What's new

Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis back in the West Indies ODI squad - Do they have a chance in the 2019 WC?

Good to see the big fella back playing international cricket. Windies this time around have a decent crop of LOI players. I can't see them winning but won't be easy beats that's fo sho.

Think they could make a push. They might try Chris Gayle to go t20 mode from ball one a la New Zealand in the 2015 world cup with Brendon McCollum

No as the ODI bowling is just not penetrative enough, and WI's block and bash method may work in T20s but their poor strike rotation is problematic in ODIs.

Everyone forgot they had to qualify for the world cup, suddenly West Indies will be in semi finals. They just got beaten home and away by BD

Don’t rule them out for the semis. Hope and Hetmyer are developing nicely. Lewis should get them off to good starts. I think they may surprise a few people.

Gayle is 10 years past his best as a batsman. This is a backward step. But in Lewis, hope and hetmyer they have a damn good chance of upsetting some unsuspecting teams. Bowling's good too. Oshane, bishoo etc. make a decent attack . Definitely better than Lanka and BD given the conditions in England.

They are better than BD, SL and very close to Pak. If everything clicks they are a dark horse for a SF spot

Nice to see Gayle back going out in the WC would be a nice end to his career. He’s deserved it.

They lost the series at HOME to BD in HOME conditions which suits them just few months back, they are ranked below BD for some years now. In what logic can they 'definitely' be better than BD?

No,they don't.

Their bowling attack is associate level in odis
Don't have one decent spinner who can win matches, death over bowling is poor
Only damage they can domis with the new ball

Batting is decent but still not world class

And they are not better than BD as some posters are claiming
BD beat them both home & away in this format

This format will help those teams who will be consistent throughout
Windies can at max win 2 matches out of 6 against top6 and even if they beat BD,SL & Afg ....they would still be having 5 wins with a poor NRR,as they will get thrashing in atleast 2-3 games they lose
so dont see any realistic chance of them playing the SF

WI were very lucky to even qualify for the WC
Afg beat them twice in the WCQ
They could beat Scotland by just 5 runs(D/L method)
Zim & Ireland also ran them close
They are actually at the same level as Afg,Zim,Sco

BD,SL,WI,Afg won't qualify for semis
Any of the top6 teams dropping points against any of these will regret later

West indies have given pak some trashing in recent icc events .We beat them in 2011 worldcup comfortably they trash us in icc champion trophy in 2013 than follow by another beating in 2015 worldcup where they demolish us.They are dangerous side and can beat any top team on flat wickets of england

Gayle will be a distraction. He is not needed. Remove Samuels too and the useless Darren Bravo. It could be the most exciting team in the world cup. They wont be consistent but can surprise many teams.

Gayle is finished.

They need Russel and Narine back and they are one of the best team going around in all departments.

1. Evin Lewis
2. Chris Gayle
3. Shai Hope
4. Darren bravo
5. Shimron Hetmyer
6. Nicholas Pooran (wk)
7. Andre Russel
8. Jason Holder (c)
9. Sunil Narine
10. Kemar Roach
11. Oshane Thomas

They have got so many options. Batting line up is very strong, bowling is also very good.

Powell and Hemraj have been given many chances and they have failed miserably. Gayle was part of team in the qualifying tournament so it makes sense to include him.

Some people here have no clue at all. 50% Gayle is better than these two combined.

gayle have played some amazing inning in england .i have seen him demolish county teams .he like eng grounds and back him score heavily if the wickets are flat.

I didn't knew, is that confirmed?

Russel didn't want to play against England because he can't bowl for long and Narine is fearing that his action might be called out. They might change the decision at the last moment

They are gun players and needed. I'll even go for Dre Russ only as a batsman also, he can make an impact with the bat.

Regarding Narine, how is he playing T20s across the globe if he thinks he has issues with his action ? Is it only the international cricket where action is strictly observed as ICC is involved ?

I can understand Lewis getting a recall, he is a decent player with time on his side but Gayle? That is absurd. He has not played since mid last year if I'm not wrong and I don't know how he has done in the various leagues since then, but I havent heard him setting the world on fire.

gayle needs to be away from the side, in all formats.

BD and Windies both have slow pitches and outfields where BD are comfortably a better team than Windies no doubt. However, on flat tracks , BD don't have the bowling or the batting firepower I think to match windies. Atleast I haven't seen anything to suggest otherwise.

Dont see a chance for them in the top 4, tbh. Gayle is mediocre.
