BCCI is working on the idea of finally allowing U-23 players to participate in 'The Hundred', a brainchild of the England and Wales Cricket Board, from 2022.

For now, the under-23 age-category players, both capped and uncapped, and not on national duty, are being considered. However, TOI understands this is only at a deliberation yet and both cricket boards are nowhere close to confirmation of any sorts yet.

If and when this happens, it’ll be a huge step for the Indian cricket board, which has till now shied away from allowing its active (waged) cricketers to play abroad. The BCCI prefers not to allow its players to play in leagues overseas because the IPL loses a certain bit of exclusivity.

The BCCI is keen on grabbing the month of March for IPL when the new Future Tours Program (FTP) comes into effect.

For that reason, it’ll require other boards to side with India’s line of thought. A quid-pro-quo is the only way forward.

The pressure on broadcasters to cram in double-headers has also been seen as detrimental to the prospects of getting top dollar when BCCI floats the tender for media rights later this year.
“A bigger window for the IPL in future will be BCCI’s biggest takeaway from this,” industry executives said.

The only reason why the BCCI is offering this is because they want their players to have some experience in this format just in case it becomes the next big format of cricket so India doesn't have a disadvantage. I don't think the IPL should get a separate window, if it does then it has to be required to stop discriminating players based off national origin but even then by allow one member country to have it's domestic league have its own window that pauses all international cricket puts all the other member boards and their cricket teams at a huge disadvantage for their own development and revenue generation, it's not like the IPL has enough jobs to accommodate every central contracted cricketer from each cricketing nation

So BCCI is planning to increase the IPL window. Not sure many would be very fond of that idea.

Man this low grade league tamasha IPL is killing cricket. Why don't they have IPL for whole year.why bother with international cricket.

So IPL now March April....to avoid the summer heat...initially it was meant for summer I guess...
Anyways....they can do whatever they like....but if they r not being hindered....this ganguly administration will run riot..and will try to influence each and every thing to their advantage.....

Why does IPL need a window? All of the players prefer to play in IPL than for their country and miss games anyway and their boards let them. Don't understand the need for a window. At least let those without IPL contracts keep playing in that period

Isn't March to May the Indian 'summer'?

Summer in Indian subcontinent is from April to May....that's when schools has summer vacation...

No idea why March is targeted....but it's unwise of other boards or ECB to allow such things...international cricket will get affected severely....esp those players who don't play IPL

Remind of this...
Greedy people are never satisfied that they have enough. They’re like sharks that spend their entire life hunting and consuming. All the oceans in the world can’t satisfy these eating machines.
Frank Sonnenberg,
Seems like BCCI will Eat PSL too "killing two birds with one stone”
If we got March window too there's no way any peak international player would opt for PSL it's a direct clash.

without meaning to sound derogatory towards indian players, barring 1or 2 im not sure what an uncapped indian u23 player would bring to the 100 in terms of commercial value vs a fully fledged international from another country especially with limited overseas slots?

Even if 0.01% of the Indian fan base turns up to watch Abhishek Sharma or Riyan Parag or Ravi Bishnoi, they'll outnumber the whole cricket watching public in the UK....

i understand and agree with that but the aim of the 100 is to catapult the game in the UK rather than anywhere else. A cricket mad country like india would still watch the tournament regardless of who plays in it so the revenue is there anyway. England are aiming for the cream of the crop in terms of international players rather than a riyan parag or ravi bishnoi

It says both capped and uncapped players. Gill, Pant, Ishan Kishan all are U23.

my mistake i read it as uncapped, fair enough few rising superstars could be picked up, but ithink ECB will play hard ball with any deal on the table.

If BCCI is successful with this idea of IPL in march it will mean PCB will have to find another slot for PSL.

I always wanted PSL to held in October, so I guess PCB might target this window.

Are these guys actually likely to be good enough to be picked up though.

No it’s not. Summer in India is from Feb-May.

India definitely have summer more than two months. BCCI are looking to add extra month when they add two more teams in India. School months won’t have much impact as most board exams are over by mid-March.

More than good enough for franchise cricket.

Not convinced they'd be considered good enough to displace the 24 overseas players picked or even be top of the list from those that went unselected. Especially without any international cricket behind them.

Franchise would love to field Indian player(s) purely based on marketing prospect. Indian cricketer(s) would yield more eyeballs than others. At the end of the day, it’s all about MONEY!

maybe good enough for BPL / CPL but 100 is going down a different path. They want superstars like Kohli , Rohit

Kohli is like Goose that lays golden egg. Allowing Kohli play in other leagues means killing the goose. BCCI are greedy bunch not dumb.

BCCI will never ever let their A grade players play in any other leagues.

That's the benefit of the franchises not being privately owned, for those involved in the team it's not all about money. The team directors/coaching staff/analyst don't really benefit from picking people based on how many viewers they'll bring in rather than how good they actually are. It's why the likes of Gayle, Malinga and Shahid Afridi were all ignored at the original draft despite being useful draws for viewership/marketing.

If that’s the case then I just don’t see how U23 players would add anything(with exception to players like Gill). There is absolutely no way BCCI will let their A grade players to take part in any leagues outside of IPL.

This looks more like March, April and May. They are likely adding a month to the existing schedule. Being done because of the upcoming expansion next year to 10 teams. I am sure the deal will also involve all England players in the IPL being available for the full season.

Also the upcoming renewal of the broadcasting rights in two years time. I am sure the IPL will be looking for a significant increase to the current $1.6 Billion deal.

I do not see any reason why PSL should move. The IPL and PSL target different audience. Also, I don't think there are too many players that play both leagues.

I dont mind any of the gimmicks leagues want to add but, as a cricket fan really dont want the international cricket calendar to keep on squeezing. 3 months without much international cricket, thats going to be tough on any genuine cricket fan. :mw1

So really hope they can find some other schemes rather than the "Destroying international cricket" one.

A genuine cricket fan will love any cricket, not just international cricket.😁😁

Feb is not summer LOL.. plz don't say to anybody.....they will laugh....it's spring.....

Cricket has 3 formats and T20 provide a very limited fix to genuine fans let alone just league cricket. :))

Also add to this the fact that there is not direct association for non Indian fans with any of the teams, it naturally just doesnt give that adrenalin rush even if they follow. I think majority of Indians would also take Ind vs Aus or something rather than two IPL teams competing each other if they have to chose just one of them? No?

As long as Aus remain a top class team. If the recent trend of India hammering Aus continues, I am sure interest will dwindle.

Leagues aren't int cricket, they don't give you that fix (I have the same issue with PSL too)

Cricket is starting to get very, very boring.

The greed of the BCCI will kill the game within my lifetime.

PCB will be most hurt by this. Pakistani players dont play in the IPL, and the board doesnt get any payments.

I wonder if BCCI will agree to increase foreign cap to 5 to get more boards to agree? Otherwise, I dont think its fair to monopolize the cricket calendar for 2 entire months.

Foreign cap is 5 from next year. Already decided.

There will come a day when the IPL has about 16 franchises and the window extends from January to June, with limited room to schedule international cricket.

In fact, if the BCCI wanted to declare war on the international calendar today, they can extract any concessions they desire from the ICC and the other boards. It's a festering wound on the face of the sport, and it likely won't get any better.

If summer is till May then what are the sweltring months of June, July and August then? Kuch bhii..
And if Feb is summer then where is spring? Hadh hai yar.

Dont see cricket existing anymore then in its current shape and form. Non indians will lose interest and eventually the game would die.

Unfortunately cricket doesn't exist in the shape and form it was a couple of decades ago, the financial disparity between India and the rest has caused the structure of the sport to implode. There's no way back now sadly.

Most none Indian boards struggling financially shows none Indians have already lost interest.

Are you kidding me?

Three months of Mumbai vadapavs,. Chennai Idlis and Kolkata Rosgullas? Is this a joke or what?

I'm all for the IPL as it generates the €€€ for the sustenance of Indian domestic cricketers and gives a pseudo-international experience to uncapped youngsters....but there's got to be a limit to the madness.

2 months was already too long. BCCI better turn this into a conference style format with more teams and lesser games in one and a half month duration.....or I'm afraid they're only slow poisoning the golden egg laying duck.

It just shows that you have no knowledge about India.
Spring season is mostly in Northern India, but in West/South it’s already 30+c. That’s not spring but early summer whereas April and May are peak summer months where temperature can be in high 30s or low 40s.
June is traditionally monsoon month but due to climate change first monsoon often arrives late in the month. That’s one of the reason why BCCI is extending IPL for March and not June to avoid monsoon rain.
I have spent more than 20 years in India to know what I’m talking about. Next time learn about India before spouting nonsense.

Non-Indians have already lost interest in cricket. They are only two events keeping their interest somewhat in cricket - Ashes and IPL due to presence of top players from world over. Rest of the bilaterals and franchise tournaments get less audience than Indian kabaddi league.

No one is stopping Pakistan to play bilaterals or PSL during March-April like it did in 2021. In fact, many other countries will like to play bilateral, minus their top players of course, with Pakistan at this time and get through with their obligation.

This will be a great opportunity for Pakistan to improve its ranking in all tables.

Bangladesh, Pakistan, SL, Zimbabve, Kenya teams are hardly affected by IPL so they can continue to play with each other or against weakened South Africa and West Indies.

Looks like another Big3 - I scratch your back and you scratch mine.

How many players play both IPL and PSL, not even 10 probably......

so I don't think PSL frankly will have any impact.... Apart from the fact that PP will be flooded with IPL vs PSL comparisons....

IPL is eating sumer of Pakistan cricket, pcb should plan to organize PSL parallel to IPL, and when psl ends play some lower ranked teams or a tournament between WI, SL BAN and Pak will be enough for the fans,

This will be death knell for IPL then...and also may erode indian market a bit...bcoz i m sure indian public will be too tired to follow it...over OTT or even TV....

Don't know Ganguly was this greedy.....

Add NZ too......it has enough talent....too compete without Boult...kane.....

I think best way 2 counter it is 2 arrange annual tri series or quadrangular series with Afg Pak Bd SL....may add IRE too...they r pretty solid in ODIS. .this tournament can easily run for a month if each team plays other 3 times in a round robin format ...

Tri series r the best bet....

I find existing two months duration of IPL with ~60 matches too long. Don't know where it's heading.
On top of that we'll have The Hundreds. What they want to achieve OR add to cricket by reducing 20 balls per inning.

I lose interest in the IPL after its first month and I assume many indians do as well, who is going to sit through 3 months? Hope the ECB and CA don't relent.

This is just the beginning. Those who used to ask me why I don't like IPL would have got their answers now. Continue supporting this junk league and it will continue eating international cricket calendar. Players like Bumrah will keep playing 3-4 months of low quality IPL and keep taking family breaks during international cricket but we can't even raise an eyebrow over it because all of us real cricket fans are jealous. Let's see who watches three months of IPL from start to finish every year. :rabada2 :inti

Anything more than a two months window will be too much even the Indians will get bored.
Ideally it should be a one month window, nothing more.
Yeah IPL is as good as t20 world cup but even t20 world cup takes 1/3 time to complete.

That's because most of the indians prefer quantity over quality and IPL is not that different. :inti

I don't mind IPL going to 10 teams and into more than one month window as long as they don't eat into International cricket schedule. 2 months of IPL is a bit too much though.

I hope IPL does not get expanded more than 8 teams. Never a big fan of franchise based system, it's all consumption oriented and does not have any legacy. Plus the period of April-May is worst to play in India with high degree of heat. I am sure the harsh climate further impacts the players .

Looks like a 3 month IPL is what is coming. But the risk and reward is with IPL.

They have made a play to extend it figuring they can make more $$$. If the people get bored like you are assuming then it's an expensive lesson for them. If they don't then all $$$ and power to the IPL.

What is happening is the free market is in play. Let the fans make the decision. Which is the right way.
