In his preview of the 2-match Test series between the West Indies and Pakistan, Markhor writes about strengths and weaknesses of both sides and how the nature of pitches and vagaries of nature could well decide the fate of this contest.

Pakistan and West Indies do battle for the first time in Tests since the dramatic 2017 series where Shannon Gabriel’s brainfade handed Pakistan their first ever win in the Caribbean.

Incidentally that was Pakistan’s last overseas Test series win against a non-minnow. The winning captain Misbah-ul-Haq now returns as coach having failed to win a single Test away from home, except against a poor Zimbabwe team, with tours of Australia, England and New Zealand all ending in defeat in the previous World Test Championship cycle.

Pakistan

Pakistan’s opening pair of Abid Ali and Imran Butt will retain their places after performing against Zimbabwe. However, neither have convinced against quality pace bowling, especially Abid Ali who averages 23 away from home excluding the Zimbabwe tour.

Much is said about Babar Azam’s status as one of the world’s leading batsmen. Yet Babar’s Test numbers show he’s much to prove before being deemed worthy of standing alongside greats like Javed Miandad, Younis Khan and Inzamam-ul-Haq. Only one overseas Test hundred in 20 Tests is frankly not good enough, with Babar mustering only two runs from his last series in Zimbabwe. The aforementioned names thrived upon the added responsibility of captaincy – but Babar averages just 20 as skipper.

No such doubts are present for Mohammad Rizwan who’s become a pivotal player for Pakistan in all formats. Although, the ageing pair of Azhar Ali and Fawad Alam may find themselves targeted by the short ball which could turn out to be problematic for the visitors.

The bowling attack composition will depend on conditions. Slow, dry pitches will see a dual spin attack of Yasir Shah, player of the series in 2017 with 25 wickets, and Nauman Ali who’s made an impressive start to his Test career. Shaheen Shah and Hasan Ali will likely take the new ball, but the third seamer position is less certain although Mohammad Abbas’s experience of using the Dukes Ball for Hampshire in the County Championship will give him an edge.

West Indies

There was hope after a famous win in Bangladesh with a second string team and a gritty draw against Sri Lanka that West Indies had turned a corner. However, a dismal batting display on spicy pitches in St Lucia against South Africa where the hosts failed to reach 200 ended such talk.

Kraigg Brathwaite remains unable to nail down a permanent opening partner with Shai Hope unable to convert his white ball form into the Test arena against South Africa. Kyle Mayers and Nkrumah Bonner made sensational debuts in Bangladesh and their spin playing abilities will be crucial in combating the threat from Yasir and Nauman.

Their real strength lies in their pace attack. Kemar Roach has a superb record against left-handers, while Jason Holder’s nagging accuracy will test Pakistan’s patience. Highly rated Jayden Seales only played one domestic FC match before making his Test debut against South Africa where he impressed with Kagiso Rabada describing him as a great prospect.

Shannon Gabriel was a thorn in Pakistan’s side in 2017 with his 5-11 blowing the visitors away in Barbados. Gabriel’s fitness issues however have prevented him from realising his full potential.

Predictions

Much depends on the surfaces. Hard, bouncy pitches have so often been Pakistan’s undoing as seen at the 2019 World Cup where the Windies’ short ball tactics were lethal. However slow, turning pitches as seen in the T20s will play into Pakistan’s hands.

This series is scheduled during the wet season in the Caribbean, with miserable weather curtailing the T20 series, so a rain soaked draw would be unsurprising.

PK are too reliant on Babar and Riz and if the ball zips around they will lose. Pk batting outside them too is average to terrible.

I reckon our boys have the metal to take this at least 1-0 else could smell a draw with rain playing havoc.

Should a lot be made of the Dukes ball being played in these conditions?

Babar has looked average in his last few series to be honest and he's lucky he didn't play in NZ.

Pak have a reliant middle order in my view.

Insightful preview as always.

The pressure should mount on Cricket West Indies if they lose another series after appointing Brathwaite as captain. I personally thought it was the right decision at the time to remove Jason Holder, but performances against South Africa came as a shocking disappointment to many West Indian supporters.

I agree that the pitches in Kingston will play a big part in deciding if the West Indies are competitive.

With Abid Ali and Imran Butt as our openers we shouldn’t expect the team to do well.

Give Sharjeel Khan a chance in tests, his domestic performances warrant a selection into the longer format. People say he’s a hack, but this hack has played innings where he’s faced over 150 balls in FC cricket.

I would've liked Omair Bin Yousaf or the "boy wonder" Abdullah Shafique who's still not had a go.

We have a reliable middle order in my view.

InshAllah we win this, wanna see us excel in tests.

Not seen much of OBY so can’t really make a judgement on him but Abdullah Shafique should be eased into the team. I’d play him down the order for a year and once he’s settled into the team I’d push him up the order.

The WTC is Pakistan’s best chance of winning major trophy since 2017, with the fixtures we’ve got we have an opportunity of getting to the finals.

I'm backing our test team it's impressive in my view. NZ at home might give us a tough time cause they play spin quite well but honestly see our test team growing in stature.

I will keep my mouth shut and not make hairy fairy predictions on who will be highest run scorer and who will be the highest wicket taker blah blah blah. Just wanna comment after the series is over but inshAllah we are in for a good series and one i have been counting the days for.

Windies couldn't give a toss about test matches - they'll be a shadow of the team they are in t20's.

Omar needs atleast 1 season in domestic so does Abdullah.azhar should open

I expect a 0-2 win for Pakistan - they have the resources they need and a failure to win should spell end for careers for a few.

Feel sad for our Test players - just don't get enough chances to play.

Great review by Markhor.

Indeed, the frustrations with Pakistan will lie in our top order. I do not trust Abid Ali nor Imran Butt to survive the new ball against the likes of Jason Holder and Kemar Roach, who have great skills with the new ball.

Abid's technique is just poor against the moving ball, he relies more on luck than actually trying to bat. I could give a tail-ender the bat against the new ball, and he'd at least show some intent.

Imran Butt is another issue, because I think he will get trapped LBW throughout this series, because he will look to rectify the issue of edging the ball by either moving across or being more side-on, which will expose the chance of LBW.

Azhar Ali was doing fine given that he usually has to lay the foundation himself, though I'd worry about his footwork, especially against the likes of Cornwall who are decent spinners.

Babar Azam needs to score big runs in this series, at least a hundred and that too a big one.

I also have high hopes for Rizwan, I think with that hundred against South Africa, he should look to assert himself against this West Indies attack.

As for our bowling, Yasir Shah and Nauman Ali will have important roles, and Shaheen needs to be more convincing with the new ball, whereas Hasan Ali need to succeed with the old ball.

I'd drop Faheem Ashraf if we choose to play Mohammad Abbas, if not, then I'd play either Naseem Shah or Shahnawaz Dahani, both of whom have no FC experience so it should not make a difference.

We're you going to play him if azhar and Imran open

I'd have dropped Imran Butt seeing as his batting is poorer than Abid's, i mean at least Abid did something in the last series despite the opponent being poor.

Imran though i just like him for his catching.

True but then that's means 2 debutant in same game and we all know Pakistan doesn't do that lol

Good luck to both teams. But I am surprised with overconfidence in some posters supporting pakistan. This is still an away series in westindies and they are fiercely competitive at home. Pitches also can get a bit spicy.

So no Gabriel - So Pak batsmen can heave sigh of relief!

West Indies announce 17-member provisional squad for Betway Test Series

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Cricket West Indies (CWI) Selection Panel today announced the 17-member provisional squad for the Betway Test Series against Pakistan, starting on Thursday, August 12.

The panel have recalled fast bowler Chemar Holder and middle-order batsman Shamarh Brooks. Holder made his Test debut in New Zealand last year but has not featured since then. Brooks last played in New Zealand and has earned a recall following a polished century in the Best v Best four-day match last week. Additionally, two experienced players, left-hander Darren Bravo and fast bowler Shannon Gabriel will not feature in the upcoming two-match series.

Roger Harper, Lead Selector of the Senior Men’s Team said: “Chemar Holder returns, having recovered from his injury. He will bolster the fast bowling department. Shamarh Brooks batted his way into the provisional squad by scoring an accomplished century. He will certainly add some depth to the squad’s batting.

“Shannon Gabriel has been given time to rehab fully and build his conditioning, so he was not part of the preparations for the Test series against Pakistan, which included the Best v Best game. Darren Bravo has been part of the ‘bubble’ from the preparation camp leading into the Betway Test series against South Africa and has been given a break.”

Harper added: “I expect the team to be highly competitive in every department while playing with passion, purpose and determination. I look forward to the batsmen stepping up as they did in the series against Bangladesh and against Sri Lanka earlier this year in Antigua.”

The two-match Betway Test Series will be played at Sabina Park from August 12-16 and August 20-24. The Betway Test Series forms the first of six Series in the new cycle of the International Cricket Council World Test Championship to find the best Test match cricket team in the world.

Jayden Seales and Kemar Roach still scare me plus they still have Kyle Mayers who bowls well and Jason Holder.

Guess another chance for Fawad Alam to show what could have been had he been selected 10 years ago!

InshAllah, have a lot of high hopes for him and don't wanna jinx it.

Good luck Fawad and indeed all of the team.

So not the start we wanted!

But credit to the Windies for fighting it out.
