Could the current World XI beat the 2004 Aussie Test side?

Elgar
Warner
Smith
Kohli
Williamson
Stokes
De Kock
Philander
Steyn
Rabada
Yasir

I think this team would stand a good chance.

There haven't been any great openers since Cook regressed back to normalcy around 2013.
Warner is probably best in this decade and its doubtful how he'll return from sandpaper gate.

The likes of Elgar, Karunaratne, Vijay are just 38-42 avg players who enjoyed/are enjoying a brief 2-3 year run of late 40's average

Depends where the match or matches are played. If, in Australia then very unlikely, any where else test of the world stands a good chance but zero in Australia. Remember what happened when this was tried the last and only time around, the ROW was made to look like a bunch of rookies by the Aussies.

Venue will dictate the result here. Play in India on turning tracks with current Indian spinners, Aus won't win.

Play in Aus , World XI won't have any chance.

I remember the 2005 contest between Australia and ROTW. Aussies had been beaten in the Ashes and then convincingly crushed ROTW in both formats. Kallis and Dravid post series said that ROTW hardly felt like a team and they were much lesser than sum of the parts. So you can't just assemble 11 players from across the world and hope to translate it to on field success. There needs to be team work, synergy, mutual respect and a common aim. A Pakistani player playing for PCT or his franchise in PSL will have an attachment to his team, put him in a world XI squad with 3 each from Aus/Eng/Ind/NZ/SA.. etc under a Windies coach and Kiwi manager 2 weeks before the match and I doubt it will be the same for him. They need to develop the team, the players have to spend a lot of time together and form a bonding which may take at least a few months. And they need to find motivation, Aussies playing for their flag will be out for blood.

If that is accomplished I see the current world XI beating ATG Australia everywhere except Australia, SA and maybe NZ. On Indian pitches it will be a massacre while they will return favour with interest in Australia. Again can't name just one team, there needs to be 5-6 different combinations especially bowling wise.

In such a hypothetical contest ATG Australia would have nothing to lose and ROTW everything to lose. And when that ATG Australia played with a clear mind they were unstoppable, and their sledging/gamesmanship/ pressure tactics would crack quite a few of the modern era snowflakes.

Think Aus would. Even though the batting looks great in World XI, I think Mcgrath would trouble their bats.

are current indian spinners better than Harbhajan or Kumble?

There are a lot of "ifs" about the World XI. They would win IF you could select AB De Villiers (retired this year), Warner and Smith (banned), and IF Steyn were fit.

Warner
Pujara (opener)
Williamson (c)
Smith
Kohli
De Villers (wk)
Shakib
Philander
Rabada
Steyn
Lyon

I very much doubt that line up would beat that Aus side. I’ve watched them decimate attacks better than that above.

I do think current Indian attack can put 3 world class spinners at the same time and make it very hard for teams to play them well.

I don't think India was able to put 3 world class spinners 10-15 years back.

That’s australia side actually won in India and Indian spinners at the time were greater than it atleast equal to current Indian spinners

I believe the World XI will have a strong chance of beating them in the Asia, England and the Caribbean.

Australia though would win comprehensively in Australia, South Africa and New Zealand.
