Canadian Senator Salma Attaullah Jan was robbed of cash, a black pearl necklace and her ID cards in Islamabad's F6 area on Tuesday night.

The senator was reportedly approached by two men on a motorcycle as she was getting into her car near F6 Markaz. The men grabbed her handbag and fled, prompting Jan to register a First Investigation Report (FIR).

Jan reported she was carrying $4,200, Rs62,000, a pearl necklace, a few credit cards and her Canadian Senate ID.

Appointed to the Canadian senate in 2010 during Stephen Harper's tenure, Jan, who hails from Mardan, describes herself as an "activist, artist and realtor".

not if you are travelling, plus sometimes folks stake out currency exchange locations and follow people once they leave. Don't know this happened hre

I agree, in a western, safe country people often carry a lot cash around.
But here we have a lady who is in a high profile job in a volatile country, with security issues carrying a bundle of dollars...

BUT like you, I don't really know what has happened here.

Nobody carries around cash anymore. Even in Pakistan most people use credit cards because almost all shops accept credit cards. Even petrol stations.

Anyway, no place in the world is it safe to carry around thousands of dollars at night. I've seen people getting robbed on the streets of London and New York with my very own eyes at night time. Only an insane person keeps that kind of cash with them.

what i mean to say, its normal for Pakistani diaspora who go back for a visit to carry lots of cash

Screw the money and the necklace, whats more to worry about is the ID card.

That ID card could be misused.

Anyways, Islamabad has spent so much money putting up those new cameras on roads, lets see if those cameras are of use or not now.
