are playing to win. Or maybe it's just me.
If I had to chose between a series win in England this year and three consecutive drawn series' there, I am definitely picking the former.

Drawing series' or games just doesn't have that effect.

I am surprised there is not a bigger gap between India and Pakistan. I thought we would have had far better performances, especially with 2 series wins in Australia. Maybe a case of stats not reflecting quality, I certainly believe India has far better away performances.

Following are the W/L ratios of Pak and India in all SENA countries in last 20 years.

In Australia

Pak's W/L ratio = 0.00

India's W/L ratio = 0.54

So no contest, India much ahead

In South Africa

Pak's W/L ratio = 0.10

India's W/L ratio = 0.42

So India better than Pak here again

In England

Pak's W/L ratio = 0.5

India's W/L ratio = 0.33

So Pak ahead of India in England

In New Zealand

Pak's W/L ratio = 0.75

India's W/L ratio = 0.20

So Pak much better than India in New Zealand.

In last 20 years in the SENA countries, India have done better than Pak in Aus and SA. And Pak have done better than India in Eng and NZL.

Yes very true...but I owuld just expect the gap t be far larger. I certainly think India has had the better team, barring maybe some of misbah's sides...sadly we will never get to see those India v pak matches take place :(

Last 20 years stats of Pakistan and India outside Asia in terms of matches.

Pakistan's W/L ratio = 0.47

So, very similar to their Series W/L ratios in the last 20 years outside of Asia.
