What's new

Best shot you have ever seen?

If you include TV, Utube, recording, etc then nothing beats the Sharja six -- just for the huge impact it has made over the years.

Umar Akmal's straight six(I think it was bowled by Malinga) on his way to his maiden century on the 4th ODI in Sri Lanka(August 2009)

What I liked about it that it was very straight with a lot of power!:)

I dont have a link,though.:|

Considering the bowler, the manner of how afridi timed the shot is amazing. :afridi

Another shot I havnt been able to find a video for is the one kamran akmal played against steyn in the semi final at the t20 world cup, the straight six, what a shot!

Before I even saw the post, I knew the batter would be Afridi, *sigh* there are other batsmen apart from Afridi you know ...

Well he likes that shot, why you seem to have a problem with that. One can even love a shot by McGrath or Dizzy. Its upto them.

Really really difficult to judge. If you're talking about sixes, the best three that come to mind are:

Afridi's monster hit to Symonds.
Abdul Razzaq hitting the biggest six at Christchurch vs New Zealand.
Yuvraj Singh vs Jerome Taylor in T20. As Ian Bishop said, 'The wrist work was phenomenal'.

Anyway, these are three that first come to mind where hitting is concerned. I wouldn't include your one as the ball was overpitched. My examples are just pure batting and hitting expertise.

Anyway, there are a lot of 'pure' cricket shots, such as Rahul Dravids cover drive and square drive in an ODI once which were the best of both those shots I've seen, but he thought 'that's enough 4's for this year'. Also Saeed Anwars square cuts. :14:

Sachin Tendulkar hooking Andrew caddick out of the ground in the 2003 WC game after Caddick promised chin music for the Indians was pretty special.

Afridi hitting Murali through the covers on consecutive balls in the T20 played in Colombo.

Was that the best shot you've ever seen or a good shot?

I would have thought the one in T20 final (6 and 4) would have been better.

there have been so many but 3 moments really stick out in my mind:

Yasir Hameed pull shot vs. Australia, a friendly ODI match before the 2004 Champions Trophy...Brett Lee at his fast and furious best, bounced Hameed and Yasir absolutely smashed it thru square leg for a blistering four

Kumar Sangakkara cover drive vs. Saurav Ganguly in the ODI series played in India before 2007 WC...Sanga just touched the ball and it zoomed thru the covers, fielders were absolutely motionless

Brian Lara sweep vs. Kumble, ODI series played in India before 2007 WC...Lara swept Kumble very fine with just his right hand and whilst wearing sunglasses...absolute class shot

the akmal six on malinga has up to be there but two more:

1. Saeed anwer sweeping Terry Alderman in 1989 onto the roof at sydney with a flick of the wrist. Unbelievable shot. Sorry no video

2. Most Viv Richards shots were amazing but the first time I saw him bat was 1984 in Gujrawalla, first of a 5 match one day series. He made 80 in 39 balls. THe winning shot was a flat pulled six of a pretty quick Mohsin Kamal which probably travelled 10 feet above the ground all the way into the stands ... hit a pole came back half way to the pitch. Unbelievable shot. Sorry no video.

Others to mention

- Mansoor akhtar hitting a young wasim akram out of the ground - 1989/90 UBL vs. PIA semi final

- Richie Richardon hooking waqar flat onto the roof in 1992

- Imran Nazir pull for six in T20 wc final 2007

Have seen many, trust me. But I like these 2 shots, against one of the biggest turner of a cricket ball in the history, hiting him against the spin was something real good.

But he played the same shot in T20 WC final after hitting a six the shot before. Just because of the pressure, I would say that was a better shot, but I understand your point. Murali in SRi Lanka turning pitches is difficult.

does not seem like you have watched much cricket mate. how old are you? 5 years?

MUHAMMAD HAFEEZ of all people, i was there for his monster six against England in an ODI, at the rose bowl in 2006.

Miandad's six in Sharjah.. Nothing compares to that.

that was NOT a great shot. full toos waist height?

it however had a huge impact on pak-india cricket.

thats all that matters bro.. impact..

But the best shots I have ever seen were either from Basit Ali against Big Bird in Sharjah or Lara against Wasim and Waqar in the Tri series in South Africa in 1993.. Amazing shots!

Yes it was a great shot. It was a pressure cooker type atmosphere and Pak needed a boundary off the last ball and Miandad pulled it off.

It truly is legendary.

Danish Kaneria´s beautful leave that got him clean bowled against I think it was Vaas? :D

or any kaneria shot or leave for that matter. :)

Imran Khan's six in the 92 world cup final.. Straight six off Illingworth. That was a huuuge boundary too.. had to be one of the biggest sixes ever.

But for me the best and most audacious strokes have come from the bat of the Great Lara.. his flick from the hips. his drives and his straight hits. Amazing.

Alec Stewart going down onto one knee, off-driving Waqar for four, and holding the pose with the bat above his head, knowing that he didn't have to run.

Kevin pieterson huge six of yasir Arafat. another when he tonked a windies bowler for a huge six at mid on during the wc. And another where he pulled Akhtar for six and the next ball caused the great chicken celebration.

Luke Wrights Six today against Haurtiz, the biggest of the CT 2009 tournament, at 103 metres, Beat Maliks 102m that he done against the windies earlier in the tournament.

Yuvraj hitting Flintoff yorker for 6

Unbelievable shot

for me i think it would have to be Inzi's six of chris harris in 1992 semifinal World Cup.
that was def something special.

Don't know about the best but the one of the most remarkable ones has to the KP switch hit off Murali for 6!

[UTUBE]dnShx-eALhY[/UTUBE]

i remember when we were at the t20 world cup where pakistan were playing england, and kp hit the straight six at the oval, best shot i have ever seen live..

A six of the last ball in the innings of any game is awesome but sorry but that was a full toss pitched on leg stump - fodder!

Did you watch this video or did you just read the title?

For the serious hits though I would nominate this for sheer awesomeness

and this because it reminded me of the Bruce Lee "one inch punches"

that has got to be the best shot...i miss those leg flicks man`

What about Ponting's straight drive (charge) in the series against England in England?

The ball dissapeared.

That's the best shot I've ever seen. Sachin was in murderous mood in that match.

The off drive Mohammad Yousuf played today which beat 2 players on the off side was pretty special too. (beautiful timing, classical shot, and was like threading the needle.)

The best to watch, but the greatest in the modern era I think Ponting is better.

What was the greatest shot ever played?

Following on from the "greatest delivery ever" thread, I thought this one might be interesting.

This one will probably have more of a "significance" factor attached to it, as I suppose there are more limitations as to how great a shot can be, and we've all seen top quality shots over and over again.

Some examples:

Javed Miandad - THAT six?

MS Dhoni - the six to win the world cup?

Inzi's six over cover off Chris Harris in the 92 semi final (one of my personal favourites).

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/3auSIUOyuzc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Probably Miandad, given the circumstances.

Why is Dhoni being considered. They needed 4 of 11 with 6 wickets in hand..........?

I think it's wrong to suggest that a shot can't be great unless the game was in the balance and it required hitting.

In the same way, the greatest delivery ever doesn't have to come at a time when the game is close. It can just happen.

Dhoni's six was significant because of what it resulted in.

Probably Miandad, given the circumstances.

What about Chanderpaul hitting 4 and 6 of last 2 deliveries to win the match? That was probably only instance when team needed 6 runs to win off last ball and Chanders did that.

The greatest ones have probably been mentioned already.

This is my favourite:

[utube]JCXnEuMPiFM[/utube]

And this innings is well worth another watch. It's full of blinding and occasionally brilliant shots - and, crucially, against great bowlers. The two sixes off Warne at 2mins30 and the next two between 6 and 8 mins are quite insane:

[utube]zQiVUM9cYmw[/utube]

Yes, a fanboy to the last, I know...

Javed's last ball SIX, considering the circumstances

Viv's last ball SIX of Hendricks (Or Both, not sure), in '79 WC final, in terms of stroke quality.

It may not be the best but my favourite was

Inzi's coming down the track nonchalent flick to the leg side whilst chewing gum and without a helmet in the 92 WC final....

See 5.11 onwards....
