MANCHESTER, England (AP) — An assailant drove a car into people outside a synagogue in northern England on Thursday and then began stabbing them, killing two and wounding three seriously in an attack on the holiest day of the Jewish year, police said.

Officers shot and killed the suspect, Greater Manchester Police said, though it took authorities some time to confirm he was dead because of concerns he had an explosive on him.

The attack took place as people gathered at an Orthodox synagogue in suburban neighborhood of Manchester on Yom Kippur, the day of atonement and most solemn day in the Jewish calendar.

Antisemitic incidents in the U.K. have soared following Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel and Israel’s ensuing military campaign in Gaza, according to Community Security Trust, an advocacy group for British Jews that works to eliminate antisemitism.

More than 1,500 incidents were reported in the first half of the year, the second-highest reported since the record set a year earlier.

“This is every rabbi’s or every Jewish person’s worst nightmare,” said Rabbi Jonathan Romain, of Maidenhead Synagogue and head of the Rabbinic Court of Great Britain. “Not only is this a sacred day, the most sacred in the Jewish calendar, but it’s also a time of mass gathering.”

Witnesses describe a car driving toward the synagogue and then a stabbing attack

In a series of posts on X, Greater Manchester Police said they were called to the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue shortly after 9:30 a.m. — shortly after services were set to begin. The caller said he saw a car being driven toward members of the public and that one man had been stabbed.

Chava Lewin, who lives next to the synagogue, said she heard a bang and thought it might be a firework until her husband ran inside their house and said there had been a “terrorist attack.”

A witness told her that she saw a car driving erratically crash into the gates of the house of worship.

“She thought maybe he had a heart attack,” Lewin said. “The second he got out of the car he started stabbing anyone near him. He went for the security guard and tried to break into the synagogue.”

Minutes later, police fired shots, saying they believed they had hit the assailant.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he was appalled by the attack and additional police officers would be deployed at synagogues across the U.K.

He flew home early from a summit of European leaders in Copenhagen, Denmark, to chair a meeting of the government’s emergency committee.

“The fact that this has taken place on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, makes it all the more horrific,” Starmer said on the X platform.

King Charles III said he and Queen Camilla were “deeply shocked and saddened″ to learn of the attack “on such a significant day for the Jewish community.″

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this appalling incident and we greatly appreciate the swift actions of the emergency services,’′ he said on his social media feed.

Pylas and Melley reported from London.

This is what you have to say about the attack on this issue? No condemnation of the terrorist attack?

Then again, it was expected and shameful.:mv

All innocent lives lost is always sad.

But the hypocrisy on your part is ridiculous. You do realise alot of the jews living in the UK refuse to acknowledge Palestinians and their right to a state. Let alone the 70 Thousand that have been massacred by the extremists IDF regime.

But then again. You've never denounced the actions of the IDF terrorists, or sympathised for the innocent massacred Palestinians. Your crocodile tears here are not misleading anyone

RIP to the ones who lost their lives!

It's funny the perpetrator and his likes believe they are actually helping the Palestinian cause with such acts.

A timely political shot in the arm for the Jewish cause, they have come in for some heavy criticism due to the genocide in Palestine. This murderous rampage should get public opinion back onside for the Zionist project.

It’s far too late to reshape any narrative, the entire world is fully aware of the facts.

That was a shameful post but then again do we expect anything different? They finds conspiracy theories in everything and will never blame their own ilk. Only 2 usual suspects defended so far. Just wait for sometime...a few more coming. UK is filled with them.
It is not a competition, and if you will make it one then you will always out compete anyone who is trying to defend the killing of innocent.

No one has defending the killing of innocent at his synagogue.

Police got there and took down the evil attacker in 6-7 mins.

Rapid response.

Credit to Manchester Police. They averted a major blood bath.
Great job by the Police. I think all places of worship and community centres need to be on high alert. I pray no more innocent people are murdered- too much blood lost in Gaza and other places

Ameen.

Yes. Particularly Jewish spaces for the moment. I fear some other radicals may feel inspired to do a copy cat.

Everytime our community makes progress in Europe on a matter it seems like some crazy Syrian comes and effs things up.

His name is Jihad Al-Shamie. It seems like such a weird name too.

How someone could attack worshippers is just beyond me.

Totally agree. As soon as the Israelis are desperate up pops these baastards to bail them out.

Sad to hear of this. I said it about Charlie Kirk and will say it again. There is no reason to kill people because you disagree with them and in this tragedy (for the victims and their families) and atrocity (of the murderer), we don’t even know what these people believed. They might even have been against what the Zionists are doing.

As Hitman has already said, it doesn’t help the situation. The people of Gaza do not need someone to go kill civilians thousands of miles away in a far away land. They need global action to stop the genocide and to led aid in.

Manchester synagogue attack: Suspect named as police make three arrests

The terrorist who killed two men outside a synagogue on the holiest day of the Jewish calendar is believed to be a British citizen of Syrian descent.

Greater Manchester Police have named the suspect as Jihad al Shamie, a 35-year-old who is understood to have entered the UK as a young child. He was granted British citizenship in 2006.

Three people - two men in their 30s and a woman in her 60s - have been arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism.

Al Shamie allegedly drove a car towards the gates of the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue and then began attacking people with a knife.

He was stopped from getting inside by security staff and members of the congregation. Police shot him dead minutes later, fearing that he was wearing a suicide device.

Three men remain in a serious condition in hospital. One suffered a stab wound, a second was hurt after being hit by the car, and the third has an injury possibly "sustained as officers stopped the attacker".

Detectives were still at two locations linked to the arrests on last night: White House Avenue in Crumpsall, and Langley Crescent in Prestwich.

Yes it's extremely weird although I would not describe it as funny. As I already said in my first post, this is actually a massive boost for israel and the Zionist cause as they were coming under huge international pressure across the world, and now world opinion will swing back behind them. These type of "Muslims" are the Zionists greatest allies and you have to wonder at their motives. Perhaps he was just a crazed loon.

Supposedly police accidentally killed on the victims as they were trying to take down the attacker.

"jihad" is a weird thing to name a kid. In it's current context anyway. Never met a desi with this name.

Anyone naming their kid jihad in this day and age needs to be on a watchlist.

What does 'Timely political shot' means? False flag na?

No, it just means it's given the zionist cause a very timely political shot. Which it has, and I gave the reasons why in the post you were referencing. If you want to argue that's not true then do so, but don't attribute false meanings to what I have said unless you can back it up.

So what do you think is the motive of the attacker?

I have no idea. There does appear to be a nihilistic mentality at loose these days where murder and carnage is seen as an end in itself. It came at an opportune time for the zionist cause though, they have taken a lot of damage over the last year or so.

Trigger happy GMP shot and killed two Jews.

The so called attacker wasn’t carrying any firearms. Round of applause for the police 👏

Who stands to gain the most from the aftermath of this attack?

We need to send our armed police on a shooting course!! They done almost same damage as the attacker!!

RIP to the victims.

Turns out genocide of an entire people isn’t very popular.

Israel can resolve anti-semitism by simply giving Palestinians rights.

This.

Even though any killing of innocent people is shocking and completely out of order.

However, majority of the Jewish community see Starmers recent announcement of recognition of a Palestinian state as a crime and supporting Extremism!

This itself is a major Problem.

I have met a Jordanian scientist in the past with the name Jihad in the UK.

But Alshamsie as a surname.....which means The Syrian, is a bit weird.

Who stands to gain the most from the aftermath of this attack?
No one really in my opinion. People are too entrenched in their side with not many undecided. Incidents like this are not going to change minds. Pro Palestinian supporters were still protesting even after this incident and the whole flotilla being boarded by the IDF overshadowed this despite the desperation from the U.K. media and the Zionist to promote this as headline news.
