Five militants and as many civilians were killed in a gunfight and ensuing clashes with government forces in south Kashmir's Shopian and Kulgam districts on Sunday.
Director General of Police SP Vaid said that five militants were killed in a gunfight with forces in Badigam village of Shopian district.

The slain included top Hizb commander Saddam Padder and the Kashmir University professor Muhammad Rafi Bhat, who was reported missing on Friday.

“Encounter concluded at Badigam Zainapora Shopian,” he said on Twitter. He said five bodies of militants have been recovered.
The gunfight had broke out at Badigam village after army’s 44 RR launched the cordon-and-search operation in the area.
Army’s 23 Para Commandos, 34 RR, 3 RR, CRPF, and SOG were rushed as reinforcements after the contact with militants was established. In the initial firefight one SOG man, Anil Kumar and an army soldier of 44 RR were injured.

As soon as the gunfight began, youth took to streets and clashes with the forces, in a bid to help the trapped militants escape.
Government forces fired live ammunition, pellets and tear gas into the protesters, resulting into injuries to dozens of them.
A youth, identified as Asif Ahmad Mir of Rohomoo Pulwama, was critically injured after suffering a bullet injury in his head. He was shifted to SMHS hospital in Srinagar where he succumbed.

Four more civilians were killed as forces fired at protesters in Chitragam and Behibagh areas of Shopian and Kulgam districts, respectively.

The slain were identified as Zubair Ahmad Negroo of Ayangund Rajpora, Yasir of Shopian, Adil Ahmad, a resident of Ashmuji in Kulgam district andSajad Ahmad of Verinag Dooru.

Four more civilians were injured in army firing at Chitragam.

When you interfere in the middle of a shootout don’t be surprised if you end up shot yourself. No country on earth would tolerate such suicidal behaviour..

Sorry for the civilians. We have lost too much blood on both sides just because of our adamance and greed for land. Kashmir Valley should be allowed to decide its own future, Kashmiris have never wanted to live with us so why force them? I wish in 1947 itself it had become a separate country and we would then have had excellent relations with both Pakistan and Kashmir. Hope one day we do what is morally right, no amount of force can keep a land if locals resent you. Independence will come one day, may be 200 years from now. Why spill even more blood, do it in a peaceful manner now rather than wait for the inevitable.

Very less force is used against agressive, large stone pelting rabid mob in the Kashmir valley. In rest of India,if there is even any hint of violence in riots, police follow SOP and injure and kill much more. There is no use of pellet guns in riots in the rest of the country, only live bullets

As expected, some Indians have arrived with their justifications for continuation of this genocide in the territory which they have occupied against the wishes of locals.
Rather than condemning the killings of civilians, we hear that :
A) "they deserve it because they dont want us occupying them. They are all Pakistani agents"
B) "we dont kill enough people, we use less force there. We must kill more".

The collective conscience of Indians has committed suicide. You are creating nothing but hatred and it will engulf you, today, tomorrow or in a 100 years. Every occupying and invading empire thought they were doing it in the interest of their nation but they were all wrong. History will remember India's genocide of Kashmiris as one of the biggest crimes in modern day and contemporary times.

The story in a nutshell.

If they can be like the rest of us and simply head to work / school / the park / heck, climb a mountain or something, there will be none of this.

That is what British said when Indian youth was fighting for Independence. Do all of the above and let us rule you.

Why do you want foreigners to be like you?

and the fact that some local youth are helping the gunmen is not of concern to you?

Indian youth didnot kill 1000s of Indians because they were of another religion and drove them out of a area in the name of Independence struggle. Neither were 35-40% of India againist the Independence. Neither did Indian youth kill Indians because they had a different religion.

This is a religious extremism problem.

The fighters are fighting for Islamic State I think. Otherwise a mujahid doesn't die for democracy.

An interesting theory, but I would counter with another one....the Indian army unit sent into the area may be Bajrang Dal hardliners who were aiming for kill shots in a deliberate effort to reduce Kashmiri Muslim numbers.

India will just blame Pak whilst blood will continue to flow in IoK.

Comparing the current situation to British India is illogical. The British certainly did not give Indians equal democratic rights like the Kashmiris have.

I think people should focus on getting an education, getting jobs and leading their lives peacefully because I don't see this conflict getting resolved any time soon. Supporting militants will only do more harm than good. Interfering in the middle of a shootout is extremely stupid. Any kind of terrorist activity should never be tolerated wherever it takes place. The J&K government too should focus on the development of the region.

I am a Kashmiri too even if I'm not Muslim and I too have a say in this! I do not believe in any religion but humanity. Peace can resolve everything, if people give it a try. I can never sympathise with the militants if they continue their violent ways. Such people need to be put behind bars, no matter where they're from.

Good riddance with the terrorists.

Sad for civilians. Please do not interfere in army operations. Its not safe when trying to stop trained military people from doing their job.

Focus should be on education and jobs. Too many youth are joining the protests.

And Gandhi responded with peace. Which is quite unlike the youth in question here.

It surely wasn't Bhagat Singh was it?

Let us stick to mohandas, as you mentioned him as the good example. He was a broker for the british. Campaigned across india, asking indians to fight for the british in WW1 and WW2. So much for "non violence". Ever wondered why other freedom fighters were killed or sent to kaala pani, but mohandas got house arrest? Why was he awarded with kaisar-e-hind by the british and got the rank of sergeant? Better to be a traitor than follow the model of this person who was a hypocrite and chameleon.

Fine. Who is Kashmir's equivalent / opposite of him then?

How many freedom fighters retorted to non violence other than him?

Professor among 10 killed by Indian troops in held Kashmir

SRINAGAR: Ten Kashmiris, among them a professor, were shot dead by Indian forces during a clash and protests in one of the most violent days in India-held Kashmir on Sunday.

Thousands took to the streets in southern part of held Kashmir to show support for the five men killed during the gunfight.Government forces opened fire to break up the protests, director general of police Shesh Paul Vaid said.

Five of the protesters were killed and hundreds others injured. A police official said at least 10 of the protesters were hit by bullets and four were in a critical condition.

Government forces swooped on the village of Badigam, in Shopian district south of Srinagar, following a tip-off about armed men holed up in a house.

Mr Vaid claimed that armed separatists refused an offer to surrender, triggering the fierce gun battle.

A special appeal was made to Mohammad Rafi Bhat, a university sociology teacher who had gone underground with the armed men on Friday.

The Kashmir University, where he taught, was ordered closed for two days, according to a university statement.

“We brought his (Professor Bhat’s) father from his home to persuade him to surrender, but he, like all of them, refused,” Mr Vaid claimed, adding five armed men died in the firefight.

A top fighter of the Hizbul Mujahideen, a key separatist group, was also among the dead.

As news of the trapped men spread, residents took to the streets across southern Kashmir shouting slogans demanding an end to Indian rule, witnesses and an officer said.

A police official said at least 30 people were injured in clashes with government forces who fired live ammunition, pellet guns and tear gas.

A doctor at a hospital in Shopian said hundreds of injured needed treatment.

“We have reached our full capacity. We have run out of essential medicines, there are no more ambulances,” he said.

A curfew was ordered in Srinagar and mobile internet services were shut down in much of the disputed region.

The joint resistance leadership of separatists asked people to march to the chief minister’s office in Srinagar on Monday to protest against the bloodshed.

“Words fail to express the pain of the tragedy unfolding in Shopian as the count of the brutally killed by Indian forces keeps rising,” said All Parties Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq.

On Saturday, four Kashmiris had died during a firefight in Srinagar — the latest in a string of gun battles in recent weeks across the territory disputed by India and Pakistan since they split in 1947.

Fighting in held Kashmir this year has left 120 dead, according to officials.

India has deployed more than 500,000 soldiers in the restive region to tackle rising militancy as civilian support for the separatists grows.

I don't understand what these people even expect! No matter where you're from, where you are, if take up arms and try to take the law in your own hands, you will be shot by the police and the armed forces. Isn't that common sense? This is why I can never sympathise with these militants. Kashmiris need to act sensibly, get an education, get jobs, focus on development and lead their lives peacefully. Violence will never solve anything.
