PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said on Friday that he was "shocked" when he heard PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif's speech during the Pakistan Democratic Movement's (PDM) first rally in Gujranwala last month in which Nawaz named the country's top military leadership for orchestrating his ouster among other things.

The PPP chairman made the revelation during an exclusive interview with BBC Urdu, in which he discussed several topics, including the upcoming Gilgit-Baltistan elections and the 11-party opposition alliance.

In October, Nawaz had addressed the PDM's Gujranwala rally and accused the security establishment of being behind his ouster as prime minister and for "bringing Imran Khan into power".

In his speech, which was aired via video link from London, Nawaz had questioned who made the "state above a state" and who was responsible for the two governments in this country, going on to name Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa. He had also named Lt Gen Faiz Hameed as being behind everything.

In his interview with BBC Urdu, Bilawal said neither Nawaz nor his party had brought up naming the army or ISI chiefs when the PDM's agenda was being prepared.

"During the all-parties conference, there was debate on whether the blame should be laid on one institution or the entire establishment," Bilawal said, adding that "it was decided that a single institution would not be named, the establishment would."

Bilawal went on to say that when he explicitly heard Nawaz take the names of the COAS and the ISI chief, he was "shocked".

"It was a shock for me because, typically, we don't talk like this at rallies. But Nawaz heads his own party and I can't control what he says, just like he can't control what I say," Bilawal said.

The PPP chariman also said that the opposition did not want the military leadership to resign.

"Let me make this clear that this is not a part of our demands and does not reflect our position."

He added that personally, he refrained from levelling accusations at rallies when it comes to his own party. "But Nawaz has the right to take such a stand if he so wishes."

Bilawal said that Nawaz — who has served as the country's prime minister thrice — would not have taken the names of Gen Bajwa and Gen Faiz without evidence.

"As far as taking the names of the COAS and the ISI chief is concerned, I think — and I am certain — that Nawaz will not have done so without any evidence. Such allegations should come forward on the basis of evidence.

"These are not the kind of allegations you make against anyone during a rally. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, I have not had the opportunity to meet Nawaz in person, which is very important, so that we can discuss the matter in detail."

However, Bilawal said, he will "wait for Nawaz to bring forward evidence supporting his claims".

The PPP chief also said that in his view, the establishment had several meanings and it was not possible to point towards one individual. "Let me also say that this will not be discussed at rallies."

Bilawal also said that brining Prime Minister Imran Khan into power cannot be attributed to just one person. He also dispelled the notion that the PPP had not openly stated its stance using the PDM platform.

"The PDM came into existence during an all-parties conference called by the PPP and the agenda of the alliance is the policy of all the parties.

"Nawaz can speak in his own manner, that is his right. I will speak in my own manner."

Commenting on the inquiry into the events surrounding the arrest of PML-N leader retired Capt Mohammad Safdar in Karachi, Bilawal said he had not had further correspondence with the army chief in this regard.

"However, I am aware that an inquiry is currently ongoing. I am certain that the inquiry will be completed and those responsible will be identified and punished. Right now I am waiting patiently to be informed about the inquiry," he said.

Bilawal — who has been in Gilgit-Baltistan for the past several days drumming up support for the PPP in the upcoming legislative assembly polls — said that elections in the region should be free and transparent.

He also called the premier's announcement regarding granting the region provisional provincial status an attempt at "rigging".

"We have seen the prime minister going back on his promises. Before the 2018 elections, he promised the people of south Punjab a separate province in 100 days. This did not happen. So, we will wait and see because if the premier can make a U-turn before the election, then he can also do it after the election."

'Nawaz's statement based on facts'
PML-N leader and Nawaz's spokesperson Mohammad Zubair issued a statement shortly after Bilawal's interview was published, saying that his party respected Bilawal as he was a part of the opposition alliance.

"This is Bilawal's personal opinion. Nawaz has served as the country's premier and there was a PML-N government even after his (Nawaz's) ouster. What he (Nawaz) said at the Gujranwala rally comes from the experience of the PML-N government," Zubair said in a statement.

"This is obvious that it did not happen with the PPP. We think it is important to inform the people about what happened to ensure civilian supremacy so that what happened in the past is not repeated in the future. What Nawaz said was based on facts."

Meanwhile, Information Minister Shibli Faraz said Bilawal's statement was proof of the fact that the PDM was not united in its stance.

"Bilawal has voiced his distrust of Nawaz. This proves that the alliance of opposition parties is based on vested interests," he said.

Firdous Ashiq Awan — who has recently made a comeback as the adviser to the Punjab chief minister on information — said Bilawal's statement had put the final nail in the opposition alliance's coffin.

The PPP have played the Nooras really well. Billo has encouraged the DUFFER and his thick daughter to go all unhinged and then quietly sat back and watch the fire. He is playing the long game but his problem is that is the son of crooked family and they have looted the poor of PK and more recently of Sindh with both hands. Billo needs to take the reigns in Sindh and show some "balls" and take on his own family and the wadera and you never know.

That settles it then. If as per, Bilawal, Nawaz does not level accusations without evidence then everything that he has said about his mother, especially those lovely pics from the 90s thrown from helicopters, and his father must be true. BECAUSE Nawaz never says such things without evidence.

ISLAMABAD: Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari's statement is being twisted for political objectives, alleged PML-N vice president Maryam Nawaz, according to a report in The News on Sunday.

The PPP chairman, in his earlier interview with BBC Urdu, had said that he was “blindsided” when former prime minister Nawaz Sharif named the top military leadership in a Pakistan Democratic Movement rally last month.

Reflecting on the PML-N supremo’s move to take names during his Gujranwala speech, Bilawal told the foreign publication that it was the former premier’s personal decision.

Talking to reporters in Lahore, Maryam clarified that Bilawal did not say anything objectionable in the interview, and "both of them are not kids to be fooled around".

“We all know what the purpose of twisting this statement is. In fact, there is no such objectionable thing in Bilawal’s interview,” she asserted, adding that “distorting the statement of the PPP chairman is a failed attempt to break the alliance of opposition parties, the Pakistan Democratic Movement”.

PDM meeting to discuss GB elections, response to govt crackdown

According to The News, the 12-party alliance will devise a strategy to deal with the eventuality of a response by the government including crackdowns on workers or leaders at any point in time during the movement.

The PDM meeting, to be held under the chair of PDM chairman Fazlur Rehman, will also discuss the Gilgit-Baltistan elections, increasing price hike, and the government’s strategy to hold public meetings, say media reports.

Meanwhile, in another development, Maryam Nawaz has sought lists of those PML-N lawmakers who had opposed Nawaz Sharif’s statement about the army leadership.

You finally speak some sense. I have been hearing the same, Klasera said something similar in this program

So this is halal "selection" for you lot?

Also your information is incorrect. Even third tier PTI leader, Ali Amin Gandapur is pulling massive jalsas in GB much larger than Biloo Rani who is the head of PPP. PTI will win 12-15 seats out of the 24 available. PPP will also win some because they have some votebank in the area.

It is understood whom ‘establishment’ refers to, clarifies Maulana Fazl as PDM leaders chalk out future strategy

Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Sunday said that it was very well understood who is being addressed when the word “establishment” is used.

“This is not an issue, the media has made it an issue,” he said while responding to a question during a press conference in Islamabad.

Rehman — who is also the chief of the 11-party opposition alliance called the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) — had convened a meeting of the heads of the alliance’s constituent parties to review the prevailing political situation in the country earlier today.

“We respect the country’s institutions, but if the names of politicians can be taken […] then the name of someone belonging to the country’s institutions can also be taken. This is not a crime.”

He added that some were respectful while others were more pragmatic in this regard, before refusing to take more questions on the issue.

Rehman’s comments come days after PPP’s Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said he was “shocked” when he heard PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif’s speech during the PDM’s first rally in Gujranwala in which Nawaz named the country’s top military leadership for orchestrating his ouster among other things.

On Saturday, PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz downplayed Bilawal’s remarks and said the party had no reservations over it. “Bilawal’s statement was clear. Its misinterpretation is the need of a few people. Since (the government’s) boat is sinking, they are trying to create cracks within the PDM,” she had said.

That is one of the ****ing problem with Pakistani Governance model... One of the Problem is whenever a politician or a party makes deal with Army, people view this as political corruption of the Party only, but not of Army, who is somehow incharge of making all these black market political deals, religious violence deals and what not. Why in the world you will not call Army as equally corrupt Party?? :po:

Unless people of Pakistan Confront the Evil Empire of Pakistan Army, #civilSupremacy can never be achieved. Pakistanis will be salve of Pakistan Army... Politicians have no guns or bombs, their power is people, if people are not behind #civilSupremacy, Pakistan will remain military state, this topi drama of Corruption is ********, Biggest and most Corrupt entity in Pakistan is Army, who obviously is most power entity in Pakistan.

The military only cares about its own interests. It does this sort of political manoeuvres to silence its criticism.

Very well said. The Army can never bring economic progress. In recent times the Army generals have started acquiring land at the expense of the poor. What sort of a heartless man would deprive a poor man of the little land he has, so that he can have an estate?

However, the land was subsequently transferred to Brigadier (Retd.) Muhammad Bashir, through another administrative order. The transfer of land to the army brigadier was part of the 33,866 acres of land given to the Army GHQ in 1993 in Bahawalpur by the provincial government. The Punjab government had transferred the land without checking its title. Out of the total land given to the army, the said brigadier got 396 kanals (49.5 acres) of land, out of which about three kanals belonged to Abdul Karim.

Our economy has always grown quicker under the Generals and it wasnt Import led or Fuelled by borrowing.

PPP Co-chairman and former president Asif Ali Zardari said during the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) meeting on Sunday that the coalition should be clear about its goals and should not open up new fronts, informed sources revealed.

Attending the online meeting – which was held to review the ongoing political situation in the country and to chalk out the 11-party opposition alliance's future strategy – Zardari stressed that the PDM should stick to a clear goal, as opening up new fronts simultaneously would reap no results.

Other PDM leaders also presented different suggestions for the coalition's next moves.

ANP leader Ameer Haider Hoti suggested that PDM leaders change their tone during their jalsas to present their demands in a better fashion.

Regarding Nawaz Sharif’s earlier statements against the military leadership, Zardari and Hoti adopted a critical stance, while Mahmood Khan Achakzai said he agreed with Nawaz.

PDM chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, meanwhile said that people should not make a big deal out of Nawaz’s statement, but if different meanings are being extracted out of it, then the coalition will have to make a decision about how to proceed.

Fazlur Rehman added that Imran Khan's past speeches against the establishment should also be played during the jalsas for reference purposes.

Jamiat Ulema-i-Pakistan’s Shah Owais Noorani said that there is no room for any dialogue with the government.

Taking a contrary stance to Hoti’s proposal, Noorani said that all members of the PDM should adopt a uniform tone during their jalsas.

Aside from the suggestions, PDM leaders also announced a meeting on November 14 to finalise an "agreement" and decide the road map ahead.
