Captain Safdar’s resolution passed to drop Dr. Abdus Salam’s name from QAU Physics department

ISLAMABAD: National Assembly (NA) on Thursday passed a resolution to rename the Physics department at the Quaid-i-Azam University in Islamabad.

In the resolution presented by MNA Captain (r) Safdar, it was argued that the dept should be named after Muslim scientist Abu al Fatah Abdul Rehman Al-Khazini.

I was referring to legislation implemented under General Zia (Ordinance XX). One of many gifts our Army has given to us.

Not skipping the context here - whilst Bhutto's move to declare Ahmadi's non Muslim was disgusting and a blot on our history, the legislation Zia enacted had far more serious consequences. It was one thing to declare Ahmadi's to be non Muslim (a decision which no state should be able to make), but to make it a punishable offence is so terrible that it is disturbing that we haven't even tried to amend this legislation.

On a side note, the fact that we are even discussing this paints a very sorry tale about our past.

This is tragic. Abdus Salam was a jewel of the entire subcontinent and also among the top 2-3 greatest Pakistanis of all time. Replacing his name with some 12th century Persian is a toxic combination of intolerance and servitude. Young Pakistani scholars will get more inspiration from the achievements of a fellow countryman who rose to the top of his field a few decades back than this Persian guy.

Good news!

The resolution was misreported and misrepresented by media houses.

The resolution had actually called for the physics department of QAU, instead of the National Center for Physics, as reported by various newspapers, to be renamed after a Muslim scientist.

The National Center for Physics,which is an independent entity inside QAU, and was renamed as Dr Abdus Salam Physics Center in 2016 will keep the the nobel laureate’s name.

Interesting how both Indian "conservatives" and "liberals" think like Pakistani "conservatives" and "liberals".

For example, Indian conservatives believe that the Indian Army is doing good in Kashmir and keeping the country safe, while the liberals are quite critical.

Funnily enough, Indian/Pakistani conservatives applaud Pakistani/Indian liberals as being champions of justice.

Bhai the big difference is that in India the army knows its role. It is subservient to the civilian government and does not interfere with administration of the country. It is not a major landowner nor is it involved in business. In Pakistan this is not the case and this is why it is an issue. The Army in Pakistan is out of control and has been for a very long time.

I promise you that if our civilian administration was strong and we had a better democracy (without the constant threat of coups, be they overt or covert), things in India, Afghanistan and most importantly, Pakistan would be very different.

I was trying to say that most people some blind spots, but I agree with all the points you make here.

I think the simple facts are:

1) The Pakistani Army dominates Pakistan economically with its senior officers acquiring great wealth. The reason the Pakistani Army involves itself in the economy is for the economic benefits the generals get.

2) The justification the Pakistani Army gives for its dominance is that it has to fight external enemies, notably India. So it needs to keep the "pot boiling" and it opposes any attempt at promoting peace with India by the politicians. There are many countries in the world which have territorial disputes (for example India and China), however they do not have the constant low level warfare that we witness between India and Pakistan. Only the gullible would believe that the Pakistani generals really care about the Kashmiris.

3) The economic domination of the economy by the Army keeps the country economically backward. There are no exceptions in history to the rule that an army dominated economy will be a backward economy. Army officers are "followers", they obey commands. For development you need "creative thinkers" who are rewarded for their economic success by the market, and only entrepreneurs from the private sector can be that.

4) Pakistanis really need to think about the issues and understand how Army domination is keeping them backward. Thinking that India is the reason for their lack of development is a dead end.
