Countries/cities that did not live up to your expectations?

recently a few relatives of mine visited the us from europe and they were quite disappointed with how dirty ny was and how the white house was not as grand as they thought it would be

what are some of the places/countries/cities you ppl have been to which did not live up to the hype and expectations and why?
 
UAE.

All hype. Zero substance.
 
Australia. The most openly racist and hostile country I've ever visited. Was in shock at just how blatant it is.
 
NY (Total dump)
Dubai
San Francisco (terrible city. Dirtiest in US from my experience)
Delhi (Thought the capital city of India would be a bit more clean)
Miami (All hype).
 
Taj Mahal in Agra
The leaning tower of Pisa
Venice
Lake bled- may be because i went there during winter and was walking over it....some people were playing ice hockey over it...
Rhine falls- Is that the largest waterfall europe could produce?
 
Been to London. Wish I hadn't wasted my money.
 
Dubai. Pathetic weather. Yeah there is a lot to do, but was a pain to travel across.

Geneva was also below expectations, but Interlaken more than made up for it.

Use the metro next time and go in the winter.
 
New Orleans. Smelled of **** and dirty as heck.
NYC wasn't too bad..

Winter was reserved for Pakistan but even if I went in winter wouldn't be much cooler... Because I was in Qatar then but it wasn't much better.

These days I'd take Doha over Dubai, it has developed quite a bit in the last few years.

It doesnt really go over 30C in the day and around 20C at night in the winter. Ive been to Doha too, it just doesn't have the amount of activities as Dubai but is nice. I suppose it depends on your experience as it often can put you off for next time.
 
Venice is a massive tourist trap.

NYC has it's positive points (diversity, culture) but is also a massive overpriced dump.
Los Angeles has it's nice areas but is mostly an expensive overpopulated dump. (Orange county is beautiful though but insanely expensive).

Dubai was bland.

All my opinion ofcourse.

I went to Miami and I loved it. Uncle has few properties there, he is a politician :srini. The girls are gorgeous, had them fall for my sexy accent.

Dubai is great for beaches, food and all the swish stuff, but it's totally fake. Also, too much of it resembles a construction site.

I can't imagine anyone who couldn't like London. I wouldn't want to live there, but for a place to visit there's so much to see. The weather is always going to be the problem in the UK, you have to hope it's not raining if you are planning on doing a lot of sight seeing.
 
Problem with a lot of tourists to NYC is that they dont even experience the city and just fall into overrated touristy traps

Nyc is a city which i wasnt a fan of but have grown to appreciate a lot in recent times.

There is SOO much to do

NY is awesome , infact one of the cities which I think deserves the hype .
 
People claiming NYC overrated? I don't agree at all. You gotta spend 5-6 days to appreciate it. Don't just spend 2-3 days and form your opinions. You may not like some popular attractions but there is something for everyone.

Same would be true for Paris/ London I suppose.

Problem is that people only visit Times Square and Central Park to form their opinions.

Rest of Manhattan is great itself, but also outside of that, Brooklyn and Queens are also awesome.

Dubai is a copycat place of other first world tourist destinations. Want beaches? You can go to California or Florida, even Turkish beaches are nice. There's an indoor snow place, which is kind of unique, but yeah everything is artificial there.

Only redeeming and unique thing i found was the Atlantis water park. Honestly think that's the 2nd best water park I've been to anywhere.
 
Qatar. It's not a city but it's small enough to be comparable to a medium sized Pakistani district which is basically a city and it's suburbs. Doha is flashy enough but the rest is pretty dumpy for what is by far the richest country on RNGesus' green earth with certain parts resembling the streets of Peshawar, no exaggeration. One interesting thing is that you can tell which part of the world a neighborhood's inhabitants are from just by the quality of infrastructure and businesses there. South Asians mostly live in the crappiest neighborhoods, followed by Southeast Asians, East Asians, non-GCC Arabs, North Americans and Europeans, GCC Arabs, and Qataris, in that order.

That was my impression as well. You can stay in some fantastic hotels which are attached to water parks or beaches which is fine in itself, but the city itself doesn't seem to have any soul or character. Not bad if you want a holiday resort experience I suppose.

Very artificial and fake The lack of culture makes it one of the most disapointing places ive visited Never again
