While I'm not rich at all, grew up 'first world poor', I am privileged compared to most people in Pakistan as I was born in England. I see the low-level of education in Pakistan and it makes me sad. Does anyone know of any foundations where I can donate to, to help fund some education for children/university students? Ideally, I'd like it to be a fairly secular education, as I want them to be taught real science, and not with caveats.

Supporting education in Pakistan is definitely something that needs a lot of support. There is however another immediate need, and that is providing training to develop a skill set and be able to earn a living.

Myself and a few friends are supporting this program that is started by Helping Hands. It's verified to be a genuine one.

Our education system has HUGE problems that I tried to note here, and not that I oppose educating people but I think we can also look into other ways that can provide immediate relief to many suffering people who are badly crushed by the financial squeeze and sky rocketing inflation in Pakistan.

Fantastic point. It's getting a bit late, so I'll look into it tomorrow. As part of my graduate studies, I have to work as a STEM ambassador, and I was thinking of doing some stuff for kids in Pak, but I only speak (pretty rough) Pothwari so I'm slowly trying to learn Urdu haha.

But I agree, they need immediate help. I will do more digging and look at the links you provided tomorrow, thank you!

Me and my wife are supporting our nephew go to cadet college. Do you know any relations with kids that might need help?

I personally have worked with The Citizens Foundation and I cannot recommend anything more strongly if your cause is to support education for disadvantaged kids. They are all over Pakistan and see no caste, ethnicity or religion.

There’s very few organizations I would blindly trust my donations with and they along with Edhi foundation and Saylani welfare are at top of the list.

Mentoring children at TCF is one of the highlights of my life so far. I mentored 7-8 children 4-5 years ago when they were in grade 6-7 and they all appeared for metric recently.

I’m sure there’s other organizations too but this really has impressed me the most. It is my aim to be involved with this organization on a more permanent way a few years down the road when I move back to Pakistan inshallah.

This sounds very interesting. Plan to read through in detail tomorrow since sounds a bit too good to be true.

However I agree. Whenever I’m in these education related endeavors I always rue that this is such a long term investment with no guarantee it will come off. For example When I was in high school I used to teach a maid’s kid from his grade 3 to 6. His English and math was well advanced from his peers at the government school. I then went abroad for studies and work and lost touch and to my ultimate anger I found few years ago that he left schooling in grade 10. And now i wonder whether all my effort got wasted. Sure he can read Urdu and English somewhat and write enough to get by which is more than his parents ever got close to but he is unlikely to get job which can really change his family’s fortunes. However if he had stuck around and gone to university who knows...

So interested to learn more about the program you mention

Yup this NGO is doing a fantastic job and the quality of education they provide is far better than many public and private sector schools

One of the tragedies of our country is that even though we donate more than most other countries at an individual level; most of these donations and charity goes towards consumption based activities (paying off someone’s loan, helping poor couple do daughters wedding etc etc) which in my opinion Atleast have no real impact. Even charities for food and medical expenses is a short term impact activity even though it is 1000 times better than the things I mentioned earlier. But in the long term it is not helping build country a whole lot. It’s a harsh opinion and I may be wrong but that’s what I feel.

If only our zakat and charity went towards causes like Helping Hands and TCF; I think the country would be in much better reposition

Some of the kids are actually very impressive if you met them.

Actually, TCF was the first school I attended. They had a strict policy at that time to enroll just 30 students in a class.

Thanks for all the help guys, I'll do some digging for sure. Edhi foundation always seems like a safe bet, but I'll look into the other links and suggestions, too.
Kroll No one especially in mind at the moment, I do have some fairly poor relatives in Pakistan, but my family send a lot of money to them, and our relatives do, too (though they are far more affluent and are generally less generous than my parents...).
