Bangladesh vs West Indies: Umpire’s wrong ‘No ball’ causes controversy in 3rd T20I

Controversy erupted during the third T20I between Bangladesh and West Indies in Mirpur after Liton Das was caught in the 4th over in Oshane Thomas’ over. The umpire Tanvir Ahmed called the delivery as a “no-ball” giving Das another life in the match. But the West Indies skipper Carlos Brathwaite contested the decision, insisting that Thomas had not overstepped.

The replays later confirmed that Thomas had some part of his foot behind the line. West Indies demanded for a review on the on-field decision. But Brathwaite was told that the rules remain unclear on whether one can seek a review on such calls.

The players indulged in a discussion on the field which prompted match referee Jeff Crowe to come down to the dugout. Brathwaite and Windies coaching staff indulged in a long discussion with Crowe to discuss what to do next.

With the play stopped for nearly eight minutes, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan also came out to the infield to have a chat with the match referees. Brathwaite was told that he could not seek a review as it became clear only after television replays that it was not a no-ball.

Not only Das was given a life, but the next delivery was declared as a Free Hit, which was struck for a six by Soumya Sarkar. Luckily for the visitors, they managed to bowl out the hosts for 140 and win the match by 50 runs to clinch the series 2-1.

This was not the only instance of bad umpiring in the series. In the previous T20I, both the umpires had given an LBW decision, despite the batsmen getting an inside edge. Windies had managed to turn both the reviews in their favour using DRS.

Shameful umpiring and day light cheating from this BD umpire. ICC must ban him and also give a warning to BCB

There are no neutral umpires in this match, all four are from the home side. Is that allowed?

Can someone provid context to this thread?

The umpire gave 2 no balls in an over when there were none and one of the no balls even yielded a wicket, after it being found that it wasn't a no ball, rather than giving the batsman out or declaring the ball a dead ball. The umpires went ahead and had WI bowl an additional ball as a free hit, if this umpire is given another game, BD has no shame.

Legend. Won the match for WI. BD team got pumped up and lost their head.

Forget WI, BD themselves will get him sacked for losing this series.

Liton Das was out but umpire gave no ball. Replays on big screen shows it was not a no ball but still umpire retained the decision. Das remained not out and got free hit.

Umpires dont change decisions after watching replays on big screen unless it is reffered to third umpire. Did not watch the incident. If it was a mistake by onfield umpires then it was a mistake. But dont suggest that umpires should have changed the decision after watching replays on the big screen. It has never happened in the history of cricket.

Thanks.

That is appalling.

I'm pretty sure it's allowed in T20Is but not in Tests or ODI's.

On topic, that was some awful umpiring, foot was clearly behind the line, and thank God WI won this game otherwise this would have been an even bigger controversy.

It gets worse when BD delusional fans defend such cheat decisions by saying that BD players intentionally losing to compensate for umpiring mistakes ha ha

Not so much of a controversy in a meaningless T20 game. That umpire actually helped the Windies in the long run.

What is surprising is no one called out on Braithwaite who is a professional player for making such a big deal over a poor call. Goes to show the hypocrisy on this forum.

I can undersand why he made a big deal. Could have easily lost WI the game. Things get heated out in the middle.

Then why do people start crying whenever a fan calls out on poor umpiring? It goes to show that even a professional player can lose his cool over really poor umpiring.

There's a difference between making a bad lbw decision and calling a no ball correctly. The lbws/caught behinds are the harder bits. Checking no balls should be basic stuff for the umpires, and it was a shocking mistake.

Well a no ball will most likely just result in a free hit whereas lbw/caught can result in a big wicket. Carlos Braithwaite made way too big deal and played mind games in which case he won in the end.

Brathwaite by asking for right decision to be made was playing mind games? Wow!

The umpire was poor no doubt, but WI bowling was also pathetic in that first 4 overs. BD scored like 60 runs, but that poor umpiring and 30 min delay sucked the whole momentum out of the game. I dont even think you can use DRS over a no ball call.

There were plenty far worse decisions even in the Aus vs Ind series i.e Pujara edge, Finch, Kholi caught etc.

I thought you're not supposed to have home-team umpires?

Did they change the rules, again?

That's a good question though. If you can't use DRS for a no ball call, then why DRS starts with checking No Ball and even if decision was to be overturned in favour of bowler, they stay with on-field decision courtesy No Ball which wasn't called in first place.

Fact check #1: BD were 32/1 in 3 overs and had it not been for pathetic umpiring i.e 2 wrong no balls BD would have been 40+/2 with Liton given out

Fact check #2: delay was not 30 minutes rather whole over took 9 minutes

Stop twisting facts and just admit mistakes. Your umpire tried to cheat and got caught then shameless batsman showed no class. Losers

Yes, there are reviews available for lbw/caught, but it's more understandable when mistakes are made in these situations and one tends to sympathise with the umpire unless it's an absolute HOWLER but I'm sorry to say that it's unforgivable to make the mistake the umpire did today and I have no sympathy for the criticism he is bound to receive.

BD team is blessed with very passionate followers, they always support them , their fans and umpires alike .

I feel the Asian umpires really need a training or I think they feel too much pressure . Very poor Asian umpires now in the ICC panel

That's Donald Trump level of lying in that post. 30 runs came in that one over with 2 or 3 wrongly given no-balls. It was an 8 minute delay.

The only thing pathetic is your logic.

Glad to see the West Indies refusing to take crap and incompetence from the minnows

Funny thing is Bdesh still lost by 50 runs! How horrendously bad they are is a matter of a different debate.

Comical and yet oddly inspiring how BD fans defend everything to do with their team and umpires - even something as blatant as that!

Some other teams are more balanced.

On the other side, Pakistanis will probably stick a knife through their own team. Just watch them downplay every good performance by the team by providing 'context' and citing earlier failures.

Neither know how they come across.

I thought you're not supposed to have home-team umpires?

Did they change the rules, again?

I think it's fair game in T20s.

Pity they don't win anything and return the love.

BD is one of the Fastest improving teams in the history of cricket. Mention few teams that have achived as much as Bangladesh have within such a short a period of time. Remember 1932-1950? :))

Nobody cares about international T20s. At least knowledgeable Bangladeshi suppeures don't. International T20s r taken for fun if u didn't know that already. Its ODIs and tests that matters and we know that we r the second best odi team from Asia and on par with Pakistan in test.

Er....no?

Hope one day future Bangladeshi fans have enough of a highlight reel and can then claim that they don't remember 1999 - 2018*

The batsman should hv walked atleast after watching the replay. But such display of professionalism cant be expected from BD players.

That is as blatantly bad as it gets in this day and age!

Haha, I never troll man. I always make posts based on actual facts. Its quite well kown here :)

Football has always ruled in this part of the world. Cricket had no place what so ever. First class cricket was first established in India almost 100 years back. I suppose even back then it was known as Ranji trophy, isnt it? But still India haven't managed to win a single test series in Australia or SA even though they have been playing first class cricket for close to 100 years now.. Again, I'm not putting down anyone here. Not every team can have the potential of Bangladesh cricket team, I understand that fact.

I m just trying to put things into perspective. Nothing else. Then look at the first class structue in Bangladesh. Even 20 years haven't passed since we have established our own first class cricket, but that structure has already produced one of the greats of the of the game ie Shakib, as well as world class players like mushy, Tamim, Fizz. Just imagine, what we would've done if we had a first class structure with 100 years of experience like Ranji. As a team, we r in a different league Bro.

Bangladesh Cricket keeps hitting fresh rock bottoms.

As an outsider, you keep thinking surely this will be last time but it never is.

Ironically, some of these same defenders of crappy umpiring had the gall to blame their pathetic losses to poor umpiring.

True Champs.

BD team realized that whining isn't going to win them matches, so they resort to cheating. You can't become a bettet team until you shed the minnow mentality.

Haven’t watched the game, but that’s very disgraceful. Umpiring has been awful this series, at the end justice has been served and West Indies won. They were the better team in T20. This umpire needs to be sacked.

People comparing him to Steve Buckner, oh please Steve was a very good umpire compared to him. Steve was class.

Wow that is some delusional bubble you live in mate. I am pretty sure no one misses a nights sleep thinking about your world class players. Tbh, I am disappointed by Bangladesh's progress and they have been quite slow compared to other Asian teams both past and present. The only current fast growing asian team is Afghanistan, I bet they will surpass Bangladesh pretty quickly.

Like seriously?! on par with Pakistan in Tests? Where did you get that from? I will be surprised if Bangladesh lasts more than 3 days against Pakistan anywhere in the world. Yes and that is talking about a Pak team that is utter crap these days in Tests. I wish PCB stops being a jerk and invites the BCB team for a series.

Note: I gave you the benefit of the doubt in ODIs because of a few successive defeats but being 2nd in ODIs is still a tall claim when you rank below Pakistan in the ODI rankings too.

Either the umpire in question cheated or corruption here is involved.

No way this is accidental. One call maybe, two in an over? In a series where the WI have been getting lots of bad calls? Nope, warrants investigating

How many warnings are due for BCCI? I have been brought up seeing biased cheating umpiring in home serieses of Indian umpires in 90s. don't try to find mountains out of molehills.

I agree with your post, the umpires are bought. I was watching the highlights and some of the lbw decisions were disgraceful, hit the bat and given lbw, thank god for review system. It can be linked to election year and Hasina is a huge supporter of Bangladesh Team, maybe the umpire wanted a free flat and a car. Bangladeshi Umpires are notorious and corrupt.

You are absolutely spot on, WI lost both the test series and ODI series because umpires cheated.

WI also lost both ODI and T20 series in WI because the same umpires were there and helped BD win those games.

At absolutely zero point in my post did I say WI lost due to bad umpiring, I merely said they've gotten rough calls, which they have, and that, it seems extremely likely in this case, that the umpire in question is either cheating or being bought.

For you to act like I said WI lost only due to umpiring speaks volumes about yourself and your insecurity and immaturity. Grow up. I am not questioning Bangladesh or its cricket team, rather this obvious fraud of an umpire.

I watched our batting innings and yes umpiring was bad. We dont defend dodgy umpiring regardless of whether it was in our favour or against it.

Also why people making a mockery of us losing a T20I? The new WI side look very composed and are gelling together nicely. Besides we have played 6 matches against them and we won 3 of them this year. So the question is, how are we minnows?

We thumped them in tests. We thumped then in ODIs though we lost one match in the last over. Other 2 matches we bossed them.

I am not in favour of poor umpiring. Never ever.

And stop nonsense like "cheating". This is the era of DRS.

Man I love the fact that our team is getting so much attention these days albeit hatred.

With a 65% win record in ODIs, 50% in tests and 33% in our weakest format we haven't done bad yet we get labelled as minnows. Also might also be mentioned we played 0 matches against associstes.

While I don't support shenanigans, I think Bangladesh getting so much attention is a proof that we are improving. 10 years back no one would even care. Now they do. I am sure MMHS bhai will agree.

Let raise some funds and get his eyesight check by a qualified ophthalmologist, he might not be a corrupt person, just had a bad eyesight.

Who bribed and bought the umpire, BCB right? Your post suggested as if WI was getting bad calls left, right and center which resulted in them losing the ODI series as well.

Here is how WI batsman got out in the two ODIs that BD won.

ODI 1
Wicket Decision

1 Caught/Valid Call
2 Caught/Valid Call
3 Caught/Valid Call
4 bowled
5 Caught/Valid Call
6 Caught/Valid Call
7 Caught/Valid Call
8 Caught/Valid Call
9 Caught/Valid Call

ODI 3
Wicket Decision

1 Caught/valid call
2 bowled
3 bowled
4 LBW/Umpire Call
5 Caught/valid call
6 Caught/valid call
7 Caught/valid call
8 bowled
9 LBW/Umpire Call

There are three tiers of teams across formats.

Tier 1: England, India

Tier 2: Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, West Indies

Tier 3: Minnows

Didn't see the game today and I was so, so, so happy with Soccer scores today (those who follow EPL should know why :) ), that didn't bother to indulge into argument .... then went to Niagara.

We are definitely improving which'll seek some attention - positive, negative doesn't matter as long you are in discussion. However, what I have heard/read from my sources regarding Umpiring - those 2 fools need boil egg treatment, that too not duck egg. While Umpiring, you can cheat and you can be incompetent, but it gets badly exposed when you are an incompetent cheat. I have to appreciate WIN players here that Thomas didn't delivery couple of tight slaps. We might not see these stooges to stand in Internationals in near future, which probably is only way to damage control.

Lol that is proper cheating :)) :)) - The umpire should get banned IMO.

I think they are dense. And incompetent. There is no way a sensible man can think that he can get away with that kind of calling.
They are not cheats. I don't think so.

Fact check #1: BD were 32/1 in 3 overs and had it not been for pathetic umpiring i.e 2 wrong no balls BD would have been 40+/2 with Liton given out

And after the match started Sarkar hit the very next ball for a six(which was a free hit)
It was in the next over that they lost 2 wickets which changed the complexion
And such shots weren't unexpected from players of a team like BD because they have done that in the past as well
If I was a Bangladeshi I would have bashed Sarkar & Shakib for their poor shots instead of giving lame excuses

Hotstar has the entire 15 minute over on their site - if Indian viewers want to watch it for reference.

The West Indian reaction is justified. Incompetent umpire is incompetent.

That's Donald Trump level of lying in that post. 30 runs came in that one over with 2 or 3 wrongly given no-balls. It was an 8 minute delay.

Bangladesh posters on this forum are claiming that they don't care about t20is

But their board & players do

That's why BD board organised a 3 match t20i series with WI so that they can overtake AFG & SL to move into top8
None of their key players were rested
Still they lost

This loss means they will stay in top10 and have to play associates to get into Super12 of next T20 WC

On the other hand a new Full member like Afghanistan will be having direct entry
Isnt it embarrassing for them?

Bangladesh are so bad that despite the umps doing their best to help them out they still end up losing by 50 runs :)))

Pls my friend. If u don't agree with me, its fine. But there shouldn't be any doubt avout the fact that I always make posts based on actual facts.

Long before the Asia Cup I told everyone that Bangladesh is by far the second best odi team from Asia. Nobody agreed with me and called me delusional and what not. What was the end result? Yes another epic level of thrashing was dished out to Pakistan in the Asia cup.

Pakistan without Misbah and younis is quite weak in the test format. If the match is played in Bangladesh, I have no doubt that we'll easily win. In UAE it will be 50/50.

Didn't know this. Hope Afghanistan rocks the show!

It has happened before -

It has happened before -

This is called admitting own mistake for the sake of integrity of the game.

Bangladeshi umpires, probably due to their proud ego, didnt want to accept the mistake.

Unprofessionalism and incompetence I say. Not surprised it was from Bangladesh though.

How many warnings are due for BCCI? I have been brought up seeing biased cheating umpiring in home serieses of Indian umpires in 90s. don't try to find mountains out of molehills.

Stop being so defensive and accept your countries mistake for once. This was no biased umpiring, it was purely deliberate cheating. Also, Liton Das should hv walked himself after seeing that no-ball in giant screen but shamelessly stayed back to face the free hit. BD fans and players need to go a long way to learn professionalism. For the same poor umpiring, Shakib walked off with his whole team in SL. Why couldnt he ask Liton Das here to walk out when he is clearly out? Every tournament BD play, they create a nuisence. Nidahas trophy fight with SL, breaking down dressing room, website hacking after losing Asia cup final etc etc. Looks like its becoming a norm for BD team.

Also stop doing this whataboutary about BCCI/India everytime. Show me one instance when an Indian umpire openly cheated like this. There is a difference between giving wrong decisions and deliberate cheating.

What's the point of playing then? Bangla are so desperate to win few games, it's beyond pathetic when they opt for such cheap tactics.

Yeah, the one guy who can definitely be hauled up in this entire thing is that batsman Liton Das.

Should've walked. The umpire may have been plain incompetent, but the batsman standing there after watching everything on the giant screen and the resultant pandemonium is nothing short of a cheat.

Also on the first 'no ball' ,the umpire had called the shot a six and later changed the decision to a boundary after watching the replay, why couldn't he rectify his mistake in the case of no ball too if that was the case?
Even commentators mentioned it as well.
Absolutely pathetic umpiring.

Also on the first 'no ball' ,the umpire had called the shot a six and later changed the decision to a boundary after watching the replay, why couldn't he rectify his mistake in the case of no ball too if that was the case?

That's why I think he's incompetent full stop. Also seems to have a history with wrong calls.

The India - Australia and England - Sri Lanka series made me question why umpires worldwide have stopped calling no-balls unless a wicket falls and they go upstairs to check. Now we are greeted with this Tanvir Ahmed who is the absolute trigger happy other extreme. ::J

Any batsmen with an ounce of integrity in his situation would have walk away after seeing that replay on the giant screen. And if not, their captain would have asked them to walk away keeping in mind Shakib walked in to the field to resolve the issue. And then their fans have the nerve to whine about that Liton Das dismissal in the Asia Cup which was definitely out.

What a shameless bunch!

Yeah, the one guy who can definitely be hauled up in this entire thing is that batsman Liton Das.

Should've walked. The umpire may have been plain incompetent, but the batsman standing there after watching everything on the giant screen and the resultant pandemonium is nothing short of a cheat.

Their captain as well. He waked in to the field and yet was pretty happy with what happened.

I'm a BD sympathizer in general and don't like when Indian and Pakistani posters gang up to bash them unnecessarily but the attitude shown by all the Bangladeshi posters here has been appalling to say the least.

Even the likes of Executioner who is a good poster in general , have come in the defense of this farce which tells you how deep the problem really is. This way these people would never be able to earn the respect of their rivals and would always be the subject of the mocking from the opposition.

Silly as always from you. Why Liton will walk out? Did Rohit walk out after that dreadful decision of no ball off Rubel in quarter final of WC 2015? It's unpire's decision. It was a no ball and it was a wrong decision by umpire, not off Liton. NO+BALL+1.jpg
What is the definition of cheating and wrong decision? Millions of times in the history of cricket that umpire wrongly gives a no ball decision. It was clearly a wrong decision. Grow up man, probably you are of teenage . You have a habit to poke at us always and make mountains of molehills.

Is this wrong or cheating?
