I had not heard about this much until now. A 500,000 people gated community in Karachi with dancing fountains, world's 3rd largest mosque, Pakistan's biggest cricket stadium, etc. See the video below:

https://youtu.be/ppxvrxrrRyw

I'm not a fan of gated communities as the result is segregation between rich/poor but this development is impressive nonetheless. The same Bahria group is currently constructing the tallest building in Pakistan in Karachi - Bahria Icon Tower at 290m.

Actually Karachi seems to be going through quite a high rise construction boom with 5 buildings under construction over 200m+ and several more 100m+.

Some positive news amid all the doom and gloom.

Bahria Town Karachi is not IN Karachi

The construction and architectural work is impressive

But dont expect established Karachi folks to be move there

Good investment opportunity though

Exactly... me own paps has got three plots in BT back when the plan was first announced and plots were dirt cheap. It is expected the price of those plots will increase several folds over the coming years. Most people that own plots in BT do so for investment purpose at the moment. BT is just too FAR from the city for anybody to viably live there and commute back and forth.

If the Blue line BRT and Malir Expressway materialize then BT will be easily connected to the city.

As for Karachi high rise boom, most of it is concentrated in the Clifton area facing the Arabian Sea shoreline and is located quite a ways away from downtown core of the city. Most cities of the world have a skyline in the downtown area but Karachi is completely different lol..

Prices have increased a lot already if he bought it at start.

unlike dha where it would be fine i wouldnt put all my eggs in one basket (basket being bahria) though. Malik Riaz gaya and bahria itself will be in doldrums so not bad idea to think of diversifying a bit

That's true.. what do you think about the DHA city that is being built right opposite BT (or close to it). I've seen pictures and the infrastructure didn't seem as impressive as BT.

Malik Riaz might be corrupt but his BT is definitely first world standard (or in some cases even better)

DHA City is not even 10% as built as Bahria. Bahria is almost ready

but many people say that since dha is army it is definitely going to increase in value and is not dependant on just one guy.

So in long term its safer

Just out of interest.... how do they acquire this land? I assume its government land and not private, is there a public consultation process? For example how will they get all the water for these massive developments... and how does it then affect Karachi needs etc...

Malik Riaz has strong ties to federal government, ex-SC and some people say Army. A lot of the lands was just 'occupied' and/or bought at fixed rates with no room for negotiation as documentation for this land outside city was nonexistent. A Rangers report in 2015 said that 44,000 acres was allocated by provincial govt to Bahria, but Malik Riaz denied it. Also as I mentioned a lot of the land was grabbed from pvt citizens with land on Super Highway by paying them a price without negotiation. (Dawn covered this recently)

these days there is a huge clean water shortage in karachi as lot of the clean water which used to come in lines is being diverted to bahria town.

Not sure how othe bahria towns coexisted with rest of city. But afaik the ones in isb and lahore are 'part' of city rather than way outside it

Since it's gated and well designed/serviced, if it can be kept safe from the violence of Karachi, I can see established Karachiites moving out there.

Other cities normally put height restrictions in all areas except downtown to encourage high rises in those areas. Not sure if Karachi has a similar mechanism. Plus downtown Karachi is not really downtown anyways (few to no highrises) so maybe the new area can become a real downtown and offices will move there.

scandalous..... the have nots are being deprived in their millions so the few can have all the amenities.

Why is there is no hue and cry, Karachites should be laying seige to these developments.

Guys, similar things were said when Bahria Town first came about in Rwp/Isb. It was located in a far off village called Rawat and people didn't even bother buying plots with an incentive for investment, however now, Bahria Town is considered to be one of the best areas to live in, especially with all the amenities provided.

Now, an even further off phase of BT has become populated with plot prices reaching the sky.

It's an open secret that BT Karachi has Army involvement. There is no way such a large project could be given the green light without our Army also wetting their beak.

I know several established Karachiwallas that have bought plots with the intention of moving there once the complex is established. The lack of water in Defence, the power shortages, the house robberies... all issues that BT has promised wont happen there. This promised has seduced many.

As for the ethical argument, much of the land grab was done to existing communities. However, BT, in their defence, have stated that the majority was Government land with unauthorised inhabitants that were paid to move.

Bahria town Karachi prices have not gone up the way people anticipated. That is due to it being located in the middle of Hyderabad and Karachi and all the controversy. If i remember correctly a few years ago didn't the courts impose a stay order on construction due to the local population protesting?

The stay order was overturned a year ago.

The prices have gone up, but BT keeps launching new plots and schemes (BT Paradise, BT Paradise, BT Sports City), meaning there is an over-supply in the market. This obviously drives prices down. The earlier schemes, which will be ready for possession in the next quarter, have seen BIG increases.

Not true

Maybe middle class families may move there

Not really limited to the one in KHI. It's the same story with the one in Islamabad. A lot of the land used for DHA Phase 2 and Bahria is illegally occupied and no saaja maaja qabza group (of which there are hundreds in the twin cities) has the wherewithal to occupy such large tracts of land (we're talking many square miles here, not yards or meters). The issue was raised briefly by some media outlets but died down pretty quickly.

I've been there a couple of times. It's well built and the roads are good, but some people won't move there as it's too far from the city. The plots over there are still cheap though and restaurants like Pizza Hut and Burger King are already there.

Nothing wrong with people wanting a safer and better environment for their family and children especially. When you get older you will realize how important it is. The rest who complains about gated community are those that are jealous.

What I would like to see is investment in social housing and taking people off the streets.
Give them hope of a better future.

Is it a good investment?? Most people see "I bought it for 1000$ and I sold it for 10 000$ three years later great investment" but they forget all the fees BT has got in between... If you had put the same 1000$ in a good mix of KSE stocks your money would have grown much more and without the headache of all the fees and controversies...

Also Malik Riaz is a corrupt guy... Everyone criticizes corruption but when it comes to "investing money" they don't care anymore.... Because now they benefit from the corruption with cheap plots...

Hope Lahore doesn't ruin its skyline with ugly high rises... It's fine for Karachi as it doesn't have historical buildings..., Look at London it has become such an ugly city

I'm probably on the older side on this forum (2 kids) :)
Gated communities are not common in Canada so it's a bit of a foreign concept to me. I've seen it in other parts of the world and it would be interesting to see what kind of social effect it has on communities.

I too live in Canada as a student. There is a big difference between people of educated and uneducated. Lot of times wealthy areas are not far from poverty and crime ridden areas. These poverty ridden area for most part rely on wealthy neighboring areas for employment, mostly as maids, drivers, gardeners, cooks, dish washers, watchmen and etc. Nobody wants their kids kidnapped, cars, motorcycles stolen or even their daughters stolen by a road side romantic romeo from the neighboring slum.

A three member bench of the Supreme Court (SC) headed by Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan has ruled that Bahria Town Karachi cannot sell plots in Karachi.

The Supreme Court labelled the allotment of land to Bahria Town illegal, and has prevented the developer from selling commercial or residential land in Karachi.

The court has also ordered an investigation into the illegal allotment of Malir Development Authority’s land.

The court has also ordered that an investigation be launched within the next three months against the people involved in the illegal transactions.

The verdict also states that a special bench be formed to supervise the investigation.

The judges also added that transactions between the Sindh government and Bahria town could be made legal, but the stipulations on these transactions will be established by the SC’s special bench.

Supreme Court finds massive illegalities in land acquired by Bahria Town for housing projects

https://www.dawn.com/news/1405576/s...-acquired-by-bahria-town-for-housing-projects

Bahria Town Karachi forbidden from selling or allotting new properties; NAB told to proceed against those involved.

In three separate yet equally searing verdicts delivered on Friday, the Supreme Court (SC) came down hard on Bahria Town's illegal procurement of land for its housing projects across the country, in each case declaring all such transfers null and void.

Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan authored the hard-hitting majority judgements in each case, which were heard by a single three-member bench. He was accompanied by Justices Maqbool Baqar and Faisal Arab.

Each order was passed 2-1, with Justice Maqbool Baqar dissenting in each case.

The apex court barred Bahria Town from selling or allotting land in the Bahria Town Karachi project after declaring that the allotment of land to the company by the Sindh government and a massive land swap with the Malir Development Authority (MDA) was done illegally.

"[...] We are constrained to declare that the grant of the land to the MDA, its exchange with the land of Bahria Town and anything done pursuant thereto being against the provisions of COGLA 1912 [Colonization of Government Lands Act, 1912] and statement of conditions are void ab initio and as such have no existence," the court ruled.

"The government land would go back to the government and the land of Bahria Town exchanged for the government land would go back to Bahria Town," the court ordered.

The bench hearing the case further directed the National Accountability Bureau to file references against those responsible for illegally transferring and allotting land and to take action against them within three months.

The court also considered the interests of those people Bahria Town has already sold the land to.

"Since a great deal of work has been done by the Bahria Town and a third-party interest has been created in favour of hundreds of allotees, the land could be granted to the Bahria Town afresh by the Board of Revenue under the provisions of COGLA 1912."

"What would be the terms and conditions of grant, what would be the price of the land, whether it would be the one at which the Bahria Town sold the land to the people by and large, how much of government land and how much of the private land has been utilized by the Bahria Town, and what Bahria Town is entitled to receive in terms of money on account of development of the land are the questions to be determined by the implementation bench of this court."

"We, therefore, request the Honorable Chief Justice of Pakistan to constitute a bench for the implementation of this judgement in its letter and spirit," it asked.

"Bahria Town shall not sell any plot, built-up unit, apartment etc after the announcement of this judgement. Any allotment made after the announcement of this judgement shall be void," the court ordered.

"The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) shall pick up the thread from where it left and take its investigation to its logical end. The investigation report which was submitted in the Court and sealed under its order may now be collected for further action. The investigation be completed within a period of three months from the date of announcement of this judgement and a reference be filed in the Accountability Court against all those who are found responsible for causing loss to the state exchequer," the court further ruled.

"We have been told that government land has also been allotted to DHA and many other societies on cheaper rates as compared to the rates in this case. If so, we would request the Honourable Chief Justice of Pakistan to take suo moto action in this behalf so that like be treated alike."

Separately, the SC also held Bahria Town responsible for encroachment on forest land in the Takht Pari area near Islamabad.

The issue raised in the Takht Pari case was that Bahria Town had 'encroached' upon 1,170 kanals of forest land, while the forest department had 'encroached' on an area measuring 765 kanals of Bahria Town.

However, the court struck down this mutual 'encroachment' deal, deeming it illegal and of no effect.

"We declare that the area of Takht Pari is 2,210 acres; that exchange of land purportedly encroached by Bahria Town and the forest department and attestation of mutations in this behalf being based on an erroneous assumption about the area is against the law and the record and as such of no effect and the order passed in S.M.C.No. 3 of 2009 is recalled."

"However, if any third-party interest has been created over the forest land what to do therewith and how to deal therewith shall be decided by the implementation bench," it ruled.

The court then directed the forest department, the revenue department and the Survey of Pakistan to conduct a fresh demarcation in the Takht Pari area.

It also issued notices to the forest department and Bahria Town to submit a report within one month before the SC implementation bench.

NAB was also directed to look into who authorised the illegal allotments in the Takht Pari area and pursue them in an accountability court.

In a third order issued the same day, the Supreme Court also struck a death blow to the New Murree Development Project/Scheme, which had been roundly criticised by environment protection agencies for endangering the forests and land around Islamabad.

"We do not understand how suitable chunks of land were chosen and taken possession of without having recourse to legal proceedings and without the permission of the government in gross, grave and glaring violation of the law governing the partition of such land.

"We do not understand how the trees and bushes running in millions were cut from the shamlat-i-deh [communal land] and how was it converted into a building site. We also do not understand how the government slept over its rights and sat around like an idle spectator when everything was ruined and run amuck by Bahria Town or for that matter any other builder without realizing that fauna and flora are better served by the natural growth of trees than the mountains of iron, cement and concrete," Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan wrote.

"[...] As a sequel to what has been discussed above, we have no hesitation to hold that any area of shamilat-i-deh broken up for cultivation or any other purpose, partitioned, taken possession of or constructed in violation of the wajib-ul-arz [agreement between settled villagers using the land and the government] and rule 4A and 4B of the Rules mentioned-above, being illegal and unlawful is of no effect."

"The area thus broken up, partitioned, taken possession of or constructed be retrieved by the government forthwith. All construction work in shamilat-i-deh be stopped forthwith. The construction work carried in private ownership would continue only if it is okayed by the Rawalpindi Development Authority and Environment Protection Agency."

"The persons and officials of the revenue department be proceeded against. The NAB is directed to investigate the case and file references against all those who are found responsible for committing, aiding and abetting the crime at any level or in any form."

"If at all a great deal of construction work has been done on the property comprised in shamilat-i-deh, plots have been transferred, superstructure has been raised thereon and third-party interest has been created therein, a spade would remain a spade and an illegal act would remain illegal. However, the questions what to do with the allottees, how to deal with their cases and what remedial measures could be taken in this behalf shall be dealt with by the implementation bench.

"We, therefore, request the Honourable Chief Justice of Pakistan to constitute an implementation bench in this behalf to deal with the questions mentioned above.

"It is, however, added that the provincial government and the Forest Department take care of the areas of the shamilat-i-deh to develop it by afforestation."

ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Wednesday initiated investigations against administrations of Defence Housing Authority (DHA) Islamabad, Bahria Town and Capital Development Authority (CDA) for over Rs62 billion DHA Valley and its Phase-II (extension) scams.

The anti-graft watchdog also decided to start probe against the son-in-law of ex-prime minister Nawaz Sharif retired Capt Safdar and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa president Ameer Muqam for having assets beyond their known sources of income.

The NAB closed down a case of Khushhal Pakistan Programme funds against Nawaz Sharif who has already been facing four other cases.

110,000 civilians, and 41,000 serving and retired military officers and families of martyrs suffered losses

These decisions were made in the executive board meeting that was chaired by the bureau’s chairman, retired Justice Javed Iqbal.

An official press release regarding the meeting said: “The administrations of the three organisations were accused of being involved in non-development of DHA Valley and DHA Phase-II extension causing irreparable losses to hundreds of thousands of people who had invested their hard earned money in these projects.”

In October 2016, former army chief Gen Raheel Sharif had given a go-ahead to NAB to take stern action against retired military officers and civilians involved in the DHA Valley scam. However, the then NAB administration did not take significant action.

A top NAB official, on condition of anonymity, told Dawn that a senior official of the army had called on NAB’s former chairman Qamar Zaman Chaudhry in July 2015 and had assured full support to the bureau in investigating the matter.

It is NAB’s second action against Bahria Town’s chief Malik Riaz in a month as the anti-corruption watchdog had already started inquiry against him.

The DHA Valley scheme, meant for the bereaved families of martyred military personnel, was proposed on the site of a small dam called the Dadhocha dam on Punjab government’s land.

The DHA Valley case was started on the complaint of a resident of Rawalpindi, retired Lt Col Mohammad Tariq Kamal, in Sept 2010, who alleged that the real estate project DHA Valley was being developed on the area reserved for the lake adjoining the proposed Dadhocha dam. Following the verification of the complaint on June 13, 2011, the bureau had authorised an inquiry on July 3, 2012.

Names of former army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani’s brothers and some other retired officials of the army are also part of the scam as their firm was hired to provide land for DHA Valley scheme.

The petition said the DHA, Bahria Town and a real estate/construction firm Habib Rafique had entered into a contract to develop various housing schemes, including DHA Valley, DHA Phase II extension, DHA Express Way and DHA Villas in Rawalpindi, as a joint venture.

According to the petitioner’s evaluation, the DHA Valley was valued at Rs110 billion, DHA Phase II Extension at Rs70 billion, the Express Way at Rs50 billion and DHA Villas was valued at Rs100 billion. DHA-I and DHA-II are said to be developed housing societies, but DHA Valley is yet to be developed.

The NAB inquiry said that the people who had paid money to get the plots in DHA Valley had found that they were fooled because they were deliberately not informed by the DHA management about the agreement between DHA-I and Bahria Town over land development. In 2009, the DHA had transferred all the funds raised from the public — Rs62bn — to the accounts of Bahria Town. But, Bahria Town failed to develop the scheme.

About 110,000 civilians, 41,000 serving and retired military officers and families of martyrs were cheated in the scam. The total land in question is of 165,000 kanals.

'Charity work cannot be done by bribing people,' chief justice schools Malik Riaz

Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar on Tuesday appeared unimpressed by Malik Riaz's charity work — which the property tycoon mentioned more than once during the hearing — pointing out that charity does not make up for occupying land illegally.

"Charity work cannot be done by bribing people," Justice Nisar pointedly said to Riaz, who swore that he had never bribed anyone.

Riaz appeared before the Supreme Court in a case pertaining to Bahria Town Karachi issuing notices to people who have already been allotted plots, commercial buildings or build-up units to make payments to a bank account set up by the housing society.

He told the court that he had built Bahria Town Karachi so that "Pakistan can grow from a third world country to a first world country".

"We planned construction projects in the areas where people did not go [due to poor security]," he said, directing the court's attention towards the fact that the housing society project also included the "world's third largest mosque", as well as an old-age home, a zoo, schools, and other facilities.

Justice Nisar, however, told Riaz that the court could not "allow [Riaz] to continue with illegal ventures because of his religious projects".

"You cannot Illegal occupy land and then do charity," he added.

'Violation of court order'
Earlier today, the chief justice had barred the housing society from collecting outstanding payments, saying that the administration of Bahria Town Karachi had violated court orders by opening up a separate bank account to collect outstanding payments.

Last month, the apex court had ordered the additional registrar of the Supreme Court's Karachi registry to open a special account facilitating the deposit of the outstanding amount against allotments through pay orders, demand drafts or cross-cheques.

As a huge amount of money on account of allotment of plots, build-up units and commercial buildings was still outstanding against the allottees, some makeshift arrangement should be made to facilitate the recovery and secure it, the judgement had stated. Bahria Town Karachi was also barred from selling or allotting land by the top court after declaring that the land for the project was acquired illegally.

However, Riaz's counsel Aitzaz Ahsan on Tuesday denied that the housing society had issued notices to anyone.

Riaz, who appeared in court after being summoned by the CJP, vowed that he would obey court orders, urging Justice Nisar not to pass a verdict that would "affect employees".

The top judge then ordered Riaz to submit Rs20 billion in court, saying that the money had to be "returned to the nation".

Read more: Bahria Town — Greed unlimited

The property tycoon requested the court to reduce the amount to Rs5 billion. When Justice Nisar told him to mortgage his property, Riaz claimed that he had none and the house he lived in belonged to his wife.

The CJP then reduced the amount to Rs10 billion. However, Riaz insisted that the court reduce the amount to Rs5 billion.

Justice Nisar ordered Riaz to submit Rs5 billion in the next hearing, along with his property documents and an undertaking that he will not sell any of his assets before the court issues a verdict.

The top judge also directed him not to initiate any new Bahria Town project. The hearing of the case was adjourned until June 27.

Construction of multi-storeyed buildings
Riaz also urged the court to order the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to halt its investigation until the top court passes a verdict. He said that due to the case in NAB, property prices had gone down due to which several people, who had invested in the project, were suffering.

The chief justice had expressed anger at Bahria Town Karachi's project of a multi-storey building in Clifton, saying that the apex court had ruled against it.

Acting on SC's orders, last year the Sindh Building Control Authority had declared it illegal to build multi-storey and high-rise buildings "beyond ground plus two floors forthwith in Karachi".

However, Riaz's counsel Aitzaz Ahsan argued that the ban on high-rise buildings had been imposed after the construction was completed.

The argument was dismissed by the chief justice, who said that the construction was still underway and NAB was already pursuing a case regarding the violation. He told Ahsan to advise his client to appear before NAB.

Visited BT today.Little siblings wanted to go to the new zoo over there. The zoo is better than the other zoo in Karachi and well built but not much else i can say about it.

Bahria Town itself seemed more populous than the last time I was there.A lot of things are still still under construction there but the work carried out there is better than any other place in Karachi.

Bahria Town announces pay cuts for employees amid coronavirus

Bahria Town has paid its employees a reduced amount of their salaries for the month of April citing the prevailing coronavirus situation.

According to a circular, a copy of which is available with Dawn.com, those who are paid Rs50,000 or less did not have any deduction, those who are paid up to Rs100,000 had 20 per cent deducted while those paid up to Rs300,000 and above Rs300,000 had 40pc and 50pc of their salaries deducted respectively.

The deduction was applicable to all employees except those working in hospitals, the circular stated.

Man injured as Bahria Town Karachi guards allegedly open fire on villagers resisting eviction

A resident of Karachi's Gadap Town was shot at and wounded on Friday in firing allegedly carried out by private guards and policemen in civvies during Bahria Town Karachi’s (BTK) move to bulldoze several agricultural lands to pave the way for housing projects in the outskirts of the city.

While police were reluctant to share information, an activist of Sindh Indigenous Rights Alliance and resident of Kathor area, Abdul Hafeez, said the BTK guards along with police tried to destroy the crops in Kamal Khan Jokhio Goth on Friday morning but the locals put up resistance and forced them to abandon the attempt.

However, the armed private guards accompanied by police both in uniform and civilian clothes returned to the scene again after Friday prayers and started destroying the crops with bulldozers, according to Hafeez.

Around 100 residents put up resistance, and as soon as a local threw a stone towards the BTK personnel, the guards opened "straight fire" at the villagers. At least one villager, Shaukat Khaskheli, sustained a bullet injury, while another suffered minor injuries.

The guards allegedly took away the injured villager and 3-4 other locals with them, Hafeez said.

Dawn.com has made attempts to get a comment from Bahria Town Karachi and members of the PPP-led government.

Villagers were protesting against the BTK personnel and demanding that the injured person be handed over to them and a First Information Report be lodged against the BTK guards.

Hafeez later told Dawn.com that instead of taking Khaskheli to a hospital, BTK personnel took him in an injured state to the local police station to get an FIR registered against him. Locals then reached the police station, got hold of Khaskheli and shifted him to hospital.

The activist said around 50-60 acres of agricultural land was being demolished to pave the way for BTK’s new housing projects near Kathor.

In a tweet, Hafeez said the BTK officials had told the owner of the land that the land had been awarded to the real estate giant by the Supreme Court and therefore the demolition work would continue. However, they were unable to produce any documents when asked to support their claim by the owner, the activist added.

The development comes a week after PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, whose party rules Sindh, said he had taken notice of reports of villagers being evicted by employees of BTK and law enforcers in Karachi and demanded a report on the matter.

The PPP chairman had said the Supreme Court's decision was in front of everyone and neither he nor anyone else wanted to commit "contempt of court".

Hafeez said BTK officials had stopped their eviction efforts after Bilawal took notice of them, but they had resumed the same today after a gap of a week.

While responding to activist Ammar Ali Jan, who tweeted that the Sindh Police was "facilitating destruction of villages for Bahria town" despite the Sindh government giving the assurance that demolitions by BTK would stop, PPP Senator Quratulain Marri said: "I apologise. A fight has indeed erupted."

Other social media users and activists also expressed concern over today's incidents, while #SayNoToBahriaTown was trending at the top in Pakistan.

Activist Usama Khilji said on Twitter that "the poor of Karachi need state protection against land mafias."

Grand Democratic Alliance leader Ayaz Latif Palijo alleged that the BTK administration "has opened fire on the local people of Kathor and Gadap, who are resisting the land grabbing of [BTK]."

"Sindh government is in league with Malik Riaz, media has been bribed," he alleged.

Journalist Sameer Mandhro termed BTK's alleged actions reflective of a "state within state".

Rights activist Afrasiab Khattak tweeted that "it seems the land grabbers have made comprehensive arrangements, winning over law enforcers, courts and administration for conquering the huts of the poor in Karachi. But people are watching. There will be accountability in the people’s court."

Awful pictures coming out of Karachi. Indigenous people being beaten and shot by Malik Riaz’s goons. Absolute zero coverage by the media. All political parties including PTI are in Riaz’s pocket.

IK proved to be MR's new recruit when buzdar was taking orders from MR on ring road and IK defended Buzdar.

All political parties, media houses and the military are on the same page when it comes to MR. This person is the one who unites everybody; the rightists and the leftists.

Biggest criminal this malik riaz, from obscurity this guy has amassed serious wealth and land .

he was a gov. clerk, who had a cassanova approach to negotiations and used it to take over bahria town, a housing estate for the navy retirees,

luck was on his side as 9/11 sent real estate market in pakistan booming, which meant he could sell plots and houses before making them or even buying the land.

I remember these times in pakistan, people were going crazy for plots, housing societies sold out in minutes of launching, MR went crazy launching projrect after project, selling them all without even having an inch of land.

In those days, all you had to do was draw a map and make some artistic renderings with european monuments and spainish villas, and they sold like hot cakes.

MR cashed in big time. This will go down in history as one of the biggest scams to ever have been commited.

So many projects from 20 years, all sold out and never were built.

KARACHI: Four persons, including three policemen, were wounded when a mob attacked the Shah Latif Town police station following the arrest of a man allegedly involved in the recent Bahria Town Karachi (BTK) violence on Wednesday, police said.

Area SHO Nek Mohammed Khoso said that a police party conducted a raid in Arbani Goth on the outskirts of the city off National Highway and took into custody a suspect for his alleged involvement in the BTK incident.

Subsequently, he said, around 100-150 people attacked the Shah Latif Town police station, where an exchange of gunfire between the attackers and police took place.

He said a protester, identified as Abdul Rasool, suffered a bullet wound and was arrested in an injured condition along with his four accomplices, identified as Mudassir, Abdul Nabi, Lal Mohammed and Ghulam Rabbani.

The SHO said that the protester was hurt by the firing of his own accomplices and not the police.

CTD formally associates senior PSP leader Anis Advocate in RAW inquiry

He claimed that three policemen — Waseem, Ubaid and Ramzan — suffered injuries caused by sticks and stones. The situation came under control after a contingent of police arrived there.

He said that the people who attacked the police station allegedly belonged to a banned nationalist group.

All the wounded persons were shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for treatment.

‘Gangster’ held in Lyari

The Baghdadi police on Wednesday carried out a raid in Phool Patti Lane near Dubai Chowk and arrested a man, said to be associated with one of the several gangs operating in Lyari.

City SSP Sarfaraz Nawaz Shaikh said Mohammed Adeel alias Gudal was the “target killer commander” of the gang led by Zahid Ladla. A hand grenade was recovered from him.

During initial questioning, he revealed that Ladla had tasked him for the assassination of a police officer and three informers. He had carried out reconnaissance and was ready to do the job within the next few days.

He also told the police that he was involved in some grenade attacks targeting the traders who refused to pay protection money.

“He is a habitual criminal and cases are already registered at different police stations,” said the SSP.

CTD seizes PSP leader’s mobile phone, passport

The Counter-Terrorism Department on Wednesday officially associated Pak Sarzameen Party leader Anis Advocate with the investigation into RAW-related activities.

“The CTD summoned Anis Advocate again today [Wednesday] for further questioning regarding his role in MQM’s India-related activities,” said DIG Omar Shahid Hamid. “He was questioned regarding recruitment of MQM activists for training in India on behalf of RAW. His answers were unsatisfactory and he has formally been made part of the investigation,” he added.

He said that the PSP leader’s passport and mobile phone were being seized for a forensic analysis and procedure had been initiated for blocking his computerised national identity card (CNIC).

“He has also been informed that if he leaves the city he may be treated as an absconder,” the DIG said.

Earlier, the CTD had arrested two MQM workers, who told investigators that they were allegedly trained by Indian intelligence agency RAW and their links with it were established by their leaders Dr Farooq Sattar and Anis Advocate.

The CTD had summoned both the leaders on June 4 and they denied any links with the held suspects. However, the investigators had again called Anis Advocate as they were not satisfied with his replies at that time.

BTK seems like a residence for the elite, with its own power generating station, golf course etc.

It is good that development is taking place but bad that the people whose land has been taken were not compensated enough.

Bahria was offering peanuts to the indigenous people for their land.

Incredible how bahria buys one kanal area land for rs 20,000. The least they can do is give a decent offer for their land.

no limit to Bahria's greed

Now they are paying teenagers 500 Rs to tweet supportive messages on twitter for BTK :)))

If you take the land away from the poor, they have almost nothing left. They are forced to move slums and do work for a pittance to be able to barely feed their families. It is a tragedy, but in feudal societies the lot of the poor is miserable.

Now they are blaming RAW for it! "The Counter-Terrorism Department on Wednesday officially associated Pak Sarzameen Party leader Anis Advocate with the investigation into RAW-related activities."

Some people are saying Malik Riaz has influenced (fancy for bought) Imran Khan so government is asking court to give relief to Malik Riaz

Will Imran Khan remember what was his motto before coming to power? He should be the 1st person against Malik Riaz instead of helping him

These housing schemes and plots have military hand behind them because all these elites profiteer of this racket of real estate.

This massive urban sprawl which is being created in cities, taking precious water resources , ruining valuable arable land and green spaces will be a massive environmental disaster for the future , in UK we have green belts where you can't build .

Farmland is valuable since its what feeds the nation and is basically the essence roots of majority of our ancestors farmers and pastoralists , unless these elite goons are planning some Ethiopian type famine down the road who knows .
Poor man's life , land and his labour is cheap worthless in pakistan

Bahria Town Karachi is for middle class. I would not rank it in the Top 10 areas of Karachi personally.

The biggest drawback of BTK is that its too far from main karachi, most people just dont want to live that far away, especially if they have money.

Thats nonsense, this is for upperclass not middle.

People think its middle class because the houses are the same size as middle class homes in the west, without realising, Those middle class homes in the west are bought on mortgages while these houses are bough through full cash payment.

Are you from Karachi? I cant think of ONE person in the upper middle class who lives in Bahria town. Maybe in Pindi, or Lahore, or etc it can be different.

And its not because of the size of the house. Its the Location.

no, but i have been to the lahore one since it was a mini block of houses in 2003/4 to what it is today.

Its definatly upper class with some pockets dedicated to low income houses, basically for PR, like the awami houses which never even got built in lahore but they made a huge deal out of it like MR had become the new edhi, now there no where to be seen, i head a few got made in pindi but thats it.

As for location, its the same in lhr and in pindi - they are located well out of the city, because thats the only place they can get lots of land. But there are upper class people who prefer to live away from the hustle and bustle of city in more peace.

I just cant think of any middle class person who can put togeher 3/4 crores in one go and say hes a middle class.

Karachi is way more expensive than Lahore or Pindi. If you have a 3/4 crore house in Karachi you are middle class.

You can check out real estate prices in Karachi. Look at what Bahria town is charging, and compare it to more upscale areas like Clifton, DHA, KDA, Pechs, Karsaz, Askari. Its not even close.

The reason people are going to Bahria town Karachi is that they cant afford to live in the posh areas of Karachi. Their is nothing wrong with that, but unfortunately for them they are middle class.

Building a house in general implies one is of the upper middle class or has been smart in savings and investments.

I wouldnt say DHA and Bahria are the representation of the elite . Maybe areas like Clifton in Karachi can be considered posh areas.

1 Kanal plots in DHA and Bahria are around 2 crore . 1 Kanal plots closer to the centre of all major cities can be 5 to 8 times more expensive.

You are confusing DHA City with DHA. You are not getting 1 kanal plot in DHA for 2 crore.

DHA city is in the outskirts of Karachi. DHA is next to Clifton.

The rate at with real state is overtaking the traditionally agricultural land, I’m afraid the state will have to buy overseas agricultural land to meet the local demand for food and water. Since we are a poor nation we won’t either have the expertise in negotiating such agreements but we’ll also not have deep enough pockets, or even the will do any proper planning in that scenario. The country is a real dystopia in the making for the poor and middle class.
