Pakistan batsman Babar Azam has risen 21 spots to grab a career-best sixth position in the MRF Tyres ICC T20I Player Rankings after his player of the series performance helped complete a 2-1 victory over the World XI in the Independence Cup series played at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

The 22-year-old started with a fine innings of 86 and followed it up with two other useful knocks of 45 and 48 to finish as the highest run scorer in the series with 179 runs, eight more than his compatriot Ahmed Shehzad, who has gained nine slots to reach joint-22nd position.

In the latest rankings update, which also takes into account performances in Saturday’s one-off T20I in Durham which the Windies won against England by 21 runs, Shoaib Malik was another Pakistan batsman to gain as his 94 runs in the Lahore series saw him gain four slots to reach 30th position. Pakistan leg-spinner Shadab Khan has gained 32 places to reach 66th rank among bowlers.

As for the World XI, Sri Lanka all-rounder Thisara Perera has gained 16 slots to reach 53rd place among batsmen and has also moved up 13 slots to take 79th position among bowlers, while South Africa batsman Hashim Amla has moved up three places to 12th position.

Windies batsman Evin Lewis’s knock of 51 has helped him gain one spot to reach a career-best third position while his opening partner Chris Gayle’s score of 40 has helped him gain four slots to reach joint-22nd position. Among its bowlers, Carlos Brathwaite (up 17 places to 33rd) and Kesrick Williams (up 12th place to 61st) are the major gainers after taking three wickets each in Durham.

Similarly, England pace bowler Liam Plunkett (up 15 places to 23rd) and leg-spinner Adil Rashid (up 11 places to 28th) have ensured upward movement after their three-wicket hauls.

Meanwhile, the Windies side has overtaken England in the MRF Tyres ICC T20I Team Rankings. The Windies side was in fourth position with 117 points before the match but is now third with 120 points. On the other hand, England has lost four points to slip from second to fourth position with 119 points.

Gotta admire this talent, Babar Azam. He's in the top 5 in both formats, in less than 2 years. Best batsman from Pakistan, of this decade.

I don't know if it's just me but I think it's a matter of time before Imad gets exposed. I actually don't see him as a threatening bowler

people have been saying this for 2 years now

he is a very good limited overs cricketer

Meh.....Couldn't care less about Micky Mouse Format Rankings tbh..... The only positive from these T20s are that it's Alhamdullilah paving the way back for Cricket to eventually return to Pakistan ~ Inshallah !!

Nothing wrong with T20 cricket, but T20I rankings are completely useless imo.

They are useless in the sense that they have no actual bearing on the result of the match. In ODIs you would expect the number one ranked side to generally get the better of the number eighth ranked side, however, in T20s any of the two can win.

That being said, T20 rankings are just a confirmation that you have been doing well and playing good cricket. It is heartening to see that under Saifi we have progressed from number eight in the T20 rankings to number two over the course of a year.

Well done to Bobby. He has all the semblance of a future ATG and the best ever batsman from Pakistan. However, he needs to be hungry like Kohli. Once Kohli is set it is very very hard to get him out. Babar needs to develop that tenacity in his game.

Yes, for Babar nothing wrong with watching and learning from Kohli and other modern day greats . Babar has to improve his strength also, need to work in gym, looks too weak to play big shots .

He's already gotten exposed in some overseas countries, just a matter of time before batters start playing him like the medium pacer he is.

Lol, he had a brilliant tour of England and had couple of good matches in Australia where spinners are totally useless.

I don't get this exposed rubbish with imad. So if a spinner doesn't turn the ball on most of his deliveries and he gets hit for runs then hes "exposed" but if an orthodox spinner gets hit for runs its just a "bad day". Honestly ppl need to learn to appreciate imad. In terms of exposed I think what u mean is teams know he doesn't turn the ball which I think most teams knew after the first few matches he played yet he was still successful in tors of England and Australia. He deserves his number 1 t20 ranking because he is accurate and very economical. If he doesn't take wickets he will be going at under 7 runs per over which is very good in t20i

Also, Afridi barely ever spun the ball yet he was never considered exposed even though every cricketer in the world knew he doesn't spin too many. In fact many spinners in t20 don't turn too many these days. If any1 watched the t20 yesterday b/w England and windies u will have seen that narine didn't turn many yet bowled superbly.

Imad isn't a great bowler by any stretch, but in T20 you don't need to be great

if you're smart and have good control, keep things tight, eventually the batsmen will give you wickets. Thats why Imad is on top (and why Hafeez was so good for so many years)

People say he ain't cut out for T20 but is already our best T20 batsman ever :))

if you score at an average of over 50 at a SR of over 120 there will be use for you. Sure a 35 average batsman with a SR of over 140 might be more ideal, but we don't have anyone like that or have had. So Babar's good.

Babar is hard to get out too.

What he needs to develop is more air and power into his shots.

He also needs to master the art of chasing and finishing games to become truly elite. Almost all his best innings have come whilst batting first barring his hundred vs. Australia.
