Anyone been to Baku? Any good recommendations restaurants, things to do?

Not as artificial and soulless apparently. I’ve been to Dubai 4 times and don’t like it

I have lived in Dubai so I know more about it than you. How do you know Baku is not artificial if you have never been there?

I’m just going by what my mom said and the fact that I find Dubai artificial. Congrats on knowing more about it but that doesn’t matter to me. A lot of people love to visit Dubai too but that doesn’t change my stance on it since many people only care about the superficial things.

Baku is on my list !

Did you mom enjoy her time there? Any tips on local food, gifts, places to see?

I forgot all the specifics but from the pictures she sent it seemed very interesting and I’d like to go there some time

I went to baku on my honeymoon at the start of year 2018.
The city has a nice historic side to it. Be sure to visit flame mountains, an old museum (where they have remains of trade links between old baku and indian people), mud volcanoes, old city tower etc
The weather was utmost cold back in january, and the breeze from caspian sea warranted wearing leather jackets.
I did not like local azerbaijan food, so I mostly relied on international chains, for example, cafe rock.
For some weird reason, the locals of baku fix their gaze on you a lot. Initially it felt extremely uneasy, but eventually got used to it.
Though one of the drivers, straight after our arrival at the airport, ripped us off by charging around 4k rs for only a few miles of drive to the hotel, and left a really bad taste--he may have just been a one-off, because our remaining days at baku were very pleasant and peaceful. The people of that country really respect Pakistanis for supporring them oagainst Armenians: in fact the hotel boulevard manager upgraded our room for free, just by learning that me and my wife were Pakistani.

If you plan on visiting Baku, please dont choose summer because I have heard it gets humid in that season. If I were you, I'd pick winter.

I went to uzbekistan and Tajikistan this winter break. LOVED IT, especially Uzbekistan. I had some days left over and i wanted to go to Baku but got lazy. Meet fellow travelers and they all loved/Liked Baku. Howver they all liked uzbekistan better overall. So much history.

It's a historical city, great climate, beauiful mountains and valleys near by, also the reason why Dubai is called an "aritfiical city" is because of its demographics - over 90% of the population are expat workers so it has no real culture and the native Arabian culture doesn't show through where as Baku is almost entirely inhabited by ethnic Azeris as well as other ethnicites of the Caucasus region, so you can experience actual culture when you visit.

I have been there. Went in January last year with a tour group from my uni. Technically we visited other cities as well e.g Shahdag (where there is a ski resort) plus Qabala. Beautiful, scenic places.

Had the best time of my life there once I got used to the cold. Lots of sightseeing opportunities (especially the older part of the city) plus shopping on Nizami Street.

It's also a very liberal country, alcohol is sold and consumed openly, plus it has a very vibrant nightlife.

Local food is pretty bland tbh, plus you can have trouble communicating with the locals. They absolutely LOVE Pakistanis though.

Would definitely love to visit again.

Baku is also on my list. I have been friends with few Azerbaijanis in my class in Germany. Very lovely people and they always try to help me either in my studies or in some ways and never expect anything in return unlike people from our own countries. And, I am more than sure, in winter, it will be a lovely time to visit the city. I have been to Dubai but there is no atmosphere in the city just tick off the box and tell your friends that you have seen the largest building even though half the building will be empty just like any other building in Dubai. However, anything outside Indian subcontinent is a heaven for us so can not say even if Dubai is a bad place for some.
